Hanging with Stephen Gallagher
Stephen Gallagher has written novels (LOVE Kingdom of Bones, Chimera, Rain) and television scripts (for Doctor Who — for Rosemary & Thyme, Eleventh Hour, BBC series Murder Rooms, etc.) I’ve known Steve for ages, and in addition to being a brilliant writer, he’s an extremely generous person with a keen wit and wonderful sense of humor. He also makes a good guide round Leeds, where we spent today. Tried to stop at the Book Barge (going to pick up a book by @neil-gaiman to pose with) but it was closed. Sorry Neil! Also went to the art gallery … and discovered we have similar taste in pens.

Radio Times did the clickbait thing here a bit. Gallagher is quoted as saying this in passing, but he does not elaborate, or does the article, so we’re left with the question of whether he’s referring to the rather substandard Series 10, or he’s on the Clara-hate bandwagon, or what. Anyway, it is what it is. Sadly it’s probably going to be used by some folks to keep theit “Capaldi sucked”  or “Capaldi started the downward trend” arguments going in order to avoid laying blame where it is more widely deserved.
The reason why this article exists is Stephen Gallagher wrote Warriors’ Gate for the Fourth Doctor and Terminus for the Fifth (so he was the guy tasked with writing out both Romana and Nyssa). Using the pen name John Lydecker, he wrote the Target Books novelizations for both stories (I remember being shocked because he had Romana say “damn” in the WGate book!). Since then he’s also written some shorter works, including a Telos Novella (remember those?) and some audios. He’ll be publishing a rewritten adaptation of Warriors’ Gate as part of the next set of nuTarget Books scheduled for UK publication in the summer. This set also includes a novelization of the Twelfth Doctor story The Zygon Invasion, incidentally.

Would Stephen Gallagher Return to Write a New Doctor Who Story?
Would Stephen Gallagher Return to Write a New #DoctorWho Story?
Stephen Gallagher has revealed that he actually doesn’t want to return to write a new episode of Doctor Who! Gallagher wrote two Doctor Who adventures in the 1980s — the Fourth Doctor serial, Warriors’ Gate, and the Fifth Doctor tale, Terminus — but fears that, if he came back for another story, people might not enjoy it, and his connection with Who might be somewhat tainted. He…

Pavements (dir. Alex Ross Perry) x VIFF 2024.
It's a complex but hilariously multifaceted riff on the typical kinds of music vanity projects we usually get, including artist-sanctioned documentaries, jukebox stage musicals, or self-important biographical dramas like Bohemian Rhapsody.

Authors Support Authors
When no one else can be relied on, other writers will be there.
Being an author is a *ride* my friends. I have done signings where there are lines of people. And some where three people came, one of which was my partner and one my best friend. I’ve been flown places and feted... And I’ve been ignored by the people who invited me (who seemed shocked and annoyed at my very presence). I’ve had readers tell me I changed their lives. I’ve had readers tell me a toddler with a dictionary could do better.
But you know what has never waivered—at least in my experience? Other authors are almost unfailingly supportive. Of course there are exceptions, I’m sure. But I’ve been cared for by writers all my career; they are the support system, they are the ones who lift all the boats. Authors know that this is a mad, precarious, bizarre path with few safe havens. They will be there for you.

A sombre shot of Sam Reid and John Leary as Dale Jennings and Murray Gallagher from No More Lies, as well as some others ❤️

Next Thursday, it will have been three years since No More Lies first went to air on the ABC. It’s a funny feeling, seeing all these Season One episodes reach their third year anniversaries, as I have such strong vivid memories of watching this show as it first aired, whilst we were in lockdown. It truly doesn’t feel like that long ago, but according to time and mathematics, it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No More Lies really did strike a nerve. It’s brilliantly brave and searing storytelling around the plight of HIV and AIDS affected people and how the media represented - or rather, misrepresented - their stories and circumstances. This is why I love The Newsreader so dearly. It hasn’t portrayed the 1980s through rose-coloured glasses, and has sought to elevate the stories and perspectives that were either misrepresented or not represented at all during the time. It also demonstrates how easy it is to fall for misinformation, and I genuinely believe that this episode is a great lesson in media literacy. The whole show itself, but in particular this episode, should be used in schools and universities.

A part of my paternal family history is my Dad’s younger brother, who was a young gay man who contracted HIV during the 1990s. This was the decade in which medical treatment and antiretroviral therapies became available to significantly prolong the progression of the virus to AIDS in HIV-affected patients. He was thankfully able to benefit from these therapies and medications, which bought him two decades of life, longer than our Russ and Caroline would have lived for.

We sadly lost my paternal uncle Christmas 2012, when he was only forty years old. Through watching this episode with my Dad, it gave me the courage and the instigator for a discussion about my uncle’s condition, how people responded to it, and how it impacted his life. I’ll forever be grateful to No More Lies, and especially to Michael Lucas and Kim Ho, for giving me the opportunity to have this discussion with my Dad, which I had been hesitant to have for at that point nine years. Never underestimate the power of good media and the conversations and connections it can bring about. 💖🌟

Play for Today: Under the Hammer (BBC, 1984)
"So. Tell me what happened."
"Well. It was me. I kicked it."
"Any particular reason?"
"I lost my temper."
"Who with?"
"I was having a... discussion about the painting and things to do with the painting with McClaren, sir, and, uh... it got out of hand."
"And you kicked the painting?"
"Yes, sir."
"Instead of kicking McClaren?"
"Yes, sir."
"I wish you'd kicked McClaren."
"So do I, sir."

Vaughan is as excellent as he always was‚ a tragic portrait of quiet dignity meeting sheer pigheadedness and#unbending yet naturally servile nature. Aldridge and Maxwell‚ tho‚ are the scene stealers as the owner (?) and head expert of the auction#house respectively‚ a pair of upper class grotesques who nevertheless display surprising nuance and depth as the plot develops#(particularly Maxwell). less politically motivated than many PfTs (not that it is at all apolitical: communism‚ the soviet union‚ wartime#looting and princess Diana all figure into the story) but a genuinely very compellingly told and entertaining play that manages moments#of real sharp comic dialogue alongside a gloomier slant on the inevitability of dishonest dealings at every level
