What’s a ‘Granfluencer’? Older Social-Media Stars Are Thriving (PC Magazine) The term “influencer” conjures images of young people, replete with ring lights and smartphone cameras, spending hours at home or out on the nearest sidewalk or boardwalk, attempting to capture a viral dance move or lip-sync the latest sampled catchphrase. Emphasis on “young”—but that isn’t always the case. The site MedicareHealthPlans.com set out to feature “granfluencers” by creating a grid of 50 people—each over the age of 65, and each with a social-media-follower count of at least 5 million. The youngest granfluencer is 65-year-old Venezuelan singer-songwriter Ricardo Montaner, who just edged out Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra. Both are also probably the only non-household names on the list, at least for US audiences.
No Moore Power (CNN) Several communities across Moore County, North Carolina began experiencing power outages just after 7 p.m. Saturday, with over 40,000 people affected. The power outage is now being investigated as a “criminal occurrence” after crews found signs of potential vandalism at several locations. A state of emergency was declared at 4 p.m. Sunday, as well as a mandatory curfew. Mike Cameron of the Southern Pines Fire and Rescue Department said on Sunday that a gate at one of the locations appears to have been taken off its hinges, and two power substations were damaged by gunfire. Auto accidents have increased with traffic lights being out, and those who rely on oxygen are having to call emergency services. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI are getting involved, but the motive for the vandalism remains unknown.
The War on Hogs (AP) It’s been eight years since the U.S. government launched a federal program to combat the feral pigs that have taken over large swathes of the country and destroyed billions of dollars in farm production, and the data is clear: Listen, the hogs aren’t losing, we can say that. Sure, in light of $100 million of spending toward their destruction, the pigs have been wiped out from 11 of 41 states where they were reported in 2014 and 2015. But they persist, causing an estimated minimum of $2.5 billion a year in damages, and some 6 million to 9 million feral swine still roam the country. Four states—California, Oklahoma, Texas and Florida—all count over 750,000 hogs, with Texas’ population at a stable 3 million since 2011.
UK economy to shrink in 2023, risks ‘lost decade’: CBI (Reuters) Britain’s economy is on course to shrink 0.4% next year as inflation remains high and companies put investment on hold, with gloomy implications for longer-term growth, the Confederation of Business Industry forecast on Monday. “Britain is in stagflation—with rocketing inflation, negative growth, falling productivity and business investment. Firms see potential growth opportunities but ... headwinds are causing them to pause investing in 2023,” CBI Director-General Tony Danker said. Britain has been hit hard by a surge in natural gas prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as an incomplete labour market recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic and persistently weak investment and productivity. British inflation hit a 41-year high of 11.1% in October, sharply squeezing consumer demand, and the CBI predicts it will be slow to fall, averaging 6.7% next year and 2.9% in 2024.
War and Sanctions Threaten to Thrust Russia’s Economy Back in Time (NYT) Valery Volodin, a welder at a sprawling Volkswagen plant in western Russia, relaxed for most of the summer at his dacha, or weekend house, planting his garden and looking after his children. Mr. Volodin, 41, had little choice: The car factory closed down in March, joining more than 1,000 multinational companies that had curtailed operations in Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine. Since then, he has been sitting at home while Volkswagen looks for a buyer. He goes into the plant once a month to collect 50,000 rubles, about $800, a payment required by Russian labor law that is the equivalent of two-thirds of his previous salary. “We go into work, but the plant stands empty,” Mr. Volodin said in an interview. He does not mind a temporary break from the physically demanding work, but he is not sure how to plan for the future. “We live day to day, for now,” he said. His experience is playing out across Russia for hundreds of thousands of workers after the West imposed sweeping economic sanctions that were intended to hobble Moscow’s ability to wage war and to undercut public support for President Vladimir V. Putin. More than nine months after the invasion, neither the war effort nor the economy has collapsed, and the economic pain is still limited for many Russians. But the impact of what some have described as the most coordinated and deepest economic sanctions in modern history is evident in communities across Russia—and the worst may be yet to come.
Ukraine strikes deep within Russia (NYT) Ukraine executed its most brazen attack into Russian territory in the nine-month-old war, targeting two military bases hundreds of miles inside the country with unmanned drones, according to the Russian defense ministry and a senior Ukrainian official. The senior official said that the drones were launched from Ukrainian territory and that at least one of the strikes was made with the help of Ukrainian special forces operating close to the base, who helped guide the drone to the target. One explosion hit the Engels-2 air base, which is near the southwestern city of Saratov, hundreds of miles from the Ukrainian border, and hosts Russian strategic bombers. The base has been used as a staging location for attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid, according to Ukrainian officials. A separate explosion at a military base in the city of Ryazan killed three people and wounded six others, the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported. It said that a fuel truck had exploded, citing a statement from the local emergency services, but did not name a cause. The Engels air base and the Ryazan military installation are each 300 to 450 miles from the Ukrainian border, which is beyond the range of any known missile in Ukraine’s arsenal. The city of Ryazan is only about 150 miles from Moscow.
Advice for Europeans: Bundle Up and Get Ready for Outages (NYT) Life in some European cities may soon look like this: Staggered electricity outages to save energy. Temporary cuts in mobile phone and internet service. Schools closed for a lack of lighting and heat. Even traffic lights could briefly be powered down. Europe has spent months preparing for a winter without Russian gas, stockpiling fuel and pushing conservation measures in hopes of maintaining enough energy to keep power grids running. But as an unseasonable streak of mild weather gives way to freezing temperatures, governments are starting to brace people for the possibility of controlled power cuts in the event that energy supplies are stretched—with a wide-ranging impact on daily life. The French government last week started instructing officials around the country to plan for potential rolling electricity outages as soon as next month. Britain’s National Grid operator has warned households of possible blackouts from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. if gas used to produce electricity runs short. Electric car owners in Finland are being advised not to heat their plugged-in vehicles on freezing mornings to avoid straining the grid. And in Germany, the country that has been most dependent on Russian gas, people are taking no chances: Sales of candles have soared.
Indonesia’s Mt. Semeru eruption buries homes, damages bridge (AP) Improved weather conditions Monday allowed rescuers to resume evacuation efforts and a search for possible victims after the highest volcano on Indonesia’s most densely populated island erupted, triggered by monsoon rains. Mount Semeru in Lumajang district in East Java province spewed thick columns of ash more than 1,500 meters (nearly 5,000 feet) into the sky Sunday. Villages and nearby towns were blanketed with falling ash, blocking out the sun, but no casualties have been reported. Hundreds of rescuers were deployed Monday in the worst-hit villages of Sumberwuluh and Supiturang, where houses and mosques were buried to their rooftops by tons of volcanic debris. Heavy rains had eroded and finally collapsed the lava dome atop the 3,676-meter (12,060-foot) volcano, causing an avalanche of blistering gas and lava down its slopes toward a nearby river. Searing gas raced down the sides of the mountain, smothering entire villages and destroying a bridge that had just been rebuilt after a powerful eruption last year.
Iran morality police status unclear after ‘closure’ comment (1440) Iranian officials signaled over the weekend it had shut down the country's guidance patrol, informally known as the morality police, amid ongoing protests sparked by the September death of a young woman while in custody. It marks the most significant concession by the government, which also said hijab laws would be reevaluated, since demonstrations began. Led primarily by women and younger Iranians, the protests began after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died under mysterious circumstances after reportedly being stopped in Tehran for not wearing a hijab. In the following weeks, the demonstration's spread from Amini's Kurdish home city of Saqqez to dozens of cities across Iran, with almost 450 people killed and 18,000 arrested by security forces. Observers have called the demonstrations the biggest challenge to the country's theocratic regime since the 1979 revolution, with protests largely spanning geography, social class, and age.

Why are these happening in Sri Lanka?
*takes a deep breath*
We are currently facing a severe economic crisis. Sri Lanka has survived 30 years of civil war, Easter Sunday bomb attacks in 2019 and of course the covid pandemic.
But nothing has ever gotten this bad. Of course, all of the above (and many others) have had a negative impact on our economy. This is not something that happened suddenly. Our economy has been in decline for a long time now.
But the primary cause is our corrupt leadership (As you can see from the arbitrary arrests and curfews being imposed currently).
70% of Sri Lanka's budget is controlled by the Rajapaksa family. By a single family who runs the government.
Our president is Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Our prime minister is Mahinda Rajapaksa (former president). Our finance minister is Basil rajapaksa. Chamal Rajapaksa is the minister of irrigation. They are brothers!
They are more rajapaksas in our parliaments - handling different ministries - including the youth ministry and one of them is a cabinet minister.
Basically, they have been running our country and controlling our budget and basically exploiting the fuck out of us. While many of us knew it was bad, there is nothing we could because they are political majority in the country.
But now they've run us to the fucking ground. We have power cuts lasting up to 13 hours a day. The dollar rate has sky rocketed (from 170 rupees to 330). We have no fuel (hence no electricity). Public transport is basically nonexistent. Schools have closed down. Hospitals are operating at capacity - and without power. There are people - I shit you not - who only eat one meal a day because our cost of living is through the roof. Because we have no foreign currency in the country, we can't import anything because we can't pay for anything. This means we don't have medications, basic food staples and many other things because we important all of this.
In essence, it is a clusterfuck. Biggest in our history.
So, people are really fucking frustrated - and rightly so. There are riots and protests in the streets every day. Journalists and activists are being arbitrarily arrested (and assaulted) under the PTA (prevention of terrorism act) because anyone who speaks against the government is now being labelled as "extremists".
I don't know how or when things are going to get better. It doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon because things are really, really bad right now. I only hope the damage will be minimal as we find our way out of this possibly in the next few months (or years).
