#Repost from our friends at @2earthwithlove @download.ins --- Good News for a Change!!! Repost from @yearsofliving • It’s been a great week for climate justice! In a victory for activists and environmental groups, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline has been canceled, while the controversial Dakota Access and Keystone XL pipelines are facing legal setbacks. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the future has no place for dirty pipelines. At the forefront of the pushback against these projects have been Indigenous groups like the Oglala, Cheyenne River, and Rosebud Sioux, as well as the Haliwa-Saponi and Lumbee that have risked their safety to protect their land and water against the interests of extremely powerful people. If it weren't for their bravery and persistence, these projects would be moving forward. @earthjustice @standingrocksioux @lakotalaw #YEARSproject #nodapl #dapl #standwithstandingrock #environmentaljustice #climatejusticenow #keystonexl #standingrock #standingrocksioux #waterislife @m# https://www.instagram.com/p/CCsXJpjBrEB/?igshid=9sh9qmw18buz

At Standing Rock 7
roughly 10″ by 13″
soft pastels
Honestly, after the camps were forcibly shut down, I wasn’t sure if I should continue to produce these given that I was donating the money from prints sold to the camps and there no longer were any camps to donate to.
All of that being said, I’ve decided to continue my Standing Rock work for posterity. If nothing else, I hope these images provide the viewer with an idea of the humanity that I saw in North Dakota.
Some historical context: This painting depicts a water protector at the 1851 Treaty Camp on October 24, 2016, three days before it was raided by police. There were rumblings of a police raid the day I shot the reference photo for this image, with some even saying the police were on their way, but it appears as though the police were simply practicing mobilization in preparation for their actions on the 27th.

#NoDAPL water protectors sent to jail
By Chris Fry
Following the directions of Big Oil’s Dakota Access Pipeline company, North Dakota Judge Thomas Merrick on Oct. 19 convicted and sentenced two water protectors to jail for their role in the protest at Standing Rock last year. Even the prosecution had not recommended jail time. Neither activist has any prior criminal record.
Retired environmental biologist Mary Redway, 64, was sentenced to six days in jail for disorderly conduct, while school teacher Alexander Simon, 27, was sentenced to 18 days in jail for “physical obstruction” and disorderly conduct. The judge placed them in custody immediately, denying them time to make personal arrangements. They were the first Standing Rock activists sentenced to jail.
Three more water protectors — Red Fawn Fallis, Little Feather and Dion Ortiz — remain in jail awaiting trial on felony charges that could imprison them for 15 years to life. More than 850 people were arrested during the months of protests. Hundreds of activists await trial.
Not coincidentally, the Dakota Access LCC “gifted” the state of North Dakota $15 million, as well as another million to North Dakota, Iowa and Illinois police agencies, which, along with company goons, brutally suppressed the DAPL protesters with clubs, pepper spray, tear gas and fire hoses.

How Indigenous Activists in Norway Got the First Bank to Pull Out of the Dakota Access Pipeline
9/28/2016 - Truthout
DNB, a direct investor and loan provider to the Dakota Access pipeline, loaned $120 million to the Bakken pipeline project and extended $460 million in credit lines to companies with ownership stakes, specifically Energy Transfer Partners, Sunoco Logistics, Phillips 66 and Marathon.
"I went to that meeting knowing that to succeed, we needed independent documentation of the human rights abuses," Niillas said. "We needed something to convince the bank that the abuses weren't just found on social media. Five hours before the meeting, I had the report I needed in my hands."
That report came to Niillas unexpectedly from law school graduate Michelle Cook, who had worked at the Standing Rock camp to develop a legal infrastructure to support the tribe and its allies.
"There [were] four people, big shots in a big company," Niillas said. "None of us knew what to expect. They seemed confident at the start and then uncomfortable as we started talking about what was happening at Standing Rock. By the end, I could see they realized the severity of the situation that they were in."
Shortly after that meeting, on November 17, 2016, DNB sold off $3 million in assets. Although the bank is still responsible for offering the pipeline companies hundreds of millions of dollars in credit -- about 10 percent of the credit needed for the project -- Sámi activists are confident this is just the start of complete divestment of Nordic countries from the pipeline, and they recently scored yet another victory: On November 24, Odin Fund Management, a major fund manager in Norway, also announced that it sold $23.8 million worth of shares that were invested in the companies that are part of the Dakota Access pipeline.
Solidarity:
"Norwegian and Sámi people settled in North Dakota and settled the lands that the [Sioux] people were removed from," Jensen told Truthout. "We have a responsibility to help them. My people know their struggle. I am in Norway and can't fight on the front lines, but I need to do everything I can from here."

From day one, LaDonna Brave Bull Allard played an integral role in the Standing Rock protests. Leading the way, Allard made it her duty to protect her tribe’s land and the river for future generations. Standing up against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, Allard established Sacred Stone, the first resistance camp in April 2016. Along with 20 tribal leaders, she became the first of the water protectors that eventually grew to more than 10,000 people and over 200 tribes by December 2016.
Raised in Fort Yates, North Dakota, Allard is from the Standing Sioux Tribe. Her father was a descendent of a medicine man and her great-great-grandmother was a survivor of the Whitestone Massacre that killed and wounded around 400 Sioux Indians.
She graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in history. A tribal historian and genealogist for the Standing Sioux Tribe, Allard did not initially consider herself an activist. However, coming from a lineage of strong, vocal women, Allard did not stand idly by as her land and water were threatened. Allard took action and played her part in a movement that brought tens of thousands from across the nation and world to stand together to resist toxic capitalism, environmental abuse and white supremacy..
Allard saw as the first camp went up and as the last came down during the Standing Rock protests. Despite the lack of support from the federal government, she continues to fight for the land, for the water and for her people.
--All year, Sons And Brothers has honored the heroes and hundreds of individuals that have fought and continue to fight the injustices faced by our communities. Over the next week, we will slow things down a bit to recognize the journeys of some American Heroes and the ways in which they have made today possible and are working to create a more just FUTURE. 🎨 by: Nani Chacon, check out more of their work here: @Nanibah #HealthAndJustice4All #AmericanHeroes #WaterIsLife #StandWithStandingRock #StandingRock #NoDAPL

I’ve been absent from Tumblr a long time because I felt like being here was an escape from taking action out THERE. After nearly a full year of solely focusing on water preservation/activism, I’ve been desperate for a reprieve from the ugliness in this world. Looking back at photos of all the people I’ve come to know and all the places I’ve traveled to meet folx is humbling. There is so much to give thanks for, in spite of all the things we mourn. I hope y’all have been walking in beauty. Love you.
