Another cute lil’ comic about the Alaskan Purchase.
From what I researched, the Russian Empire decided to sell off Alaska because it was far away, hard to defend, and they didn’t have a lot of money after fighting the Crimean War. Since they didn’t want Alaska falling into British hands, they decided to sell it to America, who had just got out of a Civil War. Russia sold Alaska for dirt cheap at $7.2 million, or about two cents per acre. After the purchased was finalized on March 30, 1867, mostly all Russian inhabitants left the area.
A large majority of the US viewed this purchase positively as they thought Alaska would be a good way to trade with Asia. However, some viewed it as the acquirement of a useless piece of land, as most of it was unexplored. Then the Klondike Gold Rush happened and everyone rushed over.
Then there’s the Alaskan Boundary dispute, but I’ll get back to that later.
I love Alaska; it’s nature is beautiful, it’s our biggest State with an awesome flag, and it’s got oil. What’s not to love?
(p.s. I just used google translate for the Russian bits, also I used cute balls to make it easier to draw.)
