Why Celebrate Nova Scotia Heritage Day?
Each year on this day, people across Nova Scotia take a break to honor significant individuals, places, or events that have shaped the region. This holiday provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the diverse heritage that contributes to the province’s identity.
The reasons behind celebrating Heritage Day are deeply rooted in recognizing and appreciating the contributions of various communities.
For instance, past honorees include African Nova Scotian civil rights activists, Indigenous leaders, and notable historical sites like the Grand Pré. These honorees are selected to highlight their remarkable impact on Nova Scotia’s culture and history.
History of Nova Scotia Heritage Day
Nova Scotia Heritage Day recognizes the rich cultural and historical contributions within the province. The push for a mid-winter holiday led to the introduction of this day in December 2013. By 2015, the first official Heritage Day was celebrated, marking the start of a new tradition in Nova Scotia.
The creation of Heritage Day involved a unique approach. The Department of Labour and Advanced Education engaged students from primary to grade 12 across Nova Scotia. These students were asked to propose names and suggest notable individuals, places, or events that have shaped the province.
A panel reviewed the submissions and selected honorees for the next twelve years. This process not only gave the holiday its name but also ensured that each year, a different facet of Nova Scotia’s heritage is celebrated.
Over the years, honorees have included influential figures like Viola Desmond, a pioneering businesswoman and civil rights activist, and significant sites like the Landscape of Grand Pré.
These selections reflect the diverse and rich history of Nova Scotia, showcasing contributions from various communities and historical periods.
Heritage Day thus serves as a platform to educate and unite residents by highlighting the province’s storied past!
Nova Scotia Heritage Day FAQs
- Why does Nova Scotia Heritage Day honor different themes annually?
The idea behind highlighting a new theme each year is to showcase the depth of Nova Scotia’s diverse heritage.
By celebrating various historical figures, communities, or landmarks, the province ensures that lesser-known contributors get recognition alongside iconic names.
For instance, the Landscape of Grand Pré, honored in 2022, underscores Acadian resilience and agricultural ingenuity, while Viola Desmond’s commemoration in 2015 brought attention to civil rights.
This rotating focus keeps the holiday fresh and educational, encouraging the public to explore different chapters of Nova Scotia’s story.
- Are there any fascinating traditions tied to Nova Scotia Heritage Day?
Communities host unique celebrations, blending education and entertainment.
Halifax museums offer free entry, presenting exhibits tied to the year’s theme. Local storytellers revive historical events, and musicians play traditional Acadian, Mi’kmaq, or African Nova Scotian tunes.
Some towns even recreate old-time fairs with crafts, food, and games that reflect Nova Scotia’s cultural mosaic.
These immersive experiences bridge the gap between past and present, making history accessible and fun.
- Is there a surprising story behind the founding of Nova Scotia Heritage Day?
The holiday’s origins tie back to a practical need for a mid-winter holiday, coupled with a desire to recognize the province’s rich history.
In 2013, public consultations sparked the idea to dedicate this holiday to Nova Scotia’s cultural legacy.
Interestingly, students played a crucial role by suggesting honorees, making it one of the rare holidays shaped partly by youth input. This participatory approach ensures the day reflects community values.
- Has Nova Scotia Heritage Day ever honored the Indigenous Mi’kmaq culture?
Yes, Mi’kmaq contributions have been celebrated. For instance, the 2023 honoree Rita Joe was a Mi’kmaq poet known as the “voice of her people.”
Her work captures Indigenous resilience and pride, offering insight into Mi’kmaq traditions.
Events that year highlighted their songs, dances, and crafts. Honoring Mi’kmaq culture reinforces the province’s commitment to reconciliation and recognition of its Indigenous roots.
- How do rural communities celebrate Nova Scotia Heritage Day?
In smaller towns, the day becomes a grassroots celebration. Volunteer-led events include quilting bees that replicate historical designs, or potluck dinners featuring Acadian and Scottish dishes.
Some villages host heritage walks, where residents share oral histories about local landmarks.
These intimate gatherings create a sense of connection and ensure that even remote areas participate in preserving Nova Scotia’s past.
- Are there any amusing myths related to Nova Scotia Heritage Day?
One common misconception is that Nova Scotia Heritage Day is only for historians or museum-goers.
In reality, the day has evolved to include everything from cooking competitions to live performances.
Another amusing myth suggests that the holiday’s date was chosen to break up the monotony of February—not entirely untrue!
Its placement was partly inspired by other provinces’ Family Day celebrations but given a uniquely cultural twist.
- How does Nova Scotia Heritage Day inspire future generations?
By involving students in choosing themes and creating projects, the holiday fosters early engagement with history.
Schools organize essay competitions, art projects, and reenactments tied to the honoree. In 2023, students across the province explored Rita Joe’s poetry, creating visual art inspired by her verses.
These activities help young people see themselves as part of an ongoing story, encouraging them to preserve and expand Nova Scotia’s legacy.
- Have any honorees been surprisingly modern figures?
While many honorees are historical, some are surprisingly modern. Viola Desmond, celebrated in 2015, gained posthumous fame after becoming the face of Canada’s $10 bill in 2018.
Honoring figures like her bridges the gap between history and contemporary social movements. This modern relevance makes the holiday resonate more deeply with today’s audience.
- Are there unique foods prepared during Nova Scotia Heritage Day?
Nova Scotia’s food heritage shines during celebrations. Seafood chowder, a staple, reflects the province’s maritime identity.
Blueberry grunt, a dessert made with local berries, often appears at potlucks. Some events feature bannock, a traditional Indigenous bread.
These dishes bring communities together, blending culinary traditions from Acadian, Mi’kmaq, and Scottish cultures.
- Could Nova Scotia Heritage Day expand beyond the province?
While unique to Nova Scotia, the holiday has inspired interest in creating similar observances elsewhere in Canada.
Advocates suggest expanding it nationally to celebrate each province’s heritage, similar to how Family Day started regionally.
This idea reflects growing awareness of the importance of preserving local histories.

𝐵𝓁𝒶𝒹𝑒
You are favored by everyone in the Stellarton Hunters; even Elio does it too. You both are stuck together whenever everyone else is 'busy'; you’re always quiet, really wanting to talk to anyone in general, and it’s no difference with him just painting and painting (he could leave but doesn’t).
Most people don’t see you anywhere since you're probably in your art room that no one knows where it is since there are several art rooms for you; he’s walked in on you in a room, thinking it was some sort of spy.
He looks at some of your paintings whenever he’s stuck taking care of you, which freaks you out. Does he have to look at that one? The painting in question was based on him and how he looks similar to spider lilies. He doesn’t say anything and just puts the painting back where it was hanging.
Y’know those trashy art kits with bad markers and ‘paints’ (but very expressive) Well, while going causing some havoc, he saw it and thought you would like it. When he sees your face happy (for at least trying), he is glad, until Kafka tells him that you probably wouldn’t use it since the kit is really low quality.
𝒥𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝒴𝓊𝒶𝓃
He gives you an entire art room with very expensive supplies, and since he sees you somewhere where no one goes, you start to freak out a little whenever someone sees you. He hopes you impress him with your skills, and if you do, he might hang your painting in his office so that those who come and see him can also witness your piece.
You're very comfortable around him, only letting him see your paintings. You just finished wanting me to praise you for your hard work and give you a little attention.
Watch you get very shy when talking to other people at events with him. Go on, why don’t you tell them about the painting on the walls? You were the one who spent your sweat and tears just to complete it.
𝒟𝒶𝓃 𝐻𝑒𝓃𝑔
He’s a bit awkward when it comes to you; you both don’t talk and don’t leave your rooms either. Since everyone is going out to get something on this new planet and you both are staying well, Dan Heng is in charge of you. It might have been the first time he’s ever seen your room. and it’s a total mess—paintbrushes, paint, several unfinished paintings, and broken parts of supplies all over the place.
Everyone thought his room was that bad. He can just sit there on the side and not stare at you, you say in a whisper. What? Well, you get nervous whenever he stares at you, so he can't... One question about painting: you lost your mind and told him about everything, so it was a bonding experience, and now you give him some little drawings, so it’s worth it.
You also use the database in his room to get inspiration for your next painting from your favorite artist.
𝒲𝑒𝓁𝓉 𝓎𝒶𝓃𝑔
He asks you many questions just to see you freak out over your obsession. Like,  let it all out; he’ll hear out everything you say; he means everything—the origin of the color purple, sure! Knock yourself out or talk about your favorite artist, what kind of painting they did, what their first painting was, and stuff like that.
Unlike Blade, he gets you good painting supplies that aren't like Crayola or those bad art sets like pencils that have good pigment and paint brushes made with the finest bristles, like he knows what good stuff is at.
I helped you design your room as well, making it very bright and artistic like you, with your most beloved paintings all over your walls, and even gave you two matching paintings, one for you and the other for him.

Olympic Park, Stellarton, NS
Blayre Turnbull used to play hockey on the pond at this park so the town renamed it and put up this plaque in her (and Babe Mason’s) honour after the 2018 Olympics. transcription of Blayre’s side under the cut:
Blayre Turnbull
“No matter what you are doing, try your best….… homework, practice, work, you will not be disappointed for your effort”. —Blayre Turnbull, Olympian, 2018
Dedication to the above words of wisdom have brought Stellarton’s Blayre Turnbull a rewarding career in her chosen profession of hockey. From the lasting memories as a young child of four learning to skate on this very Olympic Park Pond, to playing the game she so loves, with the best in the world.
Growing up in Stellarton, Pictou County, Blayre had great encouragement from family, local hockey organizations, community and a variety of people. She would state “The credit most importantly goes to my family, which continues to support my dreams; my coaches at Shattuck - St. Mary’s and the University of Wisconsin, who taught me to believe in myself; and many of my teammates, who challenge me to get better and be the best player I can be”.

“MINE SHAFT BLAST OUSTS 84 WORKERS,” Toronto Star. April 30, 1942. Page 2. --- Explosions in Same Pit Have Killed 95 Men ---- Halifax, April 30 (CP) - Hon. L. D. Currie, minister of mines, said 84 miners, all uninjured, were evacuated early today from the Nova Scotia Coal company's Allan shaft at Stellarton, N.S. A small explosion occurred in the workings. The shaft will be closed for 24 hours to enable an investigation and to determine whether any damage was caused to the workings, the minister said.
At Stellarton, Mine Manager Badoux said: "The men said they did. not hear the explosion, but there was a disturbance of the air and some dust."
During the last war 88 men were killed by an explosion in the Allan shaft in 1918. In 1935, seven men were killed by an explosion in the same pit.

National Library Day
National Library Day is celebrated every year on 6 April. On this day, people come together to celebrate the crucial roles that libraries and librarians play in our society. It’s also the day to reflect on the importance of reading and how essential it is to make books accessible and affordable for every reader. A well-stocked library can introduce readers to many new worlds, and helps them become more informed citizens. Libraries are also great community spaces where people can gather to exchange ideas and learn together.
History of National Library Day
Libraries aren’t a new concept — it dates back millennia. The first systematically organized library was founded in the 7th century B.C. by Assyrian ruler Ashurbanipal in Nineveh, in contemporary Iraq. It contained approximately 30,000 cuneiform tablets sorted by subject.
Since their inception, almost every great civilization has built libraries. They became great repositories of knowledge, and a few ancient libraries live on even today. The goal of these libraries was to collect knowledge and distribute it for its use in everyday life. Special importance was given to books on agriculture, architecture, medicine, art, manufacturing, war, and topics concerning the betterment of life. As the years went by, people realized the benefits of having publicly accessible centers of knowledge, and libraries became an important feature in cities and towns across the world.
As the influence of the Internet grew, many believed that there would no longer be a need for libraries, but history has proved otherwise, as libraries continue to flourish and are now more popular than ever! Not everything can be found on the Internet, and a good amount of information is still available only on paper, and despite the convenience of the world wide web, people still like to physically visit a library and spend time among books and other readers.
