These past few days have been wild! We had a bomb cyclone storm with a high wind warning. We saw gusts above 50 mph and conditions typical with a weak hurricane. Trees and power lines were down. The power went out for about half a million people, and we were one of them.
More below
We lost power Tuesday evening. We expected a quick fix and had cheez it’s for dinner thinking it would be over soon. Then we learned a valuable transformer was damaged and the restoration would be much longer.
We still don’t have power. We’ve been eating our dinners from Costco’s food court. The blessing in all of this is that even though our neighborhood sustained heavy outages, the church, McDonald’s and Costco all stayed open.
The nights are the worst. It only got to 56 degrees in our house with no heating when outside it was 44 with a wind chill. I’ve been sleeping with 4 blankets while wearing 5 layers. My bro and mom only needed two blankets. I can’t stand the cold.
We’ve been forgoing showers, laundry and the dishes. We started using paper plates due to the dishwasher not working. I’m running out of clothes.
The real MVP of this event is my thermal underwear. It cuts out the bitter chill from the cold. I was wearing the long sleeve shirt and long pants. The long pants r great because it feels like I’m wearing pajamas in my jeans.
Then on Friday, I did a speech in skagit county to support the upcoming opening of the first clubhouse international clubhouse in that county.
Then I had a stay cation. I booked the hotel two weeks in advance for a killer deal. 153 a night at a four star hotel downtown. I planned it as a fun get away but it suddenly became a necessity. My fam and I used this opportunity to each take a hot shower bc it has been since Tuesday since we had hot water.
It also made me realize we need more emergency preparedness foods than what we have. We have a lot of food that requires hot water like instant noodles and such.
This is a rambling message. I’m grateful for my fam and the community I live in. They had a device charging center at the community center which was lovely.
Now we just wait and see. They originally said power would be back today but it’s looking more like Monday. It went out on Tuesday 😔

This entire situation has caused me to do a lot of research into tropical revolving storms, and basically even though the Sam-Simpson scale ranks hurricanes, it doesn’t account for destruction. You could get massively powerful Category 5 hurricanes but the damage they do is moderate. And on the flip side you have this, Helene was only a Category 4 and when she bursted into North Caroline she was downgraded to a tropical storm but still the sheer amount of damage and devastation…
And yes this isn’t a time for jokes, people have died, rendered homeless and some have lost everything, our hearts need to be with them now. This is also why we need to combat climate change because the reason storms have being getting worse is because of the rising temperatures, which means warmer waters, which means more intense storms.
But in the end this whole situation shows, while we humans like to think of ourselves as masters of the planet, nature still finds ways to humble us.
Super glad to hear from you, and take all the time you need to recover. However since you need some light relief, how about you look up what tropical revolving storms are called in Australia? It’s would be the perfect way to unwind - Review Anon
//Yeah, I used to watch disaster documentaries all the time when I was younger. There's something genuinely morbidly fascinating about the way they happen and the damage they can do. One of my favorites as a kid was Planet Storm, which transplanted extreme weather from Mars, Jupiter and the Sun to Earth.
//I've been going through my asks and it seems some thought I'd vanished for a couple days because i hated the latest episode of Despair Time so much. Which, again, would be funny if people hadn't actually died. I spent days listening to people on the radio looking for missing family. I sincerely don't want to joke about this situation, because it really is that awful. I get jumpy whenever I hear my walls creak now.
//Remember, just because a storm is smaller doesn't mean it's automatically weaker. I heard someone call this the Katrina of the Mountains, but at least disaster management around here hasn't turned into a mess.
//But I'm okay. We've got food, running water and should hopefully have power restored soon.
//Also...no way. There is no way they call cyclones "willy-willies" down under. I love that : P

Hotels and homes destroyed, impassable roads and thousands of people cut off. This is how Acapulco, in the Mexican state of Guerrero, has been left after the passage of Hurricane Otis, the most powerful Pacific storm to make landfall on Mexican territory in the last 30 years. The cyclone, which in 12 hours went from a tropical storm to a category 5 hurricane, the highest possible classification, has left the popular tourist destination resembling a war zone with uprooted trees, debris, roofs torn off and buildings without walls. Neither the National Meteorological Service (SMN) nor local and federal authorities were able to predict the intensity of the hurricane. Scientists were also caught by surprise. The speed with which the cyclone intensified was unusual and forced Mexican authorities to issue an evacuation alert for the area just hours before Otis made landfall.
The SMN warned at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, that the hurricane would reach Acapulco at 6:00 p.m. the following day. However, the storm arrived earlier than expected and devastated the coastal city at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday. Winds of more than 270 kilometers per hour (168 mph) hit the town and the state of Guerrero, one of the poorest in the country, destroying everything in their path. More than 500,000 people were left without electricity, internet and telephone connection in the early hours of the morning and only part of the service has so far been restored. The breakdown of communications has complicated access to the affected areas and there is still no official information on the number of victims and the amount of damage caused, although it is expected that material losses will amount to millions of dollars.
The unusual power of the hurricane has attracted the attention of the scientific community, which links the devastating power of Otis to the El Niño season, a phenomenon associated with changes in the atmosphere and the fluctuation of water temperature in the Pacific. “There is a hypothesis that it could be related to the rise in ocean temperature, which does not mean that there are more hurricanes, but it does mean that when there is one, the cyclone accelerates its formation by taking on more energy under these conditions,” explains Claudia Rojas of the Department of Process Engineering and Hydraulics of the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM).
There are those who point to a relationship between climate change and the strength of hurricanes, although the scientific community is still investigating the matter. “El Niño is inducing these cyclones to reach high categories. However, it is difficult to attribute the responsibility for Hurricane Otis to climate change,” says Christian Domínguez, a researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). “What is known on a global scale is that with climate change there will be fewer hurricanes in the Pacific, but they will be more intense,” he adds. “With the information we currently have, it is not so clear that the intensity has to do with climate change because there are not so many historical records, although we have not ruled it out.”
After making landfall, Otis was downgraded to a tropical storm after depositing heavy rainfall in several states in central and southern Mexico. However, the threat has not yet passed. “The risk is not only posed by the strength of the winds. There are more dangers that such a phenomenon can entail, such as landslides and the flooding of rivers and streams,” says Domínguez. In Acapulco, some 20,000 people live in areas susceptible to flooding or landslides. The hurricane season in the Pacific begins around May 15 and ends around November 30, as such Guerrero could still experience the consequences of other cyclones, says Rojas. “Research work has shown that after a prolonged drought, very intense rainfall events occur, as is the case with tropical cyclones that can reach these [high] categories.”
Otis is not the first hurricane in recent years to strengthen so rapidly. In 2015, Tropical Storm Patricia escalated to a Category 5 hurricane in 10 hours. The difference with the current phenomenon was that it did so offshore, and authorities in the states of Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit were able to evacuate 50,000 people before it made landfall. The storm, catalogued by the SMN as “extremely dangerous” and by the media as the “largest in history,” quickly lost strength after making landfall in Mexican territory thanks to the mountainous system of the Sierra Madre Occidental, which eroded the outer ring of the cyclone and prevented greater damage and devastation. Guerrero, in this case, did not have the same luck.
Acapulco International Airport, which receives millions of tourists every year, has been completely flooded and suffered serious damage to its infrastructure, forcing the suspension of all flights. The main highways are also closed, preventing communications with Mexico City. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had ordered his Security Cabinet to go to the affected area, but on seeing the seriousness of the situation, he decided to personally supervise the rescue efforts himself. The Mexican army has initiated an emergency protocol and 37 shelters have been set up throughout the state for victims.

Winter Life on a Small Island on the West Coast of Canada
I live on a small island on the west coast of Canada. A Mecca for boaters, a summer retreat for many, (when our population soars to 12,000-13,000 from the usual 4500 permanent dwellers), it’s a different story in the winter months. Last week the vaunted “bomb cyclone” blew through, leaving around 150,000 people ‘powerless’ on Vancouver Island, and the many small Gulf Islands.
Vancouver Island is the size of England, but the population is a mere approximate 864,000. This means that, with the exception of a few larger communities, we are scattered and remote. Some communities require people to drive on dirt logging roads, like the one below, while others are one ferry, (or more) away from the main island. To reach one of our nearby islands, crews had to be barged over, (as it’s not serviced by a ferry).
Because there was a warning, our publicly owned utility company was able to bring trucks and crews from other parts of BC in advance of the storm. This was necessary because at one point all ferries were cancelled due to the 160km winds, (105mph for American readers). Some crews drove 4-5 hours, then took a 2 hour ferry to get to Vancouver Island, then were deployed to smaller communities, up to 5 hours away from their ferry landing, or to small islands. I’m sure it was an experience for all!
These crews worked tirelessly. Major centres were up first, but our little island sustained so much damage that at one point we had 15 trucks over here. You would see the Hydro, (electric company), trucks zigzagging with the tree removal people. The volunteer fire department was out and about, manning the station, (as we lost cell service as well for a day), helping to remove trees, and putting up caution tape around downed wires. These are some views from my little neighbourhood:
For 5 days the sound of chainsaws filled the air. Crews were working 16 hour days, then they sent over 3 more crews to work through the night. November is the wettest month of the year here on the coast, as well as being dark and cold, so residents were out in force offering warm drinks and warm food to the hard working crews.
Being on a small island, we are somewhat prepared for these events. Many people have wood stoves to keep heat on, many have natural gas stoves, (although it’s run on propane here), so they can cook on the stovetop. Everyone has lanterns and candles. Some have generators. We have a trailer, that has a generator, so after a few days without power, we decamped there for a few hours one morning, enjoying filtered coffee and heat. It felt quite luxurious.
Another thing about living in a small, close knit community is the generosity of neighbours, and the communication. We have a few Facebook groups, but the one I belong to was being constantly updated, by our elected RDN official, (kudos to Vanessa Craig), by the volunteer fire department, and by residents who would post when their power was restored, so we could follow the progress. People with power were offering showers, heat, and hot food to others did not yet have power. One couple who were stuck in Vancouver, asked people to stop by their place to see if it was okay, (no trees on the building). They put their address in the social media group, and many of us went by to check, (it was fine), and reported back. No one looted the house. Now, I’m not sure I personally would post my address in a public forum, but this entire experience showed in the best of humanity.
Despite gas rationing at the island’s only gas station, as of today, (Monday), they had run out of regular and premium gas. With one “dangerous cargo” sailing per week, that means no gas on the island until Wednesday afternoon. Fortunately, there are many gas stations in Nanaimo…and the ferries are running!

Biden and Harris' Response to Hurricane Helene Is Part of a Disturbing Pattern
Hurricane Helene dissipated over the weekend, but not before smashing into Florida’s Big Bend as a category four storm, inflicting “biblical” damage
across the southern United States. After landfall, the heavy rains led to catastrophic flooding that’s killed almost 100 people so far. In the Newport area of Tennessee, about 60 miles outside Knoxville, residents were forced to scramble after the Waterville Dam failed.
And where’s Biden and Harris throughout this crisis? It’s part of an unseemly pattern with this administration: when disaster strikes, everyone runs away. A train derails in East Palestine, Ohio—the Biden White House drags their feet. Severe wildfires strike Maui, the deadliest in 100 years, and it takes Joe forever to get out there. Joe’s mind is applesauce. Kamala is too stupid to know what to do—and the rest of this government is stacked with incompetents and other invalids. Meanwhile, there are reports that hundreds of thousands of people in Ashville, North Carolina, could be without access to water for weeks.
Yes, this is a campaign issue because we have an administration that can’t do disaster response.

Pray for North Carolina. This is absolutely devastating. pic.twitter.com/hqiJqozLUb— Libs of TikTok (@libsoftiktok) September 29, 2024
Does Biden even know there’s been a hurricane?
USA Today has more on the damage:
More than 2 million people remained without power late Sunday across the Southeast in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, including more than 430,000 in North Carolina, where the deadly storm pulverized homes, trapped residents, spawned landslides, and submerged communities under raging floodwaters. At least 90 people have died across multiple states since the record-breaking storm hit Florida's Big Bend as a Category 4 hurricane with 140-mph winds Thursday, before moving north through Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas and weakening to a post-tropical cyclone. The death toll is expected to rise. On Sunday, North Carolina officials were still trying to grasp the level of devastation. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said at a news conference that at least 11 people died in the devastated state, "and tragically we know there will be more." Buncombe County Manager Avril Pinder said more than 1,000 people were reported missing through the county’s online portal but added that she expected the number to drop dramatically when cell service is restored. Rescue crews are “still trying to save every single person we can” in the hard-hit community, Pinder said. Hundreds of roads were washed away, cellular service for over 250,000 people was cut off, and vast swaths of cities such as Asheville were left underwater. Cooper said Helene had become "one of the worst storms in modern history for parts of North Carolina."

So in case you haven't heard, Mod Bubbles of A Student Out of Time fame has lost power due to Helene deciding to do what hurricanes do best; ruin everything.
As someone who doesn't live in hurricane territory (And no Met Office, naming your storms does not count) I can't imagine how scary it must be. My father would tell me about the various typhoons he had to endure as a child when he was living in Hong Kong, and they sounded absolutely terrifying.
Which fun fact about tropical revolving storms (yes this is the actual terms for them) The name depends on the ocean the storm comes from. tropical revolving storms from the Atlantic are called hurricanes, those from the Indian Ocean are called cyclones and storms coming from the Pacific are called typhoons. They also sometimes have localised names. Australia has a very funny name I cannot say here due to it violating several Tumblr guidelines but let's just say its very on brand with Aussie humour.
Of course the high speed winds while damaging and can knock out power, which is what happened to Mod Bubbles, the real danger is the storm surges. This is what causes the most damage/deaths. I don't know where Mod Bubbles lives but I believe they said they are quite high up so they and their family should avoid the surges and just have to deal the winds.
Either way, thoughts are with Bubbles and their loved ones, and while of course when power gets restored we would be happy, I would be more concerned if anyone is hurt during it.
At the end of the day, nature still has a way of humbling us humans and if the global temperatures rise, the tropical revolving storms are only gonna get worse.
#a student out of time#review anon talks#hurricane helene#really the only storm that was noteworthy to me was storm euisune#and that is because not only did the uk go into red alert#but because it blew off the attic roof door#which I still wonder how tf it did that

Jamaica to Receive $16.3 Million for Hurricane Damage
The country is due to be awarded some $16.3 million from the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility after the passing of Hurricane Beryl. According to Minister of Finance Dr Nigel Clarke, it was in that context very important that the country secured a multi-layered disaster risk financing arrangement to support recovery. The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility will provide an approximate payout of $16.3 million to Jamaica. This is based on the fact that Hurricane Beryl has fulfilled all conditions of their parametric tropical cyclone insurance policy. This was affirmed by uien Clarke, Minister of Finance of Jamaica, who explained, "I have received the Preliminary Modelled Loss and Policy Payment Report from CCRIF for Tropical Cyclone Beryl." As far as Jamaica is concerned, the report stated that the country's insurance policy with CCRIF had been breached by the hurricane with parameters to trigger the payout sum of about $16.3 million or approximately J$2.5 billion. To this, Dr. Clarke added that the insurance policy with CCRIF is part of a multilayered framework for disaster risk financing in place for Jamaica. It has many benefits in the management and response to natural disasters within the country. In fact, the policy purchased from CCRIF reflects the fourth layer in such a system. Some utilisation of the CCRIF SPC parametric capacity was expected in the wake of Hurricane Beryl, which made landfall last week. This would be especially so for the Windward Islands in the Caribbean, which report severe impacts from the storm. Jamaica has also been among the entities expected to receive payouts. As readers may recall, there is a $150 million cat bond with IBRD. But it is understood this was not triggered following Hurricane Beryl's close passage to the island. Jamaica has a number of disaster risk contingent financing arrangements, some of which, as Dr. Clarke explained previously, were expected to release funds.Dr. Clarke himself has been very explicit in describing the country's disaster risk financing arrangements in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, especially referring to a layered approach where he has recognized at the topmost level that the catastrophe bond caters to extreme events, and the second layer represented by CCRIF SPC parametric insurance provides further protection. Yet another payout is to be made, clearly realizing the benefits that CCRIF SPC can bring forth with its parametric insurance coverage. It will help restore Jamaica from damages induced by Hurricane Beryl and act as a very good example of why countries need to have a fully packaged disaster risk financing system. The case of Jamaica serves as a very good example of how to manage disaster risk among countries prone to natural disasters. A number of insurance and financing options stacked together help take better care of the financial impacts caused by such events in Jamaica. This would ensure that, compared to others, its recovery would be quicker and with less economic disruption. Read the full article

After Heavy Damage In Tamil Nadu And Andhra, Cyclone Michaung Weakens
Cyclone Michaung made landfall yesterday following heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh and flooding in Chennai. The severe cyclonic storm that originated in the Bay of Bengal weakened into a depression, the India Meteorological Department said.
Chennai came to a standstill following heavy rain and flooding. Seventeen people died in the city due to rain-related incidents, making it one of the worst affected places due to the cyclone.
As many as ten incidents of drowning and electrocution have been reported and medical assistance has been provided, Greater Chennai Police said.
DMK MP Kanimozhi said the Tamil Nadu government is prepared to deal with the situation in a better manner than in 2015 when incessant rains caused flooding in Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the ₹ 4,000 crore investment in stormwater drains played a crucial role in minimizing the impact of what he called the “47-year high rainfall”.
Food and other relief materials are being airdropped in Chennai and water is being pumped out from several low-lying areas that are flooded, DR J Radhakrishnan, Commissioner of Greater Chennai Corporation said.
Additional teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been called in and 300 boats have been deployed in low-lying areas. Around 5,000 government workers from other districts will join the relief efforts, Dr J Radhakrishnan said.
The cyclone weakened into a depression and is moving northwards in Andhra Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department said.
It is expected to move northwards in Andhra Pradesh and further weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area in the next six hours.
Schools and colleges were ordered to remain shut today in Chennai and an 80 per cent power supply has been restored in the city. Many residents in the city grappled with power cuts and no mobile connectivity.
Traffic has been restored on several key roads including; Kamarajal Sarai, Cathedral, Pondy Bazaar, Dams, RK Salai and Anna Salai Road. The Greater Chennai police said water logging is being removed from roads and traffic is slow.

How does climate change impact coral reefs and their ecosystems
Climate change has emerged as a grave and imminent threat to coral reefs and their fragile ecosystems. The devastating impacts of rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, sea level rise, extreme weather events, and altered ocean circulation have collectively taken a toll on these vital marine habitats. Coral bleaching, in particular, has become a distressing consequence, leading to the widespread loss of vibrant and bio diverse coral colonies.
Climate change has significant and detrimental effects on coral reefs and their ecosystems. The main impacts are as follows:
Coral Bleaching: Rising sea temperatures lead to coral bleaching, a stress response where corals expel their symbiotic algae, turning them white. Without these algae, corals lose their main source of nutrition and become more susceptible to disease and mortality.
Ocean Acidification: Increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere result in higher CO2 concentrations in seawater. This leads to ocean acidification, which hampers coral growth and the ability of some marine organisms to form their calcium carbonate shells and skeletons.
Sea Level Rise: Global warming causes the melting of polar ice and glaciers, leading to rising sea levels. Higher sea levels can cause more frequent and severe coastal flooding, negatively impacting coral reef habitats and nearby coastal communities.
Extreme Weather Events: Climate change contributes to the intensification of tropical storms and cyclones. These events can physically damage coral reefs through wave action and sediment erosion.
Altered Ocean Circulation: Changes in ocean currents and temperature patterns can disrupt the natural distribution of nutrients, affecting the food availability for coral reef organisms.
Species Disruptions: Some species may shift their distribution or migrate to other areas due to changing environmental conditions, potentially disrupting the delicate balance of coral reef ecosystems.
Loss of Biodiversity: Coral reefs support a vast array of marine life. Climate change-induced impacts, such as coral bleaching and habitat degradation, lead to the loss of biodiversity within these ecosystems.
Loss of Coastal Protection: Healthy coral reefs act as natural barriers, protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges. As reefs degrade, coastal communities become more vulnerable to the impacts of climate-related events.
The combined effects of these climate change impacts pose a serious threat to the health and survival of coral reefs and the countless marine species that depend on them for food, shelter, and protection. Urgent and concerted efforts to mitigate climate change and promote coral reef conservation are essential to safeguard these valuable ecosystems for future generations.
In conclusion, the perilous consequences of climate change on coral reefs and their ecosystems are undeniable. Urgent action is imperative to curb greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to prevent further deterioration of these invaluable marine habitats. Conservation efforts must be intensified to promote the recovery and restoration of coral reefs, alongside a broader commitment to sustainable practices and resilient coastal management.
Nations and communities must collaborate on a global scale to protect and preserve coral reefs and the biodiversity they harbor. By fostering environmental consciousness, implementing adaptive strategies, and supporting scientific research, we can strive towards safeguarding these natural wonders for generations to come. The collective responsibility to combat climate change and preserve coral reefs stands as a testament to our commitment to preserving the remarkable beauty and ecological integrity of our planet’s oceans.
