Heating water efficiently is critical because heating uses up more energy than space in multifamily buildings with five or more units. The new analysis shows that converting gas-fired heaters to advanced technology—electric HPWHs—would cut the greenhouse gases these systems are responsible for by an average of 58%. If powered entirely from clean sources, this means zero emissions, making them a key tool when it comes down to Decarbonizing our economy!

The high cost and availability of these new technologies mean that building owners will likely remain hesitant to invest in them. Still, there's been little incentive from policymakers or anyone else who has authority over the issue at hand - until now! Tenants can't afford their energy bills without a solution for this problem.
Heat pumps are the best way to cut your electricity bill by shifting when you use them! For example, if solar production increases during morning hours, heat pump filters can be used at noon so that less energy is needed for cooling. HPWH can store solar energy for days or even months with the right materials and installation. This new research shows that these systems could potentially be capable of holding 3.5 terawatt-hours—the amount used by 325 thousand homes in one year!
The report finds many challenges when replacing gas products with HPWHs in multifamily buildings. They can be most cost-effective where electricity prices or natural gas rates remain high at large temperature ranges below freezing point (-40 degrees Fahrenheit). Federal incentives like tax credits for purchasing clean energy systems will help adoption happen faster across all industries, while regional utility policies may become more incentive-driven over time too!
This new version of this important legislation will provide rebates and larger tax credits for installing high-performance water heaters (HPWHs) or other efficient equipment at home; it's only fitting then that we take advantage while these incentives last!
Installing in-home Hot Water Heat Pumps is a smart choice for multifamily homeowners, but only if offered the right incentives. Many utilities provide gifts and grants to entice residents to build with these systems; however, there's little support available when it comes time to transition from fossil fuels - which many states restrict or ban outright!

Qld’s full-size electric bus powered by 100% solar
The transport sector accounts for 18.9% of Australia’s carbon emissions, so expanding the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is one of the most effective ways to lower these emissions. Global e-mobility leader and bus operator Transdev has now risen to the task, placing what is claimed to be Australia’s first 100% sustainably powered full-size electric bus on the roads in South East Queensland.
Transdev has been operating the 39-seat e-bus, carrying 61 passengers on TransLink routes throughout Brisbane and the Redlands, since early 2021, under a two-year partnership with the Queensland Government. The bus is 100% powered by ‘harvested’ solar energy from 250 solar panels, designed to capture more than 159,000 kWh of local sunshine onsite at Transdev’s Capalaba depot each year.
ABB Electrification and its installation partners worked with Transdev Australasia to provide an integrated grid-to-plug solution to support their bid to transfer their fleet to electric. All aspects of Transdev’s Queensland depot were evaluated prior to submitting a charging proposal, including analysis of proposed vehicle specification and the number of vehicles being considered, while also accommodating proposed future expansion of the e-bus fleet.
“Given that nothing of this scale had been done before in Australia or New Zealand, having a supplier like ABB that had local know-how backed with international experience was essential,” Transdev Australasia Chief Engineer Marc Cleave said.
“ABB is proud to be playing its part in powering the future of public transport in Australia,” added Steven Amor, ABB Australia’s E-Mobility Segment Lead. “We worked with both Transdev and Australian bus body manufacturer Volgren to develop a charging solution that would enable zero-emission transportation along the bus routes.
“Because buses follow fixed schedules and routes, there is no unpredictability around the range. The anchor decision is the bus charging strategy — because efficient recharging reduces electric bus operating costs. For Transdev, ABB deployed its e-bus ready Terra 124 dual-outlet fast-charging stations that can provide a single 120 kW charge or simultaneously charge two buses at 60 kW [in] under five hours and up to a 300-km range per charge. This solution minimises downtime and improves utilisation of the buses across the planned route.”

The new electric buses were built at Volgren’s factory in Dandenong, Melbourne, using close to 100 Australian suppliers and almost 90% proportion of local production. The chassis and the 348 kW lithium phosphate battery were manufactured by Chinese company BYD.
Volgren CEO Thiago Deiro said the introduction of zero-emission buses in Australia would have significant benefits for commuters, fleet operators, the health sector and, most importantly, the environment. “The fleet transition to electric buses that we’re now seeing will play an important part in reducing transport emissions in Australia and globally, which is essential for the community in so many ways,” he said.
“Our goal is to not only make the very best electric bus bodies, but to share knowledge and be part of the solution with international partners like ABB and Transdev.”
Transdev was also looking for a digital solution that would integrate with solar-powered panels. ABB’s high-power chargers form part of the ABB Ability portfolio of digital solutions. They benefit from cloud connectivity, which allows network operators 24-hour availability of the charging infrastructure to perform tasks remotely, such as monitoring diagnosis and upgrades to maximise charger availability and ensure reliable and efficient infrastructure.
“Our DC fast chargers run on the ABB Ability Connected Services Platform, which employs Microsoft’s Azure cloud services to enhance uptime, scalability and operational efficiencies, as well as to provide real-time remote support services,” Amor said. “ABB provides EV charging stations and critical EV charging infrastructure components, such as substations, energy storage systems and eco-friendly switchgear. These technologies are designed so that EV charging stations, once installed, will be both futureproof and scalable.
“ABB and Transdev share a similar vision around the potential of e-mobility and transportation to transform society. Our common goal is to accelerate the introduction of emission-free transportation by creating an environmentally friendly bus fleet supported by a standardised, fast, efficient and reliable charging system that will serve Transdev’s expanding electric bus fleet both today and into the future.”

We’re consistently reminded that we’re facing a future in modern cities that looks very different from the one we’re in now – perhaps not exactly hover-cars ala The Jetsons, but we can expect buildings that generate power for both their site and the grid, automated vehicles transporting heavy goods, and automated aerial taxis planned for the Paris Olympics.
Streetlights themselves are smarter than the ones we grew up with. The modern smart streetlight uses less power, generates its own power via solar and wind energy and even supplies the grid with excess, but there’s one more capacity that city lighting infrastructure offers that’s stirring up excitement for electric vehicle drivers around the globe – easy access to charging infrastructure.

At present, EV charging infrastructure is growing at a rapid pace. In the US, Electrify America is installing an EV charging station at a Walmart store once every three days, which are capable of charging multiple vehicles simultaneously, and the UK now boasts more charging points than fuel stations. Enel has mapped charging stations across most of Europe, but that has still not been enough to beat the number one concern for those contemplating crossing the divide and buying their first EV – range anxiety. Then, there are concerns around charging costs themselves, with few countries offering subsidised – let alone specific – EV charging costs.
The answer it appears has been on the street the whole time.
To London, where the streets are paved with EV-charging gold.
In 2016, Transport for London (Tfl), the Greater London Authority, and London Councils announced a partnership with EV charging solutions provider ubitricity, and Siemens, to convert hundreds of the city’s streetlights into on-street charging.
Ubitricity retrofitted the first London lamppost with charge points in 2016, and by 2018 had approximately 300 charging points across the city and around 13,000 electric vehicles.
Two-thirds of Londoners park on-street and parking in the UK capital is infamously difficult to find at best. Imagine then, inner-city traffic intended to consist of low emission cars, scooters, and other public traffic and the fact that at best, one-third of it is capable of being charged at home.
On-street charging, it appears, would be the most logical solution.
Siemens would provide the streetlight technology to enable the solution – a smart charging cable that reads which street-pole is used, and mobile metering technology to track the power consumed. The data is then sent to a mobile power provider for billing.
A solution perhaps, that’s simpler than many would imagine.
These “Smart City” EV charging points deployed in the boroughs of Wandsworth and Kensington and Chelsea come in the face of pressure on local councils, particularly after government ministers called on councils to “ensure that all their residents can take advantage of this [electric] revolution” in transport. The scheme was funded with £3.7 million of London’s £13 million Go Ultra Low funding and aims to deliver 1,150 charging points by the end of 2020.
Cllr Julian Bell, London Councils’ chair of the transport and environment committee, said: “We each recognise the importance of improving air quality for Londoners and London Councils are leading the way in rolling out electric vehicle infrastructure across London by taking innovative new technology, such as using the power from lighting columns to charge vehicles and scaling it up to provide safe charging solutions more accessible for Londoners.
“This is an exciting step in providing London boroughs the means to purchase and install electric vehicle charge points. Together, London Councils will continue to work with partners to improve our air quality and help clean up London’s air.”
A more recent example has started on the other side of the globe in Sydney, Australia, and differs in that instead of a cable, the entire streetlight pole is replaced.
The technology provides a more comprehensive solution, more closely resembling future infrastructure, featuring Wi-Fi connections, security cameras, and smart lighting that can be controlled remotely.
The Wi-Fi connection, when offered over a city-wide network, effectively creates a free public network, capable of gathering and transmitting traffic information, electricity consumption, In March 2019, Melbourne-based EV charging solutions provider Jet Charge announced the installation of the first light-pole as part of a two-suburb trial in the west-Sydney suburbs of Blacktown and Canada Bay.
The rollout is small, at just twenty streetlight poles, but includes Wi-Fi, providing connectivity for both utility and convenience’s sake.
Perhaps best of all, the infrastructure is free to use for now. Future rollouts may make charging free, or near-free, with smart streetlights generating and storing power, to be used for either grid balancing and demand management, long-term storage, or free EV charging services.
The poles are designed by ENE-HUB, and are estimated to cost in the region of AU$30,000 each, but produce the same amount of energy as a typical Australian home connection. This means that charging will take hours instead of minutes, with the idea being that vehicle owners would use the facilities to charge vehicles overnight.
“We’ve been working with a smart light pole company to deploy the first light-pole chargers in Australia, and the first one is being turned on right now,” said Jet Charge boss Tim Washington, in an interview with CarsGuide at the Nissan Future summit.
“They’re security cameras, they have LED lighting, and they have Wi-Fi hotspots and EV charging. And we helped them to design and build them.
“It’s really to demonstrate what street-side charging might look like. It’s a demonstration of what’s possible.” SEI

But the AEMC chairwoman concedes regulators needed to do a better job selling the merits of using smart meters, with recent research showing 30 per cent of people with smart meters didn’t even know they had them. Ms Collyer, who is also chairwoman of the Energy Security Board which is helping with the post-2025 design of the National Electricity Market – will say equity remains a major concern for energy regulators. Earlier this month the Australian Energy Regulator released a report warning that lower socio-economic groups could bear the brunt of the costs of the energy transition. “The cost of solar panels, let alone household batteries and EVs, is out of the question for many people,” Ms Collyer will say. “As a renter, your access to solar power is dictated by the will of your landlord. There can be technical or legal difficulties installing EV chargers in apartment buildings that don’t affect freestanding homes. “And it can still be a barrier to getting solar panels if you live somewhere with a lot of big trees. Three million rooftop generators is a lot – but it’s not everyone. We must build grid scale wind and solar renewables from 16 gigawatts now to 44 gigawatts in 2030. Storage capacity in the form of batteries pumped hydro and virtual power plants need to increase from two gigawatts now to 15 gigawatts by 2030.” Mr Redman, the former chief executive of AGL Energy, said future transmission assets may need to be integrated to deliver efficiencies and save money in the roll-out. “We are at the point now where we must accelerate because two years too early is better than two years too late,” he said. “Current global supply chain pressures are not forecast to ease any time soon. Economies of scale at this scale are rarely afforded an infrastructure delivery of this critical and cannot and must not be delayed.” Mr Redman said he was encouraged by some state energy ministers, such as Victoria’s Lily D’Ambrosio, taking some ownership of social licence for new transmission projects, saying it can’t all be on the company. Compensation also helps win over landowners. “These big transmission projects benefit the many, but they really do impact the few so whatever we can do, to ease the way for the few. EV charger with integrated solar works 4x faster
Australian motorists will soon be able to charge their electric vehicles (EVs) up to four times faster with the release of what is claimed to be the world’s first two-in-one solar inverter and EV charger. The innovative design of the EV charging solar inverter enables faster charging through its solar boost mode, which allows simultaneous charging from grid and solar power.
SolarEdge Technologies Australia General Manager Gavin Merchant said the two-in-one EV charger and solar inverter had the potential to advance the growing EV market, offering superior convenience, grid independence and cost benefits.
“Embedding an EV charger in our solar inverter gives owners flexibility in how they charge their EVs and how fast they do it. Having the solar boost mode option offers huge peace of mind and convenience because you can effectively quarter typical charging times.”
Merchant said that charging using the solar-only option also has the added benefit of giving users more energy independence, enabling them to reduce power bills and carbon footprints. The two-in-one charger and inverter is compatible with multiple EVs and integrates with the SolarEdge monitoring platform, allowing users to control and track charging status and set charging schedules to take advantage of off-peak rates.
Merchant said SolarEdge’s market-leading technology could help to accelerate EV ownership in Australia.
“With industry analysts expecting more new EVs to be sold globally than petrol and diesel cars in the next five to 10 years, we are heading towards a tipping point. As a result, our largest energy use in the home is going to be for EV charging,” he said.
“Being able to use our EV charging solar inverter to power your car from solar gives consumers a more economic and greener option.”

The EV charging solar inverter is expected to be available in Australia by the end of 2019. The solution is also available as an EV-ready option for future EV purchases for PV system owners.
