Q: favourite Tudor myth/legend/old wives tale/piece of propaganda that has in recent years been debunked?

A: the ongoing fascination and legend making surrounding Anne Boleyn. I simply find the notion that one can still hold that much power in the popular imagination 400+ years after one’s death fascinating.

That weird historian thing where you see certain portraits so much in books/TV/online that you sort of forget they’re actually real things that exist in the world. Saw the “Armada Portrait” of Elizabeth I in person in Greenwich last month.

특히 기도서의 한 구절을 보면 글쓴이가 신의 벌을 받아 몸이 쇠약해졌다는 대목이 나오는데 당시 50대였던 헨리 8세의 건강 상태가 좋지 않았다는 점에 주목해야 한다고 화이트 교수는 짚었다. 스페인 왕실 출신의 첫 번째 부인인 캐서린(카탈리나)을 저버리고 앤 불린과 결혼하기 위해 교회를 두 동강 냈던 일로 죗값을 치르게 될까 노심초사했던 것으로 추정된다는 설명이다.
