Sara Duterte says ‘many missed the point’ of her ‘designated survivor’ remark #FerdinandMarcosJr.
Nearly two months since she resigned from the Marcos Cabinet — a clear signal of an intent to break ranks and go on a divergent path — Vice President Sara Duterte took a swipe at the government, openly criticizing how the country is being led.
In a lengthy statement that seemed more like a contra-State of the Nation Address speech on Wednesday, August 7, the Vice President did not mince words, declaring that “Filipinos deserve better.” Duterte released the statement a little over two weeks after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivered his third SONA.
The contra-SONA is traditionally delivered by the political opposition as a reaction to the President’s speech. But the Liberal Party said Sara Duterte can’t claim to be the political opposition since the qualities of an opposition leader “cannot be seen in her track record.” (READ: Who is the real opposition leader and why can’t it be Sara Duterte?)

LOOK: Multisectoral groups marched along Commonwealth Avenue earlier today as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivered his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Batasang Pambansa to assail his failed promise of a Bagong Pilipinas [trans. New Philippines]. For the groups, Marcos’s Bagong Pilipinas is a grand sham. Amid promises of better living conditions, 46 percent of Filipinos rated their families as food poor—the highest since 2008—according to the latest survey of Social Weather Stations. “[H]inaharap [ng ating mga kababayan] ang realidad na mataas ang presyo ng mga bilihin, lalo na ng pagkain—lalo’t higit, ng bigas,” said Marcos in his speech earlier, affirming bleak realities on the ground. On top of a cost of living crisis are poverty wages that fail to meet the family living wage of P1,190, as estimated by economic think tank IBON Foundation, the P35 wage hike in the National Capital Region (NCR) enacted last week was dismissed as an “insult to minimum wage workers” by Leticia Castillo of human rights alliance Defend NCR. Such wage hike is far from the P150 raise being lobbied in Congress by labor groups under the National Wage Coalition. Castillo also decried the persistence of red-tagging and vilification of activists perpetrated by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict. From July 2022 to June 2024, 3,419,044 cases of threat, harassment, and intimidation were recorded by human rights group Karapatan. The number of political prisoners also climbed to 755 as of last month. These human rights violations run contrary to Marcos’s establishment of a Special Committee on Human Rights, which was labeled “toothless” by Human Rights Watch. Marcos’s claim of a bloodless drug war is also inconsistent with the 359 drug-related killings—34.3 percent of which were committed by state agents—recorded during his second year in office by research project Dahas. Moreover, despite claims of an independent foreign policy, the Philippines under Marcos remains dependent on the US and its unequal treaties, said Liza Maza of MAKABAYAN. Last year, Marcos announced the creation of four new US military bases in the country under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with the US. Such treaties with the US have been criticized for intensifying tensions with China and the broader Indo-Pacific region. Clarice Palce of Gabriela and Ronnel Arambulo of Pamalakaya raised their worries of the Philippines being dragged into a stand off between two global superpowers which will only worsen the poor living conditions of Filipinos. The program ended with a symbolic destruction of the effigies of Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte. The broken UniTeam will be challenged by the Makabayan Coalition which will field a complete senatorial slate including ACT Teachers Party-list Representative France Castro and Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Arlene Brosas in the 2025 midterm elections. The 2023 State of the Nation Address
A personal edit. Every year since 2017, I've been assigned by CNN Philippines Life some form of coverage of the president's SONA. For the one last month, which was Bongbong Marcos's second address, our focus was the red carpet.
My full photoset here with a sharp intro by Marga Buenaventura: https://www.cnnphilippines.com/life/culture/Current-Events/2023/7/25/sona-red-carpet-fashion-2023.html
"The lavishness and fanfare of the SONA red carpet suggest that while Filipinos seek out lower prices and more employment opportunities, there is still room to stomach a little bit of political opulence."

Sara Duterte takes a swipe at Marcos gov’t, but won’t it backfire?

Duterte declared: “We are extremely tired of seeing our country being left behind, treated as if it has no value, unappealing, and submissive to other nations. We, Filipinos, deserve more than what we are hearing and seeing from the government right now. We, Filipinos, deserve better.”

07-22-24 Despite President Marcos Jr.'s claims of success in his third State of the Nation Address (SONA), we must face the bitter truth: many continue to suffer due to low wages and economic hardship. His administration's so-called achievements do little to address the dire need for fair compensation.
We stand united in our call for a 150-peso wage increase for all workers. This demand is not just a number; it is a lifeline for millions of families struggling to make ends meet. Despite the government's claims of economic growth, the benefits have not trickled down to the working class.
The proposed wage increase is a crucial step toward ensuring a living wage for all. It acknowledges the hard work and contributions of our labor force, who are the backbone of our economy. A 150-peso increase will help bridge the gap between the current minimum wage and the actual cost of living, providing workers with a fair share of the country's prosperity.
We urge President Marcos Jr. and our legislators to listen to the voices of the people. We call for policies that prioritize the welfare of the majority over the interests of a few.
Our demand for a wage increase is a call for dignity, fairness, and justice. It is a call for a future where every Filipino can achieve security and hope. We will continue to mobilize, advocate, and fight until our voices are heard and our needs are met. The struggle for fair wages and genuine economic justice must continue unwaveringly.

“It is said that billions of funds are being invested in flood control projects, but the people suffer from constant floods every rainy season. The people need to know where this fund is going,” [Rep. Arlene Brosas' statement] added in Filipino.
During his third State of the Nation Address (Sona) last July 22, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. claimed to have completed over 5,500 flood control initiatives.
In his report to the people on July 23, Marcos also proposed the implementation of 10 flood control projects from 2024 to 2037, which would cost over P500 billion.
“For years, we’ve seen corruption-tainted and ineffective flood control projects. We need to put an end to this cycle that only serves to line the pockets of corrupt officials while leaving our people vulnerable to disasters,” Brosas pointed out.
