don't imagine him play-fighting with his boy. Aegon and his training sword fighting against the merciless beast that is his little golden fledgling, gently attacking playful claws and flapping wings and nipping beak, parrying when the dragon gets too close. or Sunfyre finally tackling his boy, mocking dragonfire when he screeches in his face, before nuzzling his boys cheek.

don't imagine them curling up in the sun, out in the grass or in a windowsill. Sunfyre spreading his wings over his boy to bask in the light, burying his face in the warmth of the crook of Aegon's neck.

don't imagine the hatchling perching on his bonded's shoulder. don't imagine Aegon sneaking to see him when he was sad or angry. don't imagine Sunfyre crying out in distress, restless in his den when he could feel Aegon's distress but could not get to him

don't imagine the fledgling finding his way to Aegon's window, sneaking in and curling up next to the boy as he laid drunk and miserable, coping as he wrapped around him. don't imagine him perching on the roof of Aegon's chambers, crying to him when he got too big to enter.

don't imagine his sweet little chirps and songs. don't imagine Aegon's little giggles and chuckles. don't imagine the nuzzling of white hair or the scratching. don't imagine them being happy

   Born on Dragonmount, he was bonded to Aegon II, the son of Queen Alicent and King Viserys. Aegon, who was the mount’s only rider, based his sigil on Sunfyre; the glistening golden three-headed dragon. He was crowned King when his father died, although his father had not named Aegon heir. 

   Known as the most brilliant-looking dragon in all of Westeros, Sunfyre had scales that glinted in the sunlight. He had pink detailing, as well as pink wings. In size, he was bigger than Tessarion but smaller than Syrax. Even though he was young, he still proved to be a formidable foe. According to Archmaester Gyldayn, Sunfyre was the most beautiful dragon ever seen in the known world.

   Sunfyre was a fourth-generation dragon, along with Arrax, Moondancer, Seasmoke, Tessarion, Tyraxes and Vermax. 

   Similar to his rider in many ways, Sunfyre loved being paraded around, receiving awes from those below. The golden mount loved being doted upon and complemented.

What new dragons are you most excited to see in both House of the Dragon and Rise of the Dragon?

I'm can't say I'm particularly eager for any one dragon, although I do describe Sunfyre as the most beautiful dragon that anyone has ever seen. He looks like he's not a real dragon, but a dragon made of gold. His scales and armor are bright gold, like a flash in the sun. So let's try to capture that when we see him on-screen.

the real joy of s2 ep4 of hotd is the personalities imbued in all the dragons. The look Meleys gives Rhaenys just before they die, the feeling that both of them are seasoned warriors like brothers in arms. The way Sunfyre appears to play push Aegon (as if they are friends more than anything) and wraps himself around Aegon’s mangled body as if to protect him while Sunfyre himself lays dying. The way Aemond tells Vhagar to chill the fuck out and she just flops back onto the floor like she couldn’t give a shit what they do! All the dragons had personality. It was both lovely and heartbreaking all at once. it makes the downfall of the Targaryen house all the more devastating and bittersweet to know these relationships between ride and dragon are being lost to history and time.

Sunfyre moved his wing to shield Aegon from Vhagar's fire.

He landed on his wounded belly, which means even though he fell out of the sky backwards, he angled his body to avoid crushing Aegon and take the full brunt of the fall.

Eventually, when Aemond found him, he curled up around his rider.
