Review: The indie-pop up-comer Such Is Life shares her newest bursting single ‘Alive’, both bubbly and lyrically impactful

Taking inspiration from the likes of Wolf Alice, Avril Lavigne, Arlo Parks, and Florence and the Machine, the upcoming indie-pop artist Such Is Life delivers a refreshing dosage of feel-good sounds and more personal and emotive lyrics. With support from BBC Introducing Merseyside and BBC Coventry on past singles, Such Is Life continues to impress even while making a name for herself on the scene, and her newest offering ‘Alive’ is sure to be just as well-received by the masses if not more.

Cascading into ‘Alive’ with brightly infused electric guitar riffs and steady drum beats, Such Is Life makes sure that the soundscape is one of an immediate pick-me-up, soaring into gorgeous vibrant tones you can’t help but feel good hearing. Pairing it back a little once the verse commences, occasional bass twangs and a thumping beat intertwine as Such Is Life delivers a gripping spoken-sung delivery of an important lyrical message. Soon infrequent electric guitar strums add an edge of colour back while still keeping things more stripped-down, erring between an edge of melancholia while remaining bouncily upbeat. The chorus radiates with complete bliss though as the soundscape flourishes into full-force, allowing for each instrument to burst at higher volume, especially with the frequent guitar strums and an emphatic riff blooming. The entire release is utterly commandeered by Such Is Life’s vocals though, so hauntingly captivating the listener in higher ranges before offering rich, slightly lower toned segments capturing every essence of emotion that ‘Alive’ craves to depict.

Penned during a time particularly difficult for Such Is Life, ‘Alive’ offers a narrative that might feel a little too familiar for those who suffer with anxiety. As she writes of the overwhelming flood of emotion taking over in a social situation, ‘Alive’ sees Such Is Life attempting to deal with those all-too-consuming thoughts and feelings whilst surrounded by people who couldn’t feel less comforting. Finding herself dissociating from the event she’s stuck within, lines like ‘now I’m sat here, walls are caving in, I’m losing my mind’ heavily capture the sense of sudden panic that can take over whilst the party continues around her blissfully unaware. The chorus brings some relief though, with Such Is Life exiting the situation and grounding herself while encouraging listeners do the same: ‘Why can’t I breathe? ‘Cause I run outside, slam the front door tight, look into the sky and think I’m alive.’ The second verse also sees a light at the end of the tunnel in those who will try to understand and allow you to feel seen, as a friend notices her disappearance and sits beside her, ‘you ask me if I’m fine.’ As Such Is Life uses ‘Alive’ to explores her own experiences of anxiety, pressure to fit in at parties and the discovery that she might have autism, the track is one covering many important themes she’s personally dealt with while also creating a presence and building awareness for those in similar positions to feel less alone.

What a day with these two #TwinSupreme. We have been at the baseball field for 9 hours, cold and thuggin’ it out! I danced a lot to stay warm (which embarrassed my daughter) but, whatever! The @49ers lost their 3rd string quarterback, then their 4th string quarterback, then lost the game. The @rockstarbaseball team won the tournament and it was a wrap. They are currently undefeated in tournament play and crazy-fun to watch. Watching the 49ers lose made my stomach hurt but that goes with the territory when you are a 49er Faithful from birth. #SuchIsLife 😐 It was an incredible season. In a winter evening, in some coffee house sharing a muffin with another woman. I will look at you from a distance and I will think of how much your face has changed. You have wrinkles on your skin, you have a rounder belly but you still smile crookedly through your black round spectacles. Oh! And you still don't know how to use a fork. By this time, you too see a woman staring at you so anxiously. You remove your specs and cringe your forehead, maybe wondering where you have seen her. And then you recall that in the days of your youth, there was a woman you called 'life'. We had shared many muffins in many coffee shops, we have walked many lanes, we have kissed a million times. As I think of walking towards you and you feel likewise, something stops us. There are a thousand questions in our head and unfortunately, without any proper answer. How have we lived all these years without each other? What if you don't remember me completely? Life has given me such a wonderful time to just look at you from a distance and be alright because you seem happy? Are you happy? Does she make you happy? Does she sit on your laps while you watch your cricket matches? Does she wake you up in the middle of the night cause she wants to go out or she is hungry? Do you look at her the way you used to look into my eyes and say that your life would be too sweet without me but you don't like desserts unless I offer you one? Do you hold her waist and draw her close while you kiss her? Do you remember me?

So, I walk past you and I smile because I know that somewhere in your heart, you remember what it was to share a muffin together.

How to not have an existential crisis:

Yes, many things are shit and the world is ending. But the world has been ending since beginning and nothing in life is 100% certain or taken for granted.

Living, and living a life you want adds value to yourself and the world. Having shitty things happening around you doesn’t mean you have failed life. Make choices if you can and choose how you want to live your life.

You have to believe that your personal goals and values are worth pursuing, and you work hard to realize them (instead of just dreaming about them). You have to believe that self improvement and being a better person also influences others positively. Kindness brings out the good in others.

There is always going to be uncertainty. But isn’t that exciting too, not knowing where you’ll be in 10 years?

Because even if you do, life will always turn out different than what you can think of.
