See that sexy man picking food out of his teeth? Tonight at the Rev Room he unleashes his latest album upon the world with his band Sumokem. I guess the rest of them are sexy too. Fayetteville buds Auric and Little Rock’s own headcold return tonight to raise a little hell. If you need the thunder in your life, come on down. There will be plenty to go around. #sumokem #revroomlr (at Revolution Music Room (The Rev Room))

Album Covers That Blew Our Ever-Lovin’ Minds in ‘17
~By Billy Goate~
For The Love of Fantasy
The doom-stoner scene has long had a love affair with album art, much of which could be traced back to the thematic link between song lyrics and the fantasy and science fiction literature (indeed, Book of Wyrms directly alluded to these roots in January with the title of their debut, simply titled ‘Sci-Fi/Fantasy’). The animated features like Ralph Bakshi's Wizards (1977) and the Rankin/Bass television production The Hobbit from the same year, proved extraordinarily influential to artists of all stripes, whether their instrument of expression was the brush or guitar. And, of course, there was Heavy Metal (1981). Iron Maiden both fascinated and repulsed with their recurring figure of Eddie and Megadeth captivated imaginations with apocalyptic landscapes strewn with the horrific wreckage of what was once mankind.
Tumblr media
I think we can agree that a milestone was reached for the doom-stoner genre, however, with the release of Sleep’s Dopesmoker in 1999. Arik Roper depicted neither gore nor violence, yet the landscape felt decidedly post-apocalyptic. More than that, it told a story -- one that was certainly complimented by the lyrics of the San Jose band’s seminal work (even inspiring fan fiction in the form of the short-lived Creedsmen Arise, half of would later form Vokonis). Dopesmoker was a turning point for album art, indeed, after which point commissions for album covers and even concert posters multiplied exponentially. We’re talking some high quality strokes to match the intensity of the riffs we were hearing and the quality bud that was perhaps being smoked to max out the experience. This was art you could really get lost in, hearkening back to the dime store novels and Golden Age comic books that have been a part of Western reading for over a century.
In the decade of the 2010′s, one David Paul Seymour would dominate as the most recognized and celebrated artists for bands and fans alike. He was certainly not alone. We must also give props to the art of Skinner (a Mastodon go-to), Rob Leecock (Monster Magnet), John Dyer Baizley (Baroness), David D'Andrea from Samaritan Press (Sleep), Kiryk Drewinski (Liquid Visions), Paolo Girardi (Lycus) Nick Keller (Beastwars), John Santos (Torche), Adrian Baxter (Alunah), Mark McCormick (Witch Mountain), Zé Burnay (Space God Ritual), Pig Hands (Dopelord), Dominic Sohor (High Fighter), Colin Bolger of Dabulga Design, Antoine Defarges of Headbang Design, Goatess Doomwych, and many more. Of special note is Adrien Dexter (featured in the spread above), who has been the Elder album cover artist of choice record after record. Adrien went for a particularly striking color this year that was quite effective in breaking out of the drab palette we’ve become accustomed to (and complemented the music surprisingly well).
Doomed & Stoned
Artist of the Year
Most recently, another artist has taken the art of the album cover to another level altogether -- the Portland-based artist Adam Burke of Nightjar Illustration. Using oils to pain vast canvases of fantasy, Adam made a huge impression on bands last couple year with his album covers for Ancient Warlocks, Bright Curse, Great Electric Question, Pastor, and R.I.P. His powers of light and dark landscapes hold true to the fantasy genre that precedes him and takes the medium to bold new places. Not surprisingly, his project plate was full in 2017. Adam Burke gets our most approving nod for Artist of the Year! Here are some of his album covers -- all of these in 2017, mind you:

Tumblr media
WAR CLOUD
'War Cloud' (September 2017)
Tumblr media
Adam Burke will be involved in the upcoming animated epic, ‘The Planet of Doom.’ The film is presently in the works, a production of Riff Lodge Animation. It's plot? "Halvar the Brave seeks vengeance aboard a witch-born chopper, journeying across a psychedelic landscape on a quest to defeat the deadly beast Mördvél for the slaying of his bride." The saga will play out in 14 chapters, with doom metal bands providing the soundtrack and today's finest album artists bringing the vision to life. Screenplay by David Paul Seymour and animated directed by Tim Granda.
Tumblr media
Here’s one of the many landscapes from the forthcoming animated feature 'Planet of Doom' that he’ll be involved in, with a number of others.
Tumblr media
Doomed & Stoned
Album Cover of the Year
Alright, as much praise as Doomed & Stoned is heaping on the esteemed Mr. Burke, there’s one album cover that absolutely stole away both heart and imagination this year and that belongs to Bell Witch, who commissioned Polish painter Mariusz Lewandowski to produce this mindfuck of a masterpiece for their Doom Charting record Mirror Reaper.
BELL WITCH
‘Mirror Reaper’ (October 2017)
Tumblr media
Here’s the full panorama. The piece is titled ‘Esencja wolności.’ If you had to guess what that means what would you suppose? I translated it as “Essence Freedom” and asked one of our former contributors who lives in Poland for a more accurate one. “The Essence of Freedom,” she responded. “Now it’s correct.” This sheds a whole new light for me on the Bell Witch album, which speaks of the relationship between life, death, and loss (unpacked nicely by Jacob Mazlum in his review here).
Tumblr media
While Mariusz may not the first to play with the idea of the interdimensional mirror, scarcely has it been depicted more effectively. In fact, it’s become something of a recurring theme in his oils. I enthusiastically encourage you to dive into this incredible artist’s work.

Capitol View Studio will narrow its focus in the new year.
When Bryan Frazier opened Capitol View Studio in 2017, the 2,300-square-foot space was a multipurpose performance and visual arts space as well as recording studio. But the studio will narrow its focus in 2019: Frazier plans to expand to a full-service recording studio with infrequent, if any, live shows.
The building's Big Room, as Frazier calls it, is home to the recording studio, which consists of a control room and an isolation room for recording vocals. Frazier, who lives with his girlfriend in the apartment in the rear portion of the building, also works on his screen-printing projects in the space. There have also been a few live shows in the Big Room, which boasts acoustics meticulously crafted by Mark Colbert, the studio's audio engineer and producer. But, according to Frazier, the way forward for Capitol View will not be as a venue.
"I'm seriously scaling back on the live shows because I don't want it to be a venue," Frazier said. "We're kind of coming to that point where things need to start going their own way, [with] the studio being only a recording studio and very focused."
In addition to Capitol View Studio, the building is also home to the Arkansas Music & Arts Foundation (AMAF), a nonprofit fundraising organization that, according to Frazier, advocates for the visual arts and music. The organization, coupled with Frazier's use of the space for his screen-printing project, helped establish Capitol View as a source for artists of many different mediums.
According to Frazier, hosting shows in the Big Room was an effective promotional opportunity for the studio. "It was great for promotion because artists wanted to see it, music fans wanted to come see a show, and the shows sounded amazing in there," Frazier said.
For the future of the studio, Frazier said he envisions the control room, which is now in the front of the building, in the back. The space at the front of the building would be used as a "dry" drum room — a space to record drums with very little reverb — and the apartment in the rear of the building would serve as a lounge or green room for artists.
"It'd be really great for an artist to come and actually live there for a week and record. ... [It's] in a pretty cool space that's right downtown, and kinda hidden at the same time," Frazier said.
Frazier said the studio is able to produce a warm sound, one that can largely be attributed to Colbert's vintage preamps and rack-mounted gear. "There's a richer sound to the way he produces these records," Frazier said. "Sometimes it's a little difficult to describe a producer's style because some people are producers, some people are engineers, [and] Mark really is both. He's a great engineer, he's really knowledgeable, and the guy's a bona fide electrician. He could wire a building if he needed to because he does live sound. He's done live sound forever." The studio uses a Pro Tools HD rig in its control booth.
Colbert, in addition to his role as Capitol View's primary audio engineer and Frazier's business partner, runs live sound at the Rev Room. Frazier said Colbert brings his history as a professional drummer and accomplished producer in Los Angeles to Capitol View.
"He's an integral part of the studio," Frazier said. "I would never run the studio. I just wouldn't do it. I don't have the skill set to do it, I'm more the artist type, and Mark really is a business partner when it comes to that. He's the key ingredient to the studio. And he does most of the recruiting. It helps that he runs sound at a popular venue, so he talks to everybody."
As a result of some of that recruiting, Capitol View has produced several albums and EPs, including Mark Currey's album "Tarrant County," Sumokem's "Warning/Emerald" and Townsend's "Show Me Home." All the live drum tracks on Dazz & Brie's 2017 album "Can't Chase Girls & Your Money Too" were produced by Capitol View and engineered by Colbert, and Big Piph's "Anarchy," an NPR Tiny Desk Contest submission, was recorded at Capitol View.
"We've been fortunate to work with artists we know, and friends that we love, and music we really enjoy recording," Frazier said. "Some studios have to record and produce and mix and listen to music they don't care for, and we've been lucky to produce music we really enjoy listening to."
Capitol View recently finished a track as part of a project with Nashville-based nonprofit Operation Song, a songwriting therapy program for veterans and active duty military. After a weekend retreat in August at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, Frazier co-wrote his first song with a veteran, and he said he'll help launch the website and social media for "Operation Song: Little Rock."
Frazier said Capitol View is looking forward to maturing as a studio and continuing to serve musicians in the coming year. "We've got some great records under our belt, I think we have a focused plan, and it's going to be a great year," he said. "It's going to be a new year in Little Rock in many ways, and we're all really excited about it."

After a whirlwind year spent in the studio and on the road, Pallbearer will be returning to a stage near you in early 2018. Continuing their crusade behind critically acclaimed third album Heartless, the four-piece will be trekking across North America throughout the New Year. Check out the full tour itinerary below.
Released in March of 2017 via Profound Lore in North America (and Nuclear Blast in Europe), Heartless is a 7-song album that finds Pallbearer at their their most pummeling yet. Grander in scope than any previous pursuits, Heartless holds fast to a sophisticated sonic architecture that digs into primeval roots and leans on unshakeable hooks. Recorded straight-to-tape and produced by the band themselves, the album was then mixed with Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, Melvins, Soundgarden) and is doubtlessly the band’s most virtuosic work to date. The record bears no shortage of surprises—a three-part harmony will be followed up by prog rock sprints, anthemic choruses are bristled by gnarled guitars and torrid backbeats.
Heartless has received a myriad of accolades throughout 2017, including #5 Best Metal Song of 2017 (SPIN) and #6 Best Metal Album of 2017 (Rolling Stone), also nabbing a “Letter of Recommendation” from the New York Times. Don’t miss your chance to hear Heartless unfold live once again and stay tuned for more news.
