Shajan Velaeden is an optometrist by day and “plant daddy” by night. Living in the Melbourne CBD there’s few opportunities for having a garden but Shajan bought his apartment for the unusually large courtyard. Inside and out is full of beautiful plant collections from highly prized aroids to unusual caudex and succulent plants. It’s a calming green haven to come home to after a busy of day at work.
“When you enter you just get this whiff of fresh air, of plants, the room smell is actually sort of relaxing. I say hi to the plants every morning and evening, they’re sort of like your little babies, and so each time when you come home you see the new growth or new bloom you get excited.”
Shajan grew up in Singapore with his identical twin brother and two sisters. “I was born to mixed parentage, my dad’s Indian my mum’s Chinese so we always had a very interesting of both the Indian and the Chinese side of the family… Mum loves orchids, she has a whole collection of orchids and I remember growing up she had this whole row of plants that she would grow and she would get us to water the plants when she gets to work. That’s probably where [my interest] stems from.”
Inside his home is a vertical wall full of anthuriums, philodendrons and orchids, favourite plants that he can look at every day such as the dark purple Anthurium luxurians x papillilaminum or the long, leathery leaves of Anthurium veitchii x ‘Red Beauty’. The structure is a 1000kg load bearing garage shelf. “You want to invest in something that lasts a long while. And because all the plants have a water reservoir they are pretty heavy.” The extra humidity can also lead to rust, so he made sure the steel was powder coated too.
There’s also a paludarium – “a mini ecosystem where it has its own climate. Majority of the plants used in here are carnivorous plants because they are quite small, they don’t grow big, minimal maintenance is required.” It’s also full of mini orchids, begonias, ferns, and mosses loving the tropical environment created by the pool of water and heat from a grow light.
Shajan’s courtyard is home to a large succulent and cacti collection to make the most of the sun and fresh air. Some of his favourites include the Medusa’s head euphorbia and the Mexican boulder (Beaucarnea hookeri syn. Calibanus hookeri) - “it has a nice, beautiful caudex below, like a soccer ball, part of it gets buried underground. But what’s so beautiful about it is this long, wiry, blue-green leaves” adding lots of texture and a different colour to the collection.
The courtyard also has a glasshouse for “ugly beautiful” succulents and caudex plants. “The more gnarly, knobby, arrow shaped they are the more I see the beauty in them. I like things that are just oddly shaped and the more oddly shaped they are the more beautiful to me.”
“It gives you that rewarding and satisfying vision every day that you come back [home]. The wall is actually alive, it’s changing every day, makes you transcend to another world.”

@theimpalpable sent in: Caradoc attempts to not be as loud as usual; he doesn't want to upset Lamon on his birthday by being too dramatically noisy. So he casually steps inside with Lexine by his side, both of them carrying different items. Caradoc is holding two gift bags, one from himself and another from Lexine; both destined to land on Lamon's hands. In the smallest bag, Lamon'll be able to find a box that contains a cat flower pot, along with a botanical-themed stationery set that perhaps could be useful for his classes. Upon the biggest bag, rests a succulent throw pillow and a plant plushie, these last two being Caradoc's idea.
"Happy Birthday, Lam!" Caradoc says with excitement, grinning from ear to ear. "Look what Lex made for you, ain't they cool?!" His chin tries to point at what Lexine is holding, which is a tray of succulent cupcakes. Worry not! She tried her best to make sure the ingredients were lactose-free. The girl smiles, shoulders gently lifting so the cupcakes can be seen better. "Happy Birthday, Lam."
(HELLO I come here to celebrate Lam's birthday IHWEDHWD, hope this is okay, dear Ferre!!! If not pls feel free to skip! Hope you're doing well, CARE YOU LOTS)
His birthday is, unshockingly, no different from a regular day off, sans the grading and lesson planning that always has an urgent deadline. Not that he minds it- it is rather peaceful and while he is, in all technicalities, alone for the day, he doesn’t necessarily feel lonely. It was his decision not to go home for the holidays. To be with his family mainly because his parents were taking a vacation to Europe alone. And his sister, well, apparently she has a boyfriend from France and he’s invited her to spend the holidays with his family. He didn’t want to third wheel either couple.
( He’s done that one too many times, if he’s honest. )
Henceforth why he spent December 25th in the diner with Ray, who strangely enough also decided he wasn’t going back to Singapore for the holidays. He should’ve known that Ray would have made an OCCASION out of it. And gotten their friends in on it too.
“How did you-“ A pointed ( but still half-hearted ) look on his face towards Ray behind the counter. “You told them, didn’t you?”
Ray shrugs, as if Lam were asking him about, say, the weather. “They’re our friends- of course they’ll wanna celebrate. Besides, you sure you want me in charge of making you a cake?”
Touché, although Lam doesn’t say that outright. He imagines that Lexine probably persuaded Ray to let her take care of providing the food. Between the two of them, she is the baker, after all. And the one with common sense too- no one wants a stomachache on their birthday anyways.
“What are you two- you didn’t have to do this much.” Getting a set of cupcakes is one thing, it’s another to get such a collection of gifts ( if he wants to take the succulent pillow out and hug it for the rest of his stay here, he won’t say ). Licking the icing off of one cupcake though- it feels a bit like a crime to do so- he glances over at Doc, who is being weirdly considerate…it’s nice, but also-
“Just say something. Please” He blurts out suddenly. It’s too weird, Doc not talking and well, being loud next to Ray. “You don’t- it’s weird when you’re quiet.”
The heat rushes to his face as the urge to hide his face suddenly grows. That’s just the kind of people they are, aren’t they? The kind to celebrate even the smallest of occasions, like HIS BIRTHDAY. “…Thanks. For celebrating.”
#theimpalpable#theimpalpable ( caradoc. )#theimpalpable ( lexine. )#( verse: cull the shame. )#answered ( lamon. )#ALEX!! me ignoring you?? never#🤩🤩🤩 THANK YOU THO?? so much for sending this in as well <3#lexine read his mind tho....he REALLY likes that pillow she got him :'D#it will be on his bed when it comes home#that and also the fact that lam finds it TOO WEIRD when doc is being quiet has me JFKLSDJFLK#lam just admit you enjoy his company even if it's a test of patience for you :'D#but also i hope!! this is good for you- pls let me know if u need me to change anything#and as always pls have a wonderful day <3 <3 <3

Overview of Gardens by the Bay's eco-friendly initiatives.
The gardens are a leading example of eco-friendly initiatives in the city-state. Thanks to its commitment to sustainability, it has become one of Singapore's most beloved attractions for tourists and locals alike. The garden park includes four main eco-friendly initiatives: energy conservation, water recycling, organic waste management, and biodiversity conservation. To reduce energy usage, Gardens by the Bay uses solar power for lighting systems throughout the park and cooling systems indoors. A closed-loop water system recycles wastewater from fountains and restrooms back into reservoirs or is reused for irrigation or cleaning. Organic waste from food courts is collected daily to be processed into compost, which is used in landscaping works around the gardens.

In the first dream, I was attending my high school graduation dinner banquet, and just like with the camps, we were put at tables by register number. So my high school crush and I were at the same table. My parents and theirs talked, and I think my parents were trying to subtly hint that I was interested in their daughter.
I woke up, and went back to sleep. In the next dream, I was back in my parents' house in Penang, Malaysia, but now it sat very close to a train line, resembling our church in Singapore. And my family had renovated what had once been a one-storey, 4 room house into a mansion.
The entrance landing had racks of succulent plants on both sides, and the door was hardwood. Inside, I saw the place had the layout of the old house, except voided of furniture and completely reorganised. It was my first time "home" in years (never mind that my family lives in Singapore, not Penang) so I asked my parents where all my stuff had gone - specifically I wanted to locate an old USB drive containing some old files I wanted to retrieve. They told me it was "somewhere"?
I dug around the first floor - there was now a standing piano and an organ - and searched the interior of the piano stool until I came upon a LED torch shaped like a ladybug, and delighted myself with the fact that it still worked. But the USB drive was nowhere to be found.
I went upstairs, and discovered that the entire second floor, being new, was lavish as all hell. There were a least 5 bedrooms that I counted on that floor alone, including a guest bedroom in the middle of the 2nd floor with two jumbo beds the size of small swimming pools. Apparently my parents had decided to get enough rooms in the house built for all family members to each have their own room (minus the parents who shared theirs) and each bedroom had its own ensuite bathroom. I was fascinated with how they had interlocked the room shapes.
On entering what was meant to be my room, I found something that resembled my partner M's bedroom: it had a tall window overlooking some grassy wilderness, through which that abandoned train track ran. My room was empty save for a singular bed, but even then, it seemed cushy.
The entire scenario delighted me because it felt, for the first time, like there was enough room for all of us in that house.
I woke up in the middle of my explorations.

How to Repot Succulents
Edit: this was something I wrote awhile back and it's been in my drafts for too long. Although I don't keep rosettes anymore, the picture is still useful to see the roots as reference.
1) Remove all the old soil/potting media.
2) Remove dead roots too. How to see if roots are dead: dead roots are brown and dried. And they come off easily. So, what you can do is to use 2 fingers, thumb and index finger, and lightly pull the roots, running your fingers from top to bottom. Don't pull the roots hard, because the good roots will come off too. Gently pull on the roots, the dead ones should come off. Over time you'll find out how much force will be good. It's better to remove some good roots than to leave dead roots on the plant. Dead roots rot when there's water, and after potting the succulent up, if there's a lot of rotting going on beneath the soil, your succulent might rot.
3) if you removed alot of good roots, it's best to leave it in the open, on a dry surface, like in the picture, for at least half a day, for the wound to heal (callous) over, before potting it up. A callous is formed when there's a dry and slightly wrinkled layer on the wound. But usually if it's echeveria roots that are pulled out, you can't see the callous well. So just air them for half a day to 1 whole day.
4) Prepare the potting media. Your mix should suit your growth conditions and should be dry. More direct Sun = need more water (quantity or frequency) = need more succ soil. If your plants are going to be exposed to rain, then less soil is needed (then u just gotta water them during the hot seasons). Direct Sun vs indirect sunlight, direct Sun is the plant is "looking" at the SUN directly. Indirect Sun is the plant "looks" at the SKY directly. I say "directly" as in no blockage, no tinted glass in the way, etc.
So for myself, my plants only get indirect bright light for half a year, so I put them in ≥90% coarse material eg. Pumice, peca, volcanic sand, and ≤10% succ soil. DO NOT pot up your succulent in moist media. Use dry media. Air-dry the media if necessary.
5) Find a pot for the succulent. Usually we will suggest you to find a pot that is at least the same diameter as the rosette. Or if the root system is good, find a pot that will not cause the roots to touch the bottom or the sides (unless the rosette is really small and root system is huge, then you find a pot with a diameter that is 1 inch bigger than the rosette diameter). BUT for Haworthia, if the root system is huge, find a pot that don't allow the roots to touch the sides or bottom. For Haworthia, I would find a pot suitable for the roots, and less about the plant itself.
6) To pot up the plant, hold the leaves or stem of the plant, and hover over the pot. You should let the roots be suspended in the empty pot, and the leaves of the succulent should be just above the rim of the pot. Don't pot succulents deep inside the pot, or you'll restrict its growth. Then, pour your mixed media around the plant, until it's full to the brim of the pot, OR just below the leaves (usually we try not to let any soil touch the leaves of the succulent, so if the leaves HAVE to touch the potting media, we'll put a layer of coarse media or gravel on the surface so that the leaves don't stay on a moist surface for too long during watering).
7) Pat/lightly hit the side of the pot, to make the media move around slightly, to fill in any spaces in the pot, and top up the media if necessary.
8) Put the pot at the place where you want to grow the succulent, and try not to change its growth area, unless it's necessary, because it'll need to get used to the micro climate of the area.
9) Wait for 1 week after potting up the succulent before watering. Let the roots get used to the new conditions first. And the first few waters should be just trickles or even droplets, depending on how water-sensitive the plant is (eg. echeveria vs haworthia, echeveria is more prone to overwatering, so the amount of water I use will be less than that for haworthia, and some succs are even more sensitive to water than eches, so I'll be very careful with watering for those).
