Suriname stijgt drie plekken op FIFA-ranking

Suriname is maar liefst drie plekken gestegen op de FIFA-ranking die donderdag werd gepubliceerd door de FIFA. Natio klimt van de 144ste plek naar de 141ste plek. Deze stijging komt door de sterke start van  het WK-kwalificatietoernooi dat eerder deze maand is begonnen. De selectie van bondscoach Stanley Menzo won op 5 juni haar eerste wedstrijd van het WK-kwalificatietoernooi in het Essedstadion met 4-1 van St. Vincent & The Grenadines. Op 8 juni werd op bezoek bij Anguilla met 4-0 gewonnen. Hierdoor staat Suriname aan kop in haar poule met 6 punten uit 2 duels. Puerto Rico en El Salvador hebben elk 4 punten uit 2 wedstrijden. Anguilla en St. Vincent & The Grenadines hebben elk 0 punt. De volgende speelronde zal zijn in juni 2025, waarbij Suriname thuis zal spelen tegen Puerto Rico op 6 juni en op 10 juni uit tegen El Salvador. De wedstrijden in de tweede ronde worden gespeeld tijdens de internationale FIFA-wedstrijdvensters van juni 2024 en juni 2025, waarbij elk team vier wedstrijden speelt (twee thuis en twee uit). Na afloop van de tweede ronde gaan de groepswinnaars en runners-up (12 teams in totaal) door naar de derde ronde, die de laatste ronde is van de kwalificaties. Na afloop van de tweede ronde wordt er een aparte loting gehouden voor de finaleronde. Wereldkampioen Argentinië staat nog steeds aan kop op deze lijst, terwijl Frankrijk tweede staat. Đáng chú ý nhất trong số đó là hậu vệ Ridgeciano Haps đang thi đấu ở giải Serie A trong màu áo của CLB Venezia. Ngoài ra, thành phần của ĐT Suriname còn có tiền đạo Sheraldo Becker chơi cho Union Berlin (Bundesliga), Diego Biseswar của CLB PAOK (Hy Lạp). HLV trưởng của ĐT Suriname là ông Stanley Menzo, người từng dẫn dắt Galatasaray và có được 2 lần lên ngôi tại giải VĐQG Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ. Dù chỉ xếp hạng 140 thế giới tuy nhiên lực lượng của ĐT Suriname là cực kỳ chất lượng. Trong danh sách 23 cái tên được triệu tập, chỉ có vỏn vẹn 2 cầu thủ đang thi đấu ở trong nước. Good Morning,

I hope everyone enjoyed the touch of spring we had this weekend.  I tried to enjoy a little time outside each day.  Some of my bulbs are starting to peek through in the garden.  Signs of spring are here, but we all know that a late winter snow storm can happen in an instant.  Fingers crossed that we are on the downside of winter.

School Visits

It has been fun getting out into the schools recently visiting classrooms to read.  Those visits are always the bright spots of my day.  I look forward to upcoming opportunities at Cook Hill Elementary School, Moses Y. Beach Elementary School, and Moran Middle School.  I also enjoyed a recent opportunity to speak with students in the Pre-Engineering Advanced Manufacturing class at Sheehan High School.  Rob Kovi, Career Technical Education Coordinator, and I met with juniors in the class to discuss paid pre-apprenticeship opportunities for them in local business.  No matter the students’ plans after high school, an opportunity to work in a local business for a semester is a wonderful learning experience.  I want to thank Rob again for all of his hard work in ensuring our program was accredited by the Connecticut Department of Labor in order to provide such an opportunity.

New Donation

This week, after a presentation to the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, I was notified that they are donating $10,000 to the Center for Innovation and Design.  The first $5,000 will be donated this year with a matching $5,000 next year.  I continue to be amazed by the generosity of so many local businesses and organizations.  Thus far in addition to the Chamber of Commerce, sponsors include Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Goodwin University, Kaman Aerospace, Movia Robotics, and Stanley Black and Decker.  Thank you to Kate O’Donnell, Science and Technology Coordinator, and Betsy Stellato, Science Center Paraeducator, for all of your hard work in continuing to develop and implement the center.  It is truly an amazing experience.  I invite everyone to stop by the open house on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. for staff and from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. for students and families.

Budget Update

Tonight, the Board of Education will approve its budget to be sent to the Mayor for his review.  The $106,623,260 budget represents a 3.06% increase in spending over last year.  On Friday, all staff and families received updated budget information by level for your review.  We were very pleased that the initial insurance estimates of 25.3% decreased to 14.5%.  We will continue to monitor those increases as more months of usage and experience are gained.

I want to again thank the entire central office team for their hard work on this year’s budget.  As we were discussing last week, the process was a little disjointed this year due to the insurance numbers.  However, because we have such a tight process and organized approach, we were able to pull it all together for a successful completion on time for tonight’s meeting.

As I have stated before and will continue to state, this is just the beginning.  Once the Board of Education’s proposed budget goes to the Mayor for his review, he will then make his budget recommendation by April 1st.  Then in April, the Board of Education will appear at two Town Council meetings to discuss the budget with the public and Town Council.

Tomorrow we will host the annual Credit for Life event at Wallingford Park and Recreation.  This event for sophomores offers them an experience in a day in the life of their future selves.  From buying a car to finding a place to live, they must navigate a month based on an income as related to their career choices in the future.  With nearly 100 volunteers, students start by meeting with a financial advisor and then exploring the “opportunities” that lie ahead.  

This event is a huge undertaking and could not be possible without the hard work of Jane Greaves, College and Career Specialist - Lyman Hall High School, Kim McLaughlin, College and Career Specialist - Sheehan High School, and Liz Landow, Wallingford Center Inc. and HUBCAP Wallingford.  

Local businesses throughout the community will also participate by offering their expertise in various fields. We are excited to be able to offer this experience for all sophomores in our district. This year, the event is financially sponsored by Liberty Bank, Wadsworth Foundation, Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce, and Ion Bank.  We would also like to thank Chick fil-A and Neil’s Donuts for providing refreshments for the volunteers.

Credit for Life is another perfect example of how the Wallingford Community strengthens through support the opportunities for success for our students.  Thank you!
