Jabuticaba: Health Benefits of Rarest and Exotic Fruits of the World
Laden with calcium, potassium and magnesium jaboticaba is highly valuable for strengthening bones and maintain dental health. These essential minerals promote bone mineral density, support connective tissue, and averts them from becoming brittle and lower the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
— Namita Nayyar (WF Team)
Jabuticaba
The Jabuticaba is a fruit-bearing tree in the family Myrtaceae native to Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo states in southeastern Brazil. Related species in the genus Myrciaria, often referred to by the same common name, are native to Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia. The tree is grown for its purplish-black, white-pulped fruits; they can be eaten raw or be used to make jellies and drinks (plain juice or wine). Other common names include Brazilian Grape Tree, Jaboticaba, Jabotica, Jabuticabeira, Guaperu, Guapuru, Hivapuru, Sabara and Ybapuru (Guarani).
Common in Brazilian markets, jabuticabas are largely eaten fresh; their popularity has been likened to that of grapes in the United States. Fresh fruit may begin to ferment 3 to 4 days after harvest, so they are often used to make jams, tarts, strong wines, and liqueurs. Due to the extremely short shelf-life, fresh jabuticaba fruit is very rare in markets outside of areas of cultivation. Traditionally, an astringent decoction of the sun-dried skins has been used as a treatment for hemoptysis, asthma, diarrhoea, and gargled for chronic inflammation of the tonsils.
Several potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory anti-cancer compounds have been isolated from the fruit. One that is unique to the fruit is jaboticabin.
The name jabuticaba, derived from the Tupi word Jabuti (tortoise) + Caba (place), meaning the place where you find tortoises. The Guarani name is "Yvapuru", where yva means fruit, and the onomatopoeic word puru for the crunching sound the fruit produces when bitten. A traditional song from the eastern region of Bolivia refers to a young woman as having "eyes like the guapuru" (because of their soft blackness) and a mouth "as sweet as the achachairu."
The jabuticaba tree, which appears as a charge on the coat of arms of Contagem, Minas Gerais, Brazil, has become a widely used species in the art of bonsai, particularly in Taiwan and parts of the Caribbean. In Brazil, it is common to refer to something allegedly unique to the country as a "jabuticaba" since the tree supposedly only grows in Brazil. It is usually a pejorative expression.
Health Benefits of Jabuticaba
Jabuticaba is used for the treatment for hemoptysis, asthma, diarrhea and dysentery also as a gargle for chronic inflammation of the tonsils are by the caustic decoction of the sun-dry skins is agreed in Brazil. Such use of fruit also may lead to excessive consumption of tannin. The fruit of Jaboticaba contain compounds similar to known to have positive biological effects in cranberries, grapes and other related species, including anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory and the antioxidant qualities.
1. Jabuticaba Fruit can be stimulating, opens up bronchial airways, which is good for asthma, and slightly astringent making it great for diarrhea, and also healing those suffering from tonsillitis.
2. Jabuticaba Fruit is anti-inflammatory, and full of great antioxidants.
3. Jabuticaba Fruit an anti-aging fruit with similar health benefits like cranberries.
4. Jabuticaba Fruit contains lots of protein, low in carbs, and high in calcium, iron, phosphorus, and very high in Vitamin C and has some B vitamins, and very low in calories.
5. New Studies are being done on the effectiveness of Jabuticaba for fighting cancer... because it contains many anticancer compounds.
6. Jabuticaba Fruit soothes the GI tract, helps with arthritis, and also prevents many skin diseases and even hair loss
7. Jabuticaba Fruit is also a great detoxing agent.
8. Jabuticaba Fruit is rich in phenolic compounds, among which we can highlight the anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are the most abundant type of flavonoid and they are responsible for the blue or purple colour. Anthocyanins are the only fatty acid that is believed to play an important role in the health benefits exerted by this fruit, apart from the polyphenolic content found on it and more specifically punicalagins, punicalins, gallagic acid, and ellagic acid that act as powerful antioxidants.
9. In Jabuticaba Fruit there is another active constituent present on this fruit, a depside known as jaboticabin, which may also play an even more important role on the health benefits of this fruit, because depsides exert antibiotic, anti-HIV,antioxidant, and anti-proliferative activity.
Jabuticaba Fruit makes a wonderful jelly and great cheesecakes.

The Brazilian cerrado savanna is also on fire
A fire at the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, in the heart of Brazil’s savanna-like Cerrado biome, reached its fifth day on Monday, consuming over 10,000 hectares of land.
The park is located in the state of Goiás, about 230 kilometers from Brazil’s capital Brasília.
Firefighters have been in the region since September 5. On the first day, they faced challenging terrain, walking three kilometers in a hard-to-reach area to get to the fire, which was consuming native Cerrado vegetation in an area with many hills and rocks. The first fire, which was put out, extended for about 10 kilometers.
Created in 1961, the National Park Chapada dos Veadeiros protects an area that spans nearly 241,000 hectares in central Brazil. The park is a Unesco World Heritage Site for “containing flora and fauna and key habitats that characterize the Cerrado — one of the world’s oldest and most diverse tropical ecosystems.” The region features over 10,000 plant and 1,500 animal species.

Seed networks are community organizations that have multiplied in the past decade in different Brazilian biomes to collect, trade and plant native seeds in degraded areas.
In the Chapada dos Veadeiros area, in Goiás state members of seed networks from several parts of Brazil met for almost a week in early June.
Along with environmental organizations, researchers and government officials, they participated in discussions to boost Redário, a new group seeking to strengthen these networks and meet the demands of the country’s ecological restoration sector.
“This meeting gathered members of Indigenous peoples, family farmers, urban dwellers, technicians, partners, everyone together. It creates a beautiful mosaic and there’s a feeling that what we are doing will work and will grow,” says Milene Alves, a member of the steering committee of the Xingu Seed Network and Redário’s technical staff.
Just in 2022, 64 metric tons of native seeds were sold by these networks, and similar figures are expected for 2023.
The effort to collect native seeds by traditional populations in Brazil has contributed to effective and more inclusive restoration of degraded areas, and is also crucial for the country to fulfill its pledge under international agreements to recover 30 million acres of vegetation by 2030.
Seed collection for restoration in these areas has previously only been done by companies. But now, these networks, are organized as cooperatives, associations or even companies, enable people in the territories to benefit from the activity.
Eduardo Malta, a restoration expert from the Socio-Environmental Institute and one of Redário’s leaders, advocates for community participation in trading and planting seeds. “These are the people who went to all the trouble to secure the territories and who are there now, preserving them. They have the greatest genetic diversity of species and hold all the knowledge about the ecosystem,”
.
The Geraizeiros Collectors Network are one of the groups that makes up Redário. They were founded in 2021, and now gathers 30 collectors from eight communities in five municipalities: Montezuma, Vargem Grande, Rio Pardo de Minas, Taiobeiras and Berizal.
They collect and plant seeds to recover the vegetation of the Gerais Springs Sustainable Development Reserve, which was created in 2014 in order to stop the water scarcity as a result of eucalyptus monocultures planted by large corporations.
“The region used to be very rich in water and it is now supplied by water trucks or wells,” says Fabrícia Santarém Costa, a collector and vice president of the Geraizeiros Collectors’ Network. “Today we see that these activities only harm us, because the [eucalyptus] company left, and we are there suffering the consequences.”
Costa was 18 years old in 2018, when the small group of seed collectors was founded and financed by the Global Environmental Facility. She says that working with this cooperative changed the way she looks at life and the biome in which she was born and raised. She describes restoring the sustainable development work as "ant work", ongoing, slow. But it has already improved the water situation in the communities. In addition, seed sales complement geraizeiros’ income, enabling them to remain in their territories.
.
The Redário initiative also intends to influence public policies and regulations in the restoration sector to disseminate muvuca, the name given by the networks to the technique of sowing seeds directly into the soil rather than growing seedlings in nurseries.
Technical studies and network experiences alike show that this technique covers the area faster and with more trees. As a result, it requires less maintenance and lower costs. This system also distributes income to the local population and encourages community organizations.
“The muvuca system has great potential [for restoration], depending on what you want to achieve and local characteristics. It has to be in our range of options for meeting the targets, for achieving them at scale,” says Ministry of the Environment analyst Isis Freitas.

Jabuticaba, also spelled Jaboticaba, is the edible fruit of the jabuticabeira (Plinia cauliflora) or Brazilian grapetree. The purplish-black, white-pulped fruit grows directly on the trunk of the tree, making it an example of 'cauliflory'. It is eaten raw or used to make jellies, jams, juice or wine. The tree, of the family Myrtaceae, is native to the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Goiás and São Paulo in Brazil. Related species in the genus Myrciaria, often referred to by the same common names, are native to Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Bolivia.

Court denies legal abortion of 13-year-old teenager after father asks to maintain pregnancy
Girl expressed her desire to terminate the pregnancy to the Guardianship Council of Goiás, but the judge rejected the request
A 13-year-old teenager living in Goiás was denied a legal abortion by the TJ-GO (Goiás Court of Justice), after the young woman's father went to court and requested a ban on the procedure.
The young woman has already completed 28 weeks of pregnancy, which makes the procedure more difficult.
In a statement to the Guardianship Council of the region where she lives, the young woman stated that she would like to terminate the pregnancy when she was in the 18th week. In messages sent to the agency, the girl stated that if she did not have access to the procedure, she would look for a way to carry it out on her own.
In a statement to the Council, the 24-year-old suspected abuser stated that he did not know the teenager's age and that, if he had known, he would not have had a relationship with her.
The child's father, also according to the agency, had asked to talk to the suspect so that he could take care of the baby. Despite the teenager's request for interruption, the father went to court to have the procedure prohibited.
The report sought experts in the field of law, who state that the victim's desire, when under 18 years of age, is not enough to carry out the procedure and that authorization from those responsible is required.
In these cases, the Public Prosecutor's Office can represent the child in case of divergent decisions.
The Prosecutor's Office asked the Court for the abortion to be carried out, but Judge Doraci Lamar Rosa da Silva Andrade prohibited the termination of the pregnancy and accepted the father's request.
The judge also states that the medical team must use “all medical means and techniques that ensure the survival of the unborn child, including all necessary monitoring until it is medically discharged, unless there is proven to be a risk to the adolescent’s life” .
The judge states that the young woman's father argued that the “crime of rape is pending investigation” — despite Brazilian law establishing that any type of sexual relationship with a person under the age of 14 is considered rape of a vulnerable person.
Andrade also says in his decision that “there is no medical report that indicates a risk in the continuation of the pregnancy”.
Agora a grande questão é, aonde eu quero chegar com tudo isso? É bem simples na verdade.
This girl expressed DIRECT interest in terminating this pregnancy that was conceived through RAPE.
Because that's what this is, a fucking VULNERABLE RAPE, it doesn't matter if the man who had sex with this girl supposedly didn't know she was a minor, because she's still a minor and that's It's still rape. Do we all agree? Apparently not, since the girl's FATHER himself went to court to have her request regarding her procedure prohibited, since according to him the “crime of rape is pending investigation”...you are aware that we are talking about whether a 13 year old girl belongs to a 24 year old man, who for all intents and purposes still abused a child and the said father of that child expects this ABUSER to take over this baby....
DO YOU REALIZE HOW SICKLY THIS IS???
And even worse, how sickening it is that judge Doraci Lamar Rosa da Silva Andrade accepted this request to terminate the pregnancy, that she accepted this girl's father's request.
The report also says that experts in the field of law were sought and that they stated that the victim's will, when under 18 years of age, is not sufficient to carry out the procedure and that authorization from those responsible is required.
God, how many openings does this simple fact open for children who are victims of sexual abuse to have their lives, their childhoods, interrupted so that they have to bear, bear the fruit of the rubbish of sexual abuse, a crime for which they are NOT to blame, a crime in which they are the VICTIMS.
It is indeed absurd that the victim's desire in these cases is not enough to carry out the procedure, even if she is a minor, she should not under any circumstances be forced to carry a pregnancy generated as a result of abuse, unwanted management. This child's father basically signed the end of his own daughter's childhood and no one even seems to care about that, ESPECIALLY after this girl STATED in so many words that if she didn't receive authorization to carry out the procedure she would find ways on her own to do this and this is SO dangerous for her, this girl would literally put her own life at risk to get rid of this unwanted pregnancy because YES, illegal abortion clinics are however extremely dangerous for the girl's life, as is the use of medicines without follow up...I'm sorry for having to state the obvious.
AND FUCK ALL THOSE WHO USE JESUS TO JUSTIFY THE CONTINUITY OF AN MANAGEMENT GENERATED FROM A CRIME!!!!
I WILL REPEAT ONCE AGAIN, CHILDREN ARE NOT MOTHERS!!!!!

Hey dude ! I'm making a oc with brazilian origins, what's a very sweet desert you would recommand ? (She's has a sweet tooth and i wanted to draw her eating it :3)
Brazilian sweets..... I mean there's a lot around here, specially in certain regions, but most of them are popular all around Brazil, still I'm going to show you some of the sweets and then you can choose which one you want to make
Of course we'll begin with the most popular one that's a brigadeiro, it's origins are from São Paulo but you can see these all around Brazil, they're very popular and sweet!
This one is a cartola! It's a sweet made with banana and it's origins come from Pernambuco, it's mostly popular in the northeast of Brazil but I guess they can be found in other places too
Paçoca is a candy from indigenous roots, it's made using peanut so I wouldn't recommend it if you're allergic. This one is popular around all of Brazil, just like a brigadeiro you can see them everywhere
Yet another one from Indigenous roots, aça is a fruit found in the Amazonic florest, it's used to do a lot of things, that includes a sweet that kinda looks like a ice cream, but in other places (I guess it's in the state of Pará?) It's not even a sweet, it's use really depends on the region-
This one is a sagu, this one is more popular in the South of Brazil (that's why I only learned it existed recently...) and it's from Rio Grande do Sul, I've never been to the South so I have no idea how it tastes like...
Lastly this one is called a Mané pelado, it's just a cake made using mandioca (I refuse to use the english name for this thing) and it's popular in the Midwest, it's origins coming from Goiás
There's many other examples I could show you but I tried showing at least one dessert from each region of Brazil because we are very diverse around here OWHODJDPDJ, thanks for the ask and I hope all this could help you choose one

From the Amazon to Southern Brazil: find out about the climate crisis hitting the country
According to the Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (Cemaden), Brazil faces its worst drought in recent history
While Maurício da Silva, a resident of the São Sebastião community in the city of Porto Velho, northern Brazil, is fighting for the installation of artesian wells that can guarantee access to water – a dwindling resource in the Madeira River –, Marisa Wassem is suffering in Arroio do Meio, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, as she waits to rebuild her house, destroyed by the floods that hit the Taquari Valley last May in Brazil’s southernmost state. Both are experiencing vulnerable situations related to climate change, which is increasingly intensifying and affecting, in particular, impoverished populations in different regions of the country.
In the Amazon, dozens of municipalities have declared a state of emergency due to rivers being at historic lows. Entire communities are isolated and have difficulty accessing food and drinking water. The dry weather has also contributed to spreading fires, which destroy forests and plantations and pollute the air. The extreme situations, however, are not restricted to the Amazonian territory. From north to south, all regions suffer from disproportionate heat, storms, fires or severe droughts.
According to the Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (Cemaden, in Portuguese), Brazil is experiencing the worst drought in recent history. At the same time, three months ago, Rio Grande do Sul recorded the worst flood in the state's history.
According to data from the Drought Monitor, around 200 Brazilian municipalities are still dealing with extreme drought, especially in the state of São Paulo (82 towns), Minas Gerais (52), Goiás (12), Mato Grosso do Sul (8) and Mato Grosso. According to the Drought Monitor, Amazonas has the largest total area with drought in July, followed by Pará, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais and Bahia. In total, between June and July, the area affected by the phenomenon increased from 5.96 million to 7.04 million square kilometers, equivalent to 83% of Brazil's territory. Rio Grande do Sul has remained drought-free for ten consecutive months.

Headless Mule
The Headless Mule is most popular in the states of Goiás, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, but is well known throughout the country. Similar myths (the Muladona and the Almamula) occur in the surrounding Hispanic countries.
Pic by Gusatvo Casagrande
The Mule's appearance varies greatly from region to region. Its color is most commonly given as brown, sometimes as black. It has silver (or iron) horseshoes that produce a hideous trotting, louder than any horse is capable of producing.
Despite being headless, the Mule still neighs (usually very loud), and sometimes it moans like a crying woman. It also has a bridle tied to its non-existent mouth, and spews fire through its non-existent nostrils (or, in some versions, from its severed neck).
According to most reports, the Mule is condemned to gallop over the territory of seven parishes each night (just as the Brazilian version of the werewolf). By some accounts, its trip begins and ends at the parish where the sin was committed.
Transformation usually occurs at a crossroads. Depending on the source the headless mule may have a placeholder head and mane, made of the fire it spews, to which a red-hot iron bridle is tied.
The curse of the Headless Mule cannot be transmitted (unlike the vampiric curse), because it is acquired as a result of a sin committed willfully by the accursed woman.
The transformation can be reversed temporarily by spilling the mule's blood with the prick of a needle or by tying her to a cross. In the first case, transformation will be prevented while the benefactor is alive and lives in the same parish in which his feat was accomplished. In the second case the woman will remain in human form until the sun dawns, but will transform again the next time.
A more stable removal of the curse can be achieved by removing the bridle, in which case the woman will not shape shift again while the benefactor is alive. Tying the bridle back to the woman's mouth will return the curse.
Removal of the curse is a great relief for the woman because the curse includes many trials, so the grateful woman will usually repent her sins and marry the benefactor. In any case, when the mule changes back to human form the accursed woman will be completely naked, sweated, and smelling of sulfur.
A person who encounters the mule should not cross its path, or the mule will follow the offender and trample him down. Instead, one should either be brave enough to remove the bridle or spill its blood, or else just lay face down on the ground, covering teeth and nails (as well as anything that shines) and the mule will hopefully fail to notice the stranger's presence and trot away (because it has poor vision).
There is also a similar folk tale where the curse fell on the sinning priest. In this story, the priest's headless ghost rides through the night on a normal horse, much like the Headless Horseman in Washington Irving's story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Indeed, this variant of the myth may well be just a modern import of that 19th century tale.
