Ye Olde Campaign Recap (part two)

Simm, Güd, and Kenzan finally reach the gates of Afrum- but are immediately stopped by a guard named Beurn to perform some formalities before they're allowed to enter the city. As the group does so, they're interrupted by a half-orc street urchin named Charity who claims that there's a monster in the slums. In spite of Beurn's warning that Charity is a liar, the party decides to follow her and investigate.

Charity leads the group to a ruined part of the lower city where three gargoyles are squatting on a ruined fountain. After some mishaps, the party manages to defeat two of the gargoyles, while the other escapes sans one foot. Upon their victory, the group is approached by Charity's 'employer,' a human rogue named Will Winterling. He informs them that the gargoyles were a test, and invites them back to his tavern to offer them a proposition. At the tavern, Simm, Güd, and Kenzan are joined by the gnome barbarian Fearghas Bonebreaker, a mercenary seeking work. Will tells them all he's seeking someone to find incriminating evidence that the Lady Bahl, one of Afrum's most powerful nobles, is practicing forbidden magic. He offers to pay handsomely in exchange for such evidence, which he plans to hand over to the City Council. He also suggests that the Lady is associated with those infected with a mind-altering illness, which piques the interest of Simm (who's still infected with Rhabdo). Will gives them a brooch in the shape of Lady Bahl's sigil, a tiger with a snake's tongue, as a means to escape scrutiny from any city guards. During this conversation, Simm realizes that he cannot say the word 'Rhabdo' anymore. In preparation for their investigation of Lady Bahl, Fearghas, Güd, and Simm go on a shopping trip. After their first visit to a blacksmith goes poorly, Charity, who's acting as their guide to the city, tells them of a shop she knows where anything can be bought. The catch is that it's in a bad part of town. Unfortunately, on the way to the shop, Fearghas is robbed by a tag-team consisting of an elf and a kenku. He loses not only his money, but his treasured pouch, which was a gift from his father. The shop Charity takes them to is run by a disreputable drow called Patoush, who attempts to cheat everyone out of their money. (For some reason, Simm is immediately quite charmed by him.) After completing their shopping, the group starts to head back to find an inn, only to stumble across two guardswomen bearing Lady Bahl's sigil beating a kenku in an alley. The kenku is the same one that robbed Fearghas. In a frenetic battle, the group ends up killing the two women (and Güd kidnaps their pet snake) only to discover that they were both Yuan-ti purebloods. The kenku, his life saved, reveals his name to be Shinygem and manages to convey to the group that he was betrayed by his elf companion over a map he was hired to draw of the Lady Bahl's manor. Their employer was Will Winterling. Shinygem, however, has managed to keep hold of the map and gives it over to the group as a peace offering. Around this time, everyone realizes that Charity has vanished. They manage to track her down back at Winterling's Tavern, where they also find the elf thief. After breaking up a fight and stopping Shinygem from murdering the sniveling elf on sight, Fearghas recovers his pouch- sans money, but with a mysterious note inside. Charity begs the group not to be angry with Will, who provides food and shelter for the city's poorest orphans in exchange for a cut of their pickpocketing. As a gesture of goodwill, Charity takes everyone to a reputable inn called the Yellow-Eyed Dog in Middle Afrum. She also introduces them to her 'cousin,' a fullblooded orc named Rahab who was recently kicked out of the College of Bards for her race. Rahab agrees to join the group, and performs for the inn, which seems to soothe the nervous (prejudiced against orcs) barkeep. At this time, Güd leaves the group, seeking more squirrels. That night, Simm experiments and finds that not only can he not say 'Rhabdo,' he can't write it or spell it out. The next morning, everyone is woken by a raid conducted by the guard Beurn, who was told by the barkeep that there was a dangerous orc on the premises. Simm, Kenzan, and Fearghas manage to distract Beurn long enough for Rahab to escape out a window. Simm, Rahab, and Kenzan reconvene near the docks of Middle Afrum, and decide they need to make a plan to take on Lady Bahl's manor. Conveniently, Shinygem shows up and agrees to lead them to a place where they can speak without being overheard. Much to their surprise, the Kenku leads them back to Patoush's shop, where the drow reluctantly admits them into his private back room (for a price). Simm is thrilled to find the room holds an impressive collection of preserved and taxidermied specimens of both beasts and monsters. Rahab, Simm, and Kenzan settle on a plan to try approaching Lady Bahl directly rather than sneaking in, with subterfuge as the secondary option. Simm realizes that he can say 'Rhabdo' again, and Rahab is also able to say the word. Rahab recalls a spell called 'Forbidden Speech,' which stops the bespelled individual from talking about certain topics, and Simm wonders who could have cast it. Later that same day, Fearghas, Simm, and Rahab begin the assault on the Lady's manor. Things seem to start out well, with a suspicious city guard scared off by Rahab flashing the Lady's sigil, but quickly go downhill. The two Yuan-ti guards stationed at the Lady's gate quickly see through the ruse concocted by Fearghas and Rahab, and while Rahab makes a tactical retreat, Fearghas stays and taunts them. The end result is a fight with the two guards (and also a two-headed death dog). Those guards defeated, the trio manages to escape into a courtyard before more guards spot them. Kenzan joins them at this point, a little worse for wear after some misadventures of their own. Within the courtyard, the party discovers an orange fairy dragon named Nathair, which cajoles them to show him something pretty unless they want him to fetch more guards. After some stunning failures, Kenzan manages to impress the little dragon with a show of radiant force that pulverizes a boulder. He informs the group that he's run away from his mistress and is bored of waiting for her to come fetch him. As the group investigates the courtyard for a way into Lady Bahl's main house, Fearghas discovers a disguised spectator monster, which promptly uses its eye-beams to paralyze Nathair. The spectator offers to play a game with them rather than fight, and the group reluctantly agrees. They manage to get through each of the spectator's elemental-themed riddles, with some fights against mephits and a fire snake along the way. The spectator rewards them handsomely with potions of water breathing and hill giant strength, an elemental gem, and the door to the main house. Nathair decides to travel onwards with the group. Within the Lady Bahl's main house, they are greeted by a lavish antechamber occupied by a pair of tigers and a pair of wererats who seem very familiar. In fact, the wererats are the elven twins Nyarro and Nagol that Simm and Kenzan met on the road to Afrum. There's a brief scuffle with the tigers, which Nyarro warns Simm not to hurt because they're the Lady's beloved pets; ironically, Nyarro himself ends up shocking one of the tigers to paralyze it. The commotion is immediately halted by the appearance of Wedge, the twins' foster mother. Wedge seems hesitant to fully trust the group, since they now know that Nagol and Nyarro are therianthropes (a condition punishable by death within Afrum). She informs them that Lady Bahl gives them shelter under her roof, and therefore she won't go against any decision her patron makes. The Lady herself now finally makes an appearance. Initially, she's quite displeased to find that one of her tigers has minor injuries. Kenzan takes the blame, and the Lady speculates about beheading her, but Nyarro steps up and admits that it was his fault. Lady Bahl decides that she'll allow the group to live, since she, too, has an interest in eking out the source of Rhabdo, which she thinks is intended to totally destroy Afrum. During this conversation, Simm and Rahab both can't say the word again. The Lady tells them that the Forbidden Speech spell has been cast over the whole city by powerful magic. (She also informs them that Alister tried to sneak into her manor, resulting in his swift and untimely death.) Wedge informs the group that she and the twins investigated Durmgrist Keep, the abandoned outpost where Simm and Alister met the vicious vrock Ja'am. They discovered letters written by Fangith (one of the conspirators behind Afrum's Calamity) detailing his research and indicating that he was the mind behind Rhabdo (which Wedge refers to not as a disease, but as a curse). According to the final letter, Fangith escaped execution by fleeing into the Underdark. With some trepidation, our heroes decide to seek out Fangith in the drow city of Ungethal- after a good rest. Wedge directs them to the nearby Lunar Abbey, a temple dedicated to the moon goddess Selûne. That night, as they sleep, each adventurer is visited by a strange dream...
