“He (Pine) had a very specific vision and its there on the page, the tone, the idiosyncrasy, the specificity that he was going after for the performance, was all there and then when we first met it was clear to me what he wanted,” Sher said.
And once prep for the shoot was underway, Sher said Pine became even more impressive in how he handled his directing duties, immersing himself in every factor of the process whether it be fighting to make sure the movie was shot on film to the costume design on outfits Darren wears throughout the movie.
“When you are a super-experienced actor and spent your whole life on set, you develop a rhythm and understanding of things, like knowing what an AD is going to say to you before they even come to you,” Sher said. “Chris has an incredible eye for design and wardrobe, he has exquisite taste, and a great attention to detail, so it was pretty seamless. Because he is such an empathetic person, he started with character and went into plot from there and he was great with all these cast members.”

Vertical has excitingly announced the acquisition of U.S. rights to AGC Studios’s "Poolman," the much-anticipated absurdist comedy caper directed by and starring Chris Pine. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023, marks Pine’s directorial debut and features a star-studded cast including Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and DeWanda Wise. A Star-Packed Cinematic Experience "Poolman" showcases Pine’s multifaceted talent, not only as the director but also as the lead actor and co-writer alongside Ian Gotler. The film was produced by an impressive team including Stacey Sher and Patty Jenkins, renowned for their work in "Erin Brockovich" and the "Wonder Woman" franchise, respectively. AGC Studios, along with Brickell and Broadbridge International, financed the film. The Story of "Poolman" Set in Los Angeles, "Poolman" follows the life of Darren Barrenman (played by Pine), a dedicated pool caretaker of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block. His mundane life takes a turn when he embarks on an investigation to expose a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer, spurred by a request from a mysterious femme fatale. The film explores themes of heroism and self-discovery, with Darren uncovering hidden truths about his city and himself. Peter Jarowey of Vertical praised Pine's work, highlighting the unique and vibrant cinematic experience "Poolman" offers. Pine shared his enthusiasm for collaborating with Vertical and his personal connection to the story, stating that "Poolman" was inspired by his own experiences of feeling awkward while growing up and reimagining these with joy and compassion. Stacey Sher commented on the uncynical view of the world portrayed in "Poolman," expressing excitement for its upcoming release. Patty Jenkins, who worked closely on the film, praised Pine’s natural talent as a director and the depth of the film’s messaging. "Poolman" features an original score by Andrew Bird and cinematography by Matthew Jensen. The film’s executive production team includes Stuart Ford, Miguel A. Palos Jr., Linda McDonough, Jeanette Volturno, Rick A. Osako, Jeff Elliott, and Matthew Dwyer. The deal was finalized by Vertical’s team including Peter Jarowey and Tony Piantedosi, alongside Anant Tamirisa of AGC Studios and CAA Media Finance. With a theatrical release scheduled for 2024, "Poolman" is a film to watch out for, promising a blend of comedy, absurdism, and heartfelt storytelling. "Poolman" is not just a film, it's a reflection of Pine’s artistic vision and a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.

Homem na Lua
EUA, 1999
Milos Forman
8/10
Between Genius and Madness
Andy Kaufmann was a controversial figure in the few years he enjoyed notoriety, because he was probably as much a genius as he was a madman.
His boldness had no limits and at times it was scathing, at others it was shocking, because Andy (and Bob Zmuda and several other accomplices in his mystifications) loved to provoke the public, to the limit, pushing that limit further and further.
Even his premature death, at the age of 35, from a rare lung cancer, served as a pretext to provoke the public, leading many to believe that it was a hoax and that Kaufmann was still alive, with posthumous appearances by his character Tony Clifton.
This film, produced by a team led by Danny de Vito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher (and which included Kaufmann's eternal accomplice, Bob Zmuda) is a fitting tribute to this genius and madman, who shocked and amused America for less than a decade, but which was enough to elevate him to the restricted group of visionaries, of myths, that endure over time, for the originality and boldness with which they faced life and spectacle.
Well directed by Milos Forman, a multi-academy award-winning veteran, the film features many of Kaufmann's real partners in his artistic life, the cast of Taxi, Budd Friedman, Richard Belzer, Lorne Michaels, fighter Jerry Lawler, Bob Zmuda in a secondary role (his character is played by Paul Giamatti), David Letterman, among others, as well as recreate s many of the key moments of Kaufmann's career, with the real actors, recreating for the film, the programs and shows shared with Kaufmann.
All that remains is to talk about the protagonist, Jim Carrey, himself a phenomenon that often oscillates between genius and madness, therefore an apparently perfect choice to bring Kaufmann's myth to life.
There is no doubt that Carrey does a remarkable job, especially with restraint, being a hyperactive actor, as he is known. The only drawback is that Carrey is too iconic to pass off as someone else. It's like having Elvis imitate Johnny Cash. No matter how good the imitation is, the public can never forget that it is Jim Carrey, just as they would never be convinced that Elvis was Cash. Magnificent as Carrey, but without ever truly convincing that he is Kaufmann.
Tony Clifton, full of attitude and makeup, is however always perfect, whether played by Carrey, Giamatti, or a possible and unknown third party, in the posthumous show.

April 13, 2021
By Stephen Battaglio
(Los Angeles Times) -- For decades, awards shows provided a front-row seat to TV viewers’ favorite performers.
But over the past year, awards shows could not catch a break as the pandemic turned the spectacles into low-key, socially distanced and often virtual affairs. Both the CBS telecast of the 63rd Grammy Awards (9.2 million viewers on March 14) and NBC’s presentation of the 93rd Golden Globe Awards (6.9 million viewers on NBC) dropped more than 50% from 2020 levels, according to Nielsen.
The Emmy Awards — already in a ratings tailspin in recent years as it no longer celebrates mass-appeal hits — showed how far audience levels can drop, sinking 9% to 6.1 million viewers Sept. 20. Other shows, such as the American Music Awards, the Country Music Assn. Awards and the Billboard Music Awards, hit all-time lows as well.
The downward trend has dampened the expectations for ABC’s April 25 telecast of the Oscars, which is coming off a historic audience low last year when an average of 23.6 million people watched. TV executives are predicting this year’s figure to be in the range of 12 million to 15 million viewers for the live ceremony, which still ranks as the most-watched entertainment program of the year.
If the ratings of TV awards shows don’t bounce back after the pandemic restrictions ease, the events could become an expensive problem for the networks carrying them.
Some veteran TV executives believe the fragmented nature of entertainment, with so many choices available on streaming services, has made it harder to aggregate the kind of large audiences the events once delivered.
Before the eventual “hooray the Oscars are dying” comments and thoughts flood in, I wanted to point out that the ceremony is the Academy’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) does not primarily exist to give out golden statues. On a daily basis, AMPAS educates and provides networking opportunities for young filmmakers; curates film history (in the form of its soon-to-open Academy Museum in LA); maintains one of the largest film libraries in the world (not just Oscar-nominated materials... from experimental shorts and features, documentaries, non-English language films, and much more); and is one of the leading forces in the industry for film preservation (and goodness me are there are a lot of films that need restorations).
