OK so I've had some plans for my new year's resolutions this year and so far they are going well-ish. But I thought I would post some of my experiences here since I love reading about other people doing it!
This is mostly focused on goals to do with trying to get better from my serious depression, which has been haunting me since about summer 2022, when my childhood friend killed herself. Anyway um reminder not to do that. Your life touches so many people, you have no idea the number of people who love you and who would drop everything to help. Killing yourself may be easier than changing your life into one you want to live, but it is also much much worse.
In January I am doing yoga every day (following the YWA challenge, which I also did last year and continued on for several months after). So far, I haven't missed a day or even postponed a day. I can't promise that won't happen but so far so good! Honestly I'm a natural procrastinator, and at first the positions were just as hard and uncomfortable as they were when I first started, but now I massively look forward to it every day! I am extremely bad at doing it significantly before bed though, and I'm lucky that it doesn't seem to have affected my sleep goals much.
I'm also doing Dry January, which, ngl, is pretty easy for me. It's much harder for my partner, who enjoys alcohol a lot and has definite alcoholic tenancies. Dry January really tends to reset our drinking as a couple though, and get us to be more intentional with it for at least a few months afterwards. We're also going to do stoptober this year, and I think it will be great to have another "firebreak" in the year for drinking.
Me and my partner both got FitBits in November/December, and they have been really life changing in terms of the amount of exercise we do now, and our habits. My partner is also able to see the direct impact that drinking has on his health metrics (like HRV). I have learned that my HRV is absolute garbage, and idk why lol.
My final goal for January was to stick to a regular sleep schedule. This is going pretty well so far. For context, my usual sleep schedual was very unhelpful. I would go to bed at wildly varying times, same with waking up, I would sometimes only fall asleep at like 6am, I would sleep until 3pm regularly. It was miserable, and terrible for my mental health. I have only had two slip ups this month, one where I woke up at almost 1pm, and one where I went to sleep at around 2:50am or so (still so much better than before!!). Honestly this one has been the hardest, but having a fitbit to keep me accountable has really helped.
Another thing I have found extremely helpful this month is a supplement called L-glutamine. Because of my diet, my very very bad disordered diet, I basically get no nutrients anyway. I have tried taking supplements before, but they have never had this much of an impact! L-glutamine is just an amino acid which is fuel for your gut biome and helps you recover faster from exercise. It seems to have helped with so much more though! I am more awake, my hunger signals are more normal and less deathly painful, and my body feels much better able to cope with the increased exercise I'm getting (we moved house, so I am now either walking 40 mins or biking to work instead of the bus, so lots more exercise overall). Honestly couldn't reccomend enough. I would say if you get some though, get the powder version and not the capsules. In order to get an adequate dose per day, you need to take loads of capsules, around 15g of the powder. I mix the powder with fizzy drinks (I know) and just drink it. A little gritty at first, but I got used to it fast.

Another govt based initiative and policy is the Stoptober more likely inspired from inktober of drawing a little drawing on theme every day, maybe if we quit for a month for stoptober - maybe we do not get the urge to smoke again as life style definitely changes after quitting, yes initial days are a bit more tougher but with time I believe you get used to it.

Learn To Vape
Part 1. What is vaping? A newbies guide.
Stoptober Is the season for vaping so what better time to kick the habit than now? Vaping is a much healthier alternative to smoking. In fact Public health England stated it is 95% healthier! Starting from humble beginnings with the cig-a-likes you now see in petrol stations and a few years on it has become one of the fastest growing industries in the world with a huge community of vapers to back it up.
To newcomers the vaping world might be a bit intimidating but we all were in the same boat at one point in our vaping lives so don’t worry. To make thing’s easy here is our complete guide to the world of vaping.
How a vape works:
All vapes work under the same principal and are all made up of the same components and there is a bit of vaping Jargon involved but don’t worry everything is actually really straightforward
MOD: The vape mod of a vape set-up is the box that supplies power to your vape. They vary in all colours, shapes and sizes but all work in a similar way. Most mods will have a little LCD screen that show your battery life, resistance etc and let you change your power settings to suit how you vape. But there are lots of mods that are a lot simpler where all you have to do to vape is press a button. It’s the brains behind your vape gear
TANK :The vape tank is what hold’s your e-liquid and all the internals that create the vapour. All tanks also have airflow systems to allow vapour to travel from the tank into your lungs. There is a giant variety of tanks to choose from, for ex-smokers to the casual vaper, or the extreme enthusiast. There’s something for everyone. This part of your vape is the body that holds everything together
COIL: So if the Mod Is like the brain, and the tank is like the body; The coil is definitely the heart of your vape gear. A coil in its most basic form is a piece of wire that’s wrapped like a spring. wrapped around the wire is the wick, primarily made of organic cotton. Because cotton is quite dense but porous it’s the best material used to soak up your E-Liquid and make sure its touching the metal coil.
Now we know the different parts of a vape set up but how does it work?
It's actually quite simple. When you press the fire button on your mod, it puts a current through the coil and heats it up. The heat begins to makes the e-liquid that’s soaked into the cotton vaporise (hence the term vape). As air passes through your vape it goes through the coil and delivers your nicotine, flavour and healthier lifestyle to your lungs.
Vapes are so much healthier for you because there is no combustion used to produce the vapour meaning none of the 400 different toxins, 43 of which are carcinogenic, and the whooping 4000 different other harmful chemicals found if cigarettes. When it comes to vaping, you get better flavour, none of the nasty lingering smells and a much more healthy means of getting your nicotine fix.
From our standpoint It’s a no-brainer.

Week 9
Public health campaigns, Microcelebrity culture, Aesthetic labor, & Pornification.
Public health campaigns:
Public health campaigns are strategic efforts designed to enhance and advance public health outcomes through various initiatives. The primary purpose of these initiatives is to increase public knowledge and understanding of particular health concerns, while also promoting positive changes in behaviour that can enhance overall health and wellness (Linos & Hunt, 2022). Public health initiatives frequently employ diverse communication channels, such as social media, to expand their reach and foster community engagement. Campaigns of diverse nature can be undertaken to address a wide spectrum of issues, including but not limited to tobacco control, vaccination awareness, mental health, and sexual health (Linos & Hunt, 2022).
One instance of a public health initiative is the "Stoptober" campaign, which takes place annually in the United Kingdom and aims to motivate smokers to abstain from smoking for the duration of October (Johnson 2022). The campaign offers a range of resources, assistance, and knowledge to aid individuals in their smoking cessation efforts, while emphasising the advantages of adopting a smoke-free way of life.
Microcelebrity culture:
According to Mavroudis (2020), the concept of microcelebrity culture pertains to the occurrence wherein people attain a particular degree of prominence or acknowledgement by means of social media platforms. In contrast to conventional celebrities, microcelebrities tend to possess a relatively modest fan base, yet wield significant sway within their respective specialised circles. Individuals utilise social media platforms as a means to establish and sustain a personal brand, disseminating various facets of their lives, hobbies, and proficiencies to their audience. Microcelebrities frequently interact with their audience by means of consistent content generation, cooperative efforts, and individual engagements, thereby establishing a feeling of closeness and association with their supporters.
Individuals who have garnered a loyal audience on social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube by documenting their fitness progress, providing makeup guidance, or showcasing culinary skills can be classified as microcelebrities (Dennis 2023, pp. 53-54). The individuals in question have successfully developed a distinct and specialised group of viewers, and their influence on the inclinations and decisions of their supporters is noteworthy.
Aesthetic labor:
The term "aesthetic labour" pertains to the exertion and diligence that individuals invest in crafting their physical appearance, fashion, and general aesthetic in diverse social settings (Mears 2014). The process entails meticulous curation of one's physical presentation, encompassing attire, personal hygiene, and other related factors, to conform to prevailing societal conventions, expectations, or fashions. The performance of aesthetic labour can be impacted by the use of social media and the aspiration to present oneself in a visually pleasing or desirable manner, with the intention of acquiring acceptance or validation from one's peers.
According to Mears (2014), aesthetic labour can be observed in the actions of social media influencers who invest significant amounts of time and effort into refining their appearance, meticulously selecting stylish attire, and arranging visually captivating backdrops for their photographic or video content. Individuals allocate considerable time and exertion towards creating an aesthetically appealing visual representation with the aim of captivating their audience and sustaining their digital footprint.
Pornification:
The term "pornification" denotes the escalating impact of pornography and its associated visual representations on conventional societal norms, encompassing various domains such as mass communication, marketing, and online networking (Paasonen et. al 2007). The phenomenon entails the reduction of individuals to mere objects and their sexualization, frequently endorsing unattainable physical ideals, explicit material, and exaggeratedly sexualized depictions. The phenomenon of pornification has the potential to distort individuals' perceptions of beauty, sexuality, and body image, ultimately leading to negative impacts on their self-esteem and overall well-being.
The phenomenon of pornification in mainstream media can be observed through the utilisation of sexualized imagery and explicit content in advertising campaigns, as well as the depiction of women as objects of desire in popular music videos (Paasonen et. al 2007).
