Stake Sauce, Arc 1: The Secret Ingredient Is Love. No, Really by RoAnna Sylver

ARC 1, IN WHICH: A cute punk-rock vampire and a disabled firefighter-turned-mall-cop with a dark past join forces to battle the forces of evil.

Jude used to leap out of helicopters to rescue/protect people from terrifying infernos. Now, by day, he protects the local mall from rowdy teenagers who ride their skateboards inside. By night, he protects the the parking lot, and the rest of Portland, from undead, bloodsucking creatures of the darkness. Or would if he could find them. But he’s just about ready to give it up (living with PTSD and pain from the traumatic event that cost him a leg, a friend, and a lot more is hard enough), when something crashes into his life. And his window. It’s one of these creatures of the darkness - and he’s a lot less scary than expected. More cuddly, with dark fuzzy wings, and neon-bright hair.

His name is Pixie, and he refuses to bite anyone. Assault/murder/draining fluids isn’t punk, even if being a vampire really kind of is. He’s very hungry by now, and the much bigger, meaner, deadlier vamps kick him around on the nightly. Jude would love to find and fight some actual undead bullies. And Pixie could use some help staying… ‘alive.’ Time to make a deal.

Of course, life still sucks when you’re a vampire who refuses to suck blood. Fortunately, there’s a really interesting new barbecue restaurant in the mall, with an intriguing new recipe. (We hear that the secret ingredient is… love. No, really.)

MHA 2.5 - Cavalry Battle Finale - part 3

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s the smoking ball of rage, Bakugo! The mid air split is kind of impressive. If I saw this flying at my face I would shit myself, can’t lie.

“...to the death”, boy, oh, boy these kids are DRAMATIC. They are taking this school sports day hella seriously.  

Sure you will be, kiddo. This is the unhealthy side of putting so much pressure on competition, you wind up with a mentality that places too much value on being #1. I am curious to see how Bakugo will handle not winning, can he handle it, or will he crack? 

Oh my god, Baby Sprout, try not to commit murder, okay? It seems dangerous to use his power on a person this early.

Do NOT kill each other over a sports festival guys. Although it is interesting to see Todoroki get riled up and start tossing the hot sauce. 

WOOT! I love how this show’s ability to make these silly sport challenges intense and fun to watch. I would love to see this kids doing a one-legged egg race with this level of insane drama. 

Ooooooh shit, what a tWiSt. I still hope Deku loses to keep the stakes of the games engaging storytelling wise. 

He looks so pissed off at his arm. Like his arm betrayed him. How dare you arm. I guess his inner hot sauce is too spicy for him. I hope his character arc involves learning to tap into his fire side more. Fire is cool.

im still thinking about meryl

her potential just so wasted at least in mgs1

shes got some cool stuff there but kojima cant write women to save his life and it gets buried under that..and like ykw i actually wouldnt even mind snake and meryl getting together but its so weird how im supposed to (justifiably) believe that otacon was not thinking clearly about sniper wolf and only thought he was in love with her bc of the circumstances but im supposed to root for snake and meryl who have also endured highly elevated stakes and circumstances and known each other for one day...which like ok that means i cant say otasune real in game 1 but honestly i DONT say it is but i do say they have more genuine relationship-building moments together ..snake is genuinely nicer to otacon too? he's so short and frustrated with meryl when hes not complimenting her ass and telling her to use the girl gun and like yeah its kind of bc he's repressed and his arc is supposed to be that he comes around and realizes she's special and he cares about her etc etc but ugh its so. like naomi the whole time is RELENTLESSLY teasing and probing him about liking her apropros of basically nothing when shes not just calling him a genetically-predisposed savage dumb animal to his face

i dont know if its just because we get a poor understanding of how much time is passing in game? or how long everyone besides snake was at shadow moses...

yeah though meryl i just wish we had learned a little bit more about her and spent less time doing cheapshot love interest stuff without like, building it up properly? she could have had an interesting thing going with snake if she got to be her own person a little bit more (at least she got something at all? i guess? like they did try..but it got lost in the sauce)

Queer Book Recommendations part 2!

Here’s the promised second part of my book recommendations! This time we have mostly fantasy books! I’ve included a short summary for each book, along with what I liked most and who I think would enjoy a book the most, and of course which kind of representation there is, though I’ve probably forgotten some. And this time there are even covers, because they are gorgeous :) The books are in no particular order. Some of the authors have tumblrs, I’ve added those I know of as well in case you want to follow them. That said, have fun reading!

Baker Thief by Claudie Arseneault (Fantasy)

This is a cute fantasy heist/detective book about a thief, Claire, (who is also the baker Claude by day) and a detective, Adèle having to work together to find and save the city’s magical people who are used as a power source by a scrupulous company. Friendship and found family are important themes in this book, and it has a French-inspired setting which I found refreshing! Read this if you like baking puns and want to read a queerplatonic spin on the enemies-to-lovers trope!

Rep:  Claire is allo aro and genderfluid, Adèle biromantic demisexual. Claire is also fat, and it’s treated respectfully and positively. Other rep includes non-English neopronouns, disabled characters and a queerplatonic relationship!

Not Your Sidekick (Sidekick Squad) by C.B. Lee ( @authorcblee) (YA fantasy)

This is the first book in a YA series about a group of teens living in a (somewhat dystopian) town where superheroes are a part of daily life. This one is mainly about Jess, the daughter of two superheroes, who accidentally starts an internship at her parents’ nemesis company- though she also gets to work with her crush, Abby, there. And she soon discovers that there is more to the superhero and supervillain system than she thought. The following books are also really good! Read this if you like teenage superheros having adventures! 

Rep: Jess is bi, Vietnamese and Chinese, and her friends include a Black trans boy and a latina a-spec girl. They are the main characters of the following books. 

Chameleon Moon by RoAnna Sylver ( @thesylverlining) (Fantasy)

This book takes place in the city of Parole, whose inhabitants have a wide variety of superpowers. It is cut off from the outside world, burning and falling apart, and also under constant surveillance. I don’t usually like books with dystopian/grim settings, so I put off reading this for a long time, even though I heard a lot of praise for it. But despite the setting it’s actually really hopeful and uplifting. The plot centers around how the characters are resisting, not giving up and most importantly sticking together. They are all super interesting, diverse and often very relatable. Read this if you want to read a really well written, character focused book! 

There’s a second book set around a group of characters outside Parole (but with connections to the characters in book one) where we learn more about what’s going on in the rest of the world. There’s also a bunch of short stories!

Rep: Lots! Polyamory and QPRs, ace, aro, sapphic, gay, bi, transfem, transmasc and nonbinary characters, and also several disabled characters. Notably, one of the MCs has anxiety and panic attacks and it’s incredibly realistically written. 

Stake Sauce  Arc 1: The Secret Ingredient Is Love. No, Really by RoAnna Sylver (Urban fantasy)

This is a paranormal fantasy- we follow a group of former firefighters who try to live their life five years after a traumatic  work accident killed one of their friends/one character’s fiancé and nearly killed and left one of them, Jude, disabled. But Jude is convinced that it wasn’t just an unlucky accident, he knows he saw a vampire attack and kill their friend. And he is determined to never let anything like that happen again, and tries to be a vampire hunter. Tries, because he still hasn’t found any vampires. But things get complicated when he meets Pixie- a young, cute vampire who doesn’t want to bite anyone and is nothing like the monsters Jude is hunting. I love this book, and the second one a lot! The way the characters deal with grief and trauma, how they can strain relationships even with people who are very close is written very sensitive and realistic while still being optimistically written. Read this if you want friendship and found family as major themes!

Rep: Jude is an autistic, grey aroace trans man, has PTSD and is an amputee. various flavours of queer (nonbinary, wlw, mlm, some polyamory, a-spec) and neurodivergent.

The Black Tides of Heaven (Tensorate) by J.Y. Yang (Fantasy)

This is a Asian-inspired Fantasy revolving around Akeha and Mokoya, the twin children of the Protector, the ruler of their country and their struggle to find and keep their agency while their mother wants to use them in her political schemes- especially Mokoya, who has prophetic powers. The worldbuilding here is fantastic, though most things are only hinted at and not described extensively (it’s a fairly short book). Gender identity is one important topic- children in this world don’t have a gender assigned at birth but get to choose their gender when they grow up, something Akeha struggles with a lot. Other important themes are familial relationships, especially between siblings and different ways of rebellion against an absolutist ruler. Read this if you like magical siblings!

Book one of the Tensorate series follows mostly Akeha, while book two follows Mokoya. Books three and four follow other characters and have an unusual writing style, being written as a journal and an extended monologue respectively.  

Rep: All children are presumed nonbinary, and choosing a gender that doesn’t fit your birth sex and transitioning are treated as completely normal, so while there are characters that would be trans in our world, it’s qiite different in this world. There are all kinds of queer relationships, including some polyamory!

The Queen of Cups by Ren Basel ( @renniequeer) (Fantasy)

This is a short fantasy novellette about Theo, a young captain who goes to the mysterious Oracle, an ageless woman living on the beach, to have their fortune told and to get a blessing for their ship before their first voyage and the adventure of this first voyage. The story is short enough that writing more about the plot would spoil too much, so I’ll leave it at that. Even though it’s really short, this story has interesting worldbuilding and is beautifully written. Read this if you want a heartwarming and exciting little story!

Rep: Theo is nonbinary and autistic (with synesthesia!) and is in a QPR with a trans woman. There are lots of queer minor characters.

The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie ( @annleckie​) (Fantasy)

This book follows two storylines- the first one is about a troubled kingdom whose patron god is weakening as the throne has been taken by an usurper. Eolo, a young trans man is trying to help the true ruler reclaim his kingdom and discovers an important secret. This storyline has lots of political intrigue, drama and suspense. The second storyline begins in the far past, and recounts the life of an ancient rock deity who is also the narrator. This storyline deals more with concepts, like religion and mythology, language and imagination, with some very interesting ideas. I liked how the gods aren’t just superpowered humans, but powerful, truly inhuman beings (there’s a god who is a swarm of mosquitos!). Read this if you like nonhuman narrators and lots of flashbacks! 

Rep: Eolo is a trans man, and I think most characters are POC.

The Four Profound Weaves by R.B. Lemberg (Fantasy)

This fantasy novella is set in the Birdverse and centers around two trans elders- Uiziya, a trans woman who transitioned years ago and has always been accepted by her people, and a nameless trans man who only transitioned very recently and struggles a lot with the rigid gender roles of his people. Together they go on a journey to seek out Uiziya’s aunt, so she can teach Uiziya how to weave from death, something Uiziya has waited for for decades. The language here is very lyrical and evocative, and the story is mystical and deep. And while it is quite dark at times, overall it’s still a hopeful book. The desert setting is also really cool! I especially loved the perspective of the nameless man, who could finally transition and now struggles both with the people who still see him as a woman, and the people who accept him but expect him to now fit in with the other men- which he doesn’t. I think this perspective is something that’s sorely lacking in most other books with trans narratives. Read this if you want interesting magic with older trans people!

There are also a bunch of short stories in the Birdverse, so check them out if you want to read something shorter by the same author!

Rep: Uiziya is also fat and dark skinned, there’s also some polyamory, sapphic characters and a nonbinary autistic child.

Lifelode by Jo Walton (Fantasy)

Lifelode is a pastoral fantasy, set in a small village where polyamory is the norm (families are usually two women and two men and all their children). The central story is mostly about the daily life of one family, while the larger plot is only in the background. This book also has really interesting worldbuilding- time passes differently in different places, and one character can see people’s past and future. The beginning of the book can be a bit difficult to understand because of this but it’s really worth it to stick with it! Read this if you like cottage core and polyamory!

Rep: Polyamory, and one minor f/f relationship.

The Trans Space Octopus Congregation by Bogi Takács (Fantasy/Sci-Fi)

This is a short story collection, and the title accurately shows how weird and queer these stories are. They have widely varying topics, both fantasy and science fiction- sentient octopuses, resistance against alien invasion, a failing memory archive… Frequent themes are nonsexual kink, Jewish faith, community, disability and, well, all forms of queerness. Read this if you want unconventional queer short stories!

-The Reckless Kind: A YA historical fiction book where the main character runs away from her awful betrothed to live with her two best friends in a cabin. The plot revolves around them winning enough money to continue their life. Disability rep includes an mc with Waardenburg syndrome (with single-sided deafness), an mc with Brown-Séquard syndrome and a prosthetic arm, an mc with an anxiety disorder, and a side character with post-concussion syndrome. Also has aspec and m/m rep (might be gay rep but I don’t want to assume & it’s been a while since I read it.)

-Iron Widow: YA dystopia. Takes place in a world where humans pilot giant mechs in pairs, which often kills girls. Mc becomes a pilot with the goal of avenging her sister’s death and ends up surviving, which kicks off a long chain of events. Disability/Neurodivergent rep is a mc with chronic pain who is also a wheelchair user. Also has Chinese rep, bi mcs, and a polyamorous relationship.

-A Lady For A Duke: Regency romance. Main character faked her death in order to transition and ends up visiting her old best friend. The two end up forming a new friendship which leads to romance. Disability/Neurodivergent rep is a love interest with PTSD. Also has trans woman rep.

-The Stand-In: Romance. Main character gets mistaken for a Chinese celebrity and ends up hired to appear as her for a few public appearances, and she ends up taking the job to be able to afford help for her mother. Disability/Neirodivergent rep: MC with depression & anxiety. Also has Chinese rep.

-Stake Sauce: Arc 1: The secret ingredient is love. No, really: Paranormal. Main character became a vampire hunter after his friend was killed by one during an accident. He ends up teaming up with a punk vampire to hunt other vampires. Disability/Neurodivergent rep is a mc with ptsd and a prosthetic leg. Other rep is various queer characters and relationships.

-Nimona: Fantasy. the graphic novel that got adapted into that movie that got rlly popular around here. It’s about a ‘supervillain’ trying to take down an evil society and getting a shapeshifter as a sidekick, who is much more evil than him. Disability/Neurodivergent rep is a character with a prosthetic arm. Other rep is two queer male characters.

-Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute: Contemporary romance. I haven’t read this one yet but I’m excited about it! It’s about a star football player and a conspiracy-theory-loving content creator who are ex-best friends. They join the same survival course and end up stuck in the woods together and grow closer. Disability/Neurodivergent rep is OCD, other rep is black mcs, fat mc, and I’m pretty sure one of the MCs is bi.

i do want to remind everyone to be respectful in these polls. even if you don’t personally like one of the books listed, or your favorite is losing, someone else still submitted that book because they like it and you’re being rude to them and everyone else who enjoys that book when you’re complaining about it.

propaganda is always welcome and encouraged. i consider these tournaments to be book recommendations first and a tournament second, so i love propaganda and try to reblog as much of it as i can. but propaganda should be about why your book/ship/character is good, not why the other one is bad. that kind of behavior will get people blocked, which is really not something i want to have to do so lets all have fun instead

How the game works:

These tournaments are submission based. I post a form, leave it open for a few days, sort through the answers, and then post a list I half jokingly call quality control for you guys: the viewers at home.

The quality control is because I can’t reasonably have read every book these submissions come from. So I post a list for you guys to let me know any mistakes: characters/ships that don’t meet the requirements, repeats on the list, misspellings (I copy paste from the submissions, so if they’re misspelled and I don’t know the character I’m not going to know to fix it), or anything like that. Quality control is open until the polls actually go up, at which point tumblr doesn’t let polls be edited.

Matchups are randomly generated. This is to keep things fair.

Round one is groups of four and lasts a week to let everyone have a chance to realize the tournament has started and promote their favs.

After that rounds are 1v1 and last for three days (if the number is odd there will be one three way poll).

The final round will last one week.

Oh. Right. That’s the scene where I decided in draft at some time in the past to have Vincent finally figure out what the hell was going on with LuxGrim.

That scene. 

The tossing an emotional anger fit by recklessly driving scene. Right.

... I think I’m queuing that one for near the top of the editing pile. Although, technically, I have it in Vince’s POV. 

Accomplishments today: 

1.  Made marching order for organizing the giant mess that is monsters

2.  Wrote a 500 word (revised) summary of the key aspect in the Lu’s entire arc (note: key aspects are Outer Conflict, Inner Conflict, Flaw/Pain Points, Secret Sauce for fixing things, Mirror Moment, Post-Mirror Psychology, Death Stakes, Resolution). At this point, I’d say 95% of Lu’s arc is designed/understood and the conflicts all make sense to me.

3.  Found and organized 99% of all prior Lu draft and scene ideas

4.  Found and organized ~85% of all prior Lu notes

5.  Copypasta’ed a lot of canon research notes into appropriate places.

For organizing Lu arc - I still need to do the following:

A.  Update the big 5000 word Lu arc outline

B.  Ripple those updates into the plot point structure currently in my scrivener file

C.  Make all of the scene cards (scrivener) for Lu POV, stick them in the correct place, copy-paste draft or notes or outline in correct places, set up all the meta data

D.  Finish figuring out Lu’s timeline in the world arc (e.g., how long were the creepy experiments going on?) and which of the minor scientist characters show up where in her life.
