JANUARY 2019 UPDATE www.arcadequartermaster.com
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Three beat-em-ups are now live as 2019 opens!
HOOK: Based from the 1991 Spielberg movie with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman, the colorful graphics that made Irem’s games so visually appealing is very palpable in this game as the movie is brought alive in the video arcade screen. Irem faithfully adapted numerous key scenes and elements from the film into the game. Peter Pan and the New Lost Boys (Zuko, Zuko, Zu-- wait...) each have distinct combos, special moves and radial attacks, while items from the movie even appear as power-ups! Of course, players have to battle the eccentric pirates of the Jolly Roger, with Hook being a recurring boss throughout the game, culminating with the final battle near the Crocodile Clock.
LOST CASTLE IN DARKMIST: Taito/World Games’ closest version to a Legend of Zelda & Tower of Druaga hybird in the arcades, the player guides an unnamed knight in gold armor through the eponymous land to battle numerous fantasy creatures across various terrain types. As the knight cuts down monsters, numerous magical items become available for use by the the knight to cast spells or allow him to cross deep water. As with various RPGs, players can visit a town to heal up and trade the gold treasures to buy new equipment. The objective is to reach one of the castles in Darkmist, and the game loops to another linear path until all 4 castles are found to complete the game.
GUARDIANS OF THE ‘HOOD: Atari’s pseudo-sequel to Pit Fighter, players choose from four body-building Guardians to liberate Center City from the rampant crime done by the local gangs with their punches, kicks and the help of throwing dumpsters and pipes. As the Guardians clear out each gang and defeat the leader, that leader joins the team as a new selectable Guardian. Recruit all 3 gang leaders, and locate “Mr. Big” for the last battle in the abandoned boardwalk! It also references Pit Fighter with the sparring games between stages. Infamous for its digitized sprite usage and stiff, clunky controls, Guardians did not really live up to its time, being released in the same year as Midway’s own Mortal Kombat, along with the flood of better-done original IP and licensed beat-em-ups by other companies.
I had the hold back a bit because I’m saving up more shrines to release for the upcoming 2-part 11th Anniversary updates. Guardians will be a sample of the recurring theme of several of the new shrines that will be featured for 2019. I hope you liked the new shrines and again, Happy Holidays!

"What's this world coming to? It's the second time in two days I've been treated like a kid!"
STEVEN SPELBERG BOY GENIUS YOU ARE BREAKING MY HEART
he says this as Columbo is leaving the room after asking him to babysit his dog while he investigates
Columbo's leaving and Steve (I shall use Steve when I'm not being hyperbolic as it's what he tells Columbo he prefers to be called) is desperately reaching out for even a minute's more interaction with a person who talked to him kindly and treated him like a kid as well as respecting his intelligence and admiring his robot, making a joke about being treated in an age-appropriate manner like that's wacky
the other time he was treated like a kid? was when Jose Ferrer arranged for him to go to a movie as part of creating his alibi for the murder of the week (to silence a colleague with integrity who planned to expose the plagiarism of his son, Charlie X from Star Trek)
he only got to go do a fun entertaining thing (see a frankly weird-sounding movie called "The Loves of Frankenstein") because a prospective murderer was orchestrating an alibi
what's more, it's a movie Steve thought he couldn't see, because it was R-rated so he needed a parent or guardian to accompany him
THERE IS NO ONE WHO CAN BE EXPECTED TO ACCOMPANY BOY GENIUS STEVEN SPELBERG IF HE NEEDS A PARENT OR GUARDIAN
the parent or guardian provided for him? a mechanic from the cybernetics institute motor pool! they literally sent him to the movies with a random middle-aged man
WHO IS RAISING BOY GENIUS STEVEN SPELBERG
I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF BOY GENIUS STEVEN SPELBERG
you can't just speedrun this shit with an all-night encounter group therapy marathon!

do you have any favorite columbo side characters? your blog inspired me to do a rewatch and peter falk is great as always but i'm especially loving the supporting cast!
first of all, happy columbo sunday! second of all, i absolutely do!
some of my very favorite supporting characters are wilson (the greenhouse jungle, now you see him), goldie from the architecture episode (HIGHKEY one of my favorites), the murder victim’s roommate who never shuts up in the leonard nimoy episode, vincent price in lovely but lethal!!!!!!! the nun who mistakes columbo for a homeless person in... i think that one is the dick van dyke episode? celeste holm in an old-fashioned murder as the sister who faints every time columbo says homicide. the whiz kid named steven spelberg.
there’s honesty so many - i’m partial to the ones who make me laugh - but one supporting character rises above all else

I love how weta, ilm, George Lucas, Pixar, and Steven spelberg have been weirdly like the creators of modern film making and 3d animation like it’s oddly incredible how much ilm and weta have done for special effects

"Mind Over Mayhem" is not a very good or believable Columbo, but the part I'm having the most difficulty with is a psychologist's alibi being that she was supervising an all-night encounter group therapy marathon session.
which sounds unbelievably shady, psychologically damaging, and just plain impractical!

Steven Spielberg: Star Wars Bukan Genre Saya [Tolak Star Wars]
Sosok yang berada di belakang kesuksesan Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dan E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial melihat film fiksi seperti Star Wars bukan termasuk bidangnya.

Spielberg Makes His Own Porn Movie
Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" is Spielberg porn in its most purest form. It has everything you would ever expect from a classic Steven Spielberg movie: it's visually gorgeous, epic in scope, overly earnest and know exactly what buttons to push in order to get an emotional response out of its audience. It is that very earnestness and emotional honesty that is the best thing about this movie. But it is also the worst.
Based on a popular children's novel and a Broadway play, "War Horse" tells the story of Joey, a young horse who at the beginning of the movie is bought by a farmer (Peter Mullen) who brings back to his farm, much to the dismay of his wife (Emily Watson). Imagine this, married women readers: you're on the brink of losing your home and your husband spends your entire life savings... on a horse. Anyway, the farmer's son (Jeremy Irvine) immediately bonds with Joey and takes it upon himself to train him. But circumstances force the farmer to sell Joey to the British army. Thus begins Joey's odyssey of sorts, ending up in the hands of multiple colorful characters, ranging from a British officer (Tom Hiddleston), a German soldier (David Kross) to a French little girl living on a farm with her loving grandfather (Niels Aerstrup)...
I would argue that "War Horse" is the most divisive movie of 2011, right next to "The Tree of Life" I'm sure many of you are surprised I'm comparing these two very different movies, but just as much your appreciation for "The Tree of Life" depended on your tolerance of Terrence Malick being Terrence Malick, whether you'll enjoy "War Horse" depends upon your tolerance of earnest schmaltz and magical horses. Personally, I was very hot and cold on it.
First the good stuff. "War Horse" is a beautiful movie just to watch. Spielberg and his cinematographer Janusz Kaminski have created individual sequences that will stir up emotions in every serious film lover: Joey running through beautiful landscapes while John Williams' amazing score is playing in the background , Joey running through a WW1 battlefield all the while bombs and machine guns are blasting away, conveniently hitting everything and everybody except Joey. Logic be damned. The movie is at its strongest when its dealing with the human relationships. The people Joey ends up during his journey ooze with kindness and decency.  They all do whatever it takes to protect their loved ones. The interactions  between the characters feel very honest and true, especially the scene where the British officer promises to the boy he will return Joey to the boy's care. It's subtle, with a pitch perfect performance by Tom Hiddleston.  All of the performances work very well and bring much needed gravitas to this story.
The not so good stuff: Joey! While I understand that Spielberg uses Joey as a Deus Ex Machina for the characters the horse interacts with, it's overdone to the point of self-parody . Joey is not an ordinary horse, he's a MAGICAL horse who understands absolutely everything that everybody is saying to him, intervenes whenever things get tough for the other characters and worst of all, he occasionally makes the characters act like idiots because they're so smitten. The worst of this is when a doctor completely ignores wounded soldiers (as in "human beings") to, what else... take care of the wounded horse. Moments like these keep the movie from fully soaring emotionally.
On a more personal level, I was most disappointed with the depiction of war in this movie.  I understand that this is based on a children's novel and is supposed to be a family movie, but I still wish the battle sequences (although gorgeously shot)  were more  brutal, especially from someone like Steven Spielberg. The PG-13 rating is no excuse not  to be able to make violent situations effective (I'm looking at you, "Hunger Games"), but for some reason, Spielberg cuts away whenever a character is supposed to die, seriously lessening the intended impact.
I'm sure a lot of people will adore "War Horse" precisely for the reasons that kept me from loving it, hence its polarizing nature. Joey will bring some people to tears, while other will feel their head hurting from all the eye rolling. Overall, I enjoyed it for the technical aspects of it, the humanity and the human relationships. It's a good movie, seriously weakened by it's main subject matter.

Quincy Jones
The Colour Purple Soundtrack
@1985 UK Pressing, Purple Vinyl
**** The most amazing thing about The Color Purple soundtrack is how its music truly complemented the musical stories of the characters. One example is the subtle, definitive, and somewhat comical "Sofia's Walk." As contrast, there is also the very poignant piece for the main character Celie's 'coming into her own' titled "I'm Here" (this piece actually can bring me to tears [not an easy feat for me]). The most genius, though--and my absolute favorite--is "Champayne Train." Now, this piece embodies the total transition of the character (and film, in my opinion) through Celie's fantasy: a scene of her standing on a train in motion, sipping champagne and tossing little chocolate candies out to the spirit of her sister Nettie. Emotions of reunion of hearts, elation, light at the end of the tunnel, faith and overcomming are truly generated here. I invite you to listen closely as the instruments in this piece is capturing the sounds of a train when in motion is rocking and swaying across the tracks. Wow! How did they do that!? All I can say is: High Kudos to Quincy Jones and Company for this accomplishment. I give this review four (4) stars, because this is a 2 CD set and I do not feel equal passion for every piece, but other than that, this set is worth it. I had this production on LP and it has been on my CD wish list for a number of years (too many). This was a much needed buy for my movie soundtrack collection.
