Rambling 241: The Forest of Shadows
What connects us to the Shadow Realm so deeply? Why do the Mayans continue to reveal deeper and deeper roots associated with the Egyptians? And how do the Sea People have such massive advancements on even the most technological of civilizations? Trying to find any information on the Shadow Realm after consistent data shows ancient research teams contained Jinn and other Shadow Realm creatures as members, the duo are taken far back in time into the past of the Persians, back when they were still known as the Sumerians. What pops up in this research answers questions the duo didn’t even know they had, but leave new standing questions behind.

I still can't get over the oldest joke humanity has a record of. Like, not only is it a "<blank> walks into a bar", but it's a pun! We've been making puns this entire god damn time! Things have been walking into bars for millennia!

"So the world’s oldest names that we know belong not to some great conqueror or prophet, but to ordinary citizens—an accountant, a slave owner and some slaves."

This is also the Sumerian goddess Inanna/ Ishtar. She was hung naked on a stake, and was subsequently resurrected and ascended from the underworld.
The mother goddess, goddess of the ancients, has had many names throughout the various pagan religions in history. She has been known as Astarte, Ishtar, Ashtoreth, Cybele, Rhea, Demeter, Ceres, Aphrodite, Venus, Diana, and Freya.
All the fun things about Christianity's Easter ARE pagan. Bunnies, as well as the name Easter, are from the pagan festival of Eostre, a great German northern goddess of the dawn "bringer of light", whose symbol was a rabbit or hare. Exchange of eggs is an ancient custom, celebrated by many pagan cultures representing spring and rebirth.
So much wrong has been done in the name of the Christian religion. Remembering that history has given you richer traditions than you can be truly aware of and that memes shouldn't be taken at face value.
It’s that time of year again. Courtesy of digitalhammurabi.com
Addition about the image, courtesy of Twitter user @lui_log: wrt the background image, which is a stone plaque showing a winged goddess flanked by owls: “Also, we don't know whether this is a depiction of Ishtar, as the piece has been looted, thus has no archaeological context that could point us to whom it shows. Nor does it bear an inscription. The owls could mean that it is Ishtar's sister Ereshkigal, Goddess of the Underworld.”

I think if indiana jones' adoring students ever went on an Adventure(tm) with him it would be really funny if that was the turn off. like, a routine dig he was leading for the school goes awry and he has to get all cocky gunslinger ladies man hero mode and the students are like. hey what the fuck. his shirt gets ripped up revealing he's jacked and that one girl is immediately wiping the 'I love you' make up off her eyes. an entire room filled with artifacts gets destroyed while they make an escape and the kids are all horrified. "professor jones. how many people have you killed" "well, do you count the damn nazis as people-" "UNFORTUNATELY YES. LEGALLY YES. ARE ALL ARCHEOLOGISTS MURDERERS." he's flirting with some random woman on the dig and all the students are like what the hell. you can't talk like that. where did the droning and stutter go. why are you not flustered. she inevitably swoons into his arms or something and they're like "oh my God eww he's so sweaty. ma'am literally what's wrong with you. blink twice if you need help". they're so betrayed to find out he never even NEEDED glasses, he was wearing nonprescription lenses in class. Indy's lowkey hurt he's like I thought you guys thought I was cool :( and they're like 'yeah when you're in a bowtie and telling us about sumarian gardening techniques. WHY do you have a whip right now you freak'

If any trans peeps are looking for tatto suggestions, this is the Cunaiform for Inanna.
#Inanna also know as Ishtar#she was the goddess of love; war and sex#is often read as an early inspiration for Aphrodite#Queen of Heaven#but we have to fogive this monarch for how badass she is#she wasn’t the biggest bitch in the Sumarian pantheon but the Assyrians who absorbed the former absolutely loved her#she was known for taking other gods powers/domains probably because the Assyrians put her abover their own high god as favoured#also some possible links to the orphic myth as she went to the underworld and was brought back by her “attendant”#this ended up with her husband being taken in her place which caused the changing seasons#also mentions of her seem and specifically the way her name is written mean she might be older than the sumarians#i.e. older than our first known written language#re tattos I'm sticking with the symbol of Lillith; the first woman who was cast aside for refusing to be subservient to Adam.#mythology

Nahida & Wanderer
[GENSHIN MASTERLIST]
NOTES: Not Beta Read, Sibling dynamic, Sarcastic Wanderer, Nahida and Scaramouche as Found Family (Genshin Impact), Nahida & Scaramouche Friendship (Genshin Impact), Nahida Being a Little Shit (Genshin Impact), Not a lot though, I just like that that's an existing tag, Wanderer fixes a doll for Nahida in this one
SUMMARY: "Nahida always comes up to Wanderer with the most mundane problems. He has a hard time refusing her, however."
WORD COUNT: 1090
[AO3 LINK]
Wanderer practically threw down his hat on his desk, grumbling to himself in annoyance. He was dripping water onto the intricate Sumarian carpet he bought for his room. Great.
“What’s wrong?” Nahida’s high tone caught him off guard and he whipped his head around. There she sat, on the edge of his bed, looking up at him innocently as if she wasn’t invading his privacy by being there.
“What are you doing here?” he said in a snide tone. Nahida opened up her hands like she was showing off a little bird. Instead she was holding a small doll made out of well-worn fabric. It looked like it was loved greatly by whichever child that had owned it.
“What’s this garbage?”
“A small child gave me their doll after I helped her find her lost dog. I tried to refuse her gift, but she wouldn’t let me.”
“And? Why is that my problem?” He was starting to lose his patience. It wasn’t often, but every so often Nahida would come to him with absurdly mundane issues like these.
“It’s head is tearing off. You know how to fix it, don’t you?”
Wanderers expression softened. Oh.. He took the doll from Nahida’s hands. “...I’ll see what I can do, hold on.”
Nahida seemed surprised to hear this. “You’re going to fix it right now?”
“Do you want me to or not?” She shook her head yes, not wishing to test him any further.
The doll got damp, even just from him holding it, reminding him that he was still drenched from the rain. It was going to have to wait. The sooner he fixed up this doll, the sooner he didn’t have to think about this any more. Examining the doll further, it could use more than just a little needle and thread.
“There is a big bowl in my kitchen, could you please fill it with warm water and a little bit of soap before bringing it back here?”
Nahida nodded enthusiastically and disappeared into his small kitchen. Meanwhile, Wanderer opened his desk drawer and took out a small sewing kit to get to work.
“What are you doing!” Nahida gasped in mild surprise right behind his shoulder when she saw the doll disassembled on Wanderers desk.
“I’m taking out the stuffing so we can clean it. Just place the bowl on the desk already.” This annoying woman. As if she didn’t know what he was doing already. She had filled the bowl with the right temperature water as well.
She could probably fix it on her own if she wanted to. She just wanted to watch HIM do it. She observed his every move with full admiration as he gently bathed the different fabric parts of the doll, before blowing them dry with his Anemo powers and putting the stuffing back in. He wasn’t the most skilled at sewing the doll back together, but it got the job done.
“Here’s your stupid doll.” He said, avoiding her eyes.
Nahida smiled with childlike wonder as the doll was placed back in her hands, but she did not leave like he had hoped.
“The girl was originally from Mondstad.” she said. Wanderer remained silent, leaning back in his desk chair with an unimpressed look on his face. “It seems like different regions all have different ways of making dolls. This one has special buttons for it’s eyes, while they just embroider them on in Sumeru. The girl said she had picked it up from the ground, but I suspect it was a handmade gift for someone.”
“And so it found its way in your hands.” Wanderer rested his face on the palm of his hand. “What were you doing anyways, helping out little babies on the street. Don’t you have anything better to do?”
Nahida smiled knowingly. He knew she analyzed every little detail of what he said and how he moved, but he was past caring about it, even if it was extremely annoying to him.
“I find it very important to take time out of my day to spend with the people of Sumeru. I have to listen to their problems as their archon. Even issues as small as these can tell me a lot about their feelings and interpersonal relationships.” She giggled as she looked at the doll in her hand. “The dog was asleep in the dog house by the way.”
“Aren’t you quite the detective.”
“What about you?” she asked. “Why are you so soaked?”
Wanderer sneered. He sincerely hoped she wouldn’t look into his head right now. The truth is that he brought an Amurta student to the infirmary after she slipped and fell down the stairs. He would’ve ignored her if he could’ve, but unfortunately for him, there wasn’t anybody else around at the time. If he had gone straight home after class, he would have been watching the start of the rainfall from his window with a book in his lap.
“Thanks for noticing. I was on my way back from class when I got caught in a rainstorm. I thought Sumeru was a sunny country.”
“Sumeru experiences rainy season every summer. They blow in from the cold region of Snezhnaya. They’re essential for the survival of the rainforest.” Nahida always seemed happy to explain things to people, so she took any opportunity she deemed fit.
Wanderer rolled his eyes at her. “That was a rhetorical statement, thank you very much.”
Nahida giggled. “Are you just going to sit there in your wet clothes?”
He sincerely hoped she could notice his displeasure at her hypocrisy. “Well. I WAS going to immediately dry off, but it seems something distracted me from doing so.”
“Oh dear,” Nahida averted her eyes, looking a little guilty. As she should. “I didn’t mean to interrupt. To be fair, I didn’t ask you to fix it right this moment. That was your decision.”
Wanderer felt heat creep up his neck. “It isn’t like I’ll get sick anyways. Besides, you got what you wanted, didn’t you? Now are you going to leave, or what? I’ll warn you, I could dry off my clothes the same way I dried off the doll, but if I do that you would leave this room a watered daikon.”
Nahida giggled merrily and ran back to the door. She turned around just before leaving. “Thank you, hat guy. Maybe you could teach me how to make one of these some day.”
Wanderer was left in silence. He looked outside as lightning flashed. Tch. How annoying.

2024: Year of the Dragon and the Wisdom of the Dragon Spirit Animal
Creation & Cosmos The dragon is a celestial symbol of life force and the power of manifestation, the primal waters or First Cause in countless civilizations across the globe. In Hindu beliefs the dragon is also associated with the First Cause and is said to produce soma, the elixir of immortality. Zu (or Asag), the Sumarian dragon who stole the Tablets of Law that maintained the order of the Universe from the great god Enlin and was subsequently killed by the Sun god Nintura to prevent the destruction of the universe is the oldest known legend of a dragon. In the Babylonian creation myth, there are two elemental forces: Apsu, male spirit of fresh water and the abyss, and Tiamat, the female spirit of salt water and chaos. Tiamat was a dragon that was killed by the creation God Marduk; her severed body created the heavens and the earth. The Babylonians also placed a spirit animal in the four cardinal directions of which one was the eagle-headed dragon. Quetzalcoatl was the Aztec and Toltec benevolent plumed serpent god that created humankind, civilized people by teachings them agriculture, how to write, keep time, music and dance. He was known as Kulkulkan to the Maya and Gucumatz to the Quiche of Peru.

Mythologic Geekery: Aphrodite
Alright, let me continue with Aphrodite. And she is super special. You know why? Because we know exactly where she came from, because her entire history is documented. We literally can trace her back to basically the very beginning. No comparative mythology needed
Part of the reason is, that she was just so god damn popular.
Aphrodite basically "descended" from the Phoenician Astarte. Astarte meanwhile was one of those universal goddesses. She stood for sex, beauty, healing, but also for war and hunting. She had a pretty big cult that spread into Ancient Greece, where she slowly was turned into Aphrodite.
Astarte, meanwhile, was influenced by Ishtar/Inanna from the Mesopotamian pantheon. Ishtar and Inanna are the same goddess, it is just that Ishtar was the semitic name given to her, while Inanna was the Mesopotamian and Sumarian name, with the later going back a lot further.
Inanna was associated with sex and beauty, but also with war and political power. And yes, there is some theories that Athena, too, was influenced by Ishtar as well. The semetic people also associated Ishtar as a "queen of the sky" and though already that the planet Venus represented her. So, yeah, that association goes back a long while.
Now, of course, pre-Mesopotamia we do no longer have written stuff about her. But we have enough idols found that it is pretty clear this mythologic entity was around before.
We are fairly certain, that she started out as a dawn goddess (as dawn was already something associated with Ishtar and Inanna), that hence already had the entire "beauty" thing going on, as both things were associated a lot. And because beauty and sex are kinda linked, that was picked up soon enough.
Fun fact: Rapunzel from the fairy tale? Yeah, she is probably decendent from the same dawn goddess. Just that she over time got divorced from her godly context.
