I do think Blazing Saddles handled its one depiction of native americans very poorly, and the full extent of its representation of chinese workers on the railroad is they were literally just there. not even one single speaking line. unclear if this is worse or better than the redface.
it's fucking phenomenal at lampooning antiblack racism though. extremely blatant, extremely funny satire, which is constantly and loudly saying "racism is the philosophy of the terminally stupid at best and morally depraved at worst, and we should all be pointing and laughing at them 24/7"
plus the main character is a heroic black man who has to navigate a whole lot of bullshit but is constantly smirking at the extraordinarily stupid racists and inviting the audience into the joke. the one heroic white character is a guy who was suicidally depressed until he met the protagonist and they just instantly became buds, and he's firmly in a supporting role the whole time and happy to be there. the protagonist saves the day with the help of his black friends from the railroad, and uses the position of power he was given to uplift not only those friends, but all the railroad workers of other minorities too, in an explicit show of solidarity.
anyone saying "Blazing Saddles is racist" had better be talking about its treatment of non-black minorities. it had better not be such superficial takes as "oh but they say the n-word all the time" or "they have nazis and the kkk in there!" because goddamn if that's the full extent of your critique I very seriously suggest you read up on media analysis. there is too much going over your head, you need to learn to recognize satire.
I am nothing if not a sucker for realistic-leaning explanatory depictions of workplace environments, and The Trainee is delivering such an incredible dish of it
And the fact that the show’s workplace setting is a video production company so there’s a whole meta aspect to everything!!! And the whole crew involved is clearly giving it their all, especially for a comedy!!! The lighting and cinematography is so much more decisive than GMMTV usually goes for. And there’s all these little fun editing touches. And the comedic scoring and sound effects that are a staple of Thai comedies are all mixed in with more finesse than we’re used to. Even after two episodes, it’s clearly such a labor of love for the people who worked on it ❤️
And none of this is a criticism of the other style that we’ve been seeing. That other style is what got me excited to watch Thai BLs, but I would describe it as ‘theatrical’ whereas what the team is doing for The Trainee is ‘cinematic,’ which is just so perfect with the plot and setting.
John and Yoko getting married 8 days after Paul and Linda becomes even funnier when you discover that John tried to pull it off in FOUR days in PARIS. 😂🤣🤣 omg.
ONE and Studio Bones were so funny for how they handled Mob getting hit by that van—specifically with Mob saving the cat from being run over at the same crosswalk like ten seconds beforehand. Because as the audience, when we see that he saved the cat and breathed a sigh of relief, not only does it signal to our minds that the danger has passed, but our brain is also like “Yeah. Surely there’s not going to be a second car. That’s ridiculous. The danger is definitely over.”
But then the scene doesn’t cut like we subconsciously thought it would. And the camera keeps lingering on this moment that’s supposed to be unremarkable. And it starts looking suspicious because there shouldn’t be a reason the audience would need to accompany Mob on a silent and boring walk. It’s almost like the audience is hostage for a few seconds; we keep expecting to be released into the hands of the next scene but we’re stuck in this quiet limbo moment.
saying portal’s writing aged poorly because the humor is all “rofl teh epic random!!” 2010s internet humor is like… i guess? only because a lot of that era’s internet humor was massively influenced by the writing in portal and a lot of media tried (and usually failed) to replicate it as a result. it would have aged poorly if the jokes were highly referential and/or felt out of character for anyone but they don’t
idk, the comedy in both portal and portal 2 still hold up imho. the writing is/was S tier and so when everyone else tried to emulate it, you got burnt out on that style of humor. that in no way means it aged poorly
Um. Uh. Hey. Um. Guys. Hey. What if I had maybe taken the plot from the empires smp dnd campaign that balatro-watcher rt was originally made for and maybe decided to do something else with it for you guys. Maybe. Mayhaps.
walter white and jesse's relationship really DOES shit to me. like, the way walt projects every single one of his relationships onto jesse and molds him into being a "better" version. the way jesse is the obedient wife when skyler refuses to give in to walt's bullshit and obstructs his attempts to manipulate her at every turn. the way jesse is his able-bodied(!!!) son while junior has cerebral palsy. the way jesse is his attentive student when the kids at school don't pay attention. i don't think walter ever sees jesse for what he is, only for the wish fulfilment he provides for him
