Beetlejuice. BEETLEJUICE. BEEEETLEJUICE!
We got a new movie, don't we? Well why not some fan art, eh? The animated series had one of the greatest theme songs in the history of animated television. Cowboy Bebop set an insurmountably high bar for GOAT, but even so.
Check out the time lapse video below, with some classic theme music!

I'll say it as many times as you want, BJ! 💚
Finally done! Drawing with an iPad is such a different, weird experience for me, but I like how this turned out. Actually got the idea for it while trying to sketch a bit in the theater before seeing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice the second time. Glad to finally have it finished.

you’ve made me start to listen to the demo tracks, and i love you so much (/p) this was the best decision of my life i think
Glad to hear! the demos are def fantastic. Rip Mama Would Also lowkey love Eddie Perfect's Beej, I know he doesn't really do anything crazy but he has that innate texture to his voice that really works for me.

i keep getting amazed by how starkly different betelgeuse and lydia’s dynamic is in the movie versus the cartoon. what do you mean one was based on the other? how did we get “that WAS you stalking me!” from the same source material as “you’re one of a kind, beetlejuice. don’t ever change.”
yeah it happens
it seems like they decided on making a beetlejuice animated series first, and then they tried to figure out how to make it kid friendly. there's this interview that says stephen ouimette's first beetlejuice voices were very close to keaton's in the movie, but that they felt there was something very off about having an "evil creepy guy with a goth girl in the attic" and that was when they decided to soften the character. ouimette did a lighter and funnier voice and that alone was enough for them to feel like he wasn't a threat and the goth girl was safe around him. and i guess things just took off from there as they figured out the characters. it IS a children's cartoon, and being ran by abc at the time they had to keep things cute and wholesome. tim burton was very involved in the creation process (as much as he could while working on batman) so having bj and lydia be friends instead of enemies was pretty much his choice. but again, kids cartoon ran by abc. and that's why we have sugary sweet quotes like the one you said.
seems like even back then tim has always preferred a more amicable dynamic for those two. we already know him, michael, winona, everyone in the cast wants them to be together to some degree thanks to recent interviews. and i think that is why beetlejuice's character was slightly changed in the sequel, from an evil creepy guy to just....a creepy guy with a crush i guess. point is, they don't want him to be The Bad Guy anymore and that's why the sequel is the way it is.
BUT they can't just make him "not evil" and expect it to work, that would make no sense, he still needs to have this creepy and wrong edge to him, and lydia's not gonna just forgive and forget what happened in the first movie. so, combining allllll these elements, we get this brand new dynamic between them: creepy guy in love with the woman he's been stalking for 30 years (pure insanity but not exactly evil) and woman who's like "ugh not this fucking guy again" but still goes to him for help, begrudgingly. she can't quite get rid of him. they're obviously not enemies anymore and they're not friends either. but now it's a bit more believable for them to reach some sort of amicability, eventually.....perhaps in the third one.....we shall see
AND THAT.......is how we got from this concept
to this concept
and finally this concept.
three entirely different dynamics. three three three. rule of thirds, you know i love it. it's a crazy journey but i think it makes more sense when broken down like this.
musical stuff isn't really part of this journey BUT the musical did help soften people's perception of beetlejuice even MORE, so now pretty much everyone can buy into the idea that he can be more than just an "evil creepy guy," to the point where soooo many people were actually dying to see the two team up and be friends in the sequel.
and now the original movie feels like the outlier. oh the IRON-E ok sorry im not using that pun again

Of all the bullshit I never expected to be back on with the same intensity of October through December of 2000, Beetlejuice was not it. But I finally got to see the musical yesterday, and the part of me that has adored all 94 episodes of the animated series from the moment I started watching them on ABC Saturday mornings in 1989 just fucking flared—this fond, awful tightness in my chest. It’s the first TV show I ever imprinted on; it’s been with me since childhood. Surreal.
About 4 years into watching the cartoon, I finally saw the live-action movie that the cartoon was based on. I hated it, because it was so malevolent and empty compared to the incredible world-building characters in the animated series. Serious shout-outs to Stephen Ouimette and Alyson Court for all that stunning, hilarious, and often moving voicework.
Now, okay, I need to go back to 2000 again to make this all make sense. I’d watched the show from 1989 until whenever the 4th season ended. It wasn’t until I was in my first semester of college, newly transplanted to New England, that I found a couple folks within my program who had loved the show growing up, too. I ordered all of the episodes on VHS. It was difficult to track them all down in 2000, and it was expensive. But I pulled it off, and we had Friday night watch parties for weeks over the month of October. But that is not where this ends.
I was in the process of winding down the writing I’d been doing on Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow for the entirety of my senior year of high school. Suddenly, I’m in college and watching this fucking cartoon and thinking, there is so much heart in this. How the fuck is there so much heart. I haven’t seen two characters this wholesome codependent in, well, ever. I went looking for forums and mailing lists devoted to the cartoon. I found a mailing list. There were a handful of artists drawing amazing fancomics on there, and they were like, what do you do? Oh. I write. And they were like: do you understand how desperately some of us have wanted fic, but just can’t find it?
That is the wrong thing to say to me when I’m on a downward spiral of realizing I’m not going to escape a fandom without getting myself into a project so long that it’s all I’ll be doing for fucking months on end. If you’re one of the people who knew me back then, you know what I did for those four months in the fall/winter of 2000. I wrote a novel. Sure, I came close to failing a couple of classes, but it was the first time I understood exactly what I was capable of building as a fanwriter. Maybe even as a real writer.
“Time Will Tell” was hosted on a friend’s Angelfire site for a handful of years. People found it via LiveJournal, too, because I linked it there. I put it on AO3 somewhere circa 2012 and took it down again in 2017 because I didn’t feel there was enough interest in it, and also, my 19-year-old editorial foibles and typos were aspects I wanted to amend in it.
The musical took more inspiration from the cartoon than the film. I’m stunned and grateful for that. I found the “Time Will Tell” file buried pretty deep in my Gmail folders. I’ve been reading it since the drive home last night. I just can’t believe there’s now enough of a fandom for me to consider finally polishing it and getting it back online. It’s one of my two oldest surviving pieces of writing.
Anyway, sorry for the Gotham fic delays that I’d been trying to get a handle on. Now that the semester’s over, I feel that getting this thing I wrote twenty-three years ago back to the light of day is the best use of my time for a couple weeks.
If you’re one of the people who read “Time Will Tell” back in the day, thank you. I don’t know how many people out there still remember it beyond maybe ten or so friends I’m still in contact with all these years later. I’m sorry it disappeared for a while.
#beetlejuice#beetlejuice the musical#beetlejuice the animated series#lydia deetz can fuck right off for reminding me she was the reason i wrote first-person pov for the first time ever#and can take all the credit for making me feel less alone as a kid#maybe this is why ghosts never scare me; bj is such a delightful dumbass and set my expectations pretty high/low depending

Beetlejuice the Cartoon Series - My Thoughts! (Seasons 1 and 2) ✨️
I decided to write my thoughts about the cartoon as notes in my drafts so I could continue adding on to it as I was watching the series. These are my thoughts for Seasons 1 and 2!
Since I have a lot that I want to say, I will be adding a "read-more" link so you can continue scrolling. Either way, thank you for reading this! ✨️
-
I've seen both intros briefly before jumping into the series, and they are absolutely amazing! However, this part from the first intro to just has to be my favorite... 💚 🖤
I like to think that all versions of Beetlejuice are capable of adding whatever they'd like to their outfit in this manner! ✨️
-
"Well here I am at the Neitherworld Shocking Mall, with grossness wall to wall... but am I shopping for myself? No... I have to buy something for her [Lydia]." (Critter Sitters, Season 1)
Okay... I get the appeal of Toonjuice now.
I mean, I technically have for a little while (watching short YouTube compilations of the show has helped), but there's something about the way Stephen Ouimette plays Beetlejuice that really drives home to me how charming, albeit manipulative, Beetlejuice can be. The way he delivers this line in the show is a good example of that.
I'm also starting to understand how Toonjuice has influenced Musicaljuice's characterization. Both of them begin their respective shows in the same fashion - speaking to the audience. It's something that has honestly become a bit of a comfort for me. Like yeah, this is Beetlejuice.
-
I. Love. Lydia's. Outfits! 💖
I've loved toon Lydia's design since the moment I saw it, but seeing her other outfits truly cements how much I adore her design.
-
"Yeeuck! A cutesy woodland creature!" (Skeletons in the Closet, Season 1)
In some Broadway performances of the musical (based on multiple clips of bootlegs I have found), Alex Brightman, as Beetlejuice, will place a lot more emphasis on his disgust over Lydia's affection towards her mom:
"Why would anyone wanna spend more time with their mother?! YEEUCK!"
The cadence on how he says "yuck" feels reminiscent of Ouimette's version (specifically in the line I had highlighted earlier). I wouldn't be surprised if Alex was inspired by the cartoon for this line.
-
I've talked a bit about Ouimette's voice acting earlier, so I'd like to hand the spotlight over to Alyson Court for a moment-
I really like her take on Lydia! She's makes her feel a lot more lively and enthusiastic in this version! I personally love characterizing Lydia as a little more of an upbeat goth girl in the musical, thanks in part to the cartoon.
-
Before I even jumped into the cartoon series, I was already interested to see how they would depict Lydia's school life. While watching, I was coming up with ideas as to what I would like to see in a potential musical cartoon for Beetlejuice.
Personally, I love the idea of Lydia having best friends who may not understand her strangeness, but still appreciate her for who she is. It's a concept that I could personally connect with. I can also see Claire being in the cartoon reboot, but rewritten to be more inspired by Regina George from the Mean Girls musical instead.
-
I like the dynamic Beetlejuice and Lydia have in the cartoon! Beetlejuice is a chaotic entity, which will occasionally butt heads with Lydia's down-to-earth attitude. Sometimes it can be hard for her to trust Beetlejuice for help, because of the way he approaches things, but it's nice to see the moments where she can appreciate what he has done for her.
He may not be good person, but he will still do whatever it takes to see his best friend happy.
-
I'm in love with Toonjuice's cowboy outfit... 💖
I'm a huge fan of big ascots, and the usage of plain white for the pants, gloves, and hat is a very nice touch! It helps to balance out the stripes on his shirt!
He's my inspiration for Musicaljuice's cowboy design! I just really like the silhouette that this outfit gives!
-
I forgot to mention this earlier, but I now understand Delia's reference to having a cat in the musical! His name is Percy in the cartoon, and I've seen some artists acknowledge him in fanart!
Personally, I believe he passed away long ago... hence why you don't see him in the musical. It was one of Delia's lowest moments in her life, but it was the one that finally pushed her to look at the bright side of things. She believes it's what Percy would've wanted.
I haven't had a chance to draw Delia yet, but if I do, I want her to have a locket with a bunch of crystals around it that holds Percy's picture. 💗 🐈⬛️
-
That concludes my thoughts for Seasons 1 and 2! ✨️
I initially planned to take notes for the entire series in this post, but truth be told... it's been taking me some time to go through the whole show, due to my job and whatnot. With Season 4 being the longest of the series, I will have to come back to this some other time.
That being said... I'm beginning to understand better why a plethora of fans for the musical, especially those who are also fans of the cartoon, express such a great interest in a cartoon reboot.
I joined the fandom with my main interest being the YouTube animatic side of musicals. I've always enjoyed hearing others discuss the process of animation, and I enjoy seeing how it influences character design. Watching this cartoon has made me realize how much of an impact it has made to how we perceive Beetlejuice as a character.
Toonjuice is not only the first instance of a demon-based Beetlejuice, he is also the first instance of a morally grey one. He helped to create the foundation for Musicaljuice, who I believe has shown massive potential for a cartoon series of his own.
The possibility of Beetlejuice the Musical getting its own cartoon series seems to be highly unlikely, but one can only dream...
#rambles#beetlejuice#beetlejuice cartoon#lydia deetz#i originally wanted to make this a bullet point list of notes but i just had a LOT of thoughts for this show#so i decided to give each their own section instead

Ha! I was right. The voice of Beetlejuice in Teen Titans Go is Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice on Broadway). Now that's Meta!
If they do a revival of the Beetlejuice cartoon and can't get Stephen Ouimette (original animated Beetlejuice voice) I want Alex Brightman. He really gets the character.

the old beetlejuice cartoon is so much better than it has any right to be.
I don't know who made the decision to set it in a totally alternate universe from the movie
to age beetlejuice down, completely change his history and personality, make him a goofy stinky nonbinary crustpunk, and their relationship a cute queer ddlg one. Or to give the neitherworld a whole unique setting and lore,
but it was the right decision
if that sounds interesting to you, this episodes good, I'm sure it's on watchcartoononline or similar, the gang forms a punk band and beetlejuice goes femme for it.

Been a while since I posted. But I just want to go on record here and say that I am pretty sick and tired of everyone acting like there isn’t already a Beetlejuice 2. At this point, I will watch the new movie and enjoy it for what it is, personally. But after that, I will continue to ignore its presence and give all my love to the ACTUAL sequel. As of now, the real sequel is beginning to feel to me, almost like a baby that keeps getting left behind, forgotten or abandoned and it hurts to see something I have always loved get treated like that. And before you say “Well, the interest generated from this new movie could reboot the cartoon”, let me tell you that some things are best left as they are. I absolutely love Stephen Ouimette’s Beetlejuice, he is my favorite one. I would be disappointed to see that changed.
