What Are Original Gemstones?
Original gemstones are naturally occurring minerals that have not been treated or enhanced in any way. They are formed deep within the Earth’s crust over millions of years, making each stone unique in its properties and appearance. Unlike synthetic or lab-created stones, original gemstones carry the natural energy and beauty that only Mother Earth can bestow.
The Importance of Authenticity:
Purchasing an original gemstone means investing in a piece of nature that holds genuine metaphysical properties. Fake or synthetic stones, on the other hand, lack the authenticity and energy that make original gemstones so powerful. At Rakshatra Gems, we ensure that each stone in our collection is 100% natural, certified, and of the highest quality.
Types of Gemstones Available at Rakshatra Gems:-
India has a rich tradition of valuing gemstones for their beauty and spiritual significance. At Rakshatra Gems, we offer a wide variety of types of gemstones, each with its own unique characteristics and benefits.
Blue Sapphire (Neelam):

At Rakshatra Gems, we ensure that our Blue Sapphires are sourced from reputable mines and are 100% original.
Emerald (Panna):
Emeralds are cherished for their vibrant green color and are associated with the planet Mercury. Wearing an original Emerald is believed to enhance intellectual capabilities and bring clarity of thought. We offer a wide range of original Emerald stones that are certified for their quality and authenticity.
Ruby (Manik):
Rubies, or Manik stones, are symbols of passion and energy. An original Ruby is believed to bring confidence, vitality, and good fortune. At Rakshatra Gems, our Rubies are carefully selected to ensure they meet the highest standards of quality.
Pearl (Moti):
Pearls, or Moti, are associated with peace, purity, and emotional balance. Natural Pearls are rare and highly valued, and our collection at Rakshatra Gems offers some of the finest original Pearls available in Bhopal.

Ahh no smut this time, but I wanted to write more, I think I want to pump out some drabbles to get my creative juices flowing for November.
Anyway this is about a girl who gets a few priceless gifts from a dragon! The part about the mother’s ring is actually based on my mom’s engagement ring. My dad designed it himself to make it look like a flower as a diamond and synthetic alexandrite as petals. It’s hands down the most beautiful engagement ring I’ve ever seen.
“What is that?” You asked aloud. There was a present sitting on your office desk and it wasn’t your birthday. Christmas was only a few weeks away, but you didn’t put your name in for your floor’s Secret Santa. It reminded you of one of those large Ferrero Roche candies you got on sale after Valentines Day. It had taken you a month to eat it all. The present was wrapped in pale pink, tied at the top with a sheer pink bow.
“Looks like a gift.” Donny said without looking up from his cubicle.
“Open it, open it!” Cassie said excitedly, leaning on her chair. You stifled a sigh, it was too early for this. You set your bag down on the floor and fingered the bow. Fuck it. You thought and pulled the ribbon apart. The wrapping was gathered to stay in the bow and once you removed it, the paper split, revealing the item inside.
“Is that a paperweight?” You mused. It looked almost comical. It was a large gem, a bright reddish purple cut into what looked like a giant cushion. You had to admit, it was pretty and you attempted to lift it up but was surprised at how heavy it was. You expected a paperweight to have some heft to it, but not this much.
“Aw what a disappointment.” Cassie grumbled, going back to work. You frowned and blushed. You weren’t enemies but you didn’t really get along with your coworkers. They were polite, asking you how your day was and drinking with you at office parties but that was it. You had been at the company for several years, and still it felt like you had just transferred. Sighing, you slipped the wrapping paper from under the fake gem and tossed it into the garbage, sliding the gift into your bag with a thunk and sat down to work.
You promptly forgot about it until you were ready to leave. You lugged the bag over your shoulder and headed home, grumbling. You were too embarrassed by your coworkers reaction to even wonder who would give you such a thing. It had to be someone in the office; you worked in a place that managed a very wealthy dragon’s money. No way could someone come in to just drop off a gift. The security didn’t even let significant others up to drop off their loved ones lunches, not to mention if anyone was stupid enough to steal from a dragon.
You decided it was a prank.
You decided to pull the gem out, to see if you could find anything on it. When you did, you nearly dropped it again. The gem was now a bright green, gleaming in the dwindling sun. You immediately thought to your mother’s engagement ring. In the center was a diamond and flanked were two oblong synthetic alexandrites. You remember always loving the way it would change colors and constantly steal it to put it in the sun before bringing it back inside.
Someone had given you a very convincing looking alexandrite giant gem. You had no idea if it was real or not, but you didn’t want to find out. If anyone saw you with this big of a gem, they’d either think you stole it, or got it illegally. You shoved it back inside your bag and hugged your coat tighter around you, stalking back to your apartment to sleep it off.
The paperweight had found a spot on your windowsill, next to your ivy. Even if it was fake, you still loved how the colors changed from day to night. Damn, whoever had gotten you this was good. Pretty soon, however, it became apart of the décor and you lost interest in finding out who gave it to you. No card and no further interaction or gifts, so you figured it was a one time deal.
That was until there was a small plain box on your desk waiting for you one morning. You had decided to come in early, this weekend was the company Christmas party, and you didn’t want to have to work overtime and have it cut into your prep time. The office was nearly empty, save for a few of the older early birds but you figured that they didn’t have anything to do with it. Before you changed your mind, you opened the box and found a thick cardstock folded neatly on top.
Curious, you lifted it up and underneath were a set of teardrop earrings and a simple pendant necklace. The gems were a dark blue and purple, rather than your large gem coloring. The chain and hooks were a beautiful rose gold. Gorgeous, you thought, turning your attention back to the card in your hands.
Y/N,
I apologize for the random gifts, but I believe you would have a deeper appreciation for them than the average person. Please accept this gift.
Not even a signature. You would have been positive that this gift was placed in the wrong cubicle if it wasn’t directly addressed to you. The set was the most expensive things you could ever dream of owning. But, you weren’t sure what to do. So you didn’t do anything. You gingerly placed the card back into the box and left it on your desk and began to work.
You weren’t sure why, but you slipped it quietly into your purse when more coworkers arrived. You had no idea what type of gemstone it was, but it was beautiful and you couldn’t help but want to try it on to see what it looked on you.
By the end of the day, you had finished all of your bookkeeping and whisked yourself back to your apartment to get ready. This year the party was held in a grand ballroom in the heart of the city. According to office gossip, the company was going all out this year and pulling no punches.
So you decided you weren’t going to either. Work was business attire, and you hated the boring colors you had to wear all the time. So you chose a flirty, light royal purple dress, even though it was more on the expensive side. You took your time getting ready, making sure your makeup was flawless and your hair silky smooth. You were in the midst of putting a plain set of pearls around your neck when you glanced at your bag next to your vanity. You bit your lip, glad your red matte lipstick had set and wouldn’t smudge. Almost unconsciously you walked over and pulled out the box, opening it and pulling out the simple yet elegant jewelry. You decided it was a perfect match for your outfit.
What a coincidence.
Feeling ready, you grabbed your small clutch and checked the bands of your heels one last time before heading out.
--
The ballroom was beautiful. The music was noticeable but not obnoxiously loud and rather than corny Christmas songs the whole time it switched to more upbeat tunes. People were laughing and dancing, drinking and eating. It was a very nice atmosphere. But you were a bit overwhelmed. You had found your coworkers pretty easily and they had pulled you into their fold for dinner and easy chatting. It did take a toll on you and you found yourself sitting down at the bar, sipping on Champaign and allowing yourself to recharge.
“Tanzanite right?” You jumped, your head whipping around towards the voice that sounded very close. A dragon stared at you, smiling softly and pointed to your earrings. You recognized him as a business partner of the owner of the company. His scales gleamed gold in the light. “It’s not every day you see such a pure form of tanzanite on such a lovely lady.”
“O-oh, well I wasn’t really sure,” you found yourself admitting, giving him a nervous smile. “It was a gift.” He nodded and made himself comfortable on the barstool next to you. Despite their humanoid figure, dragons were still huge. He had to be at least 8 feet tall, and that wasn’t including the curled horns on his head. His large tail swished behind him, nearly touching the floor even though he was sitting.
“Well, whoever gave it to you must really love you.” You choked on your drink, sputtering. You coughed, trying to get your breath back and your cheeks burned in embarrassment. “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine,” you croaked, sounding the opposite of your words, with a wave of your hand. After clearing your throat one last time, you spoke again. “It was actually from someone I...don’t know.” You found yourself playing with the pendant, looking down at the sparkling jewel. “I have no idea who gave it to me. It wasn’t the first gift. I received something a few weeks earlier and I thought it was a joke.”
“Why?” The dragon asked with a tilt of his head.
“Well, it’s like a giant gem...thing. I thought it was paperweight made to look like a gem. But since receiving this,” you gestured towards your jewelry, “I’m not so sure it’s fake.” You weren’t sure why you were telling him all this. Maybe you wanted to get everything out. You glanced up at him, and you found yourself a little more at ease at his calm and yet open expression. “To be frank it’s pretty flattering, but I can’t help but think it was meant for someone else. I mean, I guess I wanted to wear this at least once before I had to give it to the actual person it was meant for.” You said with a shaky laugh. He didn’t laugh with you.
“Do you know anything about those gems?” The dragon said after a while, a strange look in his red eyes. You gave him a curious look and shook your head. “Tanzanite is found in only one spot in the whole world and extremely difficult to find the quality you have. And Alexandrite, mined and polished into a large size, is incredibly rare. Most stones of it that you see nowadays are synthetically made in a lab.” He reached a claw out and brushed it against one of the earrings, ghosting along your skin. “Any dragon would be able to tell these are genuine, carefully crafted and pure.” He was looking straight at you as he said this, and you felt the heat return at his intense gaze.
“I-I had no idea.” You mumbled, looking down at your hands. Now you felt like a thief. You felt a slight prick and your chin was pulled up until your eyes locked back with the dragons.
“Whoever gave you these knew how much Tanzanite and Alexandrite are worth; there is no way they wouldn’t make sure it was given to the right person.” The words soothed you and you smiled. But then his words registered in your head.
“I...never said what type of gem my first gift was.” You said slowly, your eyes squinting at him. His red eyes widened and he pulled back sharply, stuttering. “It was you, wasn’t it.” It wasn’t a question; even if it was the sheepish smile he gave you confirmed it.
“Ah well...” The dragon actually looked bashful as he rubbed the back of his neck. “Did you like them at least?”
“Of course!” You said a little too quickly and he glanced back up at you. He smiled, showing you his sharp teeth. “But, I don’t think we’ve ever said more than a few words to each other.”
“Correct,” he asserted, turning his large body back towards you and resting an arm on the bar counter. He watched as his hand gently caressed yours, his claws scraping the skin ever so gently. “I had seen you before, and thought you were beautiful. But I guess what started it was when you were in the elevator helping that boy pick out an engagement ring for his girlfriend.”
You started. That was at least six months ago! You had stepped into the elevator one evening to head home after a long day at work and stood between a few men already inside. One was a frantic looking man who was flipping through a ring catalog, an expression of panic clouding over his features. You felt bad, so you had asked if he found any that he liked. The man almost jumped a foot in the air but once he regained himself he had shaken his head, looking frantic. To help, you just started pointing out rings that you thought were pretty and speaking about the rings your mother and some friends had.
“It was the description of your mother’s ring that caught my attention.” The dragon said, smiling. “I thought that someone who could speak so fondly of a treasure that wasn’t even their own was a treasure themselves. I apologize if it seems forward, I can see how this all can come off as.” You found yourself shrugging, giving him a shy smile.
“Well, introducing yourself would have helped.” You teased and the dragon felt a weight lifted off his heart. After that, conversation seemed to come easy. You and him spoke for hours, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. The party came to an end all too quickly in your opinion and you found yourself being escorted by the large dragon back to your home.
He grumbled when you tried to unsuccessfully stifle your laughter at the sight of him struggling to get his big body out of the small cab. When he finally extradited himself, he glowered at you but that only made you fall into a fit of giggles.
“Would you like to come in for a bit? So you don’t have to get back in another tiny cab?” He smirked.
“I would love to.” He followed you quietly, ducking his head so his horns didn’t knock against the front door frame. Good thing your complex liked tall ceilings.
Inside you offered him tea and when you came out of the kitchen you noticed him standing by the window, looking down at the large gem.
“I thought it was the best place for it.” You said, sitting down on your couch and taking off your heels with a contented sigh. “I can see all of the colors that way.”
“Of course.” He sat down next to you and his weigh caused your body to tilt closer to him. The alcohol and the easy going atmosphere of the part wore off since you got back and you suddenly felt nervousness creep back. It was like you were back in high school with your first date. “I should do that with my gems.”
“Were these a part of your hoard or...?” You trailed off. What was the etiquette for talking about a dragon’s hoard? Was it private? You knew from your own boss that dragons took their hoard very seriously. Maybe you shouldn’t have asked.
“Of course.” He said again, as if it was the most obvious thing. “I chose my best ones, which took quite a while.”
“Why?” His head tilted at your question. “Why me, I mean? Why...give me these, from your own hoard no less?”
“Someone as lovely as you should always have treasures.”
“Do you want to add me to your hoard?” You joked, chuckling slightly to hide your nerves. No one had called you lovely before. Your kettle began to whine and you quickly rose to take it off the heat and into the mugs you set out. You jumped slightly when two massive arms wrapped themselves around you, claws slightly digging into the fabric of your dress.
“You’re worth more than all of the gems and gold in my hoard.” He said quietly, blowing warm air out of his nose and ruffling your hair. “It is terrible to think that they’re even on the same level as you.” He held you tightly, but it wasn’t stifling. You sighed, relaxing in his grip and leaning back into his chest. To be honest, you wouldn’t be offended if he had wanted to add you to his collection, if this was how he treated them.
“You sure know how to make a girl feel special.” You pat his clawed hand, rubbing your fingers against his golden scales. Heat seeped through your back into your bones, his body like a warm furnace and you hummed in content. You felt him move and press a warm, lingering kiss to your cheek.
“Am I being to forward?” He asked timidly, kissing your temple.
“No knight is going to come running out.” You both shared a quiet chuckle. You turned your head to return the kisses, this time gently placing your lips over his own. “I don’t think I would mind being your treasure.”

“If I were to recall, it would have been back as a child, around my… 15th or 16th cycle.” Luma thought, scribbling into the journal near his bed as he contemplated the beginnings along with the important bits of his life. “I hadn’t recalled their names for the longest time… after that incident, I tried to forget. To no use– no avail, as the memories come and go in quick bursts that brought the brunt of my migraines. Now, all has subsided but there is still more to be discovered of that past.” His quill raised from the paper for sometime, shaking his head as he was getting off track. “The calamity, destruction and mayhem. Most were not spared, some made it out damaged, scarred, or both. For myself, for the little hyur, it was tough. A fire spread, destroying my home and consuming the loving and lively essence of my mother. It wouldn’t have been until recently that I remembered her name, Margaret. She was a kind soul, and made the best darn sweet rolls that mine could never compare to… but when I think of her, I think of what I lost.” The quill fell onto the paper for a moment as he stood up, wanting to walk away and rid himself of having to think of the past, yet his feet wouldn’t budge. Tears in his eyes, he brought the quill to the pages once more after a rough dab into the bottle of ink. “The sound of her voice still echoes in my ears at night, the faint calling of my name and begging pleas to run– to escape, to flee. My father was nowhere in sight, fleeing the scene in fear as a coward at the time. Hibald Lee, former soldier and tactician… now back from the dead, or from hiding, after meeting up with him within Ishgard and an ungrateful meeting with books and dates. The life of Luma Lee has reached its prime, but more of these logs will come… and more stories would be told.” He finished writing for the time, some droplets hitting the pages of the journal as he slowly and reluctantly closed the book on the quill, sighing some. Another tale, for another time.- Luma Lee

The Fabric of Nigerian Weddings
Dola Fatunbi Olutoye, 25, was ecstatic after becoming engaged last November to Dr. Yinka Olutoye, 26. She knew she wanted a traditional Nigerian wedding, but needed help executing the cultural elements of the ceremony, which took place on May 25 in Houston.
Mrs. Olutoye, a pharmacy student from Houston, and Dr. Olutoye, a recent medical school graduate, are both Nigerian-Americans who are part of the Yoruba ethnic group, which is heavily concentrated in the Southwest region of Nigeria.
On the top of her to-do list, after graduating from pharmacy school and starting a residency program, was to shop for traditional fabrics, which have become emblematic of Nigerian weddings today.
“Nigerian weddings are full of color, vibrant, and are flashy,” said Mrs. Olutoye, who has attended many traditional Nigerian weddings in her hometown. “Without your fabrics, you’re not having a traditional Nigerian wedding.”
In Houston and throughout other Nigerian enclaves, like Atlanta, New York and Baltimore, Nigerian wedding ceremonies are especially opulent. Guest lists can number in the hundreds — a cultural holdover from Nigeria, where significant life events were typically community gatherings open to close relatives and loose acquaintances. With such a big audience, a bride aims to impart regality, vibrancy and thoughtfulness in each of her bridal looks.
With the help of her mother, Modupe Fatunbi, who had connections to a fabric distributor in Asia, Mrs. Olatoye picked out the colorful, patterned yards of lace and silk for each of her ensembles. They featured: a champagne and rose gold-color set, heavily beaded with pearls and embroidered flowers for her Yoruba traditional wedding (also known as the engagement ceremony); a royal blue dress with a detachable skirt for her western wedding, which included a conventional white gown; and various fabrics for three thanksgivings after the wedding, when the couple receives well-wishes and blessings from friends and family.
To streamline the process, Mrs. Olutoye enlisted the assistance of Doyin Fashakin, the owner of Doyin Fash Events, a luxury bridal consultancy and events company in Houston. Mrs. Fashakin, also of Nigerian heritage, knew the subtle fashion elements necessary for an authentic cultural wedding, and wears many informal hats during the wedding preparation process — family therapist, budget enforcer and fashion consultant for anxious clients.
“When you’re picking out your outfits, it’s very important that you select something unique and colorful but also of quality,” said Mrs. Fashakin, who along with overseeing the more logistical aspects of planning a wedding, also helps brides source fabrics and accessories for their ensembles from vendors in Nigeria, Switzerland, Dubai and Australia.
What makes a good fabric? “No synthetic fibers or blends; the material should be 100 percent lace or silk,” Mrs. Fashakin said. “The material also shouldn’t bunch or fade. There shouldn’t be loose threads and it should always feel good against your skin.”
Chioma Nwogu-Johnson of Dure Events, a wedding and events company in Houston, said that while planning a wedding in Houston is more cost-effective than in New York, the brides who procure her services still spend from $100,000 to $300,000 or more to host their nuptials. A sizable budget — sometimes $10,000 or more — is usually allocated to wedding fashions. Couples also absorb the cost to outfit large bridal parties and select attendees in aso ebi (translating to “family clothes,” or a uniform dress worn by friends of the couple as a show of solidarity). Some brides opt to send their raw fabrics to trusted tailors in Nigeria, where the craft work is less expensive.
“Nigerian brides spend months searching for their wedding fabrics looking for something distinct — something that no one else will have — and that can sometimes be a tedious and frustrating process for brides,” said Ms. Nwogu-Johnson, whose clients often include affluent professionals, like medical doctors, engineers and oil contractors. “They want to make sure that no other brides are wearing their fabrics. More than anything, they want to make sure they stand out.”
Social media can provide some inspiration for brides. The hashtag #nigerianwedding on Instagram touts more than 3 million posts, showing brides in all manner of colors, fabrics and bridal party size.
The style of dress at Nigerian occasions will vary, depending on the tribe of the celebrants. For instance, brides from the Igbo people, another major ethnic group concentrated primarily in south-central and southeastern Nigeria, adorn themselves with coral beads signifying royalty, and at times use George fabric, a heavily embroidered material from India.
Material made of lace is also popular for many Nigerian brides across tribes, as are other textiles like silk and tulle, embellished with hand-stitched beads, stones and pearls tailored painstakingly to a bride’s taste.
Many brides spare no expense in making what the Yoruba people call their aso oke or top clothes, made of a matching buba blouse and iro, a swath of fabric wrapped around the waist. A heavy sash of complementary fabric, called an iborun, is draped on one shoulder. The bride’s ensemble is matched to her husband’s tunic and pants set, along with his agbada draping and fila hat.
But perhaps the most important part of any Nigerian bride’s look is her gele, a scarf or fabric folded into an ornate shape atop a woman’s head. The gele is standard in African women’s wear, although called by different names throughout the continent. A bride’s look is incomplete without it.
Tying gele requires artistry, nimble fingers and a touch of originality; no two geles are tied the same. “A well-tied gele at a wedding is what an ascot is at the Kentucky Derby,” said Hakeem Oluwasegun Olaleye, a bridal stylist based in Houston who is known within the bridal circuit as Segun Gele. Named for his skill in fashioning the head scarves, Mr. Olaleye is commissioned to wrap geles around the heads of brides and female attendees at weddings around the world.
“Geles are art — it is your crowning glory,” Mr. Olaleye said. “It’s as important as your hair. You can wear a cheap dress and have your head wrap beautifully done and no one will notice your outfit. Your gele is the focal point.”
When Charlye Nichols Egbo, 31, a luxury property manager in Houston, married her husband Stanley Egbo, 38, who works in oil and gas logistics, in March, she employed five distinct dress changes for her traditional engagement and western wedding, sourcing materials from Nigeria and Turkey. With nods to her husband’s Igbo culture — Mrs. Egbo, who is African-American — solicited help from Ms. Nwogu-Johnson and Mr. Egbo’s three sisters to pull each of her distinct bridal looks together. One of her looks was a heavily beaded navy and gold embroidered ensemble with an embellished floral sleeve made from fabric bought in Dubai. Another outfit — a sparkling, two-tone red set number with coral neckwear — was complemented by a fuchsia-laden aso ebi party of 27 and a custom-made white gown by Esé Azénabor, a Nigerian atelier.
“Every suit maker, every dressmaker we used was Nigerian, Mrs. Egbo said. “I could have bought a gown from Vera Wang, but it was important to us to maintain authenticity, which made everything that more intimate and that more special.”

Choosing The Ideal Gemstone for Custom Jewelry
https://authoritypresswire.com/?p=24386&wpwautoposter=1544601728 Formed by the accumulation of minerals in the Earth, crystals have very distinctappearances and attributes given to them. Choosing a gemstone or natural stonefor use in jewelry can be greatly personalized by choosing a stone that appealsnot just to the recipient or visually but also based on the intention and purpose agem has traditionally been used for. Choosing on color is important. Color has a profound effect on the brain, influencing our internal neurochemistry through the interaction of lightfrequencies in our eyes and our perception of the color spectrum. Therethousands of types of gemstones and crystals (semi-precious gemstones)crystals found on earth, each having their own meaning. When designing custom jewelry, the metal matters as much as the stone that willbe used in it. Some stones are higher of the Mohs Scale that measures thehardness of a gem and are more suitable than others, while others are chosenfor their delicate iridescence and require special care, like opals. Purchase onlyfrom a reputable seller as well to avoid lab-grown or modified stones that aremade to appear as a different gemstone. Quality counts. Choosing a stone with meaning and purpose is essential to creating a piece ofcustom jewelry that has deep sentimental value. There are many other stonesbeyond the precious gems that are normally used in custom jewelry. Diamonds,Emerald and Rubies are not the only beautiful gems that can be considered. The Symbolism of Gemstones Abalone- Mother of PearlThe nacreous iridescence of the abalone shell is a common and very affordablejewelry material. Mother of Pearl/Abalone is considered to be a material thatgives protective and soothing healing energy. Abalone is associated with shieldsand positive emotions of peacefulness, beauty, compassion, and love. CertainNative American tribes use it abalone shell and sage in their spiritual practices tocarry messages to their Divinities. AmazoniteGreen and lush looking as a rainforest, the Amazonite is considered a stone thatabsorbs negativity and encourages the release of past trauma and hurt. It isclaimed to encourage creativity and self-expression by enhancing the ability tocommunicate. It is a stone that also comes in a wide range of greens and canhave beautiful variations in a single stone.  ApatiteThe deep blue and blue-green and white veins of the apatite are a perfect stoneto use for someone whom you are choosing a stone for who is a creative type. This is a stone associated with enthusiasm, creativity, and passion. Apatite is asofter stone and fractures easily so it not hardy but is a relaxing calming colorand very vivid. Cool tones can be stimulating. AquamarineAquamarine is a semi-precious gem named for its resemblance to seawater.Aquamarine is a blue-green translucent beryl. It is a gem relative of the emeraldand ruby.  It is a perfect stone to choose for a Pisces or jewelry that is for aperson with a water astrology sign. It also makes a lovely gift for your favoriteswimmer or scuba diver. Aquamarine has the metaphysical properties ofrenewal, relaxation and cleansing a person from negativity. It is said to protectthe mind. BloodstoneHeliotrope, also known as bloodstone, is a variety of jasper or chalcedony. The"classic" Bloodstone is green Heliotrope is sometimes used in carved signet ringsand is the traditional birthstone for March. It is associated historically with magicand invisibility and is even the subject of a famous play by Boccaccio. It is oftenused in jewelry that is considered protective, shielding and denotes the attributesof passion, strength, and bravery. AgateThe Agate comes in nearly every color and can be chosen for its color alone. It isa popular and common stone for jewelry. It has variations and patterns that formin the stone during formation and the inclusion of other minerals so it can be abeautifully speckled, lined, striped or solid stone. It is considered to be a greatgem for grounding and focus. AmethystAmethyst is a purple form of quartz that has always been used in jewelry. It’ssoothing colors make it one of the most popular gemstones in custom jewelry. Ithas always been considered a stone of strength and self-discipline in history. It issupposed to increase intuition and to prevent nightmares even. It is a hardersemiprecious gem and can be carved and faceted. CitrineCitrine is a variety of quartz whose color ranges from a pale yellow to goldenbrown due to iron. Natural citrines are incredibly rare. Most commercial citrinesare heat-treated amethysts or smoky quartzes.  A treated amethyst will havesmall lines in the crystal, as opposed to a natural citrine's clouded appearance. Itis nearly impossible to differentiate between cut citrine and yellow topaz visually. The name comes from the Latin word "citrina", which means "yellow" and is also the origin of the word "citron". Citrine and amethyst can be found together in the same crystal, forming orange and purple stones called ametrine. Ametrine isconsidered more exotic and is rare. Citrine has long been associated with bringing prosperity to the wearer and is a fine stone choice for those in finance. It is more modernly associated with confidence, power, and endurance. The sunny-hued citrine is a great idea for a businessman or businesswoman’s gift. GarnetGarnet species are found in many colors including red, orange, yellow, green, purple, brown, blue, black, pink, and even clear. Red garnets are most common.Garnets that are transparent are used in jewelry while opaque forms are used asin industrial uses as an abrasive. Garnets are incredibly durable hard minerals.Garnets can be considered vitreous (glass-like) or resinous (amber-like). Garnetsare the January birthstone and are considered to enhance health; pleasure andhelp people reach their potential. JadeJade refers to an ornamental mineral, mostly known for its green varieties. It isimportant in Asian and other cultures and is associated with nobility and status. Itis considered a stone for good fortune and success as well as prosperity and is acommon stone. Jade can be enhanced (sometimes called "stabilized"). Somemerchants will refer to these as grades, but the degree of enhancement isdifferent from color and texture quality.  Ethical jade sellers will list the type ofjade they are selling. It is often waxed or dyed to enhance color or used as alaminate over plastic.PeridotPeridot is gem-quality olivine. Peridot is one of the few gemstones that occur inonly one color: an olive-green. The shade of green depends on the amount ofiron in the crystal structure; so even a single peridot gem can vary from yellow toolive, to brownish-green. Olivine is found in meteors, the moon and in Mars andis a magnesium-rich gemstone. Peridot is semi-precious; deep green olivinewithout iron and other inclusions is so rare to be considered a precious gem. It isthe birthstone of October. It is claimed to be protective against jealousy, negativity, and resentment. Olivine is often confused with emerald. TurquoiseTurquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green stone that often has black or metal veiningfrom mineral inclusions. It is rare and valuable at its finer grades and has beenprized as a gemstone and ornamental stone for thousands of years owing to itsunique color and patterns. Turquoise has been devalued like most opaque gemsby imitations and synthetics being mass-produced. Turquoise is normally treatedto enhance both its color and durability.

My name is Carmen Costea. I live in Bucharest, Romania, which is a very beautiful country in Eastern Europe. I’m an electrical engineer now and I work in an electricity distribution company.
As a child, my talent stood out in my primary school drawing class, and my mother was advised by my teacher to enroll me into the local art school. My mother thought that I would die of hunger if I was a painter, so she guided me towards the exact sciences instead. Luckily, I really loved science because it is set in stone, and thus, I could really get to the bottom of it.
I rediscovered the pleasure of drawing almost three years ago, after a tragic incident happened in my life. Drawing became an escape from the real life.
One year later, I became fascinated by a watercolour tutorial on YouTube, and I tried to paint in watercolour myself. At first, I tried to learn by myself, without any help. My paintings from 2 years ago looked like anything but watercolour.
About a year after, I started playing around with watercolour. I met Iuliana Florea Lucan – a wonderful artist and teacher, who was very honest to me and said, “You know nothing about watercolour.” She pulled me to reality, and with her help, I started to learn about the techniques behind painting in watercolour.
The lesson in which I started to understand the meaning of watercolour was the class in which I painted with Indian ink. In that moment, I observed how beautiful the pigment dilutes into water and spreads on the paper. I was fascinated. I learned that colours and water are very hard to control, but at the same time they challenge you to play with them. To obtain a beautiful painting in watercolour you have to let the colour dance with water on the paper, merely suggesting a direction for it to go.
Now, I attend Iuliana’s watercolour classes weekly, improving my skills, and I paint by myself in every spare moment I have. These times are relaxing moments for my soul, an escape to another world – the world of imagination, colours, peace.
Through trials and errors, I learned that it is not enough to know how to paint. You also need quality materials to ensure an awesome piece of work is completed. My favourite tools that I like to use are Canson Moulin du Roy, Arches or Saunders Waterford – 100% cotton paper, and Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, White Nights St. Petersburg or Sonnet watercolours. I also use squirrel, horse or synthetic hair brushes, and I have some from Da Vinci, Raphaël, Tintoretto, ProArte and a few other brands.
My favourite techniques include trying to reproduce the texture of materials such as wood, glass, pearls, lace, embroidery or ceramic, the transparency of water or tea, and thus, I like to paint still life. I like to reproduce aristocratic, vintage, delicate things, but also I like to capture raw facial expressions in my watercolours.
I had a few shy attempts to participate in exhibitions: 3 in my country and one in Alcorcón, Spain, near Madrid, along with other Romanian watercolour painters. So far, I only received diplomas for participation, but I still enjoyed taking part in them.
All of my paintings are for my soul, even though I often offer some of them to my friends, as presents for different occasions. Painting is my pleasure, so I could spend many hours, without noticing them passing, without thoughts, as if I was meditating.

Sparkling Success
The most precious gems in the life of Matthew Ely are undoubtedly wife Nicole, daughter Amity and the new addition which will be joining the Ely clan early next year.
Diamonds, however, run a close second.
Born into a jewellery dynasty the pride of Sydney’s west, exquisite rocks have always played a significant role in the young entrepreneur’s childhood and early upbringing with father Robert, mother Helen and brother Douglas all involved in the trade.
“My parents own and operate [York Jewellers] a well-established jewellery business in Sydney’s [Penrith], which allowed me to experience the day-to-day running of the industry and gain an insight into the world of jewellery design. My mother and father have always exemplified a strong work ethic. I was extremely inspired by my father and his passion for design as a child, and his influence definitely shaped my approach to luxury jewellery design.” Yet despite his own success, and the early enthusiasm shown by his son, the family patriarch was initially apprehensive about allowing his second born into the family business.
In 1999 when he was 12, Matthew applied for a job at York but was knocked back with his father politely, but firmly, insisting there was no spot available. He encouraged the then teenager to instead try his hand at other trades.
Matthew found work at a furniture store and later as a boilermaker but the attraction of the jewellery industry proved too strong and three years later Robert relented and offered him a job at York as a sales assistant.
He began his formal jewellery design training at Enmore TAFE and was still in his first year when he placed first in the state and second nationally in the World Skills National Championship. On the back of that he received a scholarship to London with the Australian Overseas Foundation. Moving half way around the world at such a young age was not easy but it wouldn’t take him long to begin fulfilling his passion.
After securing digs in East Putney he started knocking on doors to find work. Just weeks after passing through Heathrow immigration, he secured a job in a manufacturing workshop, Jacobs Jewellery. With it arose the opportunity to work alongside, what Matthew describes as, some of the greatest designers in the industry. “The workshop manager had worked on some of the biggest diamonds in the world – 100 carat-plus – the diamond setter was a man whom had worked on the English crown jewels, and lastly, there was a New Zealand jeweller that manufactured the £1 million necklace from [219-year-old British fine jewellery design house] Boodles. My experiences in London working alongside three of the best jewellery mentors in the world were extremely inspirational in terms of my creativity and passion for design. Their expertise and humility in sharing their knowledge helped to refine my design practices and master the skills required to craft luxury bespoke pieces.” Yet, in spite of having easy access to an assortment of precious stones, to this day Matthew only wears a single piece of jewellery – his wedding band which itself also has a unique connection to the time he spent abroad. “This is a particularly important piece for me as l designed and crafted it myself and it features personal engravings which are very close to my heart. The engraving was a wedding gift from my engraving teacher in London. He was the engraver [employed] to carve the plaques in Westminster Abbey.”
Upon his return to Australia in 2014, Matthew was afforded the opportunity to open his own boutique in Woollahra in Sydney’s leafy eastern suburbs trading under the name Matthew Ely by York Jewellery. He admits being “enthralled” by the idea of transcending from small and rustic to grand and luxe while utilising the training and skills sharpened while he was abroad.
Despite it occurring some years ago, Matthew says he can still vividly recall his first customers, a recently engaged couple who trusted him to craft their engagement ring, offering him the opportunity to not only design an exquisite piece but to personally source the gems within the ring.
In 2011, Matthew, who by then was a qualified Gemmologist, took out the Creative Jewellery Design Award at the Showcase International Design Awards. Other accolades include the ‘Fancy Colour Award’ at the Diamond Guild Australia Awards in 2013 with an Argyle pink and Blue diamond ring and the ‘Red Carpet Award’ at the Showcase International Design Awards in 2015.
He has recently been invited to join the Diamond Guild and is now the youngest ever invited member. Showcasing a selection of his hand crafted, bespoke fine jewellery along with some award-winning pieces created over the years, his eponymous boutique specialises in custom one-off pieces but also offers recrafting of beloved pieces as well as repair and cleaning services.
Its point of difference is unquestionably the boutique’s bespoke design services. “We create distinct bespoke pieces that feature immaculate design and craftsmanship and draw on my experience and knowledge of the industry. My process creating bespoke pieces for clients is an outstanding concept that allows for personalisation and something more unique than your classic jewellery piece. For brides, it represents an exciting opportunity to design a new piece that is their own, as opposed to buying a ring that is ready-made in store.”
A typical entry price point for a bespoke engagement ring is around $15,000 and he has a “small and trusted group of jewellery makers” who assist in bringing his inspiration and designs to life. Every piece is designed and crafted onsite.
The process begins by Matthew inviting interested parties into the boutique where he gets to know them personally. Once in the store, clients are able to go into detail about what they’re looking for in their dream engagement ring or statement piece via a one-on-one consultation. Once clients have decided on their desired ring style, diamond (shape, cut, colour, clarity) and precious metal for the band, he hand draws various sketches of the piece so they can visualise how the piece will look once complete.
“I try to make these as realistic a representation as possible, believing it is crucial to ensure the end product closely resembles the dream piece that the client has in mind. We have the opportunity to source so many exquisite pieces for our clients, but one experience which I recall vividly was being asked to source a one carat Pink Diamond from Argyle for a private client. This was such an exciting experience, as I had the opportunity to touch and see one of the rarest gems in the world. With regards to value, I would never divulge, but I will say it had to be delivered by armoured guard.”
An advocate for ethical sourcing, Matthew says the boutique partners with a number of suppliers to locate and source some of the most stunning and rarest gems in the world. He takes particular pride in supporting Australian suppliers and materials and has worked closely with the Argyle mine in the past, to source natural gems. “I try to be vocal in my support of ethics in both gemmology and running a business.”.
Matthew says the jewellery industry has changed dramatically since he first became involved, particularly in the engagement market, where partners now spend much more to impress and meet much higher expectations from their brides to be.
“The old three-month salary rule is no longer valid, with couples spending more to craft their perfect bespoke piece to reflect their unique love story.”
But the greatest issue impacting the sector has been the use of synthetic diamonds – a development he believes has only increased the value and demand for luxurious high quality natural diamonds.
With such an abundance of different forms of diamonds available, the popularity of naturally coloured diamonds is continually on the increase and supported by growing industry demand over the past few years, he says. “There is a definite ‘Hollywood factor’ contributing to this rise in popularity, with naturally coloured diamonds exemplifying a modernity and fashion forward approach to jewellery design. We often see clients looking for something different or unusual in terms of their jewellery, and utilising a naturally coloured diamond is an excellent way to exemplify uniqueness whilst maintaining a luxurious design. I am also seeing a sharp increase in demand for pink diamonds with the announcement of the Argyle mine closing in 2021. This supply supports 95 percent of the pink diamonds in the world.”
The demand has also been extended to pearls which have also seen a resurgence in popularity. Having become somewhat of a destination for stunning pearls, Australia is in a perfect place to capitalise on this, he says. “The globalisation of the market has allowed for gems and other precious materials to be easily sourced by all. I think it’s now more important than ever to develop a trusted relationship with your jeweller. As an expert in the field, only a jeweller can provide you the knowledge and experience necessary to ensure you are truly paying for quality. There is a multitude of information online which may give people an impression of being a diamond expert. Whilst clients should by all means be informed, it’s important that they build a strong rapport with their jeweller so they can understand what they are buying.”
