If The Avenger looks eerily similar to his fellow Street & Smith pulp hero, Doc Savage, it's because the model used for this painting is actor Steve Holland. Holland was the model used by artist James Bama for his famous Doc Savage paperback covers.

Me: Oh god, for some reason, I thought he got one near the end. That's horrible then.

Brother: I wish I was in charge of banners because there would be a Bruno banner.

Me: The whole stadium would be FT and Steve banners.

The Steve Holland Centennial

Born 100 years ago today, actor and male model Steve Holland (1925-1997). Holland wasn’t a body builder to the extent Steve Reeves was, but, like that other Steve, he was associated with hero characters. He has been called the most in-demand male art model of the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. Originally from Seattle, Holland had served in the Merchant Marine and been a manual laborer for a time before…

Artist James Bama’s original painting of Doc Savage for the Bantam Books 1964 edition of The Man of Bronze.  This is the first of 62 covers of the 96-book series that Bama would paint.

Steve Holland, star of a short-lived Flash Gordon television series in the 1950s, was Bama’s model of choice, given his rugged features and physique.  As seen in the painting, Bama matched Holland’s hair closely to give Doc a more realistic look.  It also closely resembles how Doc was pictured in the original pulp series and comic books.

However, Bantam’s art director, Len Leone, who was a big Doc Savage fan, didn’t want “normal” hair for Doc; he wanted a look that conveyed that Doc was no ordinary man.

Doc’s hair is described in the pulps as a darker shade of bronze than his skin, and that Doc usually wore it combed back so that it resembled a skullcap made of bronze.  Leone wanted that look.  He also mandated a widow’s peak which he said had been mentioned in the pulps; this a matter of small controversy because many fans don’t recall anything about the widow’s peak ever being mentioned.

Nevertheless, Bama did as he was told by his boss, and changed Doc’s hair in the painting.

Thus was born the iconic Doc Savage look that has prevailed to this day.

The Big Bang Theory has not only spawned a spin-off — Young Sheldon — but also a spin-off of a spin-off, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. And talk of another Big Bang Theory spin-off making the rounds has fans very excited. Of course, the show still has a long way to go before it catches up to All In the Family, which had seven other shows in its family tree, but who knows? Maybe it could get there someday.  Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage executive producers Steven Molaro and Steve Holland spoke about the prospects of more spin-offs, they said they’re not even focusing on the spin-off aspect as they write and produce their new show.

George & Mandy’s First Marriage airs Thursdays at 8/7c on CBS, and episodes start streaming the following day on Paramount+.
