The game has no short races as companions. If Larian added short companions, this guy would be my choice*. He's a nice, nerdy duergar and I want to talk with him about history and archeology (and also romance him) so badly.

By this point I had already defeated the duergars, killed Glut (Fuck Glut), and all that. Off to Grymforge we go!

Got any favorite Side Characters in BG3 yet? Since you’ve done multiple playthroughs, I assume you’ve made it decently far. I got super attached to Barcus to my surprise. Abdirak less surprised. Love a faithful freak. (Guess that’s why I love Barcus too).

Blurg and Omeluum will have my heart forever. I'm also particularly fond of Sovereign Spaw for some reason—maybe because it's so pretty.

I'd die for Mol, as well, and she would be the only beneficiary of my will. She's one in a million. I love her so much.

Barcus is an absolute delight. I wanna hang out with him and talk about explosives forever. I wish he stayed in my camp for longer, and I wish he had more dialogue while he was there. He's great.

The only time I've ever actually met Abadirk was in my Vanic run, and I felt robbed that I'd somehow missed him every other time. He's so fun!! Reminds me of all the characters I used to get crushes on as a teenager and still do on occasion

Special mentions to:

Stonemason Kith. He's so friendly??? All the other Duegar are such pricks, but Kith is so nice. He just wants to talk about rocks and I would happily sit down and listen to him for hours on end. He's a treasure.

Varsh Ko'kuu. He's trying his absolute best for that egg, and he has a very nice beard. I also like his boots.

Kar'niss. I wish I could give him a hug and a flower crown or something. He's such a sweetheart.

That one dragonborn shopkeep in Baldur's Gate who sells instruments. Alulin (my Dark Urge gnome bard) had a lovely chat with him about instruments and performing and they seemed like they got along so well. It was a lovely bright spot in the heaviness of Act 3.

Last time, we were in the depths of the Underdark, having just cleared the Arcane Tower. First, here are a couple of autistic wizards stimming with somatic components.

Onwards to Grymforge, then the last of the Risen Road!

Yeah that potion was nasty. Interesting note with the black veins around the eyes, similar to the Astral Tadpole effect!

Omeluum has unlocked: a headache. Pensive emoji. It's okay, friend, it was worth a try.

There wasn't an option to say, "No, it's alright, you need to keep your protection and we'll work out another way", but tbh this is still a pretty... Gale option anyway.

This was neat, hadn't passed this check before! Faerzress is what sussur trees naturally feed on! I figure Gale would be familiar with it, at least in theory.

Peace-Bringer for dealing with the duergar, Kin Spirit for dealing with Glut!

Into the darkness! I hc that Gale is at least passingly familiar with boats, he does live in the coastal part of Waterdeep.

I hope Stonemason Kith gets out. Dude just wants to study. And he gave us infernal iron!

I have a screencap limit so I won't post the caps, but I like this exchange between Karlach and Gale, immediately following: "Never was much for history class, but this place has me captivated." "It would have been quite something in its heyday. But even now, it has much to teach us." I just dig the idea of Gale helping encourage Karlach's nascent fascination for history! Maybe that's how he gets the idea to teach?

I hope the rothes get out safely too. Good moos. Helped out the two being abused, as well, and helped free Skickpit by poisoning the two slavers. Said a brief word for the murdered gnomes (it's okay, we left Astarion at camp), then went to deal with Nere.

Interestingly, talking to Barcus switched to Shadowheart. Good thing, too, because she had the Baldurian tag and could get some extra info that Gale wouldn't have!

Poor Lae'zel looks pretty beaten up! Still, no glitching this time, we got Barcus at camp :)

Moon lantern: broken. Nere's head: in inventory, so no awkward hacking off XD Gale recognises the masks, too, with a successful Arcana check: "Interesting mask. I quite like the design. It belonged to a merregon. Infernal soldiers."

I hc he eventually gets with Zanner Toobin, who helps him get over his lingering feelings for Wulbren by being a partner who genuinely cares about him instead of being dismissive and entitled like Wulbren.

Anyway.

Gale's comment on the Dark Justiciar crossbow: "This crossbow was exquisitely designed. No duergar crafted this... its dark grace is most definitely Sharran in origin." And his comments on the dining hall: "An eerily chilling scene, this. I suspect many were present at this blighted Nightfall feast." He has some interesting thoughts on Sharran stuff!

Pop back to Ebonlake to deliver Nere's head, get dubbed Life-Chanter as well as Peace-Bringer and Kin Spirit, and get a mushroom rave!

Back to Grymforge to give it a proper explore!

Back to the village to make Astarion a shiny new knife, then headed north! For some reason, the gnolls aggroed as soon as we got close, so couldn't do the persuasion thing for some extra Astarion approval, alas. Either way, we saved Rugan and got invited over to his place. Over to Waukeen's Rest!

Gale was still upstairs after rescuing the other dude, so the part of the PC will be played by Astarion here. Who got some extra stuff from being Baldurian, too!

Always thought this exchange was interesting. I wonder what, exactly, Ulder told her? As far as he believes, he disowned Wyll because Wyll had pacted with a devil (which... is true, he just doesn't know why, thanks to Mizora). What did he tell Florrick, then, for her both to be sympathetic towards Wyll and to understand that he'd be angry at Ulder? If Ulder had just explained it to her as, "I forced Wyll out because he was getting into infernal worship" or something, I can't actually see her being sympathetic towards Wyll when they do meet, seven years later, with Wyll visibly now a devil.

I don't know. Maybe she did her own research? Connected 'the Blade of Frontiers' with 'Wyll Ravengard' and realised that everything he had been doing was heroic, even if he was doing it with infernal warlock powers?

I adore her.

Met with the Zhentarim. Got our reward for saving Rugan. Went shopping. Killed everyone. Let Oskar go free. Looted everything not nailed down :D

A sweet comment from Astarion, clicking one of the spheres: "Not just a world to explore, but an entire cosmos..." There's almost this awe in his voice that I love. I think he genuinely would enjoy being an explorer - he's over two hundred years old, but all of that time has been in Baldur's Gate in absolute misery. There's so much still to see out there!

Well, there's at least one halfway-decent seeming duergar down here.

This guy's a stonemason named Kith who is doing a sort of archaeological investigation of some of the ruins of the Shar temple. He gave Hector a surprisingly friendly welcome, which Hector commented on, and he described himself as having "no skill for slaving - I prefer chisel to cane."

This wins you points only because the bar is atrociously low, Kith - you're still down here WITH the slavers. However - I mostly mention this because he asked Hector for his opinion on the stuff he was listening to and Hector knocked his history check out of the park and got to nerd out a little bit, which was nice for him.

Another day another slay! Posting this late, and with Tumblr fucking me over :)

Started off today by heading to Grymforge! We pushed a Duegar off a boat (admittedly for my own personal enjoyment + extra XP, Soph would never) and sailed into the old fortress.

Sophronius was very unhappy about the fact they kept slaves and the attitudes of the Duegar they met first. So, they're not in the picture anymore. He was also not at all thrilled when he saw a massive amount of bodies piled up and the Duegar pushing them into the water. He dealt with them and proceeded to remove the bodies and give them a proper sort of shrine to remember them. It doesn't look that great I worked with what I had lmao

Talked to Stonemason Kith, have I said I love Stonemason Kith?

We got the Adamantine Forge working and killed the guardian in only a few turns using the crucible! We made the Adamantine Splint Armor for Lae'zel and the Shield for Shadowheart. With Sophronius wearing the helmet from the Guardian, those three cannot be crit'd against!! The dice hate me so this is great news.

We also walked by the Lava Elemental and it was surprisingly chill? Bro had no issue despite totally seeing us. Anyways we grabbed the Adamantine Chest and sent it to camp for Astarion to unlock later (he's been in camp all of Grymforge, you know why). In the box was the Amulet with the giggly monk and now Soph is wearing it

We teamed up with the rebels to kill Nere and of course Tactician has to make the Scrying Eye basically immune to every single damage type except thunder so that was a HUGE pain. Ended up luring the eye to the right where that chasm is and throwing it off. Some guy got mad but he didn't move or attack, he didn't take his turn at all and spent a minute doing nothing until he was dead.

I love Soph so much, these options fuck hard.

Anyways the bug where none of the enemies move or take actions happened in this fight too with some of the allied Duegar also feeling the glitch- it was annoying, boring, and long because it took a minute for each enemy's turn to be forcefully stopped. We didn't lose any health though I guess.

The gnomes were free!!! Soph demanded Brithvar let them go, and after watching him turn Nere into a was he got the idea. Took Nere's head and went back to the Myconid colony, where we delivered it to Spaw. Then we went back to Grymforge and up the elevator, into Act 2.

Traveling through the topside of the Sharran temple, one of the Moonrise Towers we got to the Shadowcursed lands. Immediately Shadowheart was like "OMG the curse doesn't affect me!!! Shar loves me!!!" I know it's not because she had the Blood of Lathander but I like to imagine she thinks it's Shar and it's literally just cuz she has a light source. from, you know, the morninglord.

Anyways we help the Harper's fight off the shadows and I was sad because Yonas purty but now Yonas dead :( After heading to Last Light we talk to Jaheira, she does her whole vine bit, and Mol comes to our rescue. We have a glass of wine w her and detect the truth shit but drink it anyways. Soph doesn't have anything to hide.

We talked to Isobel, got the blessing, and helped fend off the Winged Horrors and I don't think there were any casualties, and Isobel was alright. We also got Karlach's engine 'fixed', enough so I could give her a big ol' hug.

I took a few long rests in quick succession in the hopes of getting my scene with Wyll but no fucking Durge and Dream Visitor shit is overriding it. Also got one of Gale's scenes.

The dream visitor said some shit I don't remember, but the butler guy showed up and was like you gotta kill Isobel and I'm not doing that so. Fuck off. Then that's where I left off.

A few notes about Soph being a Durge by the way: Since Soph is an OC the Durge storyline isn't totally 1:1. This run is supposed to be an AU basically, but basically his real story is basically "has been mind controlled by an evil cultist to kill hundreds of people." The parallels of killing in his sleep are the main reason I made him Durge. Also I needed to do a durge run. Another idea I had was if the Urge made me break my oath I would essentially switch over to doing an evil run? Where I'd give into the urges, because of a few lore reasons. When Soph gets mind controlled it leaves a sort of remnant of the magic in his head and it also turns his eyes all black and spooky and he's very easy to manipulate after that especially.
