I cosplayed as Gardiner from Wolf Hall (and real life, but this was specifically the Wolf Hall TV series version) at a Renn Faire (which one? oooooh mysteryyy) this past weekend:

The hat (a Canterbury Cap, pattern by me and sewing by my mom, the only high-effort part of an outfit otherwise composed of random stuff I already owned) was a little wonky, we adjusted it after the Faire. I mostly wanted to do this because I thought Gardiner doing normal modern activities while dressed like this would be funny. Someone confidently identified me to a friend as the princess from A Knight's Tale, who, to be fair, also has a funny headdress.
Cromwell, get up wake up. You fucked up big time

None of the sexual/horny subtexts in Wolf Hall will ever come close to the sexual tension of Thomas pressing his hand against Stephen's ribs in an attempt to threaten him. Like, even the way they speak to one another and the tension of the conversation...I love them so much.

What people want, above all, is order.
- Stephen Gardiner (1483 – 1555)
...that and for British trains to run on time.

Anne Boleyn & Elizabeth I by Tracy Borman
So far the book reminded me to these insane things:
1 Stephen Gardiner forged a fake warrant to kill Elizabeth. And all he got for it was a slap on his wrist.
2 Anne tried to name her daughter Mary... These are my daughters Mary and Mary.
3 Thomas Howard and Anne Boleyn visited baby Elizabeth, and Norfolk slipped away to say hi to Mary.
4 The father of Jane Boleyn was some kind of scholar.
Bonus: Not from the book but recently hit me that John Foxe was in the Howard household (hired by Mary Howard) until Norfolk came out of the Tower. And one of his first things was to kick him out. Which is understandable.

Mary herself had been living with assassination threats since September, and it was a mark of her courage and flair for rulership that she continued to appear in public ceremonies and court audiences as freely as if no danger existed. [...] A week before Parliament dissolved Mary’s courtiers were seriously frightened. As the queen was passing through a gallery on her way to vespers, accompanied by Elizabeth and a number of others, an unseen voice cried out loudly “Treason!” The courtiers scattered, but Mary, unperturbed by the alarm, went on into the chapel to hear the office. It was later found that the accusation was meant for Gardiner, and came from a man the bishop had imprisoned many years earlier for writing a treatise in defense of Katherine of Aragon; but at the time no one doubted that the cry was directed at the queen. Elizabeth was so frightened she turned pale and “could not compose her countenance.” She was amazed, she said, that Mary had not retired to safety after receiving such a warning, given the danger of an attack on her person. Elizabeth herself could not stop trembling, and had to get Susan Clarencieux to rub her stomach until the color came back to her face and she was able to join Mary at the altar.

Bryan strained every nerve on his cousin's behalf, 'first,' as he said, 'by fair means and afterwards by foul.' Anne wanted nothing left to chance. A fortnight after Christmas, as Bryan was arriving in Rome, she persuaded Henry to send Stephen Gardiner to reinforce him. He too departed at once and, like Bryan, he was to correspond with Anne independently of Henry.

Doing my bit getting those viewer numbers up rewatching becoming Elizabeth on channel 4
And I just realised Dudley pushing Gardiner down the stairs is made better (for lack of a better word lol) by the fact that historically John had slapped him at a council meeting late in Henry’s reign. so it’s like that push down the steps was years of irritation in the making

I realized this was purely a power move for Stephen. This conversation had no actual benefit to him, if anything, it benefitted Thomas more than it did Stephen, but he still wanted to rile Thomas up. He still wanted to show Thomas that he had power over him in a way Thomas didn't even realize. He has power over him in a way not even Henry does. Stephen finding a connection to his past and making him question his relationship with the man who abused him has undone him in a way no one else has. He has Thomas literally reflecting back on everything.
Thomas thought that Stephen found dirt on him, and even if it seemed as if he did, it was fruitless in the end. But still, Stephen wanted to put him on edge. They both threatened each other here, granted, Thomas has offered Stephen many olive branches, but Stephen is Stephen.
Regardless, the idea of Stephen leaving Thomas speechless, and laughing as he's walking away - omg. He is the only one who can do that to Thomas, the only one who can leave him dumbfounded in such a way that he questions his relationship with Walter and his life leading up to that point.

I hate to say it but Thomas is very responsible for the breakdown and spoiled friendship between he and Stephen more than Stephen actually is. Like, i think Thomas created a monster when he worked against Stephen and humiliated him, and refused to stand up for him.
I'm not saying he deserved to be killed, but he created the monster that ended up killing him

'If you try to force me to take a husband who would not be to my liking, you would cause my death, for if I were to be married against my will, I would not live three months and would have no children, and then you would be sorry!' she warned somewhat dramatically. 'Is it suitable to expect me to marry someone just because the Bishop has made friends with him in prison?' 'What will the people say?' Gardiner asked her. 'They will never stomach a foreigner who will make promises that he cannot keep.' 'My mind is made up,' answered the Queen, 'and if you, my Lord Chancellor, prefer the will of the people to my wishes, then you are not keeping your promises.'
