So like, I feel like people are so preoccupied with ships that they missed the part of season seven when they bucked like, one of the most common space opera tropes. In a goddamn children's show. Voltron earned it’s return to earth. It’s where we start our story and characters keep bringing it up throughout the series. Yea, earth is used to raise the stakes but they make earth it’s own character and damn they did not need to write it so well.
So yea earth being taken over by the galra is a given, it was always going to happen. Then the heroes come in and save the day and earth is restored. But the two episodes spent on the earth backstory build up the garrison and the military as a major players in the war. When the paladins return they make it visually (uniforms) and textually (do you paladins not understand the chain of command? Your CO said it was to dangerous) clear that the paladins are still kids. It lets Lance, Hunk, and Pidge become kids again when they’re reunited with their families. The paladins depend on earth as much as earth depends on them.
Voltron is still Earth’s savior, but it brought agency to the people of earth, rather than going the easy root and just using earth and everyone’s families as a plot device to give our main characters motivation. And that’s not something I was expecting and it’s pretty darn cool.
Like I fully expected the paladins to science fantasy their way into saving earth, by unlocking a new power with voltron during the big battle but nope, they went and focused on the development some old and new characters in a way that empowered them and makes the narrative more interesting as a whole.
TLDR: Voltron is a fucking extra science fantasy children's show that didn’t take the easy way out when writing the save the earth portion of the series and gave Earth agency instead of using it as a plot device. And that’s nice.
