The Phantom Soldier
@codename-alias Thanks to this beautiful person I've started a new story. It's going to be covering harsh topics such as torture, PTSD, and whatever else I come up with in the future. So, if this isn't for you then just rest assured I'll soon get back to posting about Danny and the Batfam.
Chapter 1- You with those sad eyes
Tensions are still high between Tony and the Rogues after the incident in Siberia. Once Steve had gotten far enough away, he’d given Pepper a call to send someone for Tony, feeling guilty about leaving him stranded in the cold as injured as he was. It’s a couple of months before Tony is healed both physically and mentally from the pain that Steve had wrought upon him, but he does eventually use the phone that Steve had left behind.
Steve had apologized for what had happened in Siberia but doubles down when anyone says anything bad about Bucky. Tony had realized that both of them had acted in the heat of the moment but ultimately still feels betrayed at the secrets that should have been aired long before that moment, and can’t quite trust Steve to have his back.
Bucky holds such phenomenal guilt at the anguish he had caused that he hides in Steve’s room back at the tower most of the time. Anytime Tony and he are in the same room together, Bucky immediately disappears in the hopes that Tony won’t hate him any more than he does. It helps to soothe some things in Tony, but until they talk it out everyone walks around on eggshells.
While the two teams try to figure out a way to balance this fragile truth, Steve brings to light the Hydra cells that still seem to be in play even after the mass info dump. They’re so well hidden that Steve and Natasha can’t figure out where to go even with her amazing hacking skills. So, they think that maybe Tony might have better luck, and luck he has in spades.
Tony creates a program that searches for key files by infiltrating the entire net, no matter how deep it has to dig. Anything that had to do with Hydra, the Winter Soldier Program, or the Super Soldier Serum is viciously dug into and scrutinized. They manage to find several active Hydra cells in this way, although, by the time the teams get there, the entire place is always emptied of everything but the office furniture.
It isn’t until they come across a small piece of information about something called The Phantom Soldier that Tony decides that they need to use a different tactic since they are obviously not getting anywhere. When Tony asks Bucky if he’d heard of or seen this “Phantom Soldier Project”, Bucky pales.
“Well, that’s not a good sign. Come on, out with it. What’s got you looking so scared?” Tony asks as he leans up against the kitchen counter.
“The Phantom Soldier was something I was supposed to train,” Bucky says. “My handlers liked to talk about Phantom, and from what I could piece together when I broke free, it was a kid. Or…something that looked like a kid. Hydra made a deal with some government agency called GIW. They believed that ghosts are real and have the ability to mimic human form while only having a more animalistic mind. The GIW captured one who looked like a kid but had more power than the gods.” Bucky looks apprehensive as he continues, his expression darkening. “I don’t know what Hydra gave them in return for this kid but one of the few things I do remember is them hooking up a teenager to the chair. The one that wipes minds. That wiped my mind.” He sits down in one of the chairs at the island, avoiding Tony’s gaze..
“That sounds both insane and horrible. How come you didn’t bring this up before?” Tony asks, crossing his arms.
With his head in his hands, Bucky groans, “Because I thought it was just more nightmares. I can only remember bits and pieces of Phantom and I really thought it was just one of the many things that I’d made up. I mean, who actually believes ghosts exist?”
“I would say no one does but I would be lying. The things we’ve seen make me believe in a lot nowadays.” Tony starts messing with his phone. “Friday, add all this information to the search parameters and see if we can’t find something. Make this a high priority.”
“Sir, it would appear that someone has tried to do a media blackout for anything related to Phantom,” Friday replies. “I’ve started the process of deciphering all information and tracing back to whoever might be placing these orders,” she informs Tony as large files of information are dumped into his phone. It’s going to take him hours to go through everything.
“I don’t care where it leads back to,” Tony says. “Find out what’s going on and who’s doing it. Quietly, if possible. If not, well, they can try and do something about it. See where it gets them.”
~~~
It takes almost a year before Friday can track down a Hydra cell that still seems to be active. More pieces of information are found about The Phantom Soldier the deeper Friday digs. Like how they acquired the subject when it appeared to be 16. The different ways they tortured the creature. How it seemed to have a weakness to electricity. A few pictures are even found to go along with some of these reports.
The more information Tony goes through, the more sickened he feels.
Tony has to find this kid.
Thankfully, Friday is able to narrow down the location of the cell and finds it outside a small town in Missouri. The population of the town is only in the hundreds and seems to be isolated enough that the nearest city is two hours away. A perfect place for Hydra to hide.
Tony has both teams meet him in one of the meeting rooms for a debrief.
Natasha, Steve, Bucky, and Sam all sit next to each other while Vision, Wanda, and Pietro sit at the end. Tony stands at the front of the table where a large TV sits on the wall. Rhodey, Bruce, Clint, and Peter sit on the other side. Tony had tried to get Peter to stay behind but the teen had heard about the torture that the Phantom Soldier had gone through and wouldn’t take no for an answer. So, rather than argue with him, Tony let him in on the meeting. Besides, the kid might be able to help in the long run.
“Friday found the base for an active Hydra cell near a small town in Missouri. From the heat signatures, the base is extremely large.” Tony activates a hologram that sits in the middle of the table. It spreads across the table showing off the building and the surrounding areas, including the entire town.
“From the thermal images Friday has been able to get, there are a large number of Hydra inside. There’s a particularly large cold spot that I think might be where they’re holding Phantom,” Tony says, glancing around the table at everyone. “The security in this place is some of the most high-quality shit. Obviously, it’s still not as good as mine, but some of it is better than what the army has. Friday will be able to hack into it, but someone needs to get her into the system first.”
Natasha clears her throat. “I’ll sneak in to activate her. What kind of security are we looking at?”
Tony flicks his wrist and the hologram changes to show a bunch of different devices. “Their security cameras have both thermal and night vision with very few blind spots. I should be able to give you a jammer that will loop the feed for a few minutes,” he says. “There’s something in the walls that I haven’t figured out what they’re for, but they do have an off switch. They aren’t supposed to inflict harm,  that much I do know. I think it’s some kind of shield, but with an amount of power usage that I’ve never seen.”
He zooms in on a couple of the devices, rotating them so the holograms can be seen from all angles. “Some traps are embedded into the ceiling in case of any subjects escaping, although they only come down if an alarm is sounded. I’ll cook up something that will help you out just in case. You’ve got the typical guards patrolling the place.” Tony zooms back out and surveys his former teammates. “That was all I could find so far. The notes mention something about ‘ectoplasm’, but I haven’t been able to find anything out about it, so I’d just watch out for anything suspicious.”
Natasha nods. “Maybe Bruce can find something out about it from his peers? If it has anything to do with ghosts, then there has to be some kind of information floating about in the scientific field?”
Bruce quickly adjusts his glasses as he speaks up. “I asked around if anyone had heard of anything like ectoplasm and when I mentioned ghosts they laughed at me,” he says. “If it is connected, then the information is so well hidden that the rest of the community has never heard of it.”
Peter raises his hand as he looks around at the group nervously.
Tony sighs and rolls his eyes. “Kid, this isn’t school. You don’t have to raise your hand.”
“Oh, uh, ok.” Peter looks at Tony before pressing on. “When I was starting middle school, there was this thing going around on Facebook. Some kid from a town called Amity Park was talking about how haunted their town was. The posts continued for a few weeks before it just stopped. When I tried looking into it, all I could find was a deleted account.”
“So, besides talking about how haunted it was, was there other information?” Steve asks.
Peter nods. “Yeah. This kid would talk about whatever ghost seemed to be attacking the town. After a while, they started talking about this ghost called Phantom that would fight the other ghosts. The kids seemed to like him alright but none of the adults could stand him. The kid even posted a video of one of the attacks but the quality was really bad and it was hard to see what was going on. Something about some ghost called Skuller or Scaller or something. It was like something was interfering with the video.” He shrugs and relaxes back in his seat.
“Huh. I'm surprised the media didn't pick up on that. Sounds like something that would definitely grab the news attention,” Sam says, leaning forward slightly.
Wanda stops looking at the hologram to stare down Tony. “It doesn't surprise me that someone shut down any way for this kind of thing to get out. In the world we live in now, it wouldn't surprise us to find out ghosts are out there, but back then? It would cause panic and fear. Not to mention the army trying to figure out how to turn them into weapons if they can.”
“Except Hydra found out about it first and it looks like they turned this ghost kid into a weapon. How much you wanna bet they're the ones behind the blackout?” Sam says.
Nat scoffs and shakes her head. “That's not a bet I'm willing to take. I'm surprised this wasn't part of the info dump that went out. Otherwise, this news would have been everywhere.”
“Maybe a completely cut-off section of Hydra? One that wasn't part of the rest of the system, but how that’s possible I don't know.” Steve says with a shrug, while the rest of them wonder how something so monumental could have been kept hidden for so long.
“When are we heading out?” Rhodey asks. “And who's going? A facility this large means you're going to need a lot of backup.”
Pietro scoffs at the assessment and everyone turns to look at him. He shrugs. “I could take out the entire place in seconds. I could do that before your computer even hacks the place.”
“Is that so?” Tony says, crossing his arms. “What are you going to do if you come across this ectoplasm stuff and you can't get past it? Or it hurts you, or it negates your speed? We don't have enough information about this place for you to go in unprepared. Maybe after we get the defenses taken down you could, but it's still dangerous with that Phantom character around.”
Wanda hits her brother's arm lightly. “Think before you speak, brother. Not all problems can be solved with your abilities.”
“Most can,” Pietro mumbles quietly enough that no one comments on it.
“As for everyone going,” Tony says as he claps his hands together, drawing the attention back to him, “We need Nat to sneak in and get Friday into Hydra’s system. Everyone else hangs back until security is down and their alarms are useless. Then Cap and his bestie can break down the front door while the twins go in the back. I want Vision to hang back until we find out just where and how to help this kid.”
He shifts his attention to Rhodey and Bruce, who are sitting next to each other. “Sam and I will be air support while Rhodey makes sure the army comes running to sweep up the mess we are definitely going to be making. We don't know what state this kid is gonna be in if we even find him, so I'm going to have Cho stay on the plane with Bruce as her assistant. I don't think we'll need mean and green, but I'd feel better if Cho had someone with her, just to be on the safe side.”
“Mr. Stark, what do you want me to do?” Peter says, looking excited about the prospect of getting to go on an Avengers mission. He’s never gotten to go with the team on these sorts of things, but he really wants to go and help the poor soul that's been tortured.
“Yeah, no. You are gonna stay here and man the helm. Your aunt would kill me if I let you go,” Tony says as he waggles a finger at the kid. It may be childish but nobody ever said he was mature.
Peter sputters his protest as he stands up, gesturing wildly as he talks. “I can help! I swear I won't get in anybody's way or get hurt. I can even be backup like Mr. Banner! Mr. Stark, please, please, let me go with you.”
Peter pulls out his ultimate weapon and gives him the puppy eyes. The others look away except for Clint, who has kids and has become immune to that look no matter what his wife says.
“No. Nu-uh. Nope. Not happening. Absolutely not.” Tony completely avoids the look by staring down at his phone. “There's no telling what this kid can do and I'm not going to be the one to tell May that you got hurt because you wanted to tag along on a mission way above your pay grade. You can monitor the progress from the safety of the tower and that's final.”
With a sigh, Peter drops back into his chair the way only a teenager can. “Fine but I get to meet him once you get him back here and patched up.”
The genius stares at his apprentice for a moment, just long enough to make the teenager squirm in his seat. “We'll see.”
“How long before we're ready to go?” Steve asks as he watches Peter slump in his seat, defeated.
“I'll leave now and let the higher-ups know to be ready. Let me know when we can move in.” Rhodey says as he stands up and hugs Tony before leaving the room.
“Be prepared to go by midday tomorrow,” Tony replies “Hopefully, Friday will have even more detailed information for us.”
The groups leave after that, all going their separate ways to get ready for the mission. All except Peter who glumly goes back to Queens to do his evening patrol.
~~~
“Okay, people! We land in 10. Everyone knows their part, so do your last-minute checks now.” Natasha says from the pilot seat of the Quinjet.
Everyone adds the last bit of necessary items to their persons as the jet lands.
Natasha leaves the jet first, quickly and quietly easing herself into the building unseen. Tony had been able to get better pictures of the guards and had made her a matching outfit to go over her Widow outfit. Between that and the face cloaking device she wears, she’s unrecognizable.
It doesn’t take long for her to find an empty office with a usable computer. After powering up the device, she sticks the flash drive holding Friday in. It only takes five minutes before Tony is on the comm telling her the security system is down and all parties are go for entry.
It doesn't take long for the Hydra agents and staff to start rushing around in a panic. Pietro finds Natasha almost instantly knocking out any guards that come around.
“Hold your breath. Tony wants me to take you to the lab where the scientists are,” Pietro says, grabbing Natasha’s arm with one hand and bracing her neck and head with the other.
This isn't the first time he's done this to one of the team members. They've all practiced this maneuver during training so that the motion doesn't catch anyone unaware. So, she does what he says without question.
It barely takes a second as they zip through halls faster than the eye can see. Thankfully, Natasha’d had the foresight to put her hair up so that the flowing red locks wouldn’t tangle into a horrid mess. The sudden stop unbalances her for a second.
The entire room of scientists are in shock as Natasha and Pietro suddenly appear. The scientists startle as their brains finally kick into gear but before they have the chance to react, Pietro already has them tied up with tape around their mouths.
“Well, that was easy,” Natasha says amusedly. “What’s in here that he wants…” She trails off as she looks around. On one wall are large screens showing off a lot of information on one subject. Hurrying over to them, Natasha takes pictures of each screen so they can be inspected much closer later.
Going through a computer, she finds a file on The Phantom Soldier Project. Not only does it include information about the various ways they tortured the subject, but it also has information on how they’re controlling it. The file also tells her exactly where the kid is now.
“If anyone can hear me, Phantom is in a cell on the Northwest side,” Natasha says into her comm. “His room has those weird shields in the wall preventing him from getting out, so you might have to break down the door. There should also be a collar around his neck that prevents him from using his abilities. Someone try to get to him before Hydra activates him!” As she speaks, Nat pulls out another flash drive and starts downloading all the files she can get her hands on.
“We’re on it,” Steve replies into the comms.
Natasha pulls the flash drive out of the computer and places it in a nearly invisible pocket in her suit. “The lab is secure and I’ve got the flash drive. Anyone need help?”
“I could use-” Clint’s sentence is cut off by a grunt as a Hydra agent manages to kick him in the knee. He’s at a disadvantage as the number of agents overwhelms him.
Natasha doesn’t have to say anything to Pietro before he’s rushing her to Clint’s side.
There are small burns all over Clint from the guns that Hydra has, something the two Shield agents have never seen before. The gun barrel glows a bright neon green with the same colored smoke coming off it. Clint grits his teeth from the sharp pain.
Natasha and Pietro make quick work of the agents, taking a few of the guns in the process.
“What in the hell is this powered with?” Clint grunts as he stands up, grabs a dropped gun, and looks it over. “Is this that ectoplasm that Tony was talking about? It hurts like a bitch.”
Suddenly, a large explosion shakes the entire building and several alarms go off, bathing the hallways in red. A high-pitched scream echoes through the comms along with static and sharp crackling.
“What was that?” Tony shouts, sounding slightly distracted.
“Wasn’t from my end,” Natasha and Wanda say at the exact same time.
Clint and Natasha look at each other with concern on their faces. “Steve.”
~~~
“We’re on it,” Steve says, grunting as he takes a gut punch from an agent.
Bucky appears suddenly and picks the agent up. As if the guy weighs nothing, Bucky throws him at a wall, swings around, and punches another agent in the face with a harsh crunching noise. With a practiced elegance, the two super soldiers dance around each other with ease, each fending off a blow that was aimed at the other. They’d spent so much time together that they knew each other's movements without having to communicate it.
By the time they’ve gotten the agents taken care of, the floor is littered with bodies. Most are unconscious but there are a few who met the wrong end of Bucky’s guns. There are scorch marks mixed in amongst the blood splatters along the walls from these new weapons, but Steve and Bucky’s bodies are already healing, leaving behind red welts instead of burns.
“We need to hurry, Steve,” Bucky says. “If Hydra has done to this kid even half of what they did to me, then we’re going to be in for a rough time. We have to hope that they haven’t been able to activate him.” Bucky continues in the direction they were headed before they got ambushed.
“What do you remember about this kid, Bucky?” Steve asks as he takes off after him.
“He wasn’t human. They made him wear this thing that prevented him from using his powers. It was a collar but it would inject him with this poison so that he was too weak to escape. They made me train him to fight without any of his abilities so I don’t know what he can actually do.” Bucky grimaces slightly as he continues. “They were still trying to turn him into an obedient little soldier when I left. Something about his physiology prevented the chair from being completely effective.” He sounds regretful. His role in this made him ashamed even if it wasn’t his fault.
“Did they try and add any…accessories to him like they did with you?” Steve asks.
“I don’t know. Well, I don’t remember,” Bucky replies.
They slow down as they come to a section of the building on the northwest side. It’s glowing slightly with the same neon green that came from the Hydra weapons. Steve’s pretty sure that this is the correct area, but he doesn’t want to be wrong and come across another new weapon that Hydra has made.
The hallway they’re in is filled with steel doors. There must be about fifty doors lining both sides of the hallway with no markings on most of them. Bucky and Steve each cautiously open a door and find that the room inside is an empty cell.
The rooms are dark, with only the light from the hallway shining in letting them see just how barren it was. The only things in the rooms were a simple toilet, sink, and bed. Leaving the door open, Bucky and Steve move on to the next room.
They check room after room, only to find them all empty. When Bucky gets to a door marked with a number, he whistles to get Steve’s attention.
The room is locked and they don’t have the time to find the keys, so they try to bust down the door. With both of them kicking down the door at the same time, it finally dents inward enough to peel away from the walls. Both of them grab a side and pull, using the entirety of their strength until they’ve ripped the door off the hinges.
Inside is a kid who looks like they’re on their deathbed. They’re lying on the bed with their back to Bucky and Steve. Neither Bucky nor Steve can hear a heartbeat, but the kid doesn’t stop them from coming into the room.
This room is brighter than the others, a soft green light bathing everything in a sickly glow.
“Hello?” Steve walks forward cautiously.
The kid doesn’t move and they still can’t hear a heartbeat. When Steve finally gets over to the kid, he puts two fingers on their neck to check the pulse. There’s no heartbeat and the kid’s skin is cold to the touch. With a sad sigh, Steve leaves the kid where they are and turns to Bucky. Bucky looks upset when Steve shakes his head, but there’s nothing either of them can do, so they move on.
They quickly realize that the doors with no markings are all empty, so they only go after the doors with markings. With each unmoving kid that they find inside, the super soldiers become more and more hopeless. It isn’t until they get to the end of the hallway that they realize that they only have one door left, and with it, all their hope that the person inside is alive.
Steve and Bucky rip the door off its hinges, but before Steve can walk inside, Bucky puts a hand on his chest to stop him.
Inside the center of the room is a glowing boy, kneeling and chained to the floor. He can’t be more than 17 or 18. His hair is pure white and floats as if gravity has no hold on it. His eyes are clenched shut and he looks absolutely terrified. There’s a thick metal collar around his neck that hangs around his neck tightly. Chains hang from his wrists and ankles, leading to several metal loops in the floor, all tightly drawn so that he’s forced to kneel.
The kid has no shirt on and looks malnourished, his ribs practically poking through his skin. Wounds and bruises cover every inch of exposed skin, making it hard to tell if the slight green from his skin is natural or if all the injuries cause it. The poor boy is hunching over as much as he can with the chains attached.
Bucky takes a step forward into the room, but it’s Steve that calls out gently. “Phantom?”
A sharp intake of breath comes from the kid and he flinches. He opens his eyes and his gaze immediately locks on to Bucky. Panic and terror flood through his glowing emerald eyes as Phantom starts jerking viciously on his chains.
“Nononononono.” Phantom cries over and over again, desperately trying to get away from the person in front of him. “I’ll be good. I swear. I’ll do better this time. I’m sorry. I won’t do it again. Please don’t hurt me. I swear. I’ll be good. I’ll do it right. Whatever you want.”
Anguish twists Bucky’s expression as he listens to the teen’s frantic pleading. He’s frozen to the spot watching the tortured soul trying to break free of his prison. What did they do to this kid? he thinks. Fuck. What did I do to him?
Steve slowly walks past Bucky, towards the struggling boy. With all his strength, he crushes the collar and rips it off Phantom’s neck. It takes Phantom only a few seconds to realize he no longer has the steel wrapped around his neck, but when he does, it’s like his whole demeanor shifts.
There’s a cunning gleam in his eyes and with a deep breath, Phantom screams loud and clear. The sound is deafening, forcing both Bucky and Steve to cover their ears. Phantom stops and takes an even deeper breath and the scream becomes something more.
It’s a banshee scream that sends Bucky and Steve flying back through the doorway they’d walked through. They’re sent flying all the way out of the room into the opposite side of the hallway with such force that they dent the wall. The longer the wail goes on, the more the walls start to shake, until the walls are shaking so much that debris rains down onto Bucky and Steve. They’ve just managed to get themselves up when a loud explosion suddenly erupts in front of him, knocking them back into the same wall with such force that they’re knocked unconscious. Their bodies slowly slide down to the floor, and the last thing they hear is someone screaming their names.
There Is No Coming Back From This - Chapter 1
Characters: Stark!Reader, Steve Rogers, Tony Stark Summary: "It's her time, Tony. And I hate that as much as you do, but there's some things you can't fix. There is no coming back from this."
AN: So this story is just a smidge old, but I'm just now getting to update and crosspost it. Hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
Steve catches Tony as he rushes back to his lab, a sleek, gunmetal case in his hand. "Tony."
"Tony," he calls again.
Tony barely acknowledges Steve. "I'm busy, Rogers."
"What's in the case, Tony?" Steve follows right on Tony's heels, watching as Tony storms through the door of his lab. Steve flings the door open to reveal a frantic Tony rummaging through his drawers. "Don't do this, Tony. Don't do whatever it is you're about to do. This isn't what she would want."
Tony whips around to his former friend. "You don't get to tell me what she would want - I'm her father. I need to protect her. I can - I can protect her from this."
Steve looks on with remorse, offering only a slight shake of his head. "It's her time, Tony. She's tired. She wants to rest."
"Don't give me that," Tony snaps, chucking the wrench in his hand. "I can fix this!"
"It's her time, Tony. And I hate that as much as you do, but there's some things you can't fix."
--
Tony Stark worked his entire life keeping you from the public eye - practically an impossible feat as a Stark, the sole heir to the Stark empire and fortune.
He worked tirelessly to protect you from the world. To protect you from his own mistakes. To make sure you'd never pay for his sins.
And while he was off fighting those highly publicized battles with the Avengers, you fought your own quiet, personal batter. Leukemia. First as a child and later many years spent in remission. And for the first time in his life, Tony Stark had to grapple with something he couldn't protect you from. He swallowed the most bitter pill, day in and out, waiting helplessly with bated breath.
It was in the middle of his feud with Steve that Tony got the call. He wasn't sure that he'd ever forgive himself for the events of that day.
The first missed call came from Pepper, right in the middle of a very intense argument with Steve and Bucky in Siberia. He declined the call and told FRIDAY to let Pepper know he was busy.
The second call was from Pepper again. FRIDAY said it was urgent. To be fair, it didn't really seem like there was anything more important than finding out Steve lied about his parent's death.
The third and fourth time, both from Pepper and Happy, he was too busy searching for vengeance to think straight.
Five calls later, he was on the ground, nursing both a wounded pride and actual wounds. That final call, Pepper told FRIDAY not just to relay the urgency, but to tell Tony it was about you.
He couldn't remember anything except a faint ringing in his ears and dread sitting in the pit of his stomach. It was a whirlwind until he sat in your hospital room, at your bedside.
You didn't remember it like that. You remembered him moving Heaven and Earth to make it back to you. You would never forget how he dropped everything and rushed to your side. There was nothing that mattered more than your father holding your hand as the doctors handed you your bleak prognosis, handed you your death sentence.
Anger and despair flashed in his eyes when the doctor spoke. He pulled you out of the hospital that same day, putting you under his own care. He declared that same day, you would live. He would fix this.
He put all his focus into fixing you. There was nothing else that held the attention of Tony Stark. Nothing seemed quite as important as keeping you alive. Between him, Bruce, and Dr. Cho, there was someone constantly working on keeping you alive.
No one could deny that it was looking bad. The doctors said months, and the months had come and gone.
Tony could barely look at you without bawling. Not in front of you, of course. He'd rush out of the room, storm over to his lab. Sometimes, he'd throw things. Other times, he would fall into his chair and shed silent tears.
While no one dared utter the words to you, you knew it had gone from bleak to practically hopeless.
You knew you were really on your last days when you saw Bruce watching you, holding your hand while you slept.
To you, Bruce was something of a mentor, a second father even. Though you inherited all of the infamous Stark genius, you'd stopped attending school during your first battle with cancer. Tony often joked that there were no better teachers than two of the greatest scientists in the world. During that first fight, Bruce was the one who would wheel you into the lab so you could learn and watch as he worked.
There was not a single doubt in your mind that you were hanging on by a thread when you saw Bruce's glassy eyes watching you drift in and out of consciousness.
"Please don't cry, Bruce," you whisper, speaking through your oxygen mask.
"I'm not crying," he assures you, wiping the corner of his eyes. "Just allergies."
"I've had a good life," you meekly offer, lifting up your oxygen mask. "Not everyone gets Bruce Banner and Tony Stark to homeschool them."
"It - it was an honor." He stops speaking for a moment as his voice breaks on his last word. "I just - I want you to know that you've always been like a daughter to me."
You know how hard it is for Bruce to say that, that the vulnerability isn't something that he would normally offer unless he felt like he had to. "Bruce, are you telling me that I have two dads?"
He huffs out a chuckle, shaking his head at you, "That infallible sense of humor. It's admirable."
"Bruce?" His gaze meets yours. "Don't let my dad tear himself apart - after, I mean. It's not anyone's fault. Yours or his. Can you - just make sure he knows that."
"Don't talk like that. We can still-"
"Bruce." You stop him from continuing the same unfounded hope they held onto for all these months. You shake your head, unshed tears shining in your eyes as you picture Tony after the inevitable happens. "It's okay. We both know what's gonna happen and it's - it's okay. I'll be okay. Just take care of him, okay?"
The knot in Bruce's throat is so tight he just shakily exhales and nods.
The final sign that things aren't going well: Steve Rogers is allowed to step foot back on the Avengers Compound. Though allowed might be too generous of a word. You're not sure if it's the medication, your fluctuating state of consciousness, or simply everyone's unwillingness to tell you anything, but he's back.
And while no one would say it, you all know he's come to say goodbye.
Steve can barely bring himself to say a word to you.
The last time he saw you, you were fine, you were perfectly healthy. He didn't even know you were sick again until he heard it from the news, which only offered vague details mostly revolving around Tony pulling out of events and almost entirely retreating from the public eye.
He knew the secrecy and vague details were for a reason - mostly because of Tony's overprotectiveness. He'd only heard the story from Pepper, but according to her, Tony saw one article implying that he deserved what happened to you, that somehow you were paying for his karmic debts. One nasty story was all it took. The very next day, he bought the newspaper and shut them down, effectively sending a message to all media outlets that you were completely and totally off limits.
The only thing that Steve heard was that your health was once again failing and Tony was taking personal time in the midst of the Accords drama to support you.
And he wasn't here for you. And he’s not quite sure how he’ll ever forgive himself for that.
Against all advice and reason, he risks it all to be there for you - one last time.
He mostly sits with you, constantly asking if you need anything or if there's anything he can do for you. With most of your time spent asleep, Steve finds himself whispering apologies over and over while he strokes your hair and holds your hand.
And Peter, the newest member of the team, well, he dials back on his Spiderman antics and heroics. At school, at home, anywhere he can't be by your side, he's anxious, dread swimming in his veins, worried that any minute he's going to get that call. That dreaded call. He's thought about it before. He's not sure who the call will come from, his Aunt May, Tony, Happy even. He's not quite sure. He's just always worried. So worried that every time his phone rings, he flinches in fear.
After school, he's only suited up for an hour or two at most before he rushes down to the Compound. No one believed him when he first said he met Tony Stark's daughter through his internship, let alone when you started dating.
Every day, he took it upon himself to keep you entertained. Sometimes, he'd just talk, about anything, about everything, his friends, his aunt, his school, his hero antics. You liked listening to his seemingly endless stories. He did everything and anything he could to keep you smiling.
And when it looks like it's going to be your last night on the Earth, he arrives to the Compound like he would any other day, prepared to take your mind off the heaviness of it all.
He bursts down the hallway, barely pulling off his Spiderman suit as he barrels toward your open door, "You will never guess what I found." He falters when he sees Tony standing in the doorway, blocking you from his sight. "Mr. Stark?"
"Hey, kid."
Panic bubbles up inside him. Maybe it wouldn't be a call. Maybe it would be exactly like this. "Is everything - is she-?
"She's fine," Tony quickly assures. It's not really what he means. You weren't fine. Not in the slightest. "She's been in and out all day."
"What happened?"
"An infection. She's had a fever all day."
Peter's voice breaks as he descends into despair. "But she'll - she's gonna be okay, right?"
Tony rests a hand on Peter's shoulder, giving him a comforting squeeze, "She's just not strong enough to fight it off."
Peter looks up at him with desperate hope shining in his pleading eyes. "But you're gonna try, right? You're gonna try to fight it off?"
The brokenness of Peter's voice steels Tony's resolve. Not just for him. For Peter. For Bruce. For Pepper. For Steve. They couldn't lose you. "Yeah, kid, I'm going to try."
Peter stays by your side, holding your hand until the bitter end.
Your fever is so high that you find it hard to keep your eyes open. Despite all best efforts, no one is able to break it and it shows no signs of wavering.
And that's when Steve finds out Tony's plan. Or more accurately, when the guilt eating Bruce alive forces him to tell Steve the truth. When all hope is lost, Steve sees just how desperate Tony is to save you.
After all, that's what people mean when they say desperate times call for desperate measures.
But not even Steve could have predicted just how far Tony would be willing to go.
"What?" Steve demands.
"He's been working on it, Steve. I didn't - no one thought he'd actually do it."
"And what exactly is it?"
"He got the idea when you came back," Bruce explains. "He remembered your files, how sick you were, how you were better afterwards. He took the Teseract, Steve, he was talking about using that as his radiation source. I think he's really going to do this."
"Do what?" Steve grits out.
"He's going to dose her with the serum. An untested super solider serum. He thought it would buy him time - even - even if it didn't fix her, it would give him time. I told him there were boundaries even science shouldn't cross, but he won't listen. Not to me. Not to Pepper. But you have to try, I promised the kid I wouldn't let him fall apart."
"Clearly he's already fallen apart if he's actually considering doing this."
"I want to save her as much as he does, but this isn't how she would want to be saved. I think we both know that."
"Where is he?"
"He went to find Pepper. Then he was going to her room."
Tony clenches his jaw and walks into your room. You're asleep and Peter's asleep with his head resting on your lap. He'd be the first to admit that he didn't like this at first, but he has to give credit to Peter for sticking with you. You genuinely seemed happier with him. Your eyes slowly wake to see your father on the verge of tears. You reach out, giving his hand a weak squeeze. "It's okay, Dad. I've had a good life."
One hand hold your burning hand, the other rubs his clenched jaw. He nods as you drift back out of consciousness. The moment you do, he bristles out of the room. He's content to know he's not leaving you alone.
Steve catches Tony as he rushes back to his lab, a sleek, gunmetal case in his hand. "Tony."
"Tony," he calls again.
Tony barely acknowledges Steve. "I'm busy, Rogers."
"What's in the case, Tony?" Steve follows right on Tony's heels, watching as Tony storms through the door of his lab. Steve flings the door open to reveal a frantic Tony rummaging through his drawers. "Don't do this, Tony. Don't do whatever it is you're about to do. This isn't what she would want."
Tony whips around to his former friend. "You don't get to tell me what she would want - I'm her father. I need to protect her. I can - I can protect her from this."
Steve looks on with remorse, offering only a slight shake of his head. "It's her time, Tony. She's tired. She wants to rest."
"Don't give me that," Tony snaps, chucking the wrench in his hand. "I can fix this!"
"It's her time, Tony. And I hate that as much as you do, but there's some things you can't fix."
"She calls you Uncle Steve," Tony quietly reminds him, standing before Steve with a white knuckle grip on the case and a vial of that familiar blue serum in his hand. “She was absolutely devastated when you all left.”
"Don't do that."
"Don't do what?” Tony rhetorically asks. “Remind you that you've known my daughter since she was 5. Remind you that to her, you were family. And now you're okay with letting her die?"
"I'm not okay with it," Steve barks. "I'm not okay with it. I love that kid, so stop trying to guilt me into thinking that any of this is okay because it's not. You're playing with things that shouldn't be played with, Tony. There's no coming back from this."
"A little hypocritical coming from a 100 year old man, don't you think?" Steve is about to respond, but Tony cuts him off again, speaking with tears burning in his eyes. "In fact, everyone here is living on borrowed time, why can't she? Why does she have to be the one to go? We've all escaped death, plenty of times. Why does she have to die at 17 years old?"
Steve softly exhales, "Tony..."
"She's 17, Rogers. 17 years! That's all she's had. 17 years," he repeats, his voice breaking. "She hasn't even had a chance to live yet. She hasn't - she hasn't done anything wrong. She'll never turn 18. She'll never get to walk down the aisle. She'll never have a family. She'll never get to live her own life. You and me? We've both got blood on our hands. We've made mistakes. We can say we've lived. She can't. She didn't even get a chance and you don't want me to even try to save her?"
"This isn't how you save someone."
"She's just a kid, Steve," Tony whispers, clenching the vial in his hand. "I have to, Cap. Sorry."
When Tony reenters your room, Peter's still gently snoring on your lap and you're sleeping. He can tell it's not a restful sleep, you're still sweating profusely, your hair is clinging to your forehead and your head lolls back and forth. Your breathing sounds so labored that it's downright painful. With another wave of determination, he sets everything up and pushes some more pain medication.
“Mr. Stark, is everything okay?” Peter drowsily asks, lifting his head slightly.
“Yeah, she’ll be fine," Tony says, avoiding actually answering Peter's question. "Why don’t you take a nap in the guest room next door? I’ll stay with her.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah, go ahead.”
“Alright,” Peter nods, reluctantly leaving the room.
Tony sighs again, telling himself that he's giving you more time, more life. All he needed was more time. All you need was more life.
Steve, Bruce, even Pepper, they're all wrong. This is the right thing to do. He's sure of it.
He glances back at the locked door, keeping everyone and anyone out, glances at the blue vial in his hand, and then at you. He can't let this happen to you, so he pushes the syringe.
When you open your eyes hours later, you're thrown for a loop. You're not quite sure how you're still here. You were sure that you were a goner. It certainly doesn't feel that way anymore. Your eyes flicker to Tony as he stands watching your every movement. "Dad?"
He refuses to meet your eye, and you immediately know something is wrong. Even more so when he doesn't utter a word, because if there's anything you've learned in your life, it's that your father always has something to say. "Dad?"
"I'm sorry." He reaches for your hand, squeezing it gently. "I couldn't - I couldn't let you die."
"Dad? What did you do?"
He embraces you, whispering, "I'm sorry."
'Such Sweet Revenge' by ali_aliska
https://archiveofourown.org/works/15146219/chapters/35123417
This is one of the best fanfictions I've ever read. ali_aliska is one of the best WinterIron/Marvel fanfiction writers ever.
As always, all credit goes to ali_aliska. I OWN NOTHING. THIS IS NOT MY WORK!!!!
I am just premoting it because it is so, so good!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Author's Summary:
When the Rogues are back in the States after being pardoned, the New Avengers want nothing to do with them and as far as Tony is concerned, if he never speaks to them again, it'll be too soon. After all, he didn't spend the last year putting himself (and his family) back together only for his former co-workers to ruin all of his hard work.
But then he gets a hand-written letter from the Winter Soldier himself, apologizing for the events that transpired and an off-handed comment from Rhodey about Rogers failing to take care of an obviously miserable Bucky Barnes sets in motion Tony's new, oh-so-evil plan to get some payback.
After all, what better revenge than to steal the Winter Soldier away from his best friend?
The only problem: Tony sucks at being vengeful, but apparently he's an expert at inadvertently falling in love.
Excerpt from chapter 1:
Tony admired the bright doodles of Iron Man, Spider-Man, and a very Picasso-esque rendition of the Wasp one last time and placed the last letter on top of new pile next to him. With nothing else left to read, he studied the damn white envelope still sitting innocuously on the other end of the bed.
He should burn it. He should take the damn thing down to the lab and burn it in the incinerator, scatter the ashes from the top of Stark Tower, and maybe invoke Loki’s name in an incantation or something. Tony was not ashamed to admit that he was petty enough to sic the Trickster god on Rogers.
He should do all those things, but already he resigned himself to the fact that curiosity would get the best of him. It was both one of his best and most reckless personality traits.
Kudos to Rogers for using snail mail (again) to get a direct line of communication to Tony.
Alright, let’s see what kind of half-assed apologies and passive aggressive nonsense he came up with this time. At least there’s no insulting, out-of-date tech to go along with this letter.
He reached for the envelope, tore it open, unfolded the paper, and promptly realized that this wasn’t Rogers’ tidy scrawl (he hated that he had the man’s handwriting memorized). A glance at signature towards the bottom of the letter confirmed his suspicions.
Huh.
With a raised eyebrow and renewed curiosity, Tony leaned back and began to read.
Mr. Stark,
I wasn’t sure this letter would get to you, but I had to try. I thought about meeting you in person (you’re too easy to track down for someone of your importance), but that would have been both imposing and selfish.
Even this is selfish. I know no apology will fix what I’ve done. It won’t bring your parents back, it won’t bring anyone I killed back to life. It won’t fix what happened between you, Steve and the others either. Might not help you at all, so this apology, it’s selfish then, isn’t it? Just to help me sleep better at night. If it makes a difference, I still won’t be able to sleep.
But for whatever it’s worth, I am sorry. I’m so sorry. For your parents, for fighting you in Germany without knowing anymore than what Steve had told me. I’m sorry for fighting you in Siberia, for leaving you behind when you were hurt.
I wish you would’ve taken more than just my arm back in that bunker.
I’m not sure if there’s something I can do to make up for what happened. I don’t have money and most of my skillsets are frowned upon, but if there is any way I can help, or if you just want to shoot me between the eyes to even out the score, just say so.
Being back in the States, I’ve had a lot of time to think. Can’t sleep with that damn witch across the hall, so I got nothing but time. I made mistakes, hurt people who weren’t my enemies. First time I was free of Hydra’s control and all I did was do more damage.
I’ve been reading up on your work. Green energy, technology, the new Accords. All of you are doing amazing work and I’m sorry Steve and the others are getting in the way of that. They shouldn’t have ambushed Rhodes and Danvers like that. A damn charity event for sick kids. I don’t know what they were thinking. Rhodes and Danvers held their own though. Soldiers through and through.
Steve is also thinking about coming to that green energy conference next month. Thinks he can get a moment with you because you’re one of the speakers and the security isn’t as strict. No idea if this letter gets to you in time, and knowing you, you probably already know, but thought I should warn you.
They used some of your tech to help with the triggers, by the way. Thank you for that too. T’Challa’s sister didn’t want to be involved though and I don’t blame her, but the other doctors did well enough with the tech. My brain feels like it’s been scrubbed raw, but at least some lunatic won’t be able to control me anymore. Thank you for giving me that freedom. Again, I have nothing to give back but empty words.
You seem like a good man. I wish I got the chance to know you under different circumstances, but I guess that’s selfish too.
Wherever life takes you, I wish you well.
Sincerely,
James Buchanan Barnes
“Huh…” Tony exhaled and kept staring at the letter in his hands.
Not what I expected. At all.
Early in July 2016
 Kathleen felt desperate. She had to find a way to get Wanda out of the raft; she was sure that Fury already knew about the situation. However, she had to tell Pietro what was going on...
She hadn't told Wanda anything yet, but they kept watching for his safety.
She couldn't open a portal to get her out of there; her powers wouldn't work. She had heard about the Raft. However, she knew that mutant detention centers were much worse. Well, Steve wanted to get everyone out. She didn't think to oppose it. Since the only thing she cared about was her best friend, she wouldn't lose her again. They had several places where they could stay, but she knew Wanda would want to be with Vision. While Kath had to fix her situation with Steve, they would still find a safe place.
Tumblr media
At that point, Bucky was insisting to Steve that he should fix things with Kathleen; at least something had to come out of what was happening. After that, they could try to fix everything, although surely some things would not be possible. Maybe there was still a place in the world where they could live quietly.
Tumblr media
"Chase, Alex, please tell me if there is any way to get into that prison," Kath stared at them. She hoped they would answer her. Of course, even if she used her powers, she couldn't make the ghosts talk.
"Of course, there is, you just have to think clearly," Nico's ghost said behind her. Kath turned to see her friend.
"Magic, it's most likely not magic-proof," Kath replied, with her eyes shining.
Chase finally spoke, "There's another, easier way, and you're the only one outside who can contact them."
"What? Clearly, I can't tell Fury... THE ALGORITHM! " Kathleen opened her eyes excitedly. How could she have forgotten it? ".Are you sure that will do it?"
"You know perfectly well the scope of the algorithm," Alex reminded her.
Kath nodded. She sat while watching the vegetation of the place and thought about the only thing that could be somewhat difficult would be to get to where she had access, although using her powers could prevent Steve and Bucky from noticing. She started devising a plan. She was going to get Wanda out of that horrible place. They had had enough. She had lost so many friends that she couldn't let something happen to the twins, and then she would worry about what she had to do with Steve and her.
"Kath?" Steve called her, and she was startled.
Is something wrong? Does Bucky have problems again? "
"No, he's fine. Well, he's not right, but he already told me everything that happened." Steve said, "He shut up for a few seconds and swallowed hard." However, Bucky was right, he had to fix the situation with his fiancée... or maybe she didn't want to marry him anymore. She didn't know what was going to happen yet. "Kath, doll, what happened a few days ago at the airport is a misunderstanding."
"She kissed you. I know, there's no need for you to give me some explanation, Steve." Maybe at that time or when we were leaving that base in Siberia... I lost my mind, so many things have happened, Wanda needs me. "
Is everything okay between us? Do you still want to marry me? " Steve questioned fearfully. He wasn't sure what would happen next, and with the current situation, maybe she wanted to have a "quieter" life.
It's all good. "Yes, we're still getting married, but first I have to get Wanda out of the raft before she gets taken to some mutant detention center and finds a way to fix this."
"I know where they are; that's where they wanted to send us." Actually, we have to devise a plan to enter that prison and release them, but without releasing dangerous criminals," Steve imagined.
"Trust me, I know what to do," Kathy said. Steve raised his eyebrows, but he didn't have much choice either, especially since he didn't want to do or say something to make her angry. He didn't want to ruin everything again.
"Okay, but we must hurry. Maybe we have to stay for a while in Wakanda. "
"In Wakanda?" "I don't think it's a good idea. In the end, they also signed the Accords. We don't know who we can trust or not," she interrupted him.
It will only be a couple of days, I promise you. I assure you that they will not be able to enter easily and it will be difficult for them to find us. "Steve took his hand and put the ring back on, which he had put away after their fight.” She looked at the jewel for a few seconds and smiled. "Are you okay?"
"I am, I was just thinking about how hypocritical Stark is, you will see that if he and Pepper have a baby and is a mutant, he will do everything possible to break the Accords or have them modified or something in his favor. It was also a big mistake that he meddled in this to that spider-child, Stark has condemned him, you too, the whole team, and his friends. Mutants are damned, this seems like a nightmare again, I hope that one day we will find the tranquillity we deserve. Ross and everyone who signed has made a big mistake, the day they need us, it will be too late; the only good thing is that they will have to take responsibility for what goes wrong."
"How do you know that? Did you have any premonitions? " Steve questioned whether he was interested in what his fiancée said; maybe he could use it to his advantage to fix the situation.
"No, Stevie, I didn't have any premonition this time. I would have liked to have had it. I would have looked for a way to prevent all this from happening and we would have continued with the plans we had. Everything would have remained the same." What I said is from my own experience. I have lost many people. Sometimes you had to flee; you were on the ice when all that happened, but ask Wanda about our childhood and maybe you will understand. "
"I have something else to confess to you," Steve sighed. "I sent Tony a mobile phone that it can't intervene, so he can contact me in case of emergency."
Kath let out a mocking chuckle upon hearing it. "If he calls you, it will be too late, his pride doesn’t allow him to see how wrong he is, but that does not matter now."
"You're right, we have to get them out of that place, we go to Bucky to tell him the plan," Steve took her hand to help her up, they walked, but before they went in, he stopped and kissed her.
Post CA:CW Fix It Stony Fanfics
Making Amends by TheseStoriesAreWrittenOnMyHeart
Summary: Everything about them happened in seconds. Their first meeting was quick, with Tony landing next to the Captain, each man giving a curt nod and name in greeting. Their argument on the hellicarrier took mere seconds to escalate. Until Steve was goading Tony into putting on the suit and going a few rounds and Tony not so subtly reminding Steve that he wasn’t afraid to hit an old man. It was only seconds of staring at Tony on that New York City Street, his arc reactor dark, no rise and fall of his chest, for Steve to know that inside the tin can, was a good man. Then Ultron happened, and it took seconds for their world to change, seconds for Steve to throw his shield at Tony and for the billionaire to send a repulsor blast back. They went from laughing and relaxing to standing on an edge thousands of feet above solid ground. And now…now everything’s changed. And all it took was a combination of seconds; of decisions made, actions performed and words spoken that they couldn’t get back. Just a few ticks of the clock for their world to shatter.
It’ll take more than that to make things right.
Note: This one deals with amending the accords. It is about how the avengers pick up after the civil war and how they learn to be friends again. It is an incredibly detailed and well written piece! Also, NO TEAM CAP OR TEAM IRON MAN BASHING. I was only supposed to re-read a few chapters to recall the story and give a few-word review but I ended up re-reading the whole goddamn thing. It’s a masterpiece.
maybe love is the reason why (we're seeing it eye to eye) by parkrstark
Summary: "I'm sorry. Repeat that again." Tony leaned forward in his seat from across the table. He even stuck a finger in his ear as if he was cleaning it out. "I don't think I heard you right."
Fury rolled his eyes-- or well, eye. "You and Rogers need to go undercover as a married couple in a community out on Long Island."
--
After Civil War, Tony and Steve are sent on an undercover mission as a couple to try and find Hydra informants. Somehow, they end up with Peter as their undercover son who decides to play matchmaker even if the two of them are doing their best to ignore their feelings after Siberia.
Note: My latest Fix It read! It just completed today. This fic is a phenomenal read, with its fake relationship, superfamily, undercover, and sexual tension elements! A definite 1000/10!
and this is the map of my heart by CydSA
Summary: The Avengers are splintered - spread out across the world.
There are many things to regret. The biggest one is what could have been.
Tony refuses to have any more regrets. Steve realizes that perhaps he made the wrong choice.
It starts from here....
Note: Here is some sweet, sweet, Civil War Fix It. It dwells deep into the Accords, how Tony fixes it, and the downfall of Ross.
floating point exception by ooka
There is something, he knows, to see a man as mortal. To see his fault lines and jagged edges instead of the smooth surface they present. Most people don’t like the illusion, whether it be good or not. They don’t want people like him to be human.
But that’s what he is, under the suit and the smile and the sunglasses. Under the bravo and the quick grins. He’s just a man, trying to hide his broken pieces, the dents in his heart, the washed out color of his soul. He’s just a man, trying to solve problems and make the world better. That’s why he’s Ironman, just a man in a suit. Nothing extra.
The place where the arc reactor used to rest in his chest aches so fiercely for a moment that Tony can’t breathe.
He takes in a few breaths and does what Tony does best - pushes it down and goes to work.
(Tony, after the Civil War. Post CA:CW)
Note: A 150k+ fanfic that is centered on Tony, his issues, and his struggles. PREPARE TO CRY.
Not Enough Scotch for this Matchmaking Scheme by desolateice:
Summary:  After Civil War and a lot of healing the Avengers are fed up with the stubborn silence between Steve and Tony and try to take things in their own hands.
Note: A Fix It where the ‘kids’ play matchmaker to bring their fighting ‘parents’ back together!
Never Eye To Eye by vorkosigan for mrsgingles
Summary: After the Civli War, the Avengers were back together.
How is everything going, Tony? Pepper had asked in her email. It's fine (Tony had written back). I'm fighting with Steve all the time. Everything is going to hell. I'm okay (you know I'm always okay).
(Or: How Tony and Steve learned to be a bit gentler with each other)
Note: A 26k+ fic where Steve and Tony learned how to be friends again, and more. It deals with the struggles and frustrations they had just to salvage their friendship.
Fly One More Time (Alternately Titled--The Phoenix) by RavenLost2187
Summary: Steve couldn't see them before.
But then he woke up and there they were.
There's a small problem though.
One of his teammates doesn't have wings like he should.
And that's Tony Stark
Note: Some winged fics anyone? This has a bit of a Team as Family element and not to mention that glorious Civil War fix it theme!
What it’s worth by masterlokisev159
Summary:  Tony's scent is off. Wanda realizes why.
Note: Here is a Hurt and Comfort fic for you with a dash ABO elements in it!
Sunrise Over the End of the World by Sapphic_Futurist
Summary: When Dr. Strange arrives at an Accords Committee Meeting and warns of the coming of an alien megalomaniac set on destroying the world, the Rogues are pardoned and Tony finds himself exactly where he never wanted to be. Back at the Compound with Steve, who still can't take a hint and won't leave him alone.
--
In which Tony is broken and Steve finds redemption.
Note: A Bad case of Tony acting like nothing happened and doing his goddamn best to avoid Steve. It’ll work all out in the end. Well, it will get worst first before that though..
We stand together (or not at all) by Jana_C
Summary:  It’s so easy to hate this man, so painfully easy. He’s the embodiment of rich, white male privilege. He’s irritatingly arrogant, and he doesn’t always think before acting, and even when he does, he manages to twist his logic around and shape it into something that will always benefit him, and yet, here he is, building the guy who killed his parents an arm, without having been asked; working his way through diplomacy and politics, even though he hates it with every fiber of his being, just so he can correct the mistakes all of them made. She watches him go and sighs, small and tired, before texting a single line to Steve. Get ready to come home.
Note: Anyone up for some Tony Whump and Appreciation fanfic?
You Don’t Only Get One Shot by janonny
Summary: In which Tony voluntarily carries a tracker around, and learns how to talk to Steve all over again in-between and during kidnapping attempts.
“Leave you alone for two months, and you have an operation all set up to track wayward Hydra cells and rescue innocent billionaires,” Tony said, his tone skating the line of annoyance and admiration.
Note: a dose of Stalkerish!Steve (but not in an entirely creepy way because he just wants to keep Tony safe dammit).
You've Got A Sister Now by ZaraMelMercury
Summary: It's been a year since the events of the Avengers' Civil War. Tony Stark is trying to pick up the pieces of his life, while juggling his work, his remaining friendships, getting therapy sessions for Rhodey and dealing with government politics, as well as the Accords.
It is a bit rough, but he's got Pepper (always a steady rock by his side), Rhodey, Happy and the Kid- Peter Parker. Tony would never admit to it up front and center, but you could always catch a proud look on the man's face whenever the young Spiderling was mentioned!
Life seemed to be looking up...
Except for one, minor detail:
Steve Rogers.
The hope for one reconciliation, surprisingly, led to another!
A new bond that would form that Tony would ultimately always be thankful for.
"Oh, I wanna take it back!... " "No, no, no, you can't retract it!"
Who would've thought it?
Tony Stark has a sister looking out for him, after all.
Note: Here are some Tony and Nat friendship for you! This one isn’t exactly a solid fix it but one with a more of hopeful ending.
The Bro Code by Sullen
Summary: In a world where the Winter Soldier is found years earlier and is named Tony’s godfather, Zemo plays a different R-rated video and Siberia goes a little differently.Or –Steve breaks the bro code.
Note: This is just too cute and wholesome not to include.
WIP
Used to be Mine by Fangirlingmanaged
Tony can't even recognize himself nowadays.
Note: This one certainly deserves a place at the heavy angst category because that’s what it is. HEAVY ANGST AND HEARTBREAK.
What if...Tony won in Siberia?: a fic rec list
Do you like angst? Do you like hurt without comfort? Do you ever watch Captain America: Civil War and think "I wish this was way sadder?" Then I have got some stories for you! They all look at what would have happened if Steve and/or Bucky had been killed in the final Siberia fight.
Notes and warnings:
Everything is Team Cap-friendly, so long as your definition of "friendly" includes hurting the fictional characters you love.
Major character death and/or graphic violence warnings for everything.
Tony's depiction in these varies from being a sympathetic character who made a tragic mistake to an out-and-out villain.
No Light, Dead End;
full masterlist
Pairings: Steve Rogers x female!reader
Word count: 2,812
Warning: SMUT!!!! slight dub-con. slight dark!steve but with feelingsᵀᴹ.
Summary: takes place after civil war and before infinity war because who is she? we don’t know her. after the avengers were divided due to the accords, you went on the run with steve, natasha and sam. during on the run, your relationship with steve had been going through a rough patch until one day, you decided to leave him. but he made sure that you knew who you belong to.
a/n: this one is for @mariessecretfantasies‘ 500 follower writing challenge! i chose prompt #8 ““No light, no light in your bright blue eyes. I never knew daylight could be so violent.” No Light, No Light- Florence + the Machine” i wanted to write something anguish but with a hint of darkness, just enough to spice it up. cause we all love possessive, slightly crazy steve, right? 😌 please leave a like & comment! enjoy.
Tumblr media
You stormed into the bedroom and slammed the door behind you. You just had another quarrel with your grouchy boyfriend, Steve. He wasn’t always like this though. He used to be the heroic face of America after all… Used to be. He was a man with perseverance, sagacity, and altruism. All his life, he wanted nothing but to help others. To serve his country. But all that changed since the Accords.
The whole country decided to turn its back on their favorite golden boy aka Captain America. The man they used to look up to and call out for when miscreants exterminated the city and when aliens invaded the planet.
He was a man with assertive morals, never doubting his purpose and his will. And the whole world agreed. Until his best friend, Bucky Barnes was accused of the bombing of the UN in Vienna and was shortly located where he had been hiding for the past couple of years.
Steve Rogers had faith in his former best friend who could barely remember him when he said that he wasn’t the one who committed the crime. But the whole country didn’t. And so, through all the battle at the airport in Germany, and the unauthorized flight to Siberia and the grievous alteration of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to a group of wanted felons, you stuck and stayed with him.
You had faith in the man you fell in love with a year ago and you knew his true heart. That deep down, no matter what the world paints him to be, you will always believe that he was still the same selfless hero. A battered soldier with nothing but pure intentions. He had lost so much in his stolen lifetime, so you understood his desperate wish to keep his best friend alive and out of heavily guarded prison.
And so, after the final battle with Tony Stark in Siberia, Steve and Bucky agreed that it would be best for everyone if Bucky went back to cryostasis chamber until Princess Shuri finds a way to fix him. King T’Challa had made peace with the fact that Zemo was the one who murdered his father, and he realized that Bucky was only a victim just as much as T’Chaka was, so he allowed him to stay in their land and agreed to mend the broken man.
After Bucky was back under the ice, Steve went back to The Raft and reunited with Sam, Wanda, Scott, and Clint, releasing them out of the Arctic prison facility. Whilst, Wanda and Vision agreed to lay low and started a secret life together in Scotland, Clint and Scott went back to their residents under prohibition.
You, Steve, Natasha, and Sam on the other hand, went on a run, as a group of uncivilized nomads, living in crummy motels and working vigilante jobs in the dark. You changed your looks and camouflaged within the crowds. And this was the turning point.
Your relationship with Steve hadn’t been the same since the fallout. He became rougher around the edges, sterner, and crueler. Some days, you couldn’t even remember what his genuine smile looked like anymore. How his eyes used to gleam so brightly, you could see your lucid reflection on them. How he’d hold you so tightly, you felt nothing but his warmth after he passionately made love to you for hours.
How did you get here? You had lost count of how many times you had fought with Steve Rogers. Small sparks of fire growing into a massive one, burning the entire house down. You could feel the heat all over the room when his voice roars so loud and your words cracked through your lips due to the unwanted tears threatening to fall.
Hurtful words were tossed, if the walls could talk, they’d tell you the lunacy that echoed night and day when you and Steve are going at it. You two were crazy, mad people in love. Or at least you used to be. Not only him who changed after the Accords, but so did you. You became more reticent, more practical, and more indignant.
Whenever you were on stealthy missions, Steve would always order you around like you were nothing but a fellow soldier. He’d talk down on you like there was no history between you when you disagree with him. Whenever you made the slightest mistake, he’d deprecate you like you were a delinquent, untamed child.
Sam and Natasha were aware of the lingering tension in the room when you two were on bad terms, but they didn’t know how excruciating it could get behind closed doors. Whenever you stared into his electric blue eyes, you didn’t find the same vivacity or earnestness anymore. All you sensed was rage and darkness.
Darkness so steep and hollow, that sometimes you’d find yourself getting lost and trapped in them. Like he could devour you and crush you by a single fist of his palm. Deep down, you wanted to get your Steve back. The considerate and faithful man you fell in love with. The man who would bring you flowers from his morning run because they just reminded him of you. The man who would kiss your shoulders in the morning to gently wake you up, because he didn’t have the heart to disturb your peaceful state, but he needed to hear your voice.
Often times, you’d wonder if it was still possible to go back to the way you used to be. But he had been so hardened by the arduous circumstances now, that it sounds like a fairytale if you could go more than 5 minutes to have a decent conversation.
“Fuck you, Steve! You don’t fucking get to tell me what to do, you hear me?”
“Yes, I do! I’m your Captain. Watch your language.”
“I don’t fucking care. You are not the Captain anymore. You ungrateful asshole! I can’t believe I stuck with you after you became a criminal. You don’t fucking deserve it. You don’t fucking deserve me.”
“What are you gonna do, sweetheart? You’re gonna run back to the compound and sign the Accords? Well, guess what? The first thing they’re gonna do as soon as you show your pretty little face, is they’d cuff you up. And when they lock you up in the Raft, I’m not going back to save you ass.”
“I don’t fucking need you to. I’d rather be locked up in the middle of the Atlantic ocean rather than spending one more goddamn second with your grumpy, irritating ass.”
Tumblr media
He stayed silent. His back was to you now. His shoulder slumped as he leaned his hands on the table. He listened to your hasty movements as you stormed into the bedroom that you hadn’t shared in a while. Since you two had been at each other’s throats nearly every day, he’d sleep on the couch while you get the bed.
The truth is, Steve still loved you just as deeply. But things had changed, and he couldn’t pretend that everything was okay just because he was still madly in love with you. He had to be tougher now, he constantly had to watch his back. He couldn’t afford to be distracted even for just one second when the whole world was looking for him and the entire country wanted him penalized.
He also had to be hard on you, because you knew that if any of you let your guard down, you’d be doomed. You could be caught. Or worse, you could be killed. Not only the villains who wanted you dead now… Thaddeus Ross had made it clear that if it’s necessary, he wouldn’t hesitate on shooting any of you on sight.
So he tried to forget the man that he was, stripped himself out of the Captain America mantle, and lived as Nomad now. He was fine with that, although it took him a while to get used to the slummy hotel rooms or sometimes, abandoned safe houses. And Nomads don’t maintain a lovey-dovey relationship and kiss each other dearly while cleaning each other off in the shower.
No, Nomads creep in the shadow and have each other’s backs in combats. Even if it means one of them had to be the meaner guy. As long as his allies were safe and returned in one piece, then that’s all that matters. He couldn’t care any less if they no longer liked him as a comrade.
And the thought of losing you terrified the shit out of his soul. The kind that he couldn’t shake away because somewhere, deep down, he knew it was inevitable. This line of work didn’t promise him safety insurance. Literally and figuratively, now that he was no longer claimed by the government or the Avengers.
So if talking to you as if you were nothing but a fellow soldier will remind you that you both no longer had the luxury to plan your next date night or cuddle in the sheets at night to keep each other warm, then he was going to do what’s necessary.
He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t hear you pack up your bags and stepped out of the room with your travel bag in your shoulder. You didn’t have that many personal belongings anyway. When he stole the Quinjet, you couldn’t go back to the compound to pack up all of your stuff and say your farewell to the rest who stayed, so along the way, you bought just enough clothes to have something to wear other than your battle gear. So most of your things were left in the compound, just like the entire journey over 5 years with the Avengers.
Steve and you had said a lot of things neither of you really meant when things were heated up, but he could live with that as long as you were safe and he could keep an eye on you. He’d let you have your moment of tranquility, knowing that when daylight comes, you’ll have to fight another day and bleed.
He thought that tonight was just another night where you two claw each other’s skin but would act as if nothing happened last night in front of Sam and Natasha. You had threatened to leave more times than he could count but you never did it. Just like the rest of the things you said. Meaningless contempt.
But this time, you were out of your mind. You really could be such a force to be reckoned with sometimes. That’s why he fell in love with you in the first place, but it would often drive him crazy too. And not the good kind.
He turned around and saw you sprinting toward the door. You were dressed in all black; black jacket, black shirt, black jeans, and black sneakers. He was confused at what you were doing but he maintained his calm posture and stayed in the same spot where he had been standing, with his hands on his hips.
“Where the hell are you going?”
“I’m leaving. I can’t spend one more goddamn second with you. I’m done.”
Steve didn’t even try to hide his panic. He really thought you were joking or maybe you were going somewhere to calm your head, then you’d come back. But no, you were really leaving this time.
“Hey, hey! Don’t be fucking ridiculous. You are not going anywhere.”
“Yes, I am. And you can’t stop me.”
“Stop acting stupid and just calm down for a sec.” He reached out for you but you flinched, not wanting to hear any more of his bollocks.
“Get your fucking hands off me, Steve. Before I break every single one of your fingers.” You swatted his hand.
Suddenly, his demeanor changed. You saw it in his eyes, the flash of that shift. The one that you had been seeing a lot these days. The alteration from Steve Rogers to Captain America. Or more suitably, America’s Golden Boy to The Most Wanted Criminal. You’d be lying if you weren’t a tad frightened by that darkness in him, but you weren’t going to lay it out on your hands and present it to him. You were no coward.
Rest in peace, to your naive bravado… Your headlessness had backfired.
Steve slammed you into the wall behind you as he grabbed you by the throat, inching his face closer to yours. You could hear his labored breathing, sweeping on your skin, his eyes glared at you, locking you in place.
Your hands immediately went to his, trying to break free out of his tightening grip, cutting off your airway. “S-Steve…” You tried to get him off of you by striking his face, but he still wouldn’t relent. He immediately dragged you to the couch, as you nearly stumbled on your feet.
“You think you can just run and leave me? Stupid girl. Looks like you need a reminder of your place.”
“St- Steve! Stop!” As your back hit the couch. You tried to stand on your feet but was abruptly stopped by his hand on your shoulders, pushing you back down. “Shut the fuck up.” He grabbed your waist as he turned you around, so you were reclined on your chest. His hand immediately went to grab a fistful of your hair as he whispered into your ears, “you really wanna push my limits huh? Riling me up like a stupid little brat, thinking you can get away with it. Hell no. I’m gonna show you the consequences of your foolishness, little girl.”
Then he slammed you back down as he immediately pulled down your pants with your underwear along with it. You thrashed your body, trying to push him away but it was futile. Steve lifted up your hips, so you were standing on your knees. Then you felt a harsh smack on your ass, eliciting a raw yelp out of you. He did it once more, and more, and more, until your tears started to leak out of the corner of your eyes. You lost your ability to speak, trembling from the excruciating pain.
Just when you thought the torment was over, you heard the clank of his buckle as you instantly turned around to see what he was doing. The hastened glance was enough to verify your fear. You immediately pushed yourself on your hands and attempted to get up but you couldn’t as he quickly pushed you back down with his massive hand and held you there. His other hand went to his cock as he lined himself up to your entrance, intruding your body violently without any warning.
His hand that was on your back, went to your other hand along with the other, to pin them behind your back as strictly as a cuff. Then he began to drive his hips into you until he was fully seated. He groaned due to the pleasure. He slammed back into you and out. He repeated his motion until you couldn’t help but feel the tightening coil inside of you. He startled you in your hazy state with another spank on your ass. You squealed.
“I can feel your cunt tightening around me, little girl. See? I told you you could never leave me. You belong to me. Only I can make you feel this good.” He gritted between his vigorous thrusts. You couldn’t even focus on his mortifying words anymore when you could feel your climax was approaching. You were so close. A few more slams by his hips and then, you fell apart.
You moaned in pleasure as your release was prolonged by his still unrelenting thrusts, attempting to reach his own climax. You closed your eyes in bliss, as you could feel the fight in you had drained. You couldn’t think of anything else or remember the way you ended up being fucked hard on this couch. You were still lying in the same position, with your face pressed on the couch and hands restrained behind your back as you heard Steve groaned from behind you.
You could feel his warm cum unleashed deep inside you as Steve pushed a few shallow thrusts to deplete every drop of semen. When he was completely finished, he pulled out of you and unloose your wrists as he sat on the couch. You were paralyzed. Despite him not holding you down anymore, you still couldn’t find the energy or will in yourself to move or carry on with your plan.
You were too wearied to start any altercation anymore so you just laid there as your eyes started to droop. Before you were completely dazed out, a gravel voice whispered to you like the sound of the wind blowing; subtle but crystal. “I’m not done with you yet, babygirl. I’ve got all night to remind you who you belong to.”
You had met Tony Stark while you were studying at M.I.T after he caught wind of a new genius on the rise. He took you under his wing and the two of you became unstoppable. You helped him run Stark Industries until he approached you about a new idea. After everything had happened to him, he came to you about a suit of armor that would change the world.
While developing his suit, he knew he needed a partner. Someone who had his back no matter what was being thrown at him. He worked on a suit without your knowledge and when it was ready he revealed it to you. A suit of armor matching his, but... you sized. You were essentially a second Iron Man. He needed you with him while he was taking on this new job he had created for himself. Much to your dismay, the media had labeled you “Iron Woman” and you had to run with it.
When Tony was brought in by Nick Fury for the Avengers Initiative, his only condition was that you were brought in as well. You contributed just as much as Tony did and you would be a valuable asset to the team. When the rest of the team was brought together you had caught the eye of a certain blonde soldier. Steve had seen the way you worked and had an insane amount of respect for you. It wasn’t easy doing what you did. He had read about the woman working alongside Tony Stark and never imagined how amazing she is.
You were intelligent and compassionate. You were fearless and unapologetically you. He could go on and on about the kind of person you are. It took a special kind of a person to bring Steve out of the place he was in after coming back. He would call you in the middle of the night if he had a question he could not get out of his mind. You would be over at his apartment almost instantly with food and a laptop in hand, showing him whatever he wanted to know.
Those late nights became sleepovers on his couch when you were too tired to drive home. You loved the late nights with him. It was almost like he could put down the wall he always had up and you loved who he was behind it. You laughed like you’ve never laughed. You learned to love like you’ve never loved. Steve Rogers had your heart the moment he shook your hand and introduced himself to you, and he knew it.
It didn’t take long for you to start falling asleep in his bed rather than the couch. You would wake up with him wrapped around your body and you would melt right into him. He was never one for talking about his feelings but the very first morning he woke up to the soft snores escaping your lips he couldn’t hold it back anymore. You sat there listening to him ramble about feelings and love and when you couldn’t get him to relax you planted your lips on his. After that, you knew you would never let a day go by where you weren’t right there next to him.
You stood by him when S.H.I.E.L.D collapsed and his childhood best friend had risen from the dead and tried to kill him and his friends. You know better than anyone the love he had for Bucky Barnes. You had been there when Fury got into Steve’s apartment and told you both not to trust anyone. You took down the helicarriers with them and watched in horror as Steve went down with one. You were there with Sam as he woke up in the hospital. You held his hand feeling like if you let go you'd lose him again. He pressed kisses to your hand and rested it on his heart, reminding you he wasn't going anywhere and would be with you no matter what.
You stood by him through the accords, knowing the consequences it would have on the most important relationship in your life. You were also there when the news of Peggy’s death broke and held his hand during the whole service. You fought side by side in Germany, knowing what it would mean. You ran with him and Bucky to Siberia. You left Tony there on the ground in Siberia and you, abandoning someone who had been there for you for almost 10 years.
You held his hand when he had to say goodbye to Bucky again. He knew he could trust the Wakandans to fix Bucky and take out whatever Hydra put into his head, but it didn’t hurt any less. You were allowed to stay a couple of days in Wakanda to gather yourselves and prepare for the next mission. You had left your suit behind in Siberia, knowing Tony would have found you if you kept it. You had help from Shuri developing a new suit that wouldn’t be tracked and still had most of your design implements but with some upgraded technology. You held Steve as close as you could those few days, knowing what leaving was going to mean. Nothing you did was going to be safe, there were no guarantees anymore.
You were there with him while on the run before Thanos. Hopping around from country to country with Nat and Sam. You had been on the run for god knows how long and it wasn’t getting easier. But having Steve right there next to you made it just a little bit easier at the end of the day. You had your best friends with you through everything. Steve would hold you at night when you couldn’t sleep and you’d just think about if all of this was worth it. One night you asked Steve what he hoped he’d get out of this. He said he wanted to be able to hang up the Captain America suit and live a life he never thought he’d get. A life right here with you.
Watching you get dusted in Wakanda was the worst thing Steve had ever experienced. He stood there speechless watching Bucky’s gun fall to the ground, dust floating around it. You ran up to him and placed a hand on his as he grabbed the dust from the ground. You looked him in the eyes and just told him how much you loved him and that you were with him no matter what. You didn’t know if you were next or if he was, you just needed to make sure he knew. You told him you love him and just held on as you started to disappear. He shut his eyes as he felt your grip on him started to fade away and all he could do was whisper “I’m sorry”
The 5 years he had to live without you were the worst of his life. You were robbed of a life with him. Steve thinks about what he should’ve done differently. He should’ve just retired when the accords were drawn up. He should’ve taken retirement and built a life with you. A life you had always talked about getting. Taking a page out of Clint’s book and building you a house in the middle of nowhere and raising kids. You both talked about saying no to the accords, retiring and settling down somewhere. Leaving the superhero-ing to someone else. But you both knew to fight for something you believed in far outweighed your personal desires.
When Scott said he had a way to bring everyone back, to bring you back, Steve needed to do everything he could. He needed to get you back. During the time heist when they were sent to the battle of New York, Steve had forgotten about you being there. Seeing you again made his heart fall to the pit of his stomach and it took everything in him not to run up to you and never let you go. He needed this to work, he didn’t know what he would do if it didn’t.
Seeing you fly through the portals Dr. Strange created had stopped his heart. He saw your suit, he heard your voice through the coms. Standing next to Bucky and Sam as you dropped to the ground ready to fight, he knew he would never let you go again. You fought beside him like you had countless times before.
You dropped to the ground knowing the fight was over, seeing the armies get dusted right before you. Steve spotted the red and gold of your suit somewhere on top of the rubble, your head bowed and eyes shut. He made his way to you, a little unsure of what may happen. He crouched in front of you dropping the hammer he was now wielding. You looked up at the man before you, tears falling heart racing. He tackled you in a hug, burying his head in the crook of your neck as much as he could with the suit on. The first 2 words out of his mouth after 5 years without you were, “marry me”.
After all was said and done you and Steve refused to wait another moment before becoming husband and wife. Tony walked you down the aisle to the love of your life surrounded by the people who mattered most to you. You were met with Steve’s eyes with tears falling out of them. When you handed your bouquet to Natasha you brought your hand up to Steve’s face and wiped the tears. He placed his hand on top of yours and kissed the inside of your palm.
The ceremony was perfect. You stood there with Natasha by your side. Steve stood with Bucky by his side, something he never thought would be possible. After 5 years of nothing but pain and regret, everything was as it should be.
During the reception, you were sitting at a table by yourself playing with your rings and just looking around at all the excitement and joy. You spotted Steve standing at the bar with a beer in his hand and a laugh bubbling out of his chest, a sound you would never get tired of hearing. You looked back at your rings with a smile on your face.
“You did good, kid” Tony whispered. He came up behind you and placed a hand on your shoulder. You looked up at the man who changed your whole life. “Yeah, he’s not too bad. Maybe a little too old for me, but I don’t think it’ll be an issue.” You smirked. Tony chuckled to himself and sat down next to you. You sat there in silence absorbing all the love bouncing around the room.
“When are you and Capsicle going to have kids? Morgan needs some cousins so she’ll stop asking me when she’s getting a sister.”
James Grant Rogers was born not too long after your wedding. The bouncing baby boy was nothing but perfect. You and Steve had finally started building the life you wanted together. Not wasting much time giving James some company, you welcomed Joseph Samuel Rogers to your family. And once again with Sarah Natalia Rogers not long after that. Steve promised you that you could stop at 3 but you’re not too sure how long that is going to last.
a/n: im so mad i literally didn’t know how to end it without it being forced or like... idk. but i hope u enjoy reading it i love love LOVED writing it and im so happy to be getting back into writing again. pls check out my masterlist and read some of my other new stories. i’ll be labeling them new so show them some love <3
Tony Stark’s overlooked superpower: his self-awareness and the rare ability to admit, honestly and without justification, when he is wrong… and then work towards becoming a better person.
So there’s a lot of “discourse” (or whatever you want to call it) over Tony Stark and whether he takes responsibility for his mistakes. Antis say he needs to step up and take responsibility; the rest of us say that Tony does take responsibility consistently, even when he probably doesn’t need to or when someone else is equally responsible. But the comment from @i-want-to-bethlieve on this post a while back got me thinking (hope you don’t mind me tagging you–didn’t want to derail the original post, but also totally crediting you for getting my brain rolling on this), with the comment that all the characters make mistakes, but only Tony’s mistakes are brought up in the narrative…and Tony clearly can and does take responsibility for his mistakes–in fact, no one else does it more often or more consistently than he does. And even those characters who do express guilt over their mistakes, they don’t fully own them, don’t fully accept the blame, and the narrative doesn’t show them putting in the hard work to atone.
When I first started seriously watching the MCU (right after Thor Ragnarok came out–before that I’d only seen Avengers and Thor…yeah, I was a late-comer to the MCU), I used to say that Tony’s superpower was his ability to admit that he was wrong.  And I stand by that.
Seriously, Tony’s ability to repeatedly say, “I was wrong” without justifying his mistakes is a superpower! Because people don’t think about how much strength it takes to admit that you are wrong. Most people can’t do it, even with small things. Don’t believe me? Think about it, seriously think about it in your daily life. You’ll probably realize that it is incredibly rare for any of us to simply say, “I was wrong” without immediately following it with “but I didn’t mean to…” or “but I did it because…” Even simply saying, “I’m sorry” is hard for most people. That’s why people often give halfhearted apologies that are half defensive. “I’m sorry you were hurt, but I didn’t mean it the way you took it!” We’ve all heard or said variations on that. Most of us rationalize and justify and excuse our mistakes, even in the rare instances when we do admit them. And in everyday situations, people will argue over stupid things because they simply don’t want to admit “I was wrong.” People are stubborn that way.
But Tony admits fault and takes responsibility for his actions in pretty much every single movie! He admits he’s wrong immediately when he returns from Afghanistan, without hesitation or rationalization. Let’s break it down:
“I saw young Americans killed by the weapons I had designed to defend them.” [Admission that his previous understanding of the situation was wrong. He thought he was doing good, but was blinded to all of the harm his weapons had done.]
“I realized I had become part of a system with zero accountability.” [Admission that he was part of the problem.]
“And that is why, effective immediately, I will be shutting down the weapons manufacturing division of Stark International.” [Immediately takes steps to correct his mistakes.]
No rationalization. No, “but I thought I was doing the right thing” or “I was just following in my dad’s footsteps” or “other people make weapons too” or “lots of people told me I was doing good!” All of those things are true. But Tony doesn’t use them to rationalize or justify his actions. He doesn’t make excuses or get defensive. He also doesn’t hesitate to begin correcting his mistakes. He shuts down the weapons division. He begins looking into other options. He beings building Iron Man suits to channel his technology into new and better ways to protect people. And then he personally uses the Iron Man suit to liberate and defend Gulmira when it is clear that he hasn’t done enough to stop the destruction his weapons caused.
But that’s just in the first movie, you say? After that he makes more mistakes. Sure, because he’s a human being, and being human is hard. We all make mistakes and personal growth is not linear. There’s backsliding and missteps along the way. But Tony still, consistently, admits when he is wrong and accepts blame when appropriate (and sometimes even when it’s not. The boy has developed a guilt complex now, okay?).
So what about Iron Man 2. Okay, Tony’s apologies and admissions of responsibility are subtler here, but they do happen.
Rhodey: Look, I’m sorry, okay.
Tony: Don’t be.
Rhodey: No, I should have trusted you more.
Tony: I’m the one who put you in this position. Forget it.
Rhodey: No, it’s your fault. I just wanted to say I’m sorry.
Tony: Thank you. That’s all I wanted to hear.
Tony does not dispute that it was his fault. He admits that he put Rhodey in an impossible position. He wants to hear the apology, but he also takes full responsibility for his part in their fight (btw, kudos to them both, since this is a great example of a mature friendship where both admit fault, apologize, and still care about each other, moving forward without holding any grudges at all). And later to Pepper: “Don’t be mad. I will formally apologize when I’m not fending off a Hammer-oid attack.” So Tony knows that he did handle things poorly and he does need to apologize. And later he implicitly takes responsibility for everything with Pepper, admitting that she would be totally justified in quitting: “You deserve better; you’ve taken such good care of me. I’ve been in a tough spot and you got me through it.”
Then we get Iron Man 3, which is all about Tony admitting when he screws up. Repeatedly. From almost scene one on.
Tony to Pepper: “Hey, I admit it! My fault! Sorry. I’m a piping hot mess.” He takes full responsibility for ruining date night, even though Pepper herself was late for date night.
Tony calling Pepper from Tennessee: “Pepper, it’s me. I’ve got a lot of apologies to make and not a lot of time. So first off, I’m so sorry I put you in harm’s way. That was selfish and stupid and it won’t happen again. Also it’s Christmas time…the rabbit’s too big. Done. Sorry. And I’m sorry in advance because…I can’t come home yet.” He apologizes for like…everything, but crucially he avoids one of the most common mistakes people make when apologizing: most people apologize for hurting someone but not for their actual actions. But not Tony. He takes responsibility for his selfish, thoughtless, and reckless actions and admits that he was wrong for all of it, promising to do better in the future. Again, no justifications or excuses, just genuine repentance.
And what about CA:CW? “Clearly, I made a mistake. Sam, I was wrong.” And right after this, Tony admits that he and Sam don’t know each other very well. Unlike with Pepper and Rhodey, who Tony trusts because of their long-standing relationships, Tony does not have any reason to believe that Sam will forgive him; admitting he’s wrong to someone who already dislikes him takes an extra measure of vulnerability, but Tony doesn’t even hesitate (I will ignore Sam’s petty “that’s a first” retort because, well, Sam doesn’t know Tony well enough to realize that he has misjudged Tony). Tony had plenty of rational reasons to think that Bucky was responsible for the bombing and everything else, but he doesn’t bring those up as justification for his (again, completely rational) mistaken interpretation of events. He just admits he was wrong and then says he wants to help Steve; he wants to do what he can to fix his mistake. When he gets to Siberia, he says, “maybe your story’s not so crazy.” Basically, he again admits that he was wrong to discount Steve’s concerns and Bucky’s story about other super-soldiers (even though he only doubted it because all evidence pointed against it and because Steve didn’t tell him until the absolute last second possible, which made it look like a last minute excuse for Steve’s actions).
Even before all of that, Tony takes full responsibility for Ultron (“Ultron–my fault”)…even though plenty of other people share responsibility for that: Bruce for helping create it, Wanda for manipulating Tony in the hopes he would “self-destruct” and for actively working with Ultron to enable his destruction, and Thanos who (presumably) programed the mind stone (since the narrative heavily implies that Tony/Bruce failed to create a functional AI and the mind stone actually put the pieces in place on its own, and Thanos implicitly takes credit for the events of the entire movie in the end-credits scene). But yeah. Only Tony admits his share of the blame for Ultron, and by extension, for Sokovia.
All of this just shows that Tony is honest and self-aware, and strong enough as a person to admit his mistakes and face them head on, rather than justifying, excusing, rationalizing, or denying. We don’t really get that from the other heroes: not Bruce, Steve, Thor, Wanda, Sam, Dr. Strange, or even Nick freaking Fury (who, I would argue, has made a fuck ton of mistakes). The closest we get is Bucky admitting “I’m not sure that I’m worth all of this,” Bruce agonizing over the destruction that Hulk causes, Clint’s confession to Natasha that he might not deserve her sacrifice, and Natasha’s comments about “red in her ledger.” But even then, most of those are more examples of self-loathing (in often unhealthy ways) rather than truly admitting fault and taking responsibility for one’s actions in a mature way. Only Natasha really takes responsibility for her actions, as her work with SHIELD and the Avengers is her attempt to do good out of a desire for atonement (the writing for Nat was often pretty poor, so we don’t see this part of her character development very clearly–it’s alluded to repeatedly, but never developed in detail).
The other Avengers do express regrets, but they struggle to take that next step of fully taking responsibility, admitting to other people they are wrong, and doing what they can to correct their mistakes. Sure, Wanda and Steve both felt bad after what happened in Lagos. They both said (privately) they felt like they were at fault. But they weren’t willing to own that and do something about it. In front of everyone else, they offer excuses or say that it’s just the cost of the job...or they don’t admit any fault at all. I don’t necessarily blame them. I probably would do the same. It would have been monumentally hard to come out in a press conference and admit that they made a mistake (though that didn’t stop Tony from doing exactly that way back in Iron Man). But that moment in Civil War is the only time the other Avengers discuss mistakes or blame–and it leads to nothing. Steve struggles with this later too…He always has some justification or explanation for his mistakes, like in his apology letter to Tony. And the “liar” scene in Endgame is further proof. That was the one time when Tony said,  “no, this wasn’t my fault. Not this time. It was yours.” And Steve isn’t able to be vulnerable and honestly admit, out loud, that yeah, he was wrong and it was his fault that the Avengers weren’t together. Steve starts to get defensive because he feels personally attacked (which, to be fair, he was). Tony mentions that Thanos is the exact reason he said they needed a suit of armor around the world and Steve says (one of his few lines), “yeah, and how’d that work out?” This is a classic deflection, an act of self-defense when someone feels attacked so they try to shift blame to the other person. We all do this in reality; it’s a natural tendency, although not a very emotionally mature reaction. After that, Steve shuts up, and I do interpret this as him internally feeling guilty about his actions because I think he knows he made mistakes and would do things differently if he had the chance to go back. But again, he doesn’t or can’t say out loud that he was wrong. And look, if we’re all honest, most of us would be like Steve…we might feel bad but we wouldn’t admit, out loud, that we were wrong. We’d rationalize or get defensive–it’s a very human reaction.
But it’s heroic to admit you are wrong and take responsibility for it. That’s not natural and it’s not easy, but it’s a skill the world desperately needs–maybe now more than ever. It’s also the only true path towards emotional growth and spiritual maturity. Robert Downey Jr. recently described the pre-Iron Man Tony Stark as “spiritually dead,” and I think any journey towards spiritual growth (or whatever you want to call it) has to begin with being 100% honest and self-aware and taking full responsibility for your own mistakes. Tony Stark does that, and he does it more fully and more consistently than any other MCU hero. He’s not perfect–but he knows that, and even more importantly, he admits it out loud, repeatedly. It’s an overlooked superpower because most people don’t really want to emulate this: people want to be respected and have super strength, but admitting you’re wrong? That doesn’t sound cool; that’s not a superpower most people want…which is why many of the other heroes don’t do it. Many of them are wish-fulfillment heroes, not three-dimensional characters who are human and flawed. Tony is the epitome of human and flawed…and he knows it. Ironically, that’s also what makes him heroic.
Yes, Tony’s mind and his heart are his superpowers, like a lot of people have said before, but let’s not neglect his capacity for reflection, for self-evaluation, for honest contrition, and the ability to admit when he is wrong and work towards righting that wrong. Those are all superpowers too.
baby steps
@omg-just-peachy peaches got this ask and nominated me to write it (i wonder why, ‘s not like angst is my brand or anything like that 👀) and hopefully i have delivered anon! i edited the prompt ever so slightly, but i hope you don’t mind. i tried really hard to give this a happy ending but i’m not very good at those so im sorry if its not up to par
//
It hadn’t been easy
AIM had been dormant for so long that Tony had almost forgotten they existed, letting his EXTREMIS protocols go lax while he focused all his time on other things (like warring between wanting to fix things with Steve and also never talking to him again)
clearly that had been a mistake, because AIM had been working on a way to control EXTREMIS, and Tony might have gotten it out of Pepper, but he never got it out of himself
Mid way through the battle he felt his body seize up, limbs thrust over and moving off their own accord, and he managed to get out a staggered, “Steve - I need help” because they took control of his senses too, making him mute and seeing through his eyes
It hadn’t been easy, because the Avengers were no longer fighting AIM, they were fighting him
and after Siberia, Tony knew exactly how to take every single one of them down
It’d been sheer luck that Tony had managed to get to Steve in time, and that Steve remembered his protocols from back when they were friends (or maybe they still were? Tony could never figure out his emotions)
Steve had barked it up, and Tony felt the armour disassemble around him - and free-falling was patently more terrifying when you had no control over your body; but Thor caught him mid fall and held him down until Natasha figured out how AIM was controlling EXTREMIS and shut down the operation
Tony felt like he was a puppet who’s strings had been cut and he abruptly slumped against Thor, the adrenaline pumping out of his system and making way for extreme exhaustion
The last thing he saw before he passed out was the blurry figure of Captain America walking towards him
/
“Tony - Tony - Tony!” Steve slaps his cheek repeatedly, leaning back when Tony stirs
He breathes a sigh of relief when Tony coughs and groans, slumping back against his heels and trying to still his thumping heart
what if - no Steve shakes his head to dispel any such thoughts, after all- Tony was waking up under him and he was going to be fine
The relief is short lived however, when Tony realises how Steve is sitting -straddling his hips because it was the quickest way to wake him up - and scrambles out from under him
Tony’s eyes are blown wide and he clutches at the nano- reactor housing his armour instantly, though he doesn’t activate it
‘Tony - ?” Steve asks, reaching out to him in an movement that's aborted when Tony flinches away from him, before pushing up onto his feet desperately
“No!” Tony shouts, “No - just, just stay away”
And then he spins on his heels and just, runs away from Steve - leaving Steve looking after him forlornly on his knees - arm still stretched out to reach him
/
“Hey,” there’s a knock on Steve’s door - and he looks up to see Tony leaning against the frame
He’s changed since the mission, into a pyjama bottom and a threadbare tshirt that falls off his shoulder
It looks oddly familiar, but Steve doesn’t think this is the time to ask whether its his
“Hey,” Tony says softly, “do you have a couple of minutes to talk?”
for you i have a lifetime, Steve thinks but he says, “yes ‘course”
“I wanted to uh - “ Tony licks his lips, and Steve valiantly focuses on not letting all of his blood rush south, “I wanted to explain what happened on the mission today”
There’s a couple moments pause and then -
“I have nightmares,” Tony says abruptly, “nightmares of Siberia. Of you...” pushing your shield into my heart over and over he doesn’t say but Steve gets it
He got it a second after Tony ran away from him
“..you know,” Tony says instead, “and when I woke up you were in a similar position and I just, freaked out I guess”
“Tony,” Steve says delicately, because they haven’t talked about Siberia since he got back and this is important, “I can never make up for what I did in Siberia. You must know how utterly sorry I am, but I understand if you never forgive me”
“But I promise you,” he takes a chance and leans forward to clasp Tony’s hands, “I will never hurt you like that again”
“Hurting you was,” Steve blinks back tears, “doing that to you was the biggest regret of my life - and I will spend the rest of it making it up to you. If you let me”
Tony looks at him for a couple of seconds, searching his face for something
He must find it, because his lips crinkle into a soft smile and he squeezes Steve’s hand back, “I know Cap. And I’m working on trusting you. Baby steps right?”
Steve nods, “baby steps”
Whatever it takes - Steve Rogers x Reader
Avengers: Endgame SPOILERS BELOW read at your own risk
Title: Whatever it takes
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader, Male MCU Character x Reader
Warnings: Avengers: Endgame spoilers
Summary: Steve finally gets the courage to speak about the love of his life in one of his group therapies. The love of his life that unlike whate everyone believe has always been you. Only problem is, despite how you have survived the snap, he hasn’t gotten the chance to tell you that you are the one he wants and not Peggy because he fears you have already found somebody else.
Tumblr media
“So yeah-” the man cleared his throat and nodded his head a bit as Steve's attention was all on him, and he felt like it was the least he could do after having failed to do the most important thing that he could of all: defeat Thanos and keep half of existence to life “I'm gonna be seeing him tomorrow too.”
“That's good.” Steve nodded his head own head “You did the hardest part and that's important.That's what matters the most. Our lives are in our hands and it's our job to live them, otherwise Thanos would have killed us too. We must have been left back for some reason and it's up to us to figure it out.”
He looked around the group, somehow feeling like these words had come out of his lips before but he couldn't exactly remember when. Maybe they had, maybe they had not. Maybe they were the exact same or maybe they were a bit different. It wouldn't matter much, anyway. The past five years he had been doing nothing but trying to comfort people, trying to help them move one – hence the group therapy because deep down he felt like it was his fault that things had come to this.
At first it was about dealing with the grief, dealing with... everything Sam had once told him when he advised him to join a group therapy, but after some time he realized the bitter truth that it wasn't about him dealing with the pain of loss. It was him dealing with the guilt of loss, the guilt of letting down people who believed in him, of letting you down. Good Lord, it felt like an eternity since he'd last seen you and he still couldn't bring himself to face you, to talk to you and even more hear what you had to say about him.
He had figured out from the first moment that you were alive, he couldn't bear to live with the doubt of course, but he could also not bring himself to stand in front of you after what had happened with the Accords. He knew you were going to be heartbroken, hurt beyond belief, even more after all these years because not only did he leave you to go to Siberia despite your pleas but also had not contacted you in all those years. In his defence, he'd always come by when he had the time, in secret, and look at you from afar or try to to learn news about you and he was always on the run, so he couldn't drag you down with him no matter what. But despite his reasons, he knew the fact that he seemed to shut you out, had broken your heart worse than that day before he went to the airport and fought against Tony.
Sometimes, when he laid awake at night for ours, gazing at your photo in his compass, he's think how bad he wished he could go back in time and listen to you. Not caring if they got the shield from him or the title of Captain. He'd trade it, he'd give it all away for you. There's nothing he wouldn't do for you but now he realized that he had indeed not done the most important thing of all: stayed back with you. If he had the chance, he'd take it all back for you. For you to smile and not watch him with glossy eyes as he left your apartment after having been unable to stay out of the fight. For you to know, to fully know, how he felt for you all these years and how truly important you were to him.
He wished he'd have stayed back with you when you asked him, that he'd have stayed home but he just couldn't and now he was left to deal with the consequences. Because now Steve realized it, he had not lost just the fight, had not lost half of existence and nearly all of his friends, but he had lost the most important person in his life and he didn't think there was any getting your back. Not that he had the courage to try anyway. He was only left to dream of a life that would've been if... Far too many ifs.
The corners of his lips lifted into a bittersweet smile “I went in the eyes seventy years ago just when I had just met the love of my life. Woke up to a whole new world and an entirely new time only to find out then that... I woke up just to meet her.” he nodded his head softly, looking down for a few seconds “Turns out everything I thought about my life and about my feelings was a lie, to put it simply. (Y/n) is the love of my life and it could never be more clear. I thought that, when I woke up seventy years later, everything was lost but turns out I had just found everything. Real love, a new reason to fight and live, happiness and so much more, more than I would have ever dreamed of. Granted-” he sighed, his smile fading “We're not really on speaking terms right now b-but I'm glad that she's still alive so that matters the most.”
He cleared his throat, looking back up when he realized he had gotten carried away speaking about you “My point is, things happen for a reason and when you think everything is lost... then you always have more to hold onto. And sometimes, we may not see it from the start but, it's so much better than what we left behind and so much better than what we thought we could ever get. The world is in our hands, guys, and it's up to us to do it right this time.” he nodded his head with a tight smile “It's up to us to find happiness and if we do, I'm sure it's going to be so much more than we ever dreamed of.”
The group remained silent for a couple minutes but it wasn't as if he realized himself. Too many thoughts running through his mind, as always these days, so it never really got quiet in his head. It was only a couple seconds later that he heard the small voice, tentatively speaking, as the question registered in his mind “And why are you not with her nw? What happened between you two that could not be fixed?”
He looked up to see Kate, the youngest of the group, ask with small tilt of her head. He didn't respond for a second, looking sadly down at his hands “I sadly made too many mistakes with her. But probably the biggest one is that I- I didn't tell how much I truly loved her when I had the chance to. If I ever find the opportunity to forgive myself for everything that happened with- with Thanos I might, but hurting her this way is something I will never forgive myself for. For letting her believe that...” but he trailed off, the thought too painful on its own for him to even put into words.
One more thing he couldn't forgive himself for, was letting you believe that he was still hooked on the memory of another woman. But he had not had the time to tell you, to show you that you were and would always be his best girl, after everything that kept being thrown at him in his life. If only he'd just let you see how much you truly meant to him, not let you slip of hid fingers like that even more... How no longer than a year after he'd met you he caught himself having completely forgotten of his compass and the photo inside of it, of how much he kept thinking about you and of how when he came across the small object and took another look at the photo... it didn't feel right. It didn't feel right to have that photo there when he spent literally every second of his entire day and night thinking, and dreaming, and talking, and smiling, and aching, and longing, and breathing for you. He was living only for you. He had then realized that he had just met the love of his life because that's how love felt like and Steve was utterly and forever in love with you. And in no longer than a couple seconds after having opened the compass he took out the photo and placed the one who should rightfully be there from the very beginning.
If only you could see it, if only you could know it and not believe he was still looking at Peggy's photo when it had all along been yours. If only you could know... but you didn't.
“I didn't tell her how I felt and she either probably thinks I want someone else or thinks that everything I told her, everything I made her believe about my feelings was, well, a lie after I couldn't stay when she asked me to and I...” he could hardly fight the tears in his eyes, could certainly not fight the way his heart tightened so painfully in his chest and he almost choked on his words “I don't know what I'd hate myself for, more.” he shook his head a bit.
“This has to do with Peggy, doesn't it?” a soft voice asked tentatively and he nodded his head.
Some of them already knew about her, he didn't doubt that probably the entire world did and he hated that even more because he couldn't stand the thought of you having to hear about it from practically everyone when people got to know you and Steve were close.
“Thing is...” he started slowly, the lump in his throat feeling weird and almost painful because he realized what he was about to say he had never spoken about it out loud “I didn't talk much to her about Peggy, sure said enough about my life in the past because she always loved to hear new things but n-not about Peggy. Not because she could find out all out about us on her own b-but because I just forgot about everything and everyone when I was around her. She-” he smiled fondly “She's truly one of a kind and God I love her so much.” it lifted some of the weight off his chest, not all but certainly enough and he smiled to himself, nodding his head again “I'm madly, hopelessly and helplessly in love with her! It makes my heart burst sometimes but it's so beautiful too. A- and it's crazy cause I- I thought I felt love but love is- it's so much more than what I have ever felt, and I had not realized it not until I met (Y/n).”
“But she doesn't know any of it, does she?” the questions kept coming and Steve was probably thankful for it. For the past years he had not been able to forget about it, let alone let go of how he felt about it.
“No, no she doesn't. It's her, it's always been her, but she- (Y/n) doesn't know that.” he let out a shaky breath “See, I have this compass a-and it had a photo of Peggy, for many many years and sure most of them I was on the ice but still, you get it. And when I came back, it was one of the few things I had left to remind me of who I was, partly because of the object itself and partly because of her photo. I always reached out for it, for obvious reasons. Just a look at her photo and things felt better, you know? Kept me grounded, reminded me of the past and made me feel like home. W-well, it wasn't until I met (Y/n) that I actually started, almost, forgetting about it. I seemed to need it even less, seemed to reach ot for it less. She kept me grounded and made me feel good... soon she even became my home. It was about a- a year later, a year into knowing her, that I realized I had actually stopped. I came across the compass by accident and thought about it and I had not reached out for it in months, I didn't need it anymore but somehow I did open it. I felt this need to... verify something inside of me, inside my head.”
“And what was that?”
“I opened it, held it right there in my hand and looked at Peggy's photo and realized it didn't feel the same. Or maybe it did but I realized it didn't feel enough, not compared to (Y/n). And then the photo- it just wasn't the right one. I felt like it didn't belong there so I- I did the only thing that I was capable of... I took Peggy's photo off and placed (Y/n) and you know what?” he looked up with a half smile on his lips “It felt right. Like it was always meant to be there, leading me back home... leading me back to her once the war was over.” he paused for a second and chuckled at the thought “Sometimes, I'd think about it. How if she saw the photo she was going to tell me about how her hair looked terrible or that I could have found a better one but it feels so good, so right for her photo to be there that I wouldn't dare change a thing.”
“And yet... you don't dare tell her about it, about any of it. She's hurt because of it and she's not the ony one. You're hurting yourself too that way.”
“It doesn't matter, none of it does at this point. As long as she's alive she can be happy one day, certainly away from me, then everything... will get better.”
“Are you sure about that?” the man who was speaking before was the one to ask him this time and Steve looked up with a frown “I mean, are you sure she will be happy... without you?”
“I- I only gave her pain when I was around, why would she want to-”
“Love is a complex thing. As much as you may think you've hurt her now, no amount of pain can compete with the one she must be feeling now, now that you're not there with her.”
“Or she could probably be relieved I'm not there...” he mumbled, his eyes casting down because he didn't want to let his hoped get up for no reason “After all, I'm responsible for all of it.”
“With all due respect, my husband was-” Mary said with glossy eyes “A huge pain in the ass sometimes. We've had our fair share of fights, all couples do anyway. And yeah, maybe we can't compare it to what has happened between you and (Y/n), but if there is one thing I can be damn sure we have in common is that I love him so much that I'd give everything to get him back despite anything that happened. There is no pain like losing your other half, none.”
“Well, loss can be... interpreted in more than one ways.” Steve whispered, mostly to himself, his lips pursed for a moment as he clenched his jaw.
“What worse can there be than not being with your soulmate?”
“It's just...” he shook his head softly, his chest feeling tight at the mere thought, the words that came next feeling foreign but so real at the same time and he knew that if he didn't speak about it now then he wouldn't really start dealing with it“I'm scared to find out. I'm scared to know if... Am I hers? I know she's mine, there is no questioning it anymore, but don't think I'll bear to know I'm not hers.”
“Well, only one way to find out.” Mary shrugged softly “You should go talk to her. It's worth the try. After all, she must have survived for a reason, right?” she said, practically quoting his words from before and he would've laughed but he just couldn't bring himself too.
“It's just not that and that makes it even worse.” he chewed on his lower lip for a moment, eyes casted down. They were down for the mot part as he spoke about you and what had happened, what he'd done to hurt you. It wasn't because he wasn't feeling comfortable with them knowing but because of the shame that lived deep within his heart. He was ashamed probably of others knowing how he'd hurt you and definitely of you, even if you weren't there. He was ashamedof how he had failed you on so many levels. He was ashamed of saying it out loud because it all then became real.
“That's not the only thing you're scared of, isn't it?”
He gave them a tight smile, unable to form any words in that moment as the lump in his throat prevented him from breathing in the first place. But he had to swallow it down, after giving them a week nod and spoke softly “I'm scared, even more, that when I go and see her I won't be the love of her life because she's found that in somebody else. Truth is-” he sighed “I'm most certainly sure she has someone already there with her. I know that she does, because I know him too. I know how he's always felt for her so if he had the chance to be with her then why not take it? I would have done the same. Would've... Thing is-” he sighed, shrugging softly and yet with so much pain in his heart that it had started becoming physical he was sure “I'm scared to see it for real, I'm scared to see that she is with him.”
“I keep telling everybody they should move on, I keep telling you guys that. Some people do but... I hope not her. Gosh, I pray she hasn't moved on.” his head hang low as his eyes closed softly and he let out a deep breath “I don't want to see her move on from me.”
“And again... she could be worth the try. Whatever it takes.”
Tony Stark Fic Recs
Tumblr media
Burning Candles - by kerravon Hurt/comfort, exhaustion, concussions, hurt tony, steve is a bro, nick fury being morally shady, the avengers! Summary: A few months have passed since the Avengers fought the Chitauri, and the team is coming together, except for Tony, who seems to be coming apart. At first, Steve assumes that he's just being irresponsible and annoying, but then JARVIS clues him in.
Fifth Time Lucky - by Arkada oneshot, fluff, this fic is short, sweet and a lot of fun. Well worth the read. Summary:  Tony Stark has five soulmates, but he gave up on finding any of them a long time ago.
Hide A Heart Of War - by RayShippouUchiha Tony Centric 2 chapter fic. Flower soul mark au. EXCELLENT ANGST.  Lots of feels, there’s also a slow burn romance in the background. Rhodey is a good bro. Loving all the descriptions of the soulmarks. Summary:  “You’ve got war in your heart boy,” Howard sneers, “don’t ever try and pretend to be anything but what you are.” Tony feels the familiar burn of a flower mark being etched into his skin but he doesn’t look, doesn’t try and check to see what it is. Instead he keeps his eyes on Howard and his hands cupped around his bleeding mouth and nose.
The (Not So) Great Pretender - by RayShippouUchiha Complete, secret identities, tony/bucky which i don’t usually ship but hey this author really makes it worth it. Oblivious Avengers. Hilarious but also angsty? Summary: Basically no one believes Tony when he tells them he’s Iron Man so he’s just... reluctantly keeping his secret identity going? It’s super funny.
To Victor Goes the Spoils - by tisfan Tony Stark/Victor von Doom, 10 chapters, complete, secret identities. Summary: In which Doom finds himself at a super hero masked ball... and gaining the attentions of the handsome and charming Tony Stark...Just one dance... just one kiss... before Doom unleashes his evil plot. Backstory: I accidentally stumbled on this doom x iron man fic so i thought i’d read it for laughs but then the fic itself was really good and I was suckered into shipping it. Now I’m in rarepair hell. The end.
Iron Man Yes, Tony Stark...Not Recommended - by lilsmartass Gen. Complete. 9 chapters. Angst, lots of angst. Hurt/comfort. Unintentional bullying. Rhodey is the captain of the tony stark defence squad. AND HE WILL HAVE HIS REVENGE. Summary: Clint and Steve have both seen Natasha’s report on Tony and expect him to be a certain way. With Pepper now out of the picture, Bruce in India and Thor is Asgard they have no one to show them just how wrong first impressions can be.
That Which Kills Us - by Ironlawyer Ultimates!verse, steve/tony, oneshot, internalised homophobia, Tony is not a good patient. Summary: Sometimes Tony hates being alive as much as he hates dying. Trying to juggle duties to The Ultimates and a terminal illness isn’t exactly easy. Throw in an irate Steve Rogers and things just get too damn complicated.
Doomed To Failure - by DobbyRocksSocks Oneshot, excellent content, i read this fic and then i had to sit in my chair and be like ‘whoa’ for a while. This au is very well done! Summary: Everyone is born with their soulmate on one wrist, and their mortal enemy on the other. What do you do when it's the same person?
Say Goodbye to Yesterday - by melonbutterfly 4 chapter fic, complete, time loop, team building, alien invasion. time travel is a trope i keel over for this you must learn. Summary:  The day after the invasion Tony wakes up and his tower is intact again; everything is exactly the way it was before this whole mess went down.
From A to Z - by Rachel500 26 chapter fic.Complete. Very very good, *sips fruit juice out of my champaigne glass* a classic of the genre! I’m a sucker for time travel as a trope, pair that with fixing the disaster that was the mcu chronology? BUDDY I’M SOLD.\ Summary: “OK, hypothetically, you get sent back in time one year. Does that make a difference?” Strange asked. “Two? Three? Could you live through the worst experience of your life again to preserve enough of the timeline to continue? Could you stand aside and let someone you love live through a bad experience in their life?” “OK. I get it. Bad idea.” Tony smirked at Strange to cover for his unease. “So. Plan B?” Strange grinned but there was a serious glint in his eyes. “How about we make it plan Z?”
Acceptable Risk Is Not - by izumi2 Super bamf tony, oneshot, Maria Hill redemption arc. Captain america the winter soldier. Not steve friendly but this can be blamed on the plot of the movie making zero sense with hindsight. Summary: what if someone considered an alternate solution to the data drop?  THIS IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE FICS FOR REASONS SO PLEASE TRY IT.
The Course of Reason - by Infie Oneshot, aftermath of captain america civil war, Carol Danvers is a relateable ho whom I stan, the saltiest of all possible responses to that film. YESSSS. This is it. The fic that finally knocked me over the edge onto the civil war team iron man side of the fence. BEHOLD. It’s greatness. Summary: The UN has asked Tony to discuss their options with the Fugitive Avengers. It does not go the way they expect it to.
Uncompromising Principles - by Kizmet 19 chapter fic, it’s completed and it’s very well done, legal drama, Tony/Pepper, Steve is... a good person who made mistakes, he’s trying anyway, i can’t say more without spoilers, but it’s A Ride, like you’ll read this and it’ll make you have Feelings and Thoughts and it’s very clever in how it goes about making those Feelings and Thoughts happen. Captain America: civil war aftermath fic. Summary: After leaving Siberia Captain America begins his plans to overturn the Accords. But not all is as it seems.Not compliant with the end of "Civil War".
To intervene - by apathyinreverie Currently at 15 chapters, ongoing, a lot of fun, tony stark has a heart, tony and rhodey, civil war team iron man, mutant kind, pro accords. Summary: The one where Rhodey stages an intervention after the whole Ultron fiasco.
Veni, Vidi, Amavi - by Maedlin Treat yo’self. It’s a Time travel fic. ONE OF THE BEST: Bamf Tony Stark, Bamf Jarvis, Palladium Poisoning, Complete, 26 chapter fic, but you’ll wish it was longer by the time you’re done. (Luckily there’s an ongoing sequel series to enjoy!) THIS FIC IS SUPREMELY GOOD! And HEAVY on the Jarvis love! DO YOURSELVES A FAVOUR AND TRY IT SERIOUSLY YOU WON’T REGRET READING THIS. Highest of recs goes to this. Summary:  (We came, we saw, we loved.) Tony's not the hero type. To suggest otherwise would be outlandish and fantastic, clearly.  Yet somehow, he's the one that's responsible for saving the universe. Now, he's a decade in the past. He's just revealed to the world he's Iron Man.  Tony finds himself facing dozens of old problems, and as time passes the ripple effect of his presence generates ever more new issues. All the while, the impending threat of Thanos looms ever-closer.
With One More Try (Can We Start Again) - by Infinite_Monkeys 5 Chapter fic, and it’s Completed. Time travel fix it, not strictly tony stark-centric but still a firm fave, A masterpiece. Definitely in my top 5 time travel fics and i’ve read a LOT so that’s saying something! Contains: That Good Loki Content. Summary: Loki's attempt to conquer Earth has, to his great dismay, succeeded spectacularly. When Thanos sends him to collect the Time Stone, he strikes a deal with the Stone's keeper: He'll be sent back to the beginning of the invasion, and this time, armed with knowledge about his opponents, he can lose properly. Or: a time loop fic in which Loki does increasingly desperate things to try and get the Avengers to defeat him already.
(Science) Bros before (HYDRA) Hoes - by Kizmet Tony is the captain of the Bruce Banner defence squad, Legal Shenanigans, It’s marked as Ongoing but what’s there is satisfying enough on its own I promise, basically a huge callout for Johannesburg, Hulk deserves a hug. Summary: The Hulk isn’t taken from the planet after AoU, there’s no one conveniently out of reach to take the fall for Johannesburg… A choice is going to have to be made: Wanda or the Hulk.
A Larger Matter - by TheSovereigntyofReality Oneshot. Consequences! The ‘Steve’s blood’ scene in the agent carter tv show always pissed me off so this fic was uh Cathartic shall we say, but honestly you can read it and have it make perfect sense even without having seen the show, Howard Stark, teenaged Tony, Team Stark. Woohoo. Summary: When Peggy Carter tipped out Steve's blood, she had no idea the hornet's nest she just kicked.
Who in their Right Mind... - by AnonEhouse Crackfic, Oneshot Summary: Dum-E saves the universe
Catching Butterflies - by GremlinSR Ongoing, 6 chapters and counting, very very good content, like you wouldn’t think so from the summary which is a little bland but it’s actually very very good. Believe me when I tell you: It contains The Good Stuff. Time Travel fix it, Bamf Tony Stark, Bamf yet confused T’Challa. Summary: Tony snaps his fingers...and wakes up five days before the events that led to the death of JARVIS and the creation of Ultron. He decides he won't let the future he lived come to pass, no matter how thoroughly he has to destroy the timeline.
The War is Far From Over Now - by Dont_call_me_Carrie Ongoing, 40 dhapters and counting, this fic is clearly the author’s baby and they put so much work into it so watching it grow is a pleasure. Protective Jarvis, Protective Stark Industries Employees who like their boss. Rhodey is a good Bro, Awesome Pepper Potts. Fix it via Accidental World Domination. Summary: In which Tony does not, in fact, intend to take over the world.... unfortunately, everyone else missed that particular memo.
Can I Quote You On This? - by Wix Oneshot, Mcu critical, Avengers Critical, salty, extremely salty. Uncovering Plot Holes is easy when the road’s full of them. Summary:  Christine was sent in to just do a puff piece about the Avengers. What she uncovers instead is so much more interesting.
Strong Enough to Bend - by Kizmet Oneshot, salt and shade, tony stark & steve rogers, the author has Opinions about mcu steve so if that’s not your thing i wouldn’t rec it, not steve friendly? Summary: Steve ‘watches’ the videos on Tony Stark that Shield provides him with
Take that Away and What are You? - by Kizmet Oneshot, kidnapping, bamf tony stark, not steve friendly, I love this fic Summary: Tony and Steve get kidnapped. Since Tony’s wearing a tux, Steve figures it’s all up to him to get them out of this mess. Steve never really thought much about the conditions under which Tony built the Mach I.
Facing the devil (and the deep, blue sea) - by petroltogo Oneshot, au, not steve friendly, steve isn’t a good person in this fic, but it’s juicy, soulmate au, soulmarks Summary:  Alternate title: No obvious truth  Post-CACW: In an alternate universe where everyone has the name of their soulmate and the name of their greatest enemy written on their wrists, recently captured ex-Avenger Steve Rogers receives an unexpected visitor two days before the start of his trial. [The trick is figuring out which name is tied to which fate.] [The trick is realising you’ll never know.]
Asking Why - by Kizmet Oneshot. the relief and catharsis of logic. Nat, Hill, Cho, Rhodey and Pepper sit Tony down to talk about what led to the creation of Ultron. Scapegoating is stupid: The Fanfic edition. Summary: Applying analytical techniques in the aftermath of Ultron
Steve realizes he’s in love with Tony two months after Siberia. He sees dark hair, a flash of sunglasses from across the street and has an instant of joy, before disappointment sets in as the man turns around to reveal his face. The visceral feeling of regret and loneliness that follows is so sharp that Steve can’t breathe around it for a moment, swallowing everything down and hurrying away. Tony could always twist him up until he was yelling, laughing, screaming, smiling.
The moment that he recognizes the dark warmth resting heavy on his heart is like a punch to the gut. He feels unbalanced without Tony there to challenge him, draw him out of his dark thoughts and push away the guilt that haunts him at night.
He misses Tony.
He regrets a lot of things but acknowledging the complicated feeling that sometimes feels like it’s been inscribed deep into his bones only after all the pain and struggle sometimes overwhelms him with grief.
-
Tony always knew he loved Steve.
Steve smiled, chuckled and Tony thinks oh. okay. and soldiers on.
He loses Steve, (but he doesn’t and yet, why can he hear those words echo through him every time he closes his eyes) and the sorrow that engulfs him at the very thought drives him to reckless decisions, to Ultron, to more guilt.
He locks it away.
They fight and he’s shredding apart, piece by piece. He can’t find the words to explain, to make Steve understand, and he feels desperately and unavoidably alone.
Steve lies to him and he breaks.
When his breathing slows enough to let the last of the panic attack fade, Tony lets the cold seep into his bones and waits for his rescue. He takes all the pain and love that is now irrevocably tied together and locks it down, puts it in a box and never brings it out.
The package arrives and Tony doesn’t know how to react to the letter. He means to put the battered old phone in a drawer and never pull it out, but somehow it ends up in his pocket anyway.
-
Pepper knows. They get engaged and Tony refuses to lie to her. She smiles at him sadly and tells him, “I know, Tony. I always knew.”
Tony absorbs that revelation and then makes sure she knows that it’s done. It’s in that box locked away in his mind and it’s not coming back.
He’s done.
-
They go to space.
Tony says that he saw this coming and a strange mixture of vindication and sorrow is warring through him as he makes plans to save the world.
They lose and he survives, his deepest fear realized before him as he bleeds out on a strange planet, a caustic guilt and anger at the unfairness of it all gnawing at him. Focusing on getting home with Nebula helps; he’s always felt the most useful when he’s able to fix something, even if it’s just watching her soften around him as the days go by.
He meets Carol and he’s weary. Steve is there and all he can think is I needed you. Pepper cries into his shoulder and he grips her tightly, refusing to let go of this lifeline he desperately needs.
Steve questions him and Tony snaps, the resentment and bitterness clawing at his throat as he spits out the words that he had locked away so tightly. Steve could always get to him like no one else, rip him into jagged edges and reckless mistakes that he regrets a minute after it happens.
-
This isn’t how Steve imagined it going.
He stands through Tony’s anger with a quiet acceptance that surprises even him and refuses to let himself react to the vitriolic words Tony flings at him. He’s tired, so tired, and he just wants his team back.
He misses the easy camaraderie of those first few years. He dreams sometimes about finding Bucky earlier, bringing him into the Avengers. Tony fixes him and they stay a family, no fighting, no pain.
He always wakes up from those dreams with dry eyes and no matter how much the tears fight to come forward, he can’t seem to summon up the energy to let them fall. They lost and he has to move on.
But he can’t.  He tells Natasha what he’s learned the hard way: they don’t get the luxury of moving on. They lost. They didn’t keep their promise. They didn’t save the world.
Scott shows up and Steve hates himself for latching on to hope so easily, so quickly after everything that happened. He hasn’t seen Tony for years (not since the wedding that Steve stoically stood through, giving Tony the brightest smile and most genuine congratulations that he could summon through the pain choking him) and the thought of fixing everything alongside his love friend excites him.
Natasha gives him a knowing look as he throws on the leather jacket and he refuses to blush.
-
Tony’s happy and Steve can’t even bring forth the resentment he feels he should have after he sees the soft, loving look Tony gives his daughter. Tony’s retired, he’s done, and Steve has no right to drag him back into the fray when he has so much to lose.
He stands outside the compound, hopelessness threatening the fragile hope he had been building since Scott showed up on the cameras. But Tony comes back. He arrives with a solution and forgiveness that Steve never even thought to ask for. He can’t help the way his eyes soften, and his lips tug up in a fond smile.
They fall back into old habits of banter and flirting. Tony makes a comment about his ass and Steve feels something slot back into place in his chest. There’s a part of him that almost doesn’t want this to end because he refuses doesn’t want to lose Tony again.
He trusts Tony with his life, he always did, and they land in the 1970’s with a jolt and a plan. The silence before they can get into Camp Leigh threatens to overwhelm them, but they never were ones to shy away from the hard topics.
They talk. Finally.
Steve refuses to wait another moment and admits what he figured out years ago when he first lost Tony. Tony shakes his head, tears threatening to fall. “I always loved you,” he tells Steve, years of missed opportunities and longing reflecting back in his eyes.
It’s too late for them and Steve knew this already but god, it hurts to have Tony say it to him, no matter how soft and full of pain it is.
-
Tony snaps and Steve loses him for good.
He can’t.
He won’t.
He refuses.
This can’t happen.
He can’t live here with the anguish and the memories and Morgan who reminds him so much of Tony. Her curiosity, mischievous smile, and quiet strength under the weight of her father’s death showcase the absolute best of Tony and Pepper combined. She doesn’t know Steve outside of the stories her dad told her and Steve smiles at her through his tears.
He and Bucky are inseparable as they wade through the recovery process, and he’s overjoyed to have his friend back. The years between Shuri’s genius fixing Bucky’s battered mind and the fight for their world against a purple monster full of hubris and power gave them time to heal and talk and figure things out.
So when Steve volunteers to take the stones, Bucky just looks at him knowingly.
He never could hide anything from Bucky.
He lets Steve go with a smile and a quip, standing tall with Sam at his back and Steve knows they’ll be okay.
He stands on the platform, everything ready to go, his heart beating a constant echo of Tony Tony Tony Tony, his choice made long ago with a smile and a quiet we won.
He holds his breath and leaps.
Antibes, 2016
“Doctor. Captain.” T’Challa’s voice sounded through the room and you both instantly seemed to ease up slightly. His presence was commanding as he looked between the two of you.
“What’s going on?” he asked, taking his eyes off Steve to look at you and you couldn’t seem to hold back your words, almost like a toddler tattling on her sibling to their parent.
“Captain Rogers wants to move Bucky. I don’t know where you’re going but even moving him could be dangerous and the flight is going to kill him,” you spoke quickly, before chancing a glance at Steve who seemed to be softening a little.
“Maybe staying for a while isn’t a bad idea Captain?” T’Challa also turned his attention to Steve, letting you know it was ultimately his choice what they were going to do. Bucky was Steve’s friend and T’Challa was going to follow his lead.
“How long?” Steve’s eyes met yours and you lowered the gun completely. You looked back at Bucky for a brief moment. The truth was you couldn't be sure. Had he been a normal person you wouldn’t dare move him for several days, but Bucky wasn’t normal.
You took a deep breath before looking back at Steve, “48 hours. Maybe 24. It depends on him really and how fast he heals.”
“We’ll stay 24,” Steve agreed and T’Challa seemed to relax before giving Steve a nod.
“I’ll take the first shift,” T’Challa said before disappearing back out the door, leaving you to instantly miss him. His presence seemed to work as a buffer between you and Steve, who was once again back to watching your every move as you began changing Bucky’s bandages.
You worked in silence trying to keep your focus on Bucky and ignore the Steve staring at you. It didn’t anger you. You knew that he worried and he had no reason to trust you. You knew what your last name associated you with and Steve didn’t know you so there was no reason for him to think any different.
It was getting late so after you had finished up on Bucky, you headed into the kitchen fixing up a few sandwiches. You left one in the fridge with a note for T’Challa before grabbing the two others, along with a couple of beers, then headed back into the living room. You stopped in the doorway when you saw Steve standing at Bucky’s side, with his back turned to you. His hand was resting on the unconscious man’s shoulder as he spoke softly to him, telling him to hang in there.
You cleared your throat awkwardly, not wanting to disturb but also not wanting Steve to think you were spying on him. He turned around slowly and completely unsurprised, causing you to scold yourself. After spending two years with Bucky, you should be used to super soldier hearing by now. Of course, Steve had already known you had been standing there.
You awkwardly held out the sandwiches and beer for both of you showing them to him, “Peace offering?”
Steve suspiciously eyed food before looking back at you, “How do I know you didn’t poison them?”
Your eyes widened and you felt the anger bubble in your chest. You understood him not completely trusting you but this was getting ridiculous.
“Really? If that’s how it’s gonna be, you can starve,” you grumbled before pulling up a chair to sit down next to Bucky’s head. Your head jerked up as Steve chuckled and pulled up a chair to sit across from you.
“It was a joke Doctor,” he smiled at you for the first time and you blinked a few times to make sure you weren’t seeing things.
“Well you are very not funny then Captain,” you pulled a face at him, but offered a small smile anyway as you pushed the sandwich and beer towards him. At least this was progress, even if you didn't expect it to last. You had heard plenty stories of the stubbornness Steve Rogers possessed. Bucky damn well better hurry up and wake up because you weren’t sure how much longer your patience would prevent you from strangling his best friend.
You ate in silence only interrupted by a slight movement of Bucky’s hand and you instantly sprung to your feet, checking his vitals and shining a light into his eyes. You sat back down with a sigh, telling Steve slight movements were normal neural responses and didn’t mean anything.
Steve nodded and relaxed back into his chair, taking another sip of his beer as you continued watching Bucky for a while. You felt Steve’s eyes on you again but this time it didn’t bother you as much since his look was more curious this time than judgemental.
“He guided you here,” you said quietly without taking your eyes off Bucky. You felt Steve sit up a little straighter so you continued before he could put his guards up again. “Bucky is the only person in the world that would know to find me here. You’re here because he needed my help. Because this is where he wants to be. He trusts me. Do you trust him?”
You turned your eyes away from Bucky to look at Steve, who took a deep breath before he nodded.
“I do.”
“Then you can trust me too,” you promised him. “I won’t hurt him. He’s the last person in the world I would want to hurt and he loves you so you’re safe as well.” The last part you said a little more jokingly but Steve’s face didn’t shift from the serious folds he had put on.
“Why are you trying to help him?” Steve asked, studying you carefully.
“He helped me,” you paused before taking a deep breath. “And he saved my life once. It’s time I repay the favor.”
Siberia, Early 2015
The cold was like a thousand knives against your skin. You had traveled all over the world but you tended to prefer the warmer climates. It didn’t help Barnes got even more sullen than usual in the cold.
It had been six months now. Six months since Barnes showed up in your apartment. Six months since you had convinced him to take you with him in his search for answers. In a lot of ways, Barnes seemed to be doing better. His memories were slowly returning and he scribbled them all down in little notebooks to make heads and tales of them. You never asked to read them and Barnes never offered.
Just like you pretended you didn’t hear him tossing and turning in the bed across the room in a new room every night. Dirty American motel rooms had been traded for dirty Russian motels. Life on the road was rough but you were used to it. It wasn’t a big deal and you didn’t mind doing odd jobs along the way to earn some money for food and a bed. You even did a few consultations here and there, earning some food or whatever the occasional villager had to spare.
Barnes always stayed back. Maybe it was to keep watch or maybe he was sure he’d scare your patients off. He still didn’t talk much but he treated you with kindness even on his bad and more sullen days. He didn’t take his moodiness out on you but rather his surrounding. He wasn’t a bad travel companion and to be honest you admired the man.
After all, he had been through he was still incredibly kind to people, not just you but random strangers on your way. He was alert and vigilant which was to be expected and you were sure his skills had kept you out of trouble until now.
You were in Siberia. Back where it all started for Barnes and even for HYDRA there was history here. There were still smaller cells around the world trying to regain some of their lost power. It just so happened you and Barnes had managed to walk straight into one of those.
Barnes had quickly shoved you under a table to hide as he took out five agents on his own. Your jaw dropped to the floor as you watched him. You had tended to his wounds in the past. You knew the man had an impressive physique but seeing him in action like this was something else entirely.
Not until all five agents laid dead on the ground did Barnes turn to face you. He squatted down in front of the table, reaching out his hand to you.
“Are you okay?”
You nodded and was just about to take his hand when you spotted movement from the floor above you.
“Look out!” you yelled as a grenade was fired from above you. Barnes moved fast, blocking it with his metal arm but the blast was enough to send him flying through a wall and a few feet to the floor below.
“James!” you called after him, panic and fear evident in your voice. Stupidly your fear wasn’t for your own life, that was at risk from the HYDRA agent most likely fast approaching you, but for the man that laid a floor beneath you groaning as he began moving. You breathed a sigh of relief as you watched Barnes get back on his feet.
He looked up at you and waved his arm to signal you to move on. “Get out of there Doc. Now!”
That was the moment the fear for your own life took over. You sprung to your feet to see an agent fast approaching from the hall. You twirled around, sprinting down the opposite way you and Barnes had come. You had thought for nothing but to get away from the man behind you. You ran. Through halls and corridors. Past holding cells and medical rooms worse looking than the one hidden away behind the DC medbay. You ran and tried to suppress the images of Barnes being held in those. Now wasn’t the time. You needed to get away.
You sped up when you saw the light of day, hearing the man closing in on you from behind. You sprinted from the building, into the open and straight onto the ice. You realized your mistake as soon as you felt it beneath your feet but you had no choice but to continue and hope for the best.
Hope wasn’t enough as it would turn out and you felt the ground give beneath your feet and you fell just as a shot rang through the air, followed by Barnes calling out your name. His voice was the last thing you heard before the cold water swallowed you, pulling you down and making it instantly impossible for you to move. The pain was excruciating as you fought to reach the surface to little avail.
Your conscious was slipping when a metal arm broke the ice, grabbing your jacket and pulling you back onto the ice and into the safety of two strong arms.
“Hey. Hey. Are you with me?” Barnes asked, shaking you and rubbing his hands up and down your arms.
“Cold,” you stuttered and he nodded, looking around. You could practically see the wheels turning in his head as he kept you close, kept rubbing your arms and back trying to get a bit of warmth into you.
“I know sweetheart. I know. We can’t stay here,” he muttered. “I’m going to carry you back to the truck. We’ll find shelter somewhere. You’ll be okay.”
You closed your eyes as he lifted you off the ground and he started to run. Bucky moved fast as if you weighed nothing. He moved so fast the wind made you shiver even worse than before. You were practically blue when you finally reached the truck.
Barnes pulled the door open and lifted you into the front, before running around the car getting into the driver’s seat.
“Y/N. I have to get us out of here,” Barnes tenderly cupped your face. “Are you with me?”
“Ye...yes,” you shivered, trying to focus on the warmth from his hands.
“Good. Good. Doc, I need you to try and get your clothes off for me,” Barnes spoke softly, in great contrast to the way he put the truck into motion. He sped through the snow-covered land, as his eyes flickered back to you occasionally to make sure you were still awake. When you appeared to be struggling a little too much with a zipper or a bottom, Barnes quickly reached out to the side to help you. When you were down to your underwear, he took his eyes of the road long enough to reach into the back for two thick blankets, throwing them over you.
When you had been driving for a while, he started cranking up the heat, his eyes still flickering towards you as he took you fast and far away from the HYDRA base.
“You couldn’t have thought of that earlier?” you glared at his hand resting over the heater as your teeth continued to clatter.
“You’re the doctor. What would happen if I let you heat up too fast?” Barnes looked over at you with a smile. Clearly relieved you were feeling well enough to chastise him.
“Oh shut up. I’m cold. My brain stopped working,” you mumbled, causing Barnes to laugh and reach out to try and rub a bit of warmth into you.
“There’s an abandoned cabin a few clicks east. I noticed it on our way up here. We can stay there for the night,” Barnes promised you and you nodded. You just wanted to get inside, near a fire or possible into a warm bath.
“I remembered something.” Barnes started talking and you knew he was trying to keep you awake.
“Yeah?” you fought to keep your eyes open looking over at him.
“I remembered falling off a train. Steve tried to catch me. He almost fell too,” Barnes looked over at you, giving you a slight shake when he noticed your eyes closed.
“I’m awake. Captain America is clumsy. Anything else?” you muttered, opening your eyes to see Barnes smiling at you as he pulled up next to an old cabin.
“No. But I realized I am done chasing the bad parts of my past. I want a life, not to stay their prisoner,” Barnes answered you as he lifted you out of the truck, making sure the blankets were securely wrapped around you as a shelter from the cold.
“That’s great James,” you muttered as Barnes lowered you down on the couch after having kicked the door open and shut behind you. He looked over his shoulder as he began lighting the fireplace.
“Don’t call me that,” he said and your eyes instantly opened wide as you realized your mistake. You hadn’t ever called him anything but Barnes or Sergeant Barnes since you realized who he was.
“Sorry. Barnes,” you corrected yourself feeling a bit foolish, but he just smiled at you as the fire caught on.
“Not that either. Bucky. My name is Bucky,” he clarified, making you smile through your shudders.
"Bucky," you repeated, tasting the word in your mouth. You liked it. It was a strange name but somehow it suited him.
Bucky frowned when he saw you still shaking. The heat from the fire and blanket wasn’t going to be enough. He stood up and started to undress without a word.
Your eyes widened. You had shared a room many times now but he usually had the decency to step into the bathroom before dressing down.
“What… what are you doing?” you asked as his pants hit the floor after his shirt, and he began moving to lay down behind you after having stripped down to his boxers.
“Body heat will warm you up quicker and safer,” Bucky explained, reaching out to gently tug the blanket you were clenching against your body. “Let me in?”
You hesitated for a moment before you let go and let Bucky tug the blankets aside, to crawl in with you. He wrapped his arms around you and you felt the heat radiating from his body start to warm up your freezing limps. You closed your eyes, pressing yourself as close to his chest as possible.
His fingers ran through your hair and he gave you a small squeeze. “You’re gonna be okay Doc. Sleep now.”
You hummed in agreement, as sleep was already overtaking you, but not before you realized something. Even in the middle of nowhere in Siberia, still fighting hyperthermia, you had never in your life felt safer or at home than you did in the arms of Bucky Barnes.
Time Travel Stony Fanfic
Character from the Future travels to the Past
A Shadow Hanging Over Our Fate by CaptainDean13
Summary: The Avengers get sent back in time to WWII where they run into the Howling Commandos... complete with Bucky and Steve. Little hard to explain that away, especially when you are trying to keep some major secrets. Secrets like how you ended up in the future and why the hell Bucky is now a scary (reformed) assassin with a metal arm, not to mention that you married your friend's son.
Note: A 1000/10 READ. THIS IS SO FREAKIN’ GOOD THAT I READ IT 3 TIMES SINCE I FIRST FOUND IT LAST YEAR. It’s a nice and well written time travel fic with the howling commandos and past Steve and Bucky!!
A New Way For Us by ann2who
Summary: They fight Thanos—and they’re losing. And before Tony knows what’s happening, he’s standing with Doctor Strange in front of the Eye of Agamotto and gets send back in time. Can he find a way to fix things this time around, or are they doomed to fall apart all over again?
Note: This is where Tony went back in time to fix everything that went wrong and prepare for the arrival of Thanos! Due to an unexpected twist of fate, he found himself getting closer to Steve of all people!
Two More Miracles (To Be A Saint) by queenpenthesilea
Summary: “Get up, Stark, you sleep too much. You said you would teach me paper football.”
Tony’s eyes snapped open. No. No. Had it all been a dream? Had he just imagined five years – five years - of an idyllic life, complete with a beautiful, wonderful daughter? He pushed himself up, looking around; he was on the Milano – he was on the fucking Milano, and either this was a really weird version of hell or everything had been a dream. Or, a little voice whispered, something had gone horribly, horribly wrong with the infinity stones.
Note: A nice and juicy post-Endgame Time Travel fanfic!! Though, this one held a few what ifs.
Saving the World is a 12 Step Program by janonny
Summary: Tony and Steve fall to pieces when Thanos’ wins.
Then they pick themselves up, and find a solution. They also find something infinitely more precious in the process.
-
“It’s going to sound pretty outrageous,” Tony admitted, rubbing a hand over his brow. While he had put on some weight and wasn’t as gaunt anymore, he was still easily tired nowadays.
“More outrageous than talking racoons and a purple villain traveling through space to collect magic stones?” Steve asked drily.
Note: This is another post-Endgame fanfic but with a twist and different take on the whole time travel!
Oh, Snap by wedelia
Summary: Peter wakes up, and he’s simultaneously five years too early and right on time.
Or, Post-Endgame Peter goes back in time and accidentally-on-purpose gets Steve and Tony together before the initial snap happens. And, oh, yeah—he also recruits a former-Air-Force-pilot-turned-galactic-hero, has lunch with Black Widow, and somehow befriends Nick Fury. This changes things.
Note: It’s Peter who time travels this time around!!
If We Never Got This Second Chance by Pookaseraph
Summary: When Tony and Steve’s son from the future, Jake Jensen, arrives at Avenger’s Tower, the two of them are forced to confront some hard truths: Tony that he might not actually become a horrible father, and Steve that he might not be able to set aside his discomfort with sharing a child with another man. When they both get a second chance at a first try at fatherhood, it’s up to the two of them to learn from their own future's past.
Note: Anyone up for some future son time travel? Enjoy this nicely written fanfic of Stony’s future son traveling and meeting the past versions of his parents! Past versions that are not even together yet! Things are about to get weird for Steve and Tony.
Your Name on Every Wall by Sineala
Summary: The Time Gem throws Steve into the past rather than the future, and in doing so, it gives him the opportunity to undo his past mistakes. But when it turns out that all of his mistakes involve Tony Stark, Steve begins to wonder if he's ever going to be able to mend things between them.
Note: A unique plot where Steve travels to the future and realizes what he is missing on!
Together, At Dawn by RoseGoldAmpersand
Summary: Steve returns the Infinity Stones to New York and finds himself in conversation with Tony of the past. More mature and willing to listen to Tony he realises that what he previously thought were taunts was actually Tony flirting with him.
In light of this new discovery and alone in Tony’s workshop after the battle of New York, one thing leads to another...
Note: ohhhhh, some juicy smut anyone?
  Don't Look Back, You Can Never Look Back. by iL0Vsuperman
Summary: Tony Stark: billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, and, now, superhero.
It’d only been a few months prior that he’d revealed to the world he was Iron Man and life couldn’t be better.
That is…until he stumbled upon an old abandoned Hydra lab and kinda set off one of their machines by accident. A blast of blue light later and he found himself in the same lab…only it is seventy years earlier and it is full of Hydra agents.
Cue the entrance of the Howling Commandos led by Tony’s childhood hero, Captain America.
Suddenly, Tony is living out a dream. He’s joining up with the Commandos in the search to get Tony back to his right era. It’s the adventure of a lifetime and, at first, it’s amazing…but then he and Steve connect in ways more than just friendship and he finds that he is torn between wanting to stay with him or go back home.
In the end, whatever the result, he loses.
Note: Tony meets his childhood heroes-the Howling Commandos and Captain America!
The Future is Yet in Your Power by FestiveFerret
Summary: "Now." Wong leaned back in his chair. "What would you do to save this world from Thanos' attack? What would you sacrifice?"
"Anything," Steve said. "Anything at all."
Wong considered him for a moment, expression unreadable. "There's one thing, maybe."
Note: This is nice fanfic about Steve putting everything on the line to hopefully make a change.
The Good or Bad Thing by petreparkour for SeetheSea
summary: “It’s the metal suit,” Thor informed Steve, his normally-booming voice tinny over the SHIELD comms. “What did Stark call it—Iron Man?”
“But he’s down here,” Steve protested as the Hulk roared in Stark’s face, startling him into waking with a shout. “How could—”“It’s damaged,” Thor reported. “But it looks different. More advanced. And he—ah. He’s carrying you, Captain.”
“Please tell me nobody kissed me,” Stark breathed out, and then Stark’s voice suddenly came over the comms, but the man lying next to him hadn’t moved.“
Guys, come on, you’re killing me here. What is it, 2012? God, I hate time travel. First, I'm fighting Thanos. Now, I have to deal with my past self and Thor's bad haircut? Oh my God, Cap, yes I hacked their comms, they’re my comms.”
Steve nearly opened his mouth to protest that he hadn’t said anything when he realized that this replica of Tony Stark wasn’t speaking to him.
Note: Future Tony and Steve accidentally traveling in the past!
  Character from the Past travels to the Future
hold the things you wanna say by SailorChibi
Summary: Tony is still a consultant, and between SI, the team and SHIELD he's overworked and exhausted. That's okay.
He and Steve have been having sex for weeks but that's all it is, just sex, and Tony wants more but he'll never get it and that's okay. Really.
What's not okay is the fact that Howard Stark has somehow appeared in the future and is the same as always.
This is definitely going to fuck up his schedule.
Note: ANGST! READY YOUR TISSUES.
Twice Upon a Time by TsaritsaElena
Summary: Tony Stark has never had an easy relationship with his father, but when Howard Stark circa 1983 time travels to the future in a freak accident, things get even more complicated, especially since Tony is dating his dad’s idol, Captain America, and Howard doesn’t know. As they work toward a solution that will restore Howard to his own timeline, will Tony get a second chance at a father-son relationship with his dad, or is he in for more of the same unforgiving treatment from Howard? Time travel, Avengers missions, and a secret project of Howard’s: things at Stark Tower are about to get a little crazy.
Note: SOME MORE ANGST AND HOWARD TRAVELLING TO THE FUTURE.
The Future Is Ours (Whether We Want It Or Not) by ann2who
Summary: After a hit from the Time Stone, Steve switches places with his future self.
Note: Another of Steve traveling to the future! Though this time, it features both timeline! Both POV of the past and future!
Ordinary Men by RiaRose
Summary: "Aren't you at all happy to see me?" Howard shot back, holding his glass out and pointing with his index finger. At Steve's stony face, he dropped his arm. "Want a glass?" he tried, picking up an empty tumbler, "This is good stuff."
"Tony doesn't skimp on - well - anything. And no, thank you."
"Was that Tony?" he queried, gesturing toward the hallway the other man had disappeared down. Steve nodded but didn't give any more information, so Howard repeated his earlier question, "Aren't you happy to see me?"
It took Steve a moment to answer. Howard could see his jaw working.
"No, not anymore."
OR
In which Howard travels to the future and just messes up everybody's day, Steve is conflicted, and Tony is a piping hot mess, as per usual. It's not going to be easy, but Steve and Tony have to somehow navigate through Howard's arrival and the strain it puts on their relationship.
Note: From the summary alone, you can tell that THIS WILL BE ANGSTY.
To Have My Time Again... by WilmaKins
Summary: It's been two years since Siberia, and Tony Stark is still dealing with the fallout - personal and political. Life is quite complicated enough, without Bruce falling through a wizards roof yelling that Thanos is coming.
Thor and Loki are stalling, but time is running out. The fate of the universe is at stake. Steve Rogers is back in the picture. Really, the last thing Tony needs is for their plan to go horribly wrong and bring Howard Stark forward in time.
But his Dad *is* standing in his office, whether he likes it or not.
So, it looks like Tony will have to fix that mess too.
Note: There is just something about Howard-travels-to-the-future fanfics.
Howard Stark Meets The Avengers by SerlinaBlack
Summary: Howard Stark unknowingly travels to the future with his son and wife. Luckily the heroes of the future were somewhat ready for it. Unluckily , they don't seem to like him very much
Alternative summery: when will Howard learn? Not now lmao.
Note: ANOTHER ONE.
