CBS Ghosts - Hello! - The Game Continues

OMG SAM!  

Poor Steve!  We know that Sam is USUALLY much nicer when it comes to people, but at this point, it has been at least a day and she’s SO PISSED that she doesn’t care about offending them.  In fact, she probably wants to be rude enough that they DON'T want to be around her.

The look on her face when she realizes that she just insulted the cable guy is like “OMG”. She feels so bad, and poor Steve... they both have no idea what's going on.

Aww, Jay’s just like “Real person, right here.”   He doesn't get it at all, I wonder if he doesn't believe Sam about the ghosts since he can't really understand.

Totally over the whole ‘ghost things’.  Oh, Jay, you have no idea.

THOR! What are you doing, bro?  He’s just yelling and cursing everyone and Sam’s just like ‘GOD I LOOK SO STUPID’.  

Don't worry, Sam that never goes away. Poor Sam.

Poor Sam.  It’s just so terrible for her to be put in this position.

I am amused that Thor’s so easily distracted - OOOOH, My Kin!

And then, he completely forgets the mission and just watches TV.

Okay, Let me get this straight.  Pete’s just waiting for her and trying to stalk her around the house - clearly the most into this next to Sass and yet... he’s just happy to do it?  Wonder why?

Is he thinking long-term? Is he thinking that just getting her to acknowledge them is enough?

I love this moment.  You can clearly see Sam’s resolve fading when she answers Pete and then, when he sees Alberta, he’s like “Oh, time to pass her off”.  It’s almost like they’ve organized some sort of game here. I wonder how they decided that or it was just a tag game. "Tag, you're it!"

Alberta’s still stuck on trying to figure out who murdered her and apparently thinking that Sam would have a murder mystery dinner party.  

Okay, Alberta - say Sam agrees, why do you think ANYONE alive would be able to answer the question?  It's been 93 years. You think whoever did it wrote a diary or something?  Would their descendent randomly tell some stranger just for - fun?  Like how do you think this would work?

I REALLY need to know.

It's amazing given these facts that Sam does solve it (albeit, one of the ghosts is harboring the secret making it easier).

Alright - this is interesting.  It was Trevor’s idea, but this is the ONLY time that he tries to be a part of it and it doesn’t seem like he is trying to drive her crazy like the others.

I THINK he genuinely thinks there’s a connection with her - maybe it’s the idea that the fall connected them.  Maybe it’s just that he’s always wanted someone to connect with again - like he says later on in JS or Maybe it’s that he’s excited to have someone knew around.  

Despite the fact that she’s married and he’s a ghost - he wants there to be a connection and it does make some sense that he might be feeling something and hopeful that she does, too. 

Unfortunately, he’s headed for heartbreak and over the line, but I think being dead has definitely impacted why he’s just like ‘aren’t you feeling something?’ despite the obvious reasons nothing can happen.  

Trevor’s my focus, so I’ll get into it later but he has a very interesting arc when it comes to his LI and what he wants and it starts here with Sam and it goes through many different interests (quite surprising number when you think about it) throughout the two seasons and we learn why along the way.  

And I’m excited to get into it later, but I feel for both Sam and Trevor here.

A (comparatively) Brief Thought about Steve Harrington's Names

Lucky Stevie has full names in three different languages and they're all equally incriminating in different ways!

For context: Steve's parents meet just as the summer of '66 is ending, in a perfectly legitimate bar with absolutely no connection to organised crime in Chicago. They introduce themselves as Christopher (call me Chris, Christopher is shite) Harrington and Anita (but you, bello, can call me Tina) Martino. They are both lying.

See, America is it's own little world. Founded by desperate refugees and religious extremists, the USA is the New York of the western world - the perfect place to disappear, because no matter your sins, there's always someone weirder. And in this totally not shady bar in Chicago, these two strangers have a lot of sins.

Mr. Ciarán Ótis Marcin Ó'hArrachtáin is what some might call a terrorist. Those 'some' are, of course, all eejits who seem to be fecking delirah with the Brits treating the Irish Free State as a colony. But Ótis and Martyna didn't raise a spineless dosser, not on tales of the shite they saw in Nazi Poland. Ciarán wants to be just like his mama, so does the only thing he can at sweet sixteen and joins the IRA. It was a grand old time - until some spanner decided to start the boarder campaign, make some things go boom, then it all goes arseways and suddenly he's a wanted man. Now he's legged it all the way out to this bar in Chicago where he can find some mostly-legal work, set himself up as someone who doesn't need to check over his shoulder every five seconds - and maybe he can take a chance on this absolute ride of an Italian who's just walked in, Jaysus -

Sig.na Alessia Stefania "Pieterina" Serafini has made a name for herself as a mafiosa. Beloved, wild, ruthless granddaughter of Don Alessio - caporegime since nineteen and well on her way to consigliere - and, right now, in molti problemi with la Cosa Nostra. So much problemi that she's been effectively smuggled into the US, like that goddamn heroin shipment that started all these problemi... ah well. She just needs to lie low for a bit (a decade) with her American cousins on the less than legal side of Chicago before she can return to her cosca and the people she actually trusts not to stab her the moment she turns her back - and maybe she can have some fun with this bello, bello Irishman who's looking her way, dannazione -

So. Discussing the evolution Mr and Mrs Harrington's relationship is gonna have to wait (though I'd love to hear from you guys) - the important thing here is the family history.

Tina's side: Alessia Stefania "Pietrina" Serafini.

Tina's father is Vincenzo Serafini and her grandfather is Alessio Serafini. Her first name is the feminine of her paternal grandfather's name. Steve's middle names are also from them.

(In case it wasn't obvious, the Serafini family are heavily involved in the Italian mafia - potentially involved in the Ciaculli massacre in '63 - and also have ties to the American mafia.)

Tina's mother is Pietra Tedesco and her grandmother is Stefania Tedesco. Her middle name - Stefania - and her son's first name - Stefano - are from her maternal grandmother. "Pietrina" is a diminutive nickname for Pietra - they're saying she's just like her mother, and since they figured this would be easy and natural enough for Steve to remember, his agreed Italian 'cover' surname is Di Pietro.

(Pietra is the feminine of her father's Petri Tedesco - which is itself the new name chosen by the German runaway Peter Thälmann. No relation to German Communist Party Leader Ernst Thälman, no sir, nothing to see here.)

So: Stefano Alessio Vincenzo Serafini - or, when he doesn't want to advertise the mafia part - Stefano Di Pietro.

Chris' side: Ciarán Ótis Marcin Ó'hArrachtáin.

Chris' father is Ótis Ó'hArrachtáin, and his paternal grandparents Steafán and Keira Ó'hArrachtáin. He gets his first name from the masculine of his grandmother's name, his middle name from his father, and gave Steve his grandfather's name.

(Steafán and Keira worked their asses off their whole life to put their kids through school, ennabling Ótis to work at the Irish embassy in Poland, where he managed to smuggle a handful of refugees past the Nazis to Britain, of which his future wife, Hannia Marcinkiewicz, was one.)

Chris' mother is Anita Marcinkiewicz. He gets his middle name from her surname. Steve gets his Irish 'cover' surname from that.

(Anita and her son are very similar as teenagers and young adults - the same heady cocktail of jaded rage and a naïve sense of justice, motivating spiky teens in parallel shitty situations to commit near-suicidal acts of heroism, with similar results. Just what did Anita do? Nothing you can prove, of course...)

(Yes, Anita Marcinkiewicz and Anita Martino - a wild coincidence that kicks of conversation for our young lovers in Chicago. Not in any way manipulated by an omnipotent fangirl who wants her OCs to have something neat to make slightly awkward but unexpectedly wholesome small talk about over a Guinness and a Negroni in a bar in Chicago). (This is why Chris calls his wife Tina all the time when anyone else would get shot if she's feeling anything less than saccharine.)

So: Steofán Ciarán Ótis Ó'hArrachtáin - or, when he'd rather avoid any connection to the wanted terrorist - Steofán Ó Máirtín.

The point is, he's Catholic as fuck. He can be non-practicing and still Catholic (bc fuckboi), he can lose his faith and still be Catholic (bc interdimensional hell monsters), he can be an atheist (bc Irish) and still be Catholic, ok - he is Italian and Irish, there's no cure.

So, yeah, he's definitely been christened. And sure, you can old give any old name to the government (fuck them anyways) as long as it suits your purposes. But your christening name is the one that God knows you by, okay, you don't want to lie to the priest and end up with the wrong name tag when you get to heaven (or if, I guess).

What I'm saying is the paperwork says Steven Otis Harrington, but some poor Father/Reverendo gets hit with Stefano Stiofán Alessio Ciarán Vincenzo Ótis Serafini Ó'hArrachtáin. Good fucking luck!

Storia Di Musica #327 - U2, The Unforgettable Fire, 1984

L'ultimo edificio di questa piccola carrellata di dischi che ne hanno uno in copertina ci porta nella Contea di Westmeath, nel cuore d'Irlanda, con le rovine di un castello, quello di Moydrum, situato nei pressi della cittadina di Athlone. Lì quattro ragazzi irlandesi, insieme a quello che diventerà il loro amico e fotografo per i successivi quattro decenni, Anton Corbijn, posano per la copertina di un disco che nelle loro intenzioni doveva rappresentare una svolta concettuale e musicale. È facile d'altronde mettere a confronto le prime copertine degli U2 con questa, e rilevarne la differenza concettuale: lo sguardo dolce di Peter Rowen, il fratellino di Guggi, amico di Bono, che capeggia in Boy (1980), la band ripresa in October (1981) sullo sfondo il porto di Dublino, e lo sguardo, rabbioso e drammatico, dello stesso Peter Rowen in War (1983, una delle copertine più iconiche del decennio). Dopo il tour di War, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton e Larry Mullen Jr. cercano una svolta. Bono, con una mossa che riprenderà anche in futuro, annunciò all'ultimo concerto di quel tour che la band necessitava di "essere sciolta".

Un rinnovamento che passa da un nuovo approccio alla composizione e da una guida in produzione musicale che sia diversa da Steve Lillywhite, che li aveva seguiti nei primi tre capitoli della loro storia. The Edge, affascinato dai suoi lavori discografici e dal suo ruolo di produttore per i Talking Heads, chiede di contattare Brian Eno. La scelta non sembrava affatto sensata: una band sanguigna, epica, con il guru della musica ambient, della sottrazione emotiva. Lo stesso Chris Blackwell, il proprietario della Island, la casa discografica che li aveva scoperti, era scettico. E lo stesso Eno all'inizio lo era. Ma l'ascolto del loro live Under The Red Blood Sky lo convinse a provare. Porta con sé un tecnico del suono geniale, anch'egli musicista, il canadese Daniel Lanois, incaricato degli aspetti materiali e tecnici delle registrazioni, e indica alla band un orizzonte che se ancorato alla passione, all'epica, alla forza della loro musica originaria, la amplia in scenari vasti, che diluiscono i colori e regalano emozioni nuove all'ascolto.

Registrato nella sala di ballo, trasformata in studio di registrazione, di un altro castello, lo Slane Castle, e presso gli studi di Windmill Lane a Dublino, The Unforgettable Fire prende il nome dal titolo di una mostra fotografica itinerante giapponese sui disastri di Hiroshima e Nagasaki, che i quattro videro al The Peace Museum di Chicago. È una sensazione diversa ascoltare il suono, ricco, cinematografico, di A Sort Of Homecoming che apre la scaletta. Un suono arioso, sostenuto, con l'abbandono della batteria "militaresca" dei lavori precedenti, la chitarra di The Edge che inizia a disegnare paesaggi luminosi, il supporto robusto del basso di Clayton e Bono che si lancia nella descrizione di paesaggi spirituali niente male: hai fame di tempo\tempo per guarire e desiderare, del tempo\e senti la terra muoversi sotto di te\il paesaggio di sogno che hai creato (...) le mura della città sono cadute\la polvere, un velo di fumo tutt'intorno\volti arati come i campi che un tempo\ non opponevano resistenza. Dello stesso tenore, con quest'aggiunta espressionista, sono Wire (addirittura pensata solo come abbozzo nel testo, e registrata con Bono che in parte improvvisa durante il canto) la spettacolare The Unforgettable Fire, e Indian Summer Sky, che è l'espressione anglofona per l'Estate di San Martino. Canzoni che tra l'altro sfuggono alla struttura classica con la ripetizione del ritornello, spesso non citano il titolo nel testo e entusiasmano, spesso ancora oggi, per il lavoro di addizione sonora e di sensazioni che lasciano. Ma è un album che contiene tanto altro: due strumentali, 4th Of July (che è il giorno della nascita della prima figlia di The Edge, e registrata quasi di nascosto da Eno mentre Clayton e il chitarrista improvvisavano) e MLK, dedicato a Martin Luther King, al quale è dedicato anche il brano simbolo del disco, e primo singolo dell'opera, Pride (In The Name Of Love), il cui video musicale fu girato nella sala da ballo allestita a studio di registrazione dello Slane Castle. C'è la poesia dolce e fluttuante di Promenade, un gioiellino che racconta il flusso di pensieri durante una passeggiata, c'è l'esperimento di Elvis Presley And America: basata sulla traccia base rallentata di A Sort of Homecoming, è una improvvisazione canora di Bono, che immagina il Re, ormai sul viale del tramonto, che ricorda il suo passato, specialmente il suo rapporto con Priscilla, e fu una single take lasciata così, grezza e con la voce che dà la sensazione di un'eco più lontana e oscura. Rimane un ultimo grande pezzo: Bad fu scritta da Bono in ricordo di un suo compagno di scuola morto di overdose da eroina il giorno del suo 21° compleanno, è drammatica nel suo crescendo emotivo e diviene una sorta di prototipo di stile U2\Eno\Lanois. Diventerà uno dei momenti clou dei concerti negli anni a seguire.

Un disco dalle tinte sfocate, dai paesaggi sonori sfumati, dalla musicalità complessa poteva sembrare un azzardo per una band considerata così sanguigna. Invece fu un successo: primo disco degli U2 al primo posto della classifica britannica, in top ten in quella americana, e soprattutto la sensazione che la piantina musicale che qui nasce crescerà subito e velocemente, per certi versi in maniera fragorosa, per cambiare il volto alla musica dei decenni a venire. Ma probabilmente questo non lo sapevano ancora.

The best AUs, for me, are those in which the characters are still themselves, in a different setting - *informed* by that different setting. Like, they're not just transplanted, but the author took time and care to really dig into "how would this character be if they were *here* instead of there? What changes would that bring, and what would stay the same?" This is one such AU. I don't know how often I've read this; a dozen times? More? It is atmospheric, so well-written, long, completed; one of the masterpieces of this fandom, I daresay.

And also, Myka's endearment for Helena is SWAGGER. Like, endearments are always difficult, but SWAGGER. I will never be over that.
