Actress — Statik (Smalltown Supersound)
Tumblr media
youtube
Darren Cunningham AKA Actress begins his latest album in “Hell.” Silence, then scraping granular beats, a grey-scale palette, tapping into The Wicker Man vibe of Boards of Canada at their darkest. Yet in the background, faintly celestial tones sound, as if the trajectory is upwards via the grinding of dungeon tools and babble of dementing voices. As the rhythms mutate, the balance shifts more urgently between dread and hope. Resolution withheld for now, Cunningham spends the remainder of Statik in ascent, reassembling elements of club music into ambient soundscapes that flow over a glitchy crunch of percussive effects.
Gradually adding light and warmth Cunningham plays with dichotomies of movement and stasis, light and dark, insularity and co-existence. He treats his tracks like a scientist, studying the behavior of his musical molecules as they orbit and collide. As he introduces new elements there are moments of readjustment, of acceptance and reaction. Gamelans, RnB vocal samples, warm synth pads, thudding kick drums, sometimes upfront and smooth then pushed beneath vinyl crackle, reverbed, distorted, or atomized and reconstituted. For all this Cunningham seems more interested in a search for calm amidst the bustle. On “Six” his bass tones are like a thick carpet beneath the clicking beat. The static feels like the gentle lapping of wavelets against a dinghy. If there’s a portent of storm, it’s not coming this way. By “Cafe De Mars,” the music begins to swell and twinkle, the abrasive edges eroded to a background swish as Cunningham expands the track in concentric rings. There’s a couple of odd detours that somehow add to the mystery of Statik. The parping synth line in “Dolphin Spray” brings Falco to mind whilst the whipcracks and drones of “System Verse” sound like a malfunctioning submersible sinking to the seabed.
This is head music, discursive in a suggestive rather than rambling manner. As Cunningham pans across the channels, his sound design strikes the ears and creates synaptic leaps that draw pull the listener’s focus. Many of constituents will be familiar to fans of Boards of Canada, Two Lone Swordsmen and Aphex Twin and if the early tracks of Statik sound more challenging in their discordances, you will feel borne along by the idiosyncratic juxtapositions Cunningham creates.

Folks, I’m back, and I’m bringing you more music because it’s my blog, and on my blog the music party don’t quit until I die, or until I’m finally permanently incarcerated by the law for online lewdness. This entire month (mid-March into mid-April 2023) I’m dedicating to Lady-Vocalist-Hotties-Who-Rock... but aren’t exactly Hollywood-caliber famous. First up is Collide, and now that I’m divorced, I don’t mind telling everyone that I’ve had a crush on lead singer kaRIN for over a decade and a half. Her voice, when not drenched in obnoxious autotune, is the sexiest thing since sliced bread. Instead of yelling or screaming, this lady lead vocalist gets downright sultry; very closely approaching the microphone and delivering a breathy, contemplative, and skilled lyrical performance that makes me wanna get on my knees and beg for a repeat live performance… preferably at her very own bedside. Folks, I’ve been listening to this group for years and I can tell you for a fact that not only are their albums unfairly undervalued, Collide’s entire catalog is about as popular as the nerdy dipshit in class with taped-together glasses who constantly smells like pee. This L.A.-based group has pounded out ten quality studio albums since the mid-90’s, each of them sounding slightly tonally different from one another. And because they aren’t as radio-friendly as say, Linkin Park or Korn, you’ll probably only hear them randomly on the internet these days. But when it comes to electronic rock, I’ll take ten trip-hoppy, darkwave-y Collide sandwiches over ANYTHING you’ll get served on modern mainstream radio. If you bother digging a little deeper into the mythos of this band, you’ll discover that this musical duo is all about combining musical styles, as well as masculine and feminine energies to create a sound that is both positive and negative. It’s hard-rocking, and soft-spoken, it’s cerebral and subconscious. This is Tongue Tied & Twisted from the very excellent 2008 album Two Headed Monster. And if that preface is still not enough to convince you to smash play, here’s a picture of young kaRIN to tempt your palette.

Oh, my dear, sweet kaRIN… your panting voice has been the primary source of my nocturnal emissions most pleasant dreams for over a decade now. Did I mention I’m single now? We’re about the same age, we could hit it off. Hit me up on plentyoffish.com. Oh, there’s also a guy in the group nicknamed Statik. He does the instrumentals; she does the lyrics/vocals. I’m obsessed with weirdcore aesthetic, so I made an object head OC based off it! I’ve had Statik’s concept in mind for EVER now, and finally brought him to life. He’s kind of a comfort OC now <3

Interlude: Coda
HOT damn! The madman actually did it! Not only did he actually have a meaningful conversation with Wick, he got his number, AND A DATE!! Somebody call Satan and tell him there’s a snow storm, cause hell just froze over. The rest of the day was soooo boring. I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there. As I walked out to the courtyard, I saw good old water-wings taking off right into the sky. I swear he’s gonna get himself killed with how fast he goes. I let out a sigh filled with content. Not all of us can fly after all. So I began walking ‘home’. It was a pleasant day outside. The sidewalk and street downtown were bustling with people. My kinda people. I sat down on one of the benches and took out my guitar.
And then, there was music as I strummed. And that music was coming from me. Both figuratively and literally. See the lifeguard’s got water, obviously. And the wax-stick is a candle. Again, obviously. See, everyone here’s got something about them. Could be that you got water or fire or ice powers, that makes you an elemental. Or your DNA merged with either technology or objects and animals in nature. Then you’d be an animate or a fauna That’s what makes this world… this world. And me? I got one of the more… unique ones. I can absorb and redistribute sounds. That makes me a living amp I suppose. Doesn’t help I also got the amplified hearing as well.
But anyways, enough exposition. I was sitting there just strumming away. I could feel every vibration of the strings against the wood. It was beautiful. And then I hear the metallic footsteps of Statik around the corner. Great. Maybe… just maybe. She’d leave me alone. But of course, fate despised me having nice things as always. I took a deep breath as she stepped towards me, waiting for her to say something that she thinks is smart. But… she didn’t. She just.. listened. And so… I continued. Without a word between us. And then finally, I stopped. And when I looked up at her, she was smiling.
”You know, you’re not bad with that thing, Baspher.” She said, her tone almost sounded… happy. As if she was actually enjoying the music I was playing.
”Careful Statik, that almost sounded like a compliment.” I shot back. I saw her sink into her skin.
”It was one.” She said in a surprisingly timid voice. I felt my heart sink into my gut.
”Oh… didn’t know you liked rock.” I said as I offered her a spot next to me. And she did. I continued playing and she leaned in closer, probably to get a better listen. And then… something interesting happened: her head landed on my shoulder. I… didn’t know what to do so I just kept playing until I finished my song. Then… It was quiet. Too quiet. So I just… put my arm around her. It felt… nice. I looked down at her and she was smiling.
“You know you got a pretty comfy shoulder.” She said as she wrapped her arms around me. “And you play a mean guitar.” Her voice was… softer. I smirked as I began playing again. The world began to… feel nice. What was happening to me? Me and this girl had been at each other’s throats for years, since we were kids practically. And now we’re sharing what felt like a romantic moment. But it wasn’t that. Right? It couldn’t be.
Suddenly, in the midst of my internal questioning, I hear Statik perk up again. “You got anyone to go to homecoming with?” She asked, as if it was just a casual thing. I shook my head ‘no’. She then shot up with a bright cocky smile. “Perfect. You and I are going together now.” She said before walking off
