Friday, March 17: Running Wild, “Sailing Fire”

3 years after the “farewell” show, and 7 years after the last album, Rolf Kasparek revived the Running Wild banner with Shadowmaker and more or less officially did away with the notion of working under a band construct as guitarist Peter “PJ” Jordan was the only other credited member on the record.  It didn’t really matter much, as Kasparek had been relying on drum machines for the previous 12 or so years, and he was generally pretty far from his ‘90s peak as a writer and performer.  But there were always certain pleasures on every Running Wild record, and Shadowmaker had “Sailing Fire” to scratch the very specific Rock n’ Rolf itch.  The track was a stately pirate metal number, to the extent that such a thing was possible, and worked as a enjoyably catchy singalong despite not offering anything remotely new.  There were other pirate metal acts, but Kasparek was the first and the best at it, and even if “Sailing Fire” couldn’t measure against the man’s best work it was plenty entertaining and mastered the form.
