A couple of veterans did reach the late noughts with themselves being the same as before, yet this shouldn't be seen as an endorsement. Gong, the original version, were still weird, but there might have been a problem there. 2032 might a bit too self-conscious at the times. Sure, the band like them do notice they have a way of doing things and most collectives like them end up releasing the pastiches of their best work thanks to all their idiosyncrasies. I agree, Gong still surprise you, yet they don't achieve the similar shock like they did in the 70's. I mean, the tune on the link sounds like an old rocker discovering there's a virtual world on the internet. Mind you, the choice of topic isn't wrong, the way they deal with that feels lazy.

Note to Self - Word Balloons: A Study
(No spoilers, don't worry)
14 total comics to compare against, across genres with half as traditionally printed comics and half from webcomics. While not an exhaustive list, should be enough to start to give some idea about preferences.
Text Type: Either fully capitalized (EXAMPLE) or with mixed case (Example)
All Caps versus Mixed Case
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mixed Case vs. ALL CAPS for all comics
Tumblr media
Mixed Case vs. ALL CAPS for Traditional Printed Comics AND for all webcomics (same results)
Tumblr media
A slight preference for the traditional method of writing out word balloons with text in all caps
Spacing Between Text and Outer Balloons
Min Spacing versus Regular Spacing versus Max Spacing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spacing between text and outer balloon for all comics
Tumblr media
Traditional comics are basically evenly split between a normal spacing (about the width of a letter) and min spacing (which leaves essentially no room between the text and the balloon)
Traditional comics slightly tend toward a minimizing the spacing between the text and the balloon
Tumblr media
Spacing between text and outer balloons for webcomics
Webcomics are split between between a normal spacing (about the width of a letter) and extra spacing (which can sometimes double or triple the distance between the text and the balloon). Webcomics slightly tend towards adding additional space between the text and the word balloon
Tumblr media
Word Balloons Within or Outside the Panels
Within Panel versus Outside Panel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whether word balloon (typically) lie entirely within or can exist outside the strict space of the panel
Tumblr media
This is perhaps the most obvious difference between webcomics and traditional comics. All traditional comics in this set only have word balloons that lie within the panel, while all the webcomics typically have there word balloons lie outside their panels
Conclusion
As reductive as it sounds, the overall conclusion is that any combination of word balloon choices are well represented in both traditional and webcomics. The only noticeable difference is that webcomics tend to take greater advantage of the negative space between panels by moving their word ballons out of the panel borders

what are your top 5 lore teams
the habs -> 24 cups, basically every Legendary Goalie ever (except hasek and brodeur lmao) is tied to them in some way (inCLUDING tretiak who was drafted by them but never played because of [unrelated cska drama]), the Richard brothers, Lafleur, Cournoyer, made the Cup finals 10 years straight, deeply symbolic of the general political identity of Quebec and Francophone Canada esp in regard to its relationship with English Canada (evidenced by the habs-leafs rivalry), etc
the red wings -> the first great one in Gordie, the gordie/ted relationship and the creation of the nhlpa, the dead wings and delvecchio, getting the guy you didn't really want at fourth overall but he turned out to be -- well -- Steve Yzerman (whose entire legacy basically shaped the idea of the chivalrous bold-hearted leader), sergei fedorov and the russian five, nick lidstrom and pavel datsyuk
the leafs -> conn smythe, the first team in all of professional sports to retire numbers, bill barilko disappeared that summer... he was on a fishing trip... borje salming and the beginning of europeans in the nhl, darryl sittler, harold ballard the worst man on the entire goddamn planet, mats sundin and the gretzky high-stick, the decade of darkness, mitch marner and auston matthews, william nylander, "not everyday you can live out a childhood dream," sixty years without a cup
the oilers -> the pesky edmonton oilers. messier, kurri, coffey. the legacy of the wha and the merger and the teenager they called The Great One a decade before he put on the blue and orange. decades of darkness. three first overall picks in a row. draisaitl; mcdavid. the best power-play the nhl has ever seen. nothing to show for it in a long time.
you could argue for more than a few teams here. bruins, rangers, and blackhawks all original six teams. penguins have also had two great ones. islanders had a dynasty. i say canucks though -> tiger williams and stan smyl. larionov and bure. the twins. luongo. two cup finals, lost at the last second. two riots. hughes and petterson.

Jason Wilson at The Guardian:
A Guardian investigation has identified former University of California, Irvine (UCI) lecturer Jonathan Keeperman as the man behind the prominent “new right” publishing house Passage Press and the influential Twitter persona Lomez. The identification is based on company and property records, source interviews and open-source online materials. The reporting has revealed that Keeperman’s current status as a key player and influential tastemaker in a burgeoning proto-fascist movement came after years of involvement in far-right internet forums.
Much of that journey coincided with his time at one of the country’s most well-regarded writing programs: Keeperman first came to UCI as a master of fine arts (MFA) student, and was also a lecturer in the English department from 2013 to 2022, according to public records. The emergence of Passage Press and other such publishers has been a key part of the development of a swathe of the current American far right, which is seeking to capture US institutions – or develop far-right equivalents – as part of a political and cultural war against what it sees as the dominance of a liberal “regime” in America. In a June 2023 podcast interview, Keeperman characterized Passage Press and its literary prize as part of this effort to “build out alternative infrastructure, alternative institutions”.
It is a fight wholeheartedly embraced by Donald Trump and his supporters in the Republican party, especially in their railing against “the deep state” and promises of retribution should Trump win the 2024 presidential election. The Guardian repeatedly contacted Keeperman requesting comment on this reporting, at a personal Gmail address and a Passage Press address, and left a voicemail message at a telephone number that data brokers listed as belonging to Keeperman, but which carried a message identifying it as belonging to a member of his household.
[...]
Scary ideas – and wanting to be recognized
Passage Press books include a Tucker Carlson-blurbed anthology of writings by “human biodiversity” influencer Steve Sailer; a similar retrospective from “neo-reactionary” guru Curtis Yarvin; and a print version of the biannual Man’s World. Like many other far-right publishers, Passage’s list is bolstered by reprints of out-of-print or public-domain books by historical fascist and reactionary writers. These include books by radical German nationalist and militarist Ernst Jünger; Peter Kemp, who fought as a volunteer in Franco’s army during the Spanish civil war; and two counter-revolutionary Russian aristocrats, White Russian general Pyotr Wrangel and Prince Serge Obolensky.
[...] Passage Press differs from many others in its niche in offering new work by the contemporary far-right’s intellectual celebrities, and in curating in-person events and a far-right literary award. The publisher also produces high-end limited editions of selected titles. The “patrician edition” of Noticing, a book by Sailer, for example, is “bound in genuine leather, gold-foil stamping” and “Smyth-sewn book block”, according to the website. Though lavishly produced, the “patrician” offerings appear to have generated significant income for Passage. At the time of reporting, Passage had sold out its limited run of 500 patrician editions of Noticing at $395 apiece, according to the website. This equates to some $195,000 in revenue. An earlier patrician edition of winning entries in the 2021 Passage prize sold 250 editions at $400 apiece, according to the website, representing another $100,000 in revenue. The publication of Noticing – also available as a $29.95 paperback – was spun out into a series of in-person events in Austin, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City, held in March, April and May.
The Guardian reveals that the identity of far-right X account Lomez belongs to UCLA lecturer Jonathan Keeperman.

TRAP (2024)
Starring Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills, Alison Pill, Jonathan Langdon, Mark Bacolcol, Marnie McPhail, Kid Cudi, Russ, Marcia Bennett, Vanessa Smythe, Lochlan Miller, Steve Boyle, David D'Lancy Wilson, James Gomez, Nadine Hyatt, Michael Brown, Hailey Summer, Olivia Barrett, Allison Ference and M. Night Shyamalan.
Screenplay by M. Night Shyamalan.
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan.
Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. 105 minutes. Rated PG-13.
It’s been a long time since anyone expected anything even approaching realism in a film by M. Night Shyamalan, but even for him, his latest film Trap rides upon a head-scratching number of coincidences and unrealistic plot points.
Even the basic premise of the film makes little sense. The FBI picks up on the fact that a vicious serial killer known as the Butcher will be going to a pop concert by a huge new teen superstar, and they decide to use the show – with its thousands of innocent bystanders, mostly young girls and their mothers – as a trap to capture the guy. Once the show starts, no one can leave the venue until they are interrogated by the law.
First things first – how do they know that this killer, who they have no name for or description of – will be at this show? (Towards the end of the film, the film does sort of explain away why they believe this, but honestly it kind of feels like a scriptwriter’s cop out.)
However, if they do truly believe he will be there, how is this trap supposed to work? There are about 3,000 adult men in the concert. They have no idea what he looks like, who he is, why he is there. All they know for sure is that he is very good at appearing normal and avoiding capture. Are they really planning on having in-depth interrogations of all the guys in the place before allowing anyone to leave? That would take hours or days. And even if they did that, how would they really know who was the murderer?
Then, when the actual killer recognizes the increased police presence, in another extremely unlikely plot point, he is able to get a stranger who he has just met – perhaps the most indiscreet merchandise worker in the world, to tell him exactly what the police plan is. Hell, the guy even gives him the secret password for employees to be able to move around the venue undisturbed by police. Now is that good luck, or just lazy writing?
That is not even touching on the super whopper of a coincidence in which a character (played by Shyamalan himself) essentially gives the killer the opportunity to possibly escape from the supposedly “unescapable” trap.
So, let’s face it, Trap will strain your credibility mercilessly. You won’t buy most of what it is selling. Which is not to say it’s necessarily a bad film. It does have some very good parts mixed in and a truly fantastic performance by Josh Hartnett as the normal goofy suburban father who is hiding the heart of a killer.
You just really won’t buy the story for a second. But, okay, allowing Shyamalan his premise, what does work?
Well, as noted before, Harnett continues his stealthy comeback with a terrific performance in the lead role. Hartnett is onscreen almost the entire running time of Trap, and even when what his character is saying or doing doesn’t make total sense, he sells it.
Also surprisingly good is the director’s daughter, Saleka Shyamalan, as pop star Lady Raven. When you hear of the casting it reeks of nepo-baby casting, particularly so quickly after he co-produced her sister’s debut film The Watchers. In the early scenes, it feels like Lady Raven is going to be a one-note character observed from afar, but as things move on and she becomes more integral to the plot, Saleka does surprisingly well. Even the music, which was written and performed by the actress, is better than you may expect.
The film also has a strong claustrophobic vibe, taking place almost entirely in one stadium.
Also, while you can see the ending coming from a mile away, for a change M. Night Shyamalan doesn’t try to leave things off with one last huge twist that makes the things that happened before even more ridiculous than they could be. The ability to finally let an ending happen organically may be Shyamalan’s biggest filmmaking Improvement in Trap.
