Here’s a list of some false anglicisms!

A false anglicism, or pseudo-anglicism is a word in a language that sounds English but doesn’t actually carry the same meaning in English.

Wikipedia has a very very good list of examples; pretty much all of these come from there

autostop: hitchhiking (French, Italian, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, Greek, Russian, Spanish, Bulgarian, Hungarian)

basket: basketball (Danish, French, Indonesian, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Greek)

camping: campsite or campground (French, Dutch, Greek, Bulgarian, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish)

smoking: dinner jacket, tuxedo, or smoking jacket (Danish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, Dutch, Greek, Russian)

Korean

one shot: bottoms up (원샷)

hand phone: cellphone (핸드폰)

skinship: platonic hand-holding, hugging, etc. (스킨십)

French

baby-foot: table football

baby-parc: playpen

before: drinks before a party/"pregame" (opposite of after)

blind test: music quiz / 'name that tune'

brushing: blow-dry and styling

box: wifi router or parking space

dancing: dance hall

footing: jogging (though the real English word is also used in French with the same meaning)

pressing: dry cleaning shop

recordman/recordmans/recordwoman: record holder, especially in sports (also in Russian)

relooker/relooking: to makeover/a makeover

speaker/speakerine: rradio or television announcer

Italian

autogrill: rest area

beauty farm: spa

jolly: the joker in a pack of cards

pullman: a bus

smart working: remote work

water: toilet

Portuguese

outdoor: billboard

home office: work from home

Danish

butterfly: bow tie

cottoncoat: trench coat

doorstep: a short and informal press conference

Neither has a degree but I heard stories of my father being one of the best students in class back then. My mother too, has her fair share of knowledge of the English language (we're non-native speakers of English) soooo, I'm proud of them~

learning another language is always beautiful, no matter the speed. like, what do you mean you are crying because you had to read a sentence twice to get it, when at the beginning you had to do it five times? kicking yourself because you had to listen to an audio at 75x to understand it fully, when two months ago you could barely understand one or two words, even at your second try? getting mad because you had to research how to spell a word, when a few days back you didn't even know how to pronounce it? hell, that's amazing. keep going. you'll get there.

What was the Studyblr golden age?

This basically refers to a time where the studyblr hashtag was full of original content made by students. It has more of a community vibe back then, which I’d love to bring back! (Disclaimer: it was not a perfect time though, there was heaps of stationary overconsumption and a big focus on aesthetic notes. But the community was thriving!)

Why I made this community:

I’ve been struggling to find active Studyblr accounts with the #studyblr tag, and honestly most of the content on this tag isn’t related to studying… Tbh I’m guilty of this, even though I identify as primarily being a studyblr for psychology & french, I realise that some of my bookish/artsy posts might have been annoying to see on the studyblr tag. (I’m sorry to anyone who has been silently irritated by this!!) I’m a bit ashamed that mildly contributed to this, and so I hope this community will balance that out!

Btw, I made this community a while back just to test out this new feature, but I’d like to credit @star-motif ‘s post for making me think about this more, and subsequently publicise the community! I hope this space will bring us back to the golden age of tumblr😊
