"Tout rêveur de flamme est un poète en puissance. Toute rêverie devant la flamme est une rêverie qui admire. Tout rêveur de flamme est en état de rêverie première. Cette admiration première est enracinée dans notre lointain passé. Nous avons pour la flamme une admiration naturelle, on ose dire : une admiration innée. La flamme détermine une accentuation du plaisir de voir, un au-delà du toujours vu. Elle nous force à regarder.

La flamme nous appelle à voir en première fois : nous en avons mille souvenirs, nous en rêvons tout à la personnalité d’une très vieille mémoire et cependant nous en rêvons comme tout le monde, nous nous souvenons comme tout le monde se souvient — alors, suivant une des lois les plus constantes de la rêverie devant la flamme, le rêveur vit dans un passé qui n’est plus uniquement le sien, dans le passé des premiers feux du monde."
