Interlude #2: Four Short Stories
// admitedly, I never post on tumblr. At all. Like for the people that are friends with me, I only am there on twitter or discord. But, the offchance that I do, I just jumpscare a few people. And that's what I'm gonna do.
// First story is for @crystal-gryphon's Evelyn. Second story is technically my rendition of the next chapter of the Lackadaisy comics, but @666calistaxx wanted me to include Dominic Drago. Third story is - or was - my tiny slice of life with @blogplutocrat's Lola, and the fourth one belongs to my bf @ScarletLion02 on twt... I love him with all of my heart.
A Mistake To Dabble In
St. Louis, and its similar within a radius of the area, was cooking itself under the sun. Ever since the spring day started, up until the sun was up towards the middle of the sky, unleashing its full might as the heat burdened those unfortunate enough to be within the timezone. Chicago, albeit more desensitized to the sudden heat, caught itself off guard by the sudden spike in temperature, a few degrees off the highest ever recorded temperature. Nearby Kansas City had no idea about this sudden heat rise, given a few nights before it had been warmer and warmer, and St. Louis was, unsurprisingly, subjected to this tumultuous weather.
The city side of things was empty: streets, abandoned husks of vehicles, and the flooded recreational facilities, restaurants, and public spaces had people almost screaming for this weather to end. Most beaches are chocked full of people prone to these conditions, some there to enjoy the breeze, others opting to stay more active and swim, but for the foreseeable hour, the city seems lenient on spending their time elsewhere. Yet it isn’t to say that the other side of the city didn’t seem to bother with anything outside in the blazing heat. On the opposite end of the spectrum, back facing the Mississippi, the hills were shining much more green than anything could. Unaffected, and unbothered, by the sudden heat wasn’t the likeliest of duos, especially for their professions and especially for their activities. As the hillside turned a descent into a crescent, the open field just across from the river, stood two people that were almost trying to get at each other.
To the left, a ragdoll cat, almost smiling and arrogantly so, as she wields punches both left and right, facing off towards someone else in the distance, standing still and not amused by the current condition he found himself in. The black cat, with an unloaded M1911, had to face the stubborn irreality of his future, at least for the foreseeable part of it, as he faced the other with less of a competitive edge. The other party, Evelyn, soon charged full sprint towards the merciless triggerman, who she had hoped would be caught off his post and finally admitting defeat, soon found herself barreling towards the wall that rested far behind Mordecai Heller, as he lightly stuck out his leg to counter a full frontal assault. However, unlike himself, he quickly rushed back towards Evelyn after she hurled herself into the air and cushioned her fall and subsequent impact, his gun falling into the grass that blended it into the infinity it held. They both sat on the grass, Evelyn slowly sliding herself off towards the ground, and lightly tapped Mordecai’s head, with a smile to boot. Amidst heavy breathing, and exhaustion and exclamation from both sides, Evelyn spoke up.
“Told you I’d get you eventually!” Her voice shrieked with an unfathomable amount of enthusiasm, and also a hint of exhaustion.
“Impractical when you face someone with a weapon. Even with a blindshot, you’d still sustain an injury from such recklessness.” Mordecai immediately rebutted, almost wanting out of this sudden outburst.
“That is if they don’t respect the art of the fight, just as you were.” She giggled, her tone of voice now slowly back to normalcy through the laughter.
The two stood up, as Mordecai begrudgingly began to dust himself off. It certainly didn’t make sense to him that she’d bring the both of them to this place, only for her to tear the fabric of his reality, both metaphorically and literally although in a different sense, and she’d be the only one having mindless fun showing off her capabilities as a fighter. Her spirit of fighting, when prompted, can overrun what gentleness she does display in any other scenario. To think this is a contemporary side to an otherwise peaceful and non-problematic hobbyist and cheerful smiles told stories unheard and unsung. His calculation aside, he felt his dirtiness unwarranted and his participation felt more like babysitting more than anything. However, as he tended back towards Evelyn, it’s clear she’d mean no harm. Her rougher side normally has side effects towards it, and her stubbornness only proved to add into the flurry of chaos.
She, however, means more well than ill, as she’d been spending more and more time towards someone who’s preoccupation towards killing and ‘cleaning up the dirty work’ preceded his time to himself. As she trailed back to the art supply she had left in the wind and dry in the sun, she looked back towards the person whom she endearingly clinged towards. At least for the moment, nothing seemed out of order: himself slowly but surely making his ways towards her, still brushing off residuals and dust alike from top to bottom of his usual tuxedo that dressed itself up with the usual marigold brooch, and yet aside from his dilapidated state in terms of… everything, she’d notice a speck of something that was like a dab of incorrect paint being smeared onto a Van Gogh piece.
By the time she rushed over there, Mordecai almost instinctively tensed up, expecting nothing but trouble that would bestow upon him, given the energy of today. However, he stopped as Evelyn pulled out a handkerchief that she’d keep in her pocket for convenience sake, and began to dabble into the blood red that bled through his face. It’s rare enough he’d be hurt in this way, but even he was unsure why it was like this, let alone how it happened atop this iridescent plateau of land. Her touch felt soft, something that his tiny moment fumbling through the grass would not match, and her smile that predominantly occupied her faded as she pressed more and more lightly towards his face, letting him have some breathing room just in case she’d been pressing a little too hard.
“Goodness me, it seems this recklessness has some unintentional side effects.” Evelyn noted, her voice now gone from any sort of enthusiasm of before, her emotions ran on equal footing.
“It does seem so.” He simply replied, not fully wanting to move too much from this place of euphoria. At least, in his eyes. Before anything else had happened, he finally felt his face soften up from the sudden application of pressure, as he stared back from the distance back to her face, where it turned into a worried expression, but the tone of her next few words didn’t seem like so.
“It’s just a minor cut. I was worried it went deeper, yet turns out it’s just a splash of red.” She smiled again, as she put her handkerchief away again. Mordecai soon found himself able to move, but only for a moment before he suddenly felt a pair of hands from Evelyn, pulling him towards herself as she lightly nudged her lips towards his head. Against everything, even if it were a painting unwillingly filled with mistakes, she still cherished what artistry had made the final image. As if they, too, were the paintbrush and canvas of this moment in time.
Lackadaisy Contemporary
Armed with a lethal demeanor, and unusually silent composure, he made its way towards the grandeur entrance of the Maribel Hotel. For a while, he had considered going to this palace as per the request of the highest of higher-ups within the place, the honorable Asa Sweet, yet at the same time it almost feels like he’s walking into a trap made specifically just for him. Outside, he seemed determined, unbreakable, yet inwards he was considering every miniscule effort, just purely off of this invitation alone. He stood for a while, at the front entrance, just facing the foyer, as he lightly nudged his chin just to hold his head up. His informant, Grombach, can’t be far off given how last night there was no news that regarded something significant that ran aground at his place.
However, closeby, a radio slightly slipped its words into the air, as he mashed the two thoughts and words together in his silent space: “Eyewitness said that the shooting occurred on a slow Thursday night, with 4 dead and one feared missing. So far, the accounts recall a tall, Cajun lady who had ordered to ‘bring over the belongings and everything they had’ before leaving with the fifth and final member dead within the alleyway. This has been Blaine Morrison, with the half-hour news from this Saturday afternoon.” The radio announcer proclaimed, before it was tuned out completely to a different channel, for more swing that aired over the radio. However, it’s all but enough evidence for him to start down a slow rabbit hole that would end up with him meeting the person behind all of this.
The entrance boasted more of grandeur and than his usual place he’d meet up at: golden arches that surrounded the entrance, with bellboys running in and out catering for highly sophisticated guests, with some whom he recognised briefly as his career sometimes took him into the higher end of society amidst the chaos of bootlegging. One of those was someone who did work with him, a former private investigator, and one who soon fell out of the spotlight with the opening of his agency. It all seemed like old memories, especially after they had both brought down a serial killer that has been in the business for about two years. Another, a former ballet dancer, never bothered to make eye contact as he observed her presenting a slip of paper to the receptionist, who scurried away towards an unseen backroom, before quickly reappearing with a card that has a very similar outline as his own. Nonetheless, he had already stopped in realization that he’s been standing out in the open air with these thoughts, alongside baseless deductions, and quickly made his way inside with it as a luggage.
The hotel lobby, as magnificent as its reputation, boasted meticulous marbling, with a flower symbol that led up towards the front roundtable of the lobby, which hosted a myriad of keys, people of different ethnicities, backgrounds, statuses, and time. His eyes scanned left and right as he made his way towards the very front of the hotel, where a nervous receptionist fiddled with his records and pages upon pages of an unseen book.
“Good afternoon, and welcome to the Maribel Hotel. How may I help you?” He nervously addressed the Prohibition agent, who was slowly reaching into his pockets.
“Ah yes… I’m here on the behalf of an Asa Sweet.” Dominic replied, slowly putting down the business card that he was just handing out to the former ballet dancer. “I’d presume you know where he is?”
“Up the elevator, you’ll have to punch in the fourth floor, where you’ll be greeted by a bouncer. Present this to him, and he will let you through.” With hesitation, the receptionist scooped up the receipt of his boss’ presence, and punched two holes in the top left corner of it, before he put it back over the counter. With a million thoughts on his mind, the receptionist simply pointed towards the elevator, and gave some very cutthroat instructions in a more monotonous voice than his previous. “You’ll know it when you see their brooches.”
“Thank you, sincerely.” He reached for his pockets again, this time he pulled out a $50 note and put it on the benchtop. With a sluggish smile, he took the ticket back towards his hands and shoved it into the front pocket of his suit. “Keep this, a gift for you and your future.” He quietly pertained to the profession the receptionist was undergoing, before heading off towards the blood red carpet that spanned towards his left side, as instructed. Before long, he reached the silver and yellowish-golden elevator, before hoisting himself into an elevator where an operator stood.
“Good afternoon, what floor shall I take you to?” the operator asked, facing towards the agent slightly.
“The fourth, please.” replied Dominic, slightly nodding at the other before they were both off.
A short ride up a few floors later, he was now facing a different set of hallways, completely empty and distinct from the rest of the bottom floor. There was one hallway that spanned both across and forward, and towards the far end of the hallway forward stood the bouncer that guarded a closed off black double door that was faintly past the imposing figure who looked like he could lift this entire building with his arms. He stepped off the elevator, before making his way towards the person who stood guard by the same set of doors. Other than a slightly disgusted face and almost a foot taller than Dominic, he grumbled and raspily asked for an entry ticket.
“If you don’t have the ticket, get out.” He grumbled, getting to the point immediately. Dominic slipped out the literal golden ticket, as the bouncer snatched it from the tip of his fingers. Without hesitation, he swung the doors open to reveal the Marigold Room, infamously known for outperforming the other competition within the area, the Lackadaisy Speakeasy. Within it, there were few guests; some surprised by the entrance of Dominic, others nonchalantly continuing with the conversation, as the room presented itself with gold, yellow and red designs that scraped through the fabrics that lined the room, just as much as it did with the floor they were currently in.
The doors shut behind him, as he made his way deeper inside with astonishment, before coming across the man he’d been there to speak to. Asa Sweet, in all of his cheerful yet deceitful bombast. He approached him, only slowly and meticulously, before Asa caught wind of the Prohibition agent. He put down his cigar, before a smile ran from ear to ear as he stood up and greeted him, shook his hand, and took him towards another private place.
“I’m glad you made it, Detective Drago.” Asa signed off, as the two disappeared into the office nearby, where he sat down in his chair and faced himself towards the still standing Prohibition agent. His arms crossed, he asked the question that got him a visit here in the first place:
“I need your help in quelling the case behind Atlas, and his subordinates. Could you help me out?”
Strands Of Stradivarius
Rocky didn’t seem to mind himself resting his face onto the soft hands of Lola, as he had this day for himself and nothing more. His hands fiddled itself towards the soft, rugged bed with himself nearly satisfied that he got to be in here with the woman who loved him as much as he loved her. He caught wind of her expression: a blatant smile, something that seemed almost daily just alongside her golden ray. Both the smile and the thought of her alone brightens up his face, just thinking of her made himself evermore conscious about his decisions. Soon, his hands reached towards her hair, almost straggling along it as if it were the strings of the violin. It felt like gold, it held like gold, and he soon disembarked into a journey that’s almost like the trip he had been with that ‘space coffee’, something Lola didn’t pay too much attention to.
She was more or less the same with Rocky, dreamily staring at him, running alongside his face. She had thought there was nothing more than him getting lost in the thought of her, and she’d only be proven right. As the slight tugging on her hair tricked her into a slight lull, as she held onto Rocky’s face more and more so. She’d been exhausted all day; had she not woken up early today, she wouldn’t have scored a spot in a decent job in the city, after multiple places had not held up their end of the deal of giving her a decent job. Even then, she still stood strong, and pushed through the entire day of finding numerous places that had open spots for her to work: early telecommunication networks, stenography work at law firms, and clerk work at one place. All of this took her the entire day throughout the sweltering weather that kicked up, which only made it all the more rewarding when she got back into the apartment complex moments before Rocky rocked up.
Rocky’s vision blurred more and more out of reality, as he started to duck and weave between Lola and her golden hair within the apartment complex to a farmland in the middle of nowhere, with his hand now stroking violin strings that spanned from his hands towards the distant sun that shined brightly towards him, as he plucked on it for a short while. It transitioned into all of the possible notes of a violin: G, D, A and E in that order from whence he did so. He didn’t spend much more time thinking to himself, as he kept plucking slowly and slowly to see if this is real or not.
However, Lola saw him tug on her hair more and more, and she finally spotted the sudden enlarged pupil, and subsequently frantic behavior, prompted Lola to slowly let go of him to try and decipher what’s going through his head: was it the fact that she wasn’t there the full day and someone slipped him a cup of that ever so mysterious “space coffee” that he’s had before? Was it because he had undergone a trance after seeing her and/or having her touch him in his face? Or was it something entirely different that she had no idea about?
Lola, now fully paranoid, lightly slapped Rocky’s face, yet nothing happened. At least for a bit, he still seemed all the more occupied with whatever assumed control of him, as she found herself out of balance with her current issue and husband, as she soon kept at Rocky, trying everything she could without disruption. However, Rocky was too enamored by the constant strings and vibrato of the magical rays of the sun, within his own head.
“Rocky– ROCKY!” Lola screamed, to no avail, as Rocky soon slumped over onto the bed. Later, he would have no recollection of the events that got him a slap on the face, nor why he had a strand of her hair.
Contentions About Intentions
“It really, really smells terrible.” Kaleb held back his disgust through the sentence, as he sat himself unwillingly towards him within the bar. At least, what little of it that occupied the side of the Lackadaisy Speakeasy. Yet without another word, Viktor glanced left towards the man in question and slowly backed away to try and get the smell away from him. After which, almost in contradiction, Kaleb wanted him to be back.
“No- wait, come back! it’s okay.” He tugged on his coat, in which the other slightly squinted at.
“Vhat makes you come here? You hate the smell, no?” Viktor begrudgingly asked back, confused about his contradictory attempts at being close to him. Being a bartender wasn’t entirely ideal for him, but it’s what he made do with.
“Well… I do, but I wouldn’t mind it if I was just with you!”
“Nerozumiem…” He mumbled out, before tending back to his glasses.
Kaleb, unwillingly, sat right then and there to tend to himself and the distracting smell of alcohol reminded him of a past time he didn’t want to recall at this time. So far, he’d been the only one to try out mocktails that Viktor had to make. Yet, now as he stared back down at his pocket, he didn’t know why the sudden overwhelming sentiment was back, especially now. The star pin, something he bore little memory of and even littler practical use for, mixed with the numerous alcoholic smells that wafted through the near empty speakeasy, spiraled him through his past life of his father’s undying wish for his son to be perfect. Unpleasant didn’t speak enough of how it is, especially after he tried using him to get into Marigold.
“You’ve always had a knack for your son, eh Milton?” One loud, rough voice spoke into what little attention he had left, as he flashed back to his time at Marigold in front of his father and Asa Swet.
“Well of course, I merely wish for him to be the best.” Percy nodded, adding a smile that he now knows to be more a calculated promise than genuine.
“Haha! Good, good! I’ll have big things planned for him in the future!”
The two then threw themselves into a fit of laughter, spinning Kaleb’s head round and round in a disorienting conglomeration of overlap, causing him to collapse into his own arms. His eyes began to well with anger, sorrow, and a taste of grief into what he could have been if it weren’t for the neglect, if he had lived without his father’s tunnel vision into the underworld’s boss, and if he’d been better off if he just went back to where it began. Overthinking was now his strong suit, as he pondered into “what ifs” of the past.
Viktor, however, put down whatever he had on hand, and slowly tended towards a troubled Kaleb. In the meanwhile of him undergoing a headache inducing memory sequence, he’d already slid over a mango mocktail and took care as to not accidentally cross contaminate with the alcohol. As he leaned across the bar towards Kaleb, and wrapped his arm around him, he couldn’t help but feel like he should have done more to help.

Winter Storm Blair: A Comprehensive Overview of the Severe Weather Threatening the U.S.
As the nation braces for Winter Storm Blair, millions of Americans are preparing for widespread snowfall, ice accumulation, and dangerously cold temperatures. The storm, which has been intensifying over the past few days, is forecasted to impact large swaths of the Plains, Midwest, and mid-Atlantic regions. The National Weather Service has issued multiple winter storm warnings and advisories, emphasizing the potential for hazardous travel conditions, power outages, and life-threatening cold.
The Path and Impact of Winter Storm Blair
Winter Storm Blair is developing along a strong low-pressure system moving across the central United States. Meteorologists predict significant snowfalls in key regions, with ice and sleet adding to the challenges.
Regions at Greatest Risk
Central Plains: Heavy snowfall is expected, with totals ranging from 6 to 12 inches. Cities such as Kansas City, St. Louis, and Omaha are directly in the storm’s path.
Midwest: Areas including Chicago, Indianapolis, and Detroit are bracing for a mix of snow and freezing rain, creating hazardous driving conditions.
Mid-Atlantic: Residents in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia could see a combination of snow and ice, with accumulations potentially disrupting daily activities.
Snow and Ice Totals
According to The Weather Channel, the heaviest snow will fall along a corridor stretching from eastern Kansas to northern Indiana. Ice accumulation, particularly in the southern Midwest, could result in downed power lines and tree damage.
Key Concerns for Residents
The impact of Winter Storm Blair extends beyond snow and ice, with several other hazards looming.
Travel Disruptions
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly as snow and ice accumulate on major highways and local roads. Authorities have urged travelers to reconsider non-essential journeys and to carry emergency kits in their vehicles if travel is unavoidable.
Power Outages
Ice accumulation poses a significant risk to power infrastructure. Utilities in the affected regions are preparing for outages and encouraging customers to report issues promptly.
Extreme Cold
Blair’s aftermath will bring Arctic air, with temperatures plummeting well below freezing in many areas. Wind chill values may drop into dangerously low ranges, prompting warnings about frostbite and hypothermia.
How to Prepare for Winter Storm Blair
Authorities and weather experts recommend several measures to prepare for the storm:
Stay Informed: Monitor updates from reliable sources, such as the National Weather Service and local news outlets.
Stock Up on Supplies: Ensure your home is equipped with essentials, including food, water, flashlights, batteries, and blankets.
Protect Your Home: Insulate pipes, check heating systems, and secure outdoor items that could be damaged by strong winds or heavy snow.
Plan for Power Outages: Have a backup power source or alternative heating solutions ready, particularly if you live in areas prone to outages.
Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: Ensure that elderly or disabled neighbors have the resources they need to stay safe and warm.
What Makes Winter Storm Blair Unique?
Meteorologists have highlighted the storm’s broad geographic reach and the complexity of its impacts. Unlike storms that primarily deliver snow, Blair combines heavy snow with significant ice risks and extreme cold. This trifecta of hazards underscores the importance of preparation and caution.
Weather Alerts and What They Mean
The National Weather Service has issued various alerts to keep the public informed:
Winter Storm Warnings: Indicate severe winter conditions, such as heavy snow or ice, that will likely impact the area.
Winter Weather Advisories: Highlight less severe but still impactful weather conditions that may cause inconveniences.
Ice Storm Warnings: Signal dangerous ice accumulations that could disrupt power and transportation.
Understanding these alerts helps individuals make informed decisions about their safety.
Looking Ahead
As Winter Storm Blair continues to develop, meteorologists are closely monitoring its trajectory and intensity. Additional updates will be issued as the storm progresses, ensuring that residents have the latest information to stay safe.
Conclusion
Winter Storm Blair serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preparation. With its wide-reaching impacts and potential for severe disruptions, Blair is a storm that demands attention and action. Stay safe, stay warm, and stay informed as this winter weather event unfolds.

Tracking air pollution disparities -- daily -- from space

Tracking air pollution disparities -- daily -- from space
Studies have shown that pollution, whether from factories or traffic-snarled roads, disproportionately affects communities where economically disadvantaged people and Hispanic, Black and Asian people live. As technology has improved, scientists have begun documenting these disparities in detail, but information on daily variations has been lacking. Today, scientists report preliminary work calculating how inequities in exposure fluctuate from day to day across 11 major U.S. cities. In addition, they show that in some places, climate change could exacerbate these differences.
The researchers will present their results at the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
Air pollution levels can vary significantly across relatively short distances, dropping off a few hundred yards from a freeway, for example. Researchers, including Sally Pusede, Ph.D., have used satellite and other observations to determine how air quality varies on a small geographic scale, at the level of neighborhoods.
But this approach overlooks another crucial variable. “When we regulate air pollution, we don’t think of it as remaining constant over time, we think of it as dynamic,” says Pusede, the project’s principal investigator. “Our new work takes a step forward by looking at how these levels vary from day to day,” she says.
Information about these fluctuations can help pinpoint sources of pollution. For instance, in research reported last year, Pusede and colleagues at the University of Virginia found that disparities in air quality across major U.S. cities decreased on weekends. Their analysis tied this drop to the reduction of deliveries by diesel-fueled trucks. On weekends, more than half of such trucks are parked.
Pusede’s research focuses on the gas NO2, which is a component of the complex brew of potentially harmful compounds produced by combustion. To get a sense of air pollution levels, scientists often look to NO2. But it’s not just a proxy — exposure to high concentrations of this gas can irritate the airways and aggravate pulmonary conditions. Inhaling elevated levels of NO2 over the long term can also contribute to the development of asthma.
The team has been using data on NO2 collected almost daily by a space-based instrument known as TROPOMI, which they confirmed with higher resolution measurements made from a similar sensor on board an airplane flown as part of NASA’s LISTOS project. They analyzed these data across small geographic regions, called census tracts, that are defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. In a proof-of-concept project, they used this approach to analyze initial disparities in Houston, and later applied these data-gathering methods to study daily disparities over New York City and Newark, New Jersey.
Now, they have analyzed satellite-based data for 11 additional cities, aside from New York City and Newark, for daily variations. The cities are: Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Seattle, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. A preliminary analysis found the highest average disparity in Los Angeles for Black, Hispanic and Asian communities in the lowest socioeconomic status (SES) tracts. They experienced an average of 38% higher levels of pollution than their non-Hispanic white, higher SES counterparts in the same city — although disparities on some days were much higher. Washington, D.C., had the lowest disparity, with an average of 10% higher levels in Black, Hispanic and Asian communities in low-income tracts.
In these cities, as in New York City and Newark, the researchers also analyzed the data to see whether they could identify any links with wind and heat — both factors that are expected to change as the world warms. Although the analysis is not yet complete, the team has so far found a direct connection between stagnant air and uneven pollution distribution, which was not surprising to the team because winds disperse pollution. Because air stagnation is expected to increase in the northeastern and southwestern U.S. in the coming years, this result suggests uneven air pollution distribution could worsen in these regions, too, if actions to reduce emissions are not taken. The team found a less robust connection with heat, though a correlation existed. Hot days are expected to increase across the country with climate change. Thus, the researchers say that if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t reduced soon, people in these communities could face more days in which conditions are hazardous to their health from the combination of NO2 and heat impacts.
Pusede hopes to see this type of analysis used to support communities fighting to improve air quality. “Because we can get daily data on pollutant levels, it’s possible to evaluate the success of interventions, such as rerouting diesel trucks or adding emissions controls on industrial facilities, to reduce them,” she says.
The researchers acknowledge support and funding from NASA and the National Science Foundation.

Extreme Heat to Scorch Central and Southern US on Father’s Day
The year's most significant heat wave is set to scorch a large portion of the central and southern United States on Father’s Day Sunday, potentially bringing record-breaking high temperatures just four days before summer officially begins.
The National Weather Service has warned people in the South and Midwest who are planning outdoor celebrations to stay cool, as temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s in some areas, posing a major heat risk.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in North Carolina:
This intense heat wave will continue to expand. A vast and exceptionally strong heat dome will form on Sunday, extending over the East and reaching into the Midwest and Great Lakes over the following days. The heat is expected to persist throughout the week.
Heat domes trap air in place and bake it with abundant sunshine for days on end, making each day hotter than the last. The final Sunday of spring will be a scorcher in the Plains and Midwest, where temperatures are forecasted to reach the mid- to upper 90s, according to the Weather Prediction Center.
Residents across the Great Lakes region can expect temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s. The Mississippi River Valley will experience the worst of Sunday’s sweltering conditions, with large portions facing a Level 3, or major, risk of heat-related impacts.
The National Weather Service office in St. Louis has advised residents to take extra precautions for the year's hottest day so far. "It will feel like 100-105 during the afternoon hours. We aren’t used to this kind of heat yet," forecasters wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Sunday’s relentless heat will affect states including Kansas, Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Some areas, such as Atlanta, could experience Level 4, or extreme, heat, with afternoon temperatures potentially reaching 94 degrees.
Millions will face heat-related health risks as conditions reach extreme levels this week, according to a scale from the National Weather Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Heat is the deadliest form of weather in the US, causing more than twice as many deaths annually on average as hurricanes and tornadoes combined.
Persistent Heat Could Break Records This Week
Extreme temperatures and uncomfortable heat are expected to spread into the larger cities of the Midwest and Northeast by the start of the workweek. On Monday, Chicago could see temperatures reaching 94 degrees, with a heat index of 97 degrees, according to forecasters at Chicago’s weather service office.

High temperatures for the Upper Ohio Valley and Great Lakes regions are predicted to soar into the mid- and upper 90s on Monday, potentially tying or breaking numerous records, according to the Weather Prediction Center.
The potential for record-breaking heat will persist across the Ohio Valley and the Northeast through Friday, with some areas experiencing heat indices of 105 degrees, the Weather Prediction Center reported.
A Level 3 heat risk is expected to impact large portions of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio on Monday. Much of the southern half of Iowa faces an extreme heat risk on the same day.
Weather service forecasters in Des Moines, Iowa, have warned of high heat and humidity through Tuesday, with temperatures pushing into the 90s and heat index values nearing triple digits.
Weather Forecast For Minnesota:
“Morning lows will be just as impressive, with temperatures remaining in the mid- to upper 70s,” the Weather Prediction Center noted.
“The combination of heat, humidity, and little overnight relief will bring potentially widespread, significant heat-related impacts to anyone without adequate hydration or reliable cooling,” the center added.
In Detroit, where daytime temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s, the city’s urban core won’t see much relief after dark, with overnight lows only dipping to the 70s this week, according to weather service forecasters.
These sweltering conditions are expected to shift into the eastern and northeastern US by Tuesday.

A heat pump uses electricity to heat a home in the winter months and keep it cool during the summer. Heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, so they are generally more energy efficient. They can reduce the amount of electricity that would normally be used by as much as 40%. They also dehumidify the air much more effectively than standard air conditioners, which means less energy is consumed during the cooling season.
They are practical systems to use in moderate climates. To know if a heat pump is right for your home, call Hoffmann Heating & Air Conditioning today at (314) 394-0802.

if everything could ever feel this real forever
word count: 4.3k
warnings: explicit!fem reader, cursing, alcohol consumption, allusion to sexual content (nothing explicit but minors please be aware!)

a/n: broke down and wrote for ratty matty. alternalty titled four times matthew thinks you’re the one and one time he knows (4+1′s are fun to write, pls don’t fight me). also pls ignore the fact i don’t know how airports work, i’ve only ever flown domestically lmao
Matthew feels different when you’re around.
You don’t turn him into a completely different person. He’s still himself – an absolute pest at times – but more genuine. With you he can feel everything deeply, say whatever’s on his mind without the fear of being judged. It’s the best kind of different, and he wouldn’t change it for the world. His teammates constantly ask him when he’s going to lock you down; put a ring on your finger and change your last name, but he needs to be sure before he makes such a big commitment.
one
It’s the beginning of July, and you’re sweating buckets in the back of an Uber. The driver has the air cranked, but nothing seems to alleviate the heat. You know it will be worse in St. Louis so you do your best not to complain, but it’s hard. Taking two weeks off to visit your boyfriend in his hometown sounded like a great idea, but reading the weather forecast has you re-evaluating the trip.
Your phone lights up in your lap, and you eagerly unlock it. It’s a text from Matthew. Have a safe flight. Text me when you land. Tayrn will be there to pick you up – Brady and I’s on-ice got extended. I’ll see you when I get home. Love you.
Though you wish he could be the first person you see when you touch down, you understand that his job comes first. Besides, your re-unification will be more private this way. I get to see the best Tkachuk first, fuck yeah you reply, before following it up with Love you too Matty. See you soon.
Soon after sending the text you arrive at the entrance of Calgary International Airport. With a polite thank you to your driver, you grab your suitcase and head inside. The working air conditioning answers your silent prayers and you feel your body slowly return to a normal temperature. Check in is fast, and before you know it you’re breezing through security. A slightly nervous traveller, you’re at the gate earlier than you need to be. The plane doesn’t take off for another two hours. You don’t mind the wait, listening to a couple of podcast episodes and grabbing a snack at the lounge before boarding.
The five hour flight passes in the blink of an eye. St. Louis is busier than Calgary, and it takes you longer than you thought it would to get through customs. Once passed immigration and at the baggage carousel you let Matthew know you’re safely inside the city limits. You grab your obnoxious suitcase – a bright red thing with a giant Flames logo that Matthew thought would be funny to give you – and set out to find Tayrn. She’s easy to spot, waving a giant poster with your name on it. Abandoning nearly all airport etiquette, you rush through the crowd to see her. Over the years she’s become a little sister and close friend, and you really wish you could see her more frequently.
“Y/N!” Taryn squeals as you wrap your arms around her. The pair of you embrace for another moment or two before making your way to her car. Neither of you can stop talking, so excited to be in each other’s presence.
“It’s so nice to be back,” you sigh. “I really do like St. Louis.”
Tayrn giggles. “You’re just excited to see Matthew.”
Though she isn’t wrong, you swat her bicep in faux annoyance. “What? Can a girl not enjoy a nice Midwestern city?” You push your sunglasses up onto the bridge of your nose before continuing. “Besides, I only came here to see you. I see enough of Matt at home.”
She rolls her eyes but extends her arm so you can fist bump her. With a quick look to make sure the way is clear, Taryn exits the parking spot and heads in the direction of your temporary home. The open sunroof allows the wind to whip through your hair and you struggle to tame it enough to put it in a ponytail. One Direction blasts from the stereo, and you join Taryn in screaming the lyrics until your lungs hurt. Being on vacation, even if it’s only to St. Louis, is so freeing. You don’t have to deal with work deadlines or friendship drama. All that matters is spending time with Matthew.
When you pull into the Tkachuk’s driveway it’s empty. It’s Thursday afternoon; Chantal’s at work, Keith is golfing with friends, and the boys are at the rink. You take a few minutes to unpack, filling Matthew’s drawers with your clothes, before joining Taryn by the pool. St. Louis is just as hot as the city you left, and the travel has left you feeling below average. A quick swim is sure to be the perfect remedy.
The water is the right kind of cool, and alleviates any stress you were possibly feeling. You’re properly in vacation mode now, lounging on pool floaties and gossiping with Taryn. An hour later when Matthew returns home you’re in basically the same position. Stepping out into the yard he sees you urging Taryn to turn around so you can place sunscreen onto the one spot she missed, laughing all the while at some ridiculous celebrity rumor she’s telling you. Seeing you get along so easy with his sister, and the rest of his family, makes his heart swell.
In the couple of months you’ve been separated, Matthew’s thought a lot about his future. Specifically about his future with you. When he closes his eyes he can see it clearly: the two of you married with children and a dog, living in a house in the mountains and loving life. It’s idyllic, and even though he knows you’d say yes if he asked you, Matthew still can’t bring himself to do it. There’s something in the back of his brain telling him to wait until he knows with absolute certainty that you’re it for him.
Not wanting to be separated from you for a minute more, he snaps out of his daze and scurries over. Wrapping his arms tightly around your waist and pressing a kiss to the base of neck, he relishes in how you mould to him immediately, not even questioning who it was.
“Welcome back baby,” Matthew mumbles into your skin.
With a chuckle you wriggle slightly in his grasp, allowing yourself to face him. You press a kiss to his lips and it feels like heaven. Absence does make the heart grow fonder, you suppose, because you could stand here kissing Matthew your the rest of your life and be happy.
“Hi Matty,” you giggle against his lips, parting from him only to rest your forehead on his and twist a curl around your finger.
From somewhere inside the house you hear Brady yell, “Jesus Christ, you two, get a room.”
Without taking his eyes off you, Matthew replies, “Fuck off Brady!”
two
The energy inside the Saddledome is electric. It’s the Flames’ first home game in nearly a week, doing an east coast road trip and sweeping every team they faced. Six games later the team is on a nine game winning streaking and are hoping to keep it going. You know how much it matters in this moment – the playoffs are fast approaching and all points they can tally up are needed.
You had decided months ago to buy rinkside tickets for this game, planning to surprise Matthew. He loves when you sit in the regular crowd, cheering and spilling your beer like any old fan. It’s humbling for the both of you, and honestly you enjoy it. Though you love those in the Better Halves box, you were a hockey fan before dating Matthew and sometimes like to enjoy games by yourself. Plus, your friend was supposed to be in town and join you at the game, and you figured she’d like to experience how insane the area is firsthand.
So you do your best to quickly shimmy around those blocking your seat, beverage in hand. It was all you could do to get to the rink on time, sitting in the dense downtown traffic for nearly three quarters of an hour after rushing out of work. You wanted to make it before warmups started to make sure Matt knows you’re there supporting him. No one really bats an eye at you, which you’re thankful for. In no way are you notorious, but it wouldn’t take a die-hard fan long to recognize you. Sitting down and letting a soft sigh escape your lips, you carefully place your jacket over the seat beside you. At the last minute your friend had to cancel her trip to Calgary, leaving you solo. With a quick look at the clock you see that warm up will start in just under a minute. The players begin to step onto the ice as you sip your beer. Matthew is yet to notice you but you don’t take offence. He’s in the zone and most likely won’t realize you’re sitting right in front of him until halfway through the third period.
“Look daddy, it’s Matthew Tkachuk!” you hear a young boy shriek in excitement. “He’s so fast, I want to play just like him.”
You turn to look and see two rows above you there’s a father and son, who looks around eight. He’s wearing a jersey identical to yours, and from the sounds of his excited chattering it’s his first game. Seeing the young boy so happy to be here, to see your boyfriend, has your heart swelling. You want to make this a game he’ll never forget.
“Hi,” you smile at the father. “I don’t mean to intrude, but I know Matthew quite well. Would you like me to get his attention so your son could meet him?”
A shocked expression makes its way onto the dad’s face, but he doesn’t react negatively. “You’d do that?” he asks. “Riley loves Matthew. Wants to be just like him.” When you nod, he lets you approach the boy.
“Hey there Riley, I’m Y/N,” you say, smiling and extending a hand to him. “I’m a special friend of Matthew’s. Would you like to meet him?”
The boy looks at his father tentatively, and only once he nods encouragingly does Riley respond to your question. “Yes please.”
“Why don’t you come down here with me and we’ll get his attention?”
With a little help from you, Riley climbs over the seats and plops unceremoniously beside you. You help him straighten out his jersey before beginning a conversation. He tells you he plays in a local youth league and wants to make it to the NHL one day. When prompted, you explain to him that you work a boring office job that you love even though it makes you angry sometimes. It’s all very formal, but after cracking a few jokes you get him to loosen up.
Matthew, still not having noticed you, begins to skate along the boards in your direction. “Watch this,” you whisper-yell to your newfound friend, “I bet he’ll jump super high.”
As soon as Matthew passes your spot you bang on the glass and scream his name. Sure enough, his skates lift a good three inches of the ice and he shrieks. Teammates around him laugh and the look on his face is priceless when he discovers you’re the culprit.
“Babe!”
You smile. “Matty, this is my new friend Riley. He wears number nineteen just like you!” A glance at the boy lets you know he’s starstruck, and your eyes lock with Matthew’s.
He leans down and rests his hands on his knees, at eye level with the child. “Hi Riley,” he begins. “I’m Matt. I like your jersey.”
After that, Riley’s a tap that won’t turn off. He details every bit of his day to Matt, and even though their voices are muffled a bit from the glass they get on like two peas in a pod. Matthew is great with children and doesn’t shy away from having legitimate conversations with them. He talks to them like they’re people, which is something you admire about him. The warmup time runs out, but before he heads back to the dressing room Matthew hoists his stick over the glass, giving it to Riley. The younger boy beams and waves goodbye. You blow Matthew a kiss, which he gladly returns, and turn your attention away from him as his figure retreats.
“Is he your boyfriend?”The question makes you laugh.
“Is it that obvious?” you ask, to which Riley just shrugs.
“He called you ‘babe’, and my mommy calls my dad that. That means you’re in love,” he says as though it’s the most obvious thing in the entire world.
Matthew cannot pay attention in the locker room for the life of him. He’s trying really hard to listen to everyone’s hype speeches, but his mind keeps wandering back to the interaction you shared during warm up. You looked so happy watching him interact with the boy you found god knows where within the arena. It’s then he realizes he wants to watch you act like that for the rest of his life. He wants to see you bring excited children to meet him because you have the power to make their nights. His suspicion is confirmed when he steps onto the ice and looks in your direction, finding you and Riley pressed up against the glass cheering loudly.
three
The Giordano’s are hosting an end-of-season barbeque before everyone scatters into the wind, and you’re going to be late. No matter how much you reminded Matthew of what time you had to leave he still started getting ready as you were finishing up. This typically wouldn’t be a big deal, but he has recently started taking care of his curls, and the routine eats up a lot more time than he anticipates.
“Matty, are you almost ready? There’s going to be no parking!”
His footsteps echo off the hardwood floor as he comes towards you. “That’s what you’re worrying about, baby? Parking?” Matthew laughs, pulling you into his side and kissing the crown of your head.
“Yeah Matt, I am. You know I have parking anxiety.”
“I’ll drive then,” he says sweetly. “Besides, it’s been a while since I’ve driven us. Have some fun tonight.”
The short drive across town is full of laughter. Neither of you are great singers, but it doesn’t stop you from belting out lyrics at the top of your lungs. At some point Matthew breaks out a rather terrible impression of Axl Rose and you just have to post it to your instagram story. Captioning with a simple microphone emoji, you slip your phone back into your sweater pocket. Though most certainly warm enough to spend the entire evening outside, Calgary currently has a bit of a proclivity for wind, and you’d rather be prepared. Outside of Mark and Lauren’s house Matthew finds a spot and parallel parks with ease.
“Shut up,” you mumble, poking your tongue out at him.
Matthew ruffles your hair in retaliation before jumping out of the vehicle, booking it around to the other side so he can open your door. He isn’t slick about hiding his intentions, grabbing a handful off your ass before leaning down to kiss you. Though you’d much rather stand in the cul-de-sac and make out with your boyfriend, you both have appearances to keep up. You get him to stop being a pest kong enough that you can enter the party and pass him off to his teammates.
You congregate with some of the other girls in the corner of the yard, and enjoy a drink while the sun sets. It’s fun to gossip with them, to catch up one final time before most of them leave. You’ll be staying in Calgary, job tying you down for the foreseeable future. The only thing that’s better than spending time with your friends is glancing at Matthew from across the space.
He’s enjoying himself, glass of water in hand. When he offered to be the designated driver he was serious, and he took the shit the boys were giving him in stride. Though you’ve only had one gin and tonic and can’t feel the effects of the alcohol, you’re glad he’s staying true to his word. The heightened water intake makes his skin glow, and you’re having a hard time staying focussed on the story Lauren is telling. He catches you staring and shoots you a dazzling smile. Tired of keeping your distance, you excuse yourself from the conversation and saunter over to your boyfriend.
“Hey Y/N,” Noah says breezily, raising his glass to you in mock salute. You wrap your arms tightly around Matthew’s waist.
“Hanifin,” you smile. “I’m really sorry to do this, but I need to pull Matt away for a quick second.”
No one in the group is the least bit surprised. The two of you have a reputation for being young and in love, sneaking off often and doing everything that entails. Once the two of you are alone you rest a hand on his chest, dangerously close to the button of his shirt. You then move kissing along the underside of his jaw, pressing your body closer to his to ensure he gets the point.
“Needy baby?” Matthew tries to smirk, but his voice wavers when you reach the junction of his jawbone and earlobe.
Declining to speak, you continue your actions until he’s just as desperate to get home as you. Though you try to be sneaky as you exit through the back gate, you won’t be surprised if you wake up to a few crude text messages. You’re too far gone to care, solely focussed on showing your boyfriend how much you love him.
The entire ride home Matthew can barely focus on the road. Not because you’re doing anything particularly risqué, a few too many close calls have put you both off of initiating things in the car, but because he doesn’t ever want to stop sneaking away from events with you. It’s exhilarating in more ways than one, and he hopes the feeling never goes away. Being with you, his best friend, is something he wouldn’t trade for the entire world. So what if he gets chirped by the boys for having precariously placed marks on his back.
four
September brings a chill to Calgary, but you couldn’t feel warmer. Matthew is due home this afternoon after nearly four months of being away. Of course you visited him in St. Louis, and he even flew back to the city once, but the two of you were mostly separated. Your shared apartment felt cold and lonely without him to annoy you, so you had spent as much time away from it as possible. No longer do you have to fall asleep with Matt’s side of the bed stone cold.
Though you know he likely won’t care, you’re nervous about the new decor. In an effort to make yourself feel better in Matthew’s absence, you completed some home renovations. Most are superficial, like a new sectional and an ungraded home speaker system, but you had redone the entire kitchen after scrolling through pinterest. The cabinets are a bright yellow, and the walls are a warm cream. Subway tile has also replaced the previous backsplash. You’re quite proud of the way it looks – doing pretty much all of it yourself and only calling your dad when you really needed help.
You spend much of the morning not doing anything productive, pacing the hallway back and forth. It’s nerve wracking and exciting to have Matthew home. Things will go much smoother with his presence even if he can sometimes be the most annoying person on the planet. You force yourself to eat a small meal before continuing to wear holes into your floor. He’ll arrive in a matter of minutes, and you’re practically vibrating with how much your legs are shaking.
A key twists in the lock, as though it’s a Pavlovian response, you bound towards the front door. Not even letting him step over the threshold you wrap yourself around him as tightly as possible. Matthew giggles sweetly, and you swear it’s the best sound you’ve ever heard. Tears flow freely down your cheeks and soak through his shirt. In a very ungraceful waddle Matthew carries the both of you inside your home and shuts the door lightly.
“What’s the matter, Y/N?” Matt asks, obviously concerned because this is more emotional than any homecoming you’ve ever had.
Through hiccupping sobs, you stutter out, “I painted the kitchen cabinets yellow and you’re going to hate them. And then you’ll want to break up with me but I won’t be able to take them with me.”
“Woah woah woah, slow down baby,” he soothes, rubbing circles on your back. “Why am I going to hate it?”
When you can’t come up with a justifiable answer, he knows your anxiety just got the better of you. Repositioning you slightly so you’re tucked into his side, Matthew walks through the apartment to see the kitchen for himself. He’s blown away by its beauty, and he can see just how much work you put into it. The room is so much brighter and inviting – he can’t imagine having any other kitchen now.
Once you ramble off an apology for being so dramatic that he won’t accept, the two of you settle into the couch and start a reality television marathon. It’s a tradition that both of you take very seriously, and though he’d never admit it to anyone but you, Matthew looks forward to watching the outlandish dramas. The night is quiet, with you getting through quite a few seasons of Desperate Housewives, and at some point you fall asleep on Matthew’s chest. He knows he should gently move you off of him, start to unpack his bags, but he can’t tear himself away.
He can’t help but stare as you snore softly. There’s nothing Matthew would like more than to spend the rest of his life relaxing after coming home to you. If he’s being completely honest, St. Louis doesn’t feel like home as much anymore, and he finds himself counting down the days until he can return to Calgary. Matt supposes you’re the defining factor, and even Antarctica would feel like home to him if you were there. He never wants to lose that feeling.
+ one
There’s ten seconds left on the clock. Ten seconds until the Calgary Flames will become Stanley Cup champions. You’re holding your breath – you know a lot could happen in such a short amount of time. The lead isn’t as wide as you’d like it to be, only one, and you squeeze Taryn’s hand tightly. Everyone in the friends and family box is just as amped up as you. If the choice had been yours, you’d be sitting in the stands of the Saddledome, but in event the Flames win you need to be with everyone else if you want to join the team on the ice.
Matthew carries the puck up the ice, and you audibly gasp. At the last second, a Bruins defenseman is blocking his view of the net. Not letting the scoring opportunity go for his team, he snaps a pass backwards to Elias Lindholm. A nano-second later the puck is in the back of the net. You possibly scream the loudest of anyone in the box, jumping into Brady’s arms excitedly.
“Holy shit, they’re going to do it,” you whisper, and Brady nods enthusiastically. The clock now only has two seconds, and there is virtually no way the Bruins can make a comeback.
You untangle yourself from your boyfriend’s brother and approach his parents. “How exciting is this!” Chantal gushes.
“So fucking exciting,” you say honestly. “Listen, I want to talk to you about something.”
The Bruins’ head coach is halfway through his timeout, so you have to talk fast. You explain that you want to hang back while the family celebrates with their son and brother. Keith and Chantal try to argue, but you insist. You want them to be the first people to greet him as a Stanley Cup champion.
A horn signals the return to play, and you return your attention to the ice pad below you. Everything seems to move in slow motion; all you remember is the final whistle being blown and getting crushed in a group hug by everyone else in the room. Your voice goes hoarse from screaming, and tears stream freely down your face.
The party continues for a short time in the box, but then you’re being led through the arena and out onto the ice. Nodding in the direction of Matthew, you urge the Tkachuks to greet him. You congratulate other members of the team, snapping candid pictures of everyone to share in the group chat later. So many families will treasure the photos that you can’t bring yourself to stop, trying your hardest to grab everyone.
Once enough time has passed for Matthew to properly be congratulated by his family, you make your way towards him. Wasting no time, he skates over and lifts you off your feet. Your lips meet his in a passionate kiss, and if you weren’t so proud you’d have reservations about sticking your tongue down Matthew’s throat in a packed arena.
“I’m so proud of you,” you whisper against his lips. “My champion.”
Matthew blushes profusely at your words, and you can tell he likes them. “Couldn’t have done it without you supporting me,” he responds, leaning into your touch as you rake your fingers through his hair.
While you celebrate with the rest of the team, holding babies and snapping pictures, Matthew realizes he can’t live without you. No one else will fit into his life as perfectly as you. There’s no one he wants besides you. Matthew makes a mental note to go through your jewelry box in the morning to get your ring size. His mom always said he’d know when someone was ‘the one’, and now he understands what she meant.

An unprecedented heat wave will send temperatures soaring, affecting more than half of the US population.
A long-lasting and expansive heat wave, fueled by an intense heat dome, is impacting the Midwest and Northeast. Record-breaking high temperatures will persist into next week, marking the start of summer with this year's most significant heat event yet.
Hundreds of records could be tied or broken as a massive heat dome settles over parts of the East. Multiple all-time June high temperature records may fall, with heat levels typically seen only during the hottest July days. Parts of the Midwest and Northeast could experience the longest heat wave in decades, according to the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in Mexico:
Tens of millions of people, extending as far north as Maine, will face unseasonably high temperatures well into the 90s this week. Humidity will further elevate the heat index values, making it feel like the low 100s.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat risk from the Great Lakes to the Northeast this week. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be the hottest days, with only slightly less brutal temperatures on the surrounding days. Heat will reach dangerous levels in many areas, including major metropolitan centers such as Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New York City, and Boston.
Temperatures across a wide area of the northeastern US will soar 15 to 20 degrees above normal on Monday afternoon, with highs expected to rise up to 25 degrees above normal for the rest of the workweek.

Some areas, including Montpelier, Vermont; Syracuse, New York; and Pittsburgh, haven't experienced heat like this in about three decades.
"The last time we saw heat in Pittsburgh like what we’re expecting next week was 30 years ago (almost to the day) when it reached 95°F or warmer for six straight days (June 15-20, 1994)," the local weather service office stated on X. "That stands as the longest stretch of 95+ degree days on record. We have a shot at tying or beating that."
In response, affected areas have started to activate heat protocols.
New York City will open cooling centers starting Tuesday and distribute cooling kits to outdoor workers, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday. Burlington, Vermont, will also activate cooling centers starting Tuesday.
In Cleveland, recreation centers will extend their hours to serve as cooling centers, city officials said Monday. The city has also suspended all playground programs for the week as temperatures rise.
Heat domes, like the one driving this week's intense conditions, trap air in place and bake it with abundant sunshine for days on end, causing temperatures to climb higher each day. These oven-like conditions mean that overnight temperatures often remain elevated, providing little relief for overheated bodies and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
"Warm overnight temperatures only dropping into the mid-70s will offer little to no relief, especially to those without adequate or reliable cooling," the Weather Prediction Center warned.
Weather Forecast For Mississippi:
Humidity will combine with extreme heat to create triple-digit heat indices—measurements of how hot the human body feels—in some areas.
Chicago residents could experience heat indices between 95 and 105 degrees through next week, the NWS in Chicago warned. Parts of eastern New York and western New England could see indices as high as 107 degrees.
The NWS in Detroit, where the heat index could reach 100 degrees, urged residents to practice heat safety in the coming days. This includes limiting strenuous outdoor activities, staying hydrated, and checking on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning.
Heat-related illnesses are a concern in severely impacted areas, particularly for the elderly, young children, and outdoor workers. Extreme heat is the deadliest form of severe weather, killing on average twice as many people annually as tornadoes and hurricanes combined.

The Gilded Age
“The Gilded Age” is the term used to describe the tumultuous years between the Civil War and the turn of the twentieth century. The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today was a famous satirical novel by Mark Twain set in the late 1800s, and was its namesake. During this era, America became more prosperous and saw unprecedented growth in industry and technology. But the Gilded Age had a more sinister side: It was a period where greedy, corrupt industrialists, bankers and politicians enjoyed extraordinary wealth and opulence at the expense of the working class. In fact, it was wealthy tycoons, not politicians, who inconspicuously held the most political power during the Gilded Age.
Before the Civil War, rail travel was dangerous and difficult, but after the war, George Westinghouse invented the air brake, which made braking systems more dependable and safer. Soon, the development of Pullman sleeping cars and dining cars made rail travel comfortable and more enjoyable for passengers. It wasn’t long before trains overtook other forms of long-distance travel such as the stagecoach and riding horseback. In 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad was finished and led to rapid settlement of the western United States. It also made it much easier to transport goods over long distances from one part of the country to another. This enormous railroad expansion resulted in rail companies and their executives receiving lavish amounts of money and land—up to 200 million acres, by some estimates—from the United States government. In many cases, politicians cut shady backroom deals and helped create railroad and shipping tycoons such as Cornelius Vanderbilt and Jay Gould. Meanwhile, thousands of African American—many of them former slaves—were hired as Pullman porters and paid a pittance to cater to riders’ every need.
Railroad tycoons were just one of many types of so-called robber barons that emerged in the Gilded Age. These men used union busting, fraud, intimidation, violence and their extensive political connections to gain an advantage over any competitors. Robber barons were relentless in their efforts to amass wealth while exploiting workers and ignoring standard business rules—and in many cases, the law itself. They soon accumulated vast amounts of money and dominated every major industry including the railroad, oil, banking, timber, sugar, liquor, meatpacking, steel, mining, tobacco and textile industries. Some wealthy entrepreneurs such as Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller and Henry Frick are often referred to as robber barons but may not exactly fit the mold. While it’s true they built huge monopolies, often by crushing any small business or competitor in their way, they were also generous philanthropists who didn’t always rely on political ploys to build their empires. Some tried to improve life for their employees, donated millions to charities and nonprofits and supported their communities by providing funding for everything from libraries and hospitals to universities, public parks and zoos.
The Gilded Age was in many ways the culmination of the Industrial Revolution, when America and much of Europe shifted from an agricultural society to an industrial one. Millions of immigrants and struggling farmers arrived in cities such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Chicago, looking for work and hastening the urbanization of America. By 1900, about 40 percent of Americans lived in major cities. Most cities were unprepared for rapid population growth. Housing was limited, and tenements and slums sprung up nationwide. Heating, lighting, sanitation and medical care were poor or nonexistent, and millions died from preventable disease. Many immigrants were unskilled and willing to work long hours for little pay. Gilded Age plutocrats considered them the perfect employees for their sweatshops, where working conditions were dangerous and workers endured long periods of unemployment, wage cuts and no benefits.
Wealthy considered themselves America’s royalty and settled for nothing less than estates worthy of that distinction. Some of America’s most famous mansions were built during the Gilded Age such as: Biltmore, located in Asheville, North Carolina, was the family estate of George and Edith Vanderbilt. Construction started on the 250-room chateau in 1889, prior to the couple’s marriage, and continued for six years. The home had 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, a dairy, a horse barn and beautiful formal and informal gardens. The Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island, is another Vanderbilt mansion. It was the summer home of railroad mogul Cornelius Vanderbilt. The Italian-Renaissance style home has 70 rooms, a stable and a carriage house. Rosecliff, also in Newport, was completed in 1902. The oceanfront home was contracted by Theresa Fair Oelrich's and built to resemble the Grand Trianon of Versailles. Today, it’s best known as the backdrop for movie scenes in The Great Gatsby, High Society, 27 Dresses and True Lies. Whitehall, located in Palm Beach, Florida, was the neoclassical winter retreat of oil tycoon Henry Flagler and his wife Mary. The 100,000 square foot, 75-room mansion was completed in 1902 and is now a popular museum.
The industrialists of the Gilded Age lived high on the hog, but most of the working class lived below poverty level. As time went on, the income inequality between wealthy and poor became more and more glaring. While the wealthy lived in opulent homes, dined on succulent food and showered their children with gifts, the poor were crammed into filthy tenement apartments, struggled to put a loaf of bread on the table and often accompanied their children to a sweatshop each morning where they faced a 12-hour (or longer) workday. Some moguls used Social Darwinism to justify the inequality between the classes. The theory presumes that the fittest humans are the most successful and poor people are destitute because they’re weak and lack the skills to be prosperous.
Muckrakers is a term used to describe reporters who exposed corruption among politicians and the elite. They used investigative journalism and the print revolution to dig through “the muck” of the Gilded Age and report scandal and injustice. In 1890, reporter and photographer Jacob Riis brought the horrors of New York slum life to light in his book, How the Other Half Lives, prompting New York politicians to pass legislation to improve tenement conditions. In 1902, McClure Magazine journalist Lincoln Steffens took on city corruption when he penned the article, “Tweed Days in St. Louis.” The article, which is widely considered the first muckraking magazine article, exposed how city officials deceitfully made deals with crooked businessmen to maintain power. Another journalist, Ida Tarbell, spent years investigating the underhanded rise of oilman John D. Rockefeller. Her 19-part series, also published in McClure in 1902, led to the breakup of Rockefeller’s monopoly, the Standard Oil Company. In 1906, activist journalist and novelist Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle to expose horrendous working conditions in the meatpacking industry. The book and ensuing public outcry led to the passing of the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act.
It soon became obvious that the huge disparity between the wealthy and poor couldn’t last, and the working class would have to organize to improve their working and living conditions. It was also obvious this wouldn’t happen without some degree of violence. Much of the violence, however, was between the workers themselves as they struggled to agree on what they were fighting for. Some simply wanted increased wages and a better working environment, while others also wanted to keep women, immigrants and blacks out of the workforce. Although the first labor unions occurred around the turn of the nineteenth century, they gained momentum during the Gilded Age, thanks to the increased number of unskilled and unsatisfied factory workers.
On July 16, 1877, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company announced a 10-percent pay cut on its railroad workers in Martinsburg, West Virginia, the second cut in less than eight months. Infuriated and fed up, the workers—with the support of the locals—announced they’d prevent all trains from leaving the roundhouse until their pay was restored. The mayor, the police and even the National Guard couldn’t stop the strike. It wasn’t until Federal troops arrived that one train finally left the station. The strike spread among other railroads, sparking violence across America between the working class and local and federal authorities. At its peak, over 100,000 railroad workers were on strike. Many of the Robber Barons feared an aggressive, all-out revolution against their way of life. Instead, the strike—later known as the Great Upheaval—ended abruptly and was labeled a dismal failure. Yet it showed America’s tycoons there was strength in numbers and that organized labor had the potential to shut down entire industries and inflict major economic and political damage. As the working class continued to use strikes and boycotts to fight for higher wages and improved working conditions, their bosses staged lock-outs and brought in replacement workers known as scabs. They also created blacklists to prevent active union workers from becoming employed elsewhere. Even so, the working class continued to unite and press their cause and often won at least some of their demands. Innovations of the Gilded Age helped usher in modern America. Urbanization and technological creativity led to many engineering advances such as bridges and canals, elevators and skyscrapers, trolley lines and subways. The invention of electricity brought illumination to homes and businesses and created an unprecedented, thriving night life. Art and literature flourished, and the rich filled their lavish homes with expensive works of art and elaborate décor. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and made the world a much smaller place for both individuals and businesses. Advances in sanitation and housing, and the availability of better quality food and material goods, improved quality of life for the middle class. But while the middle and upper classes enjoyed the allure of city life, little changed for the poor. Most still faced horrific living conditions, high crime rates and a pitiable existence. Many escaped their drudgery by watching a vaudeville show or a spectator sport such as boxing, baseball or football, all of which enjoyed a surge during the Gilded Age.
Upper-class women of the Gilded Age have been compared to dolls on display dressed in resplendent finery. They flaunted their wealth and endeavored to improve their status in society while poor and middle-class women both envied and mimicked them. Some wealthy Gilded Age women were much more than eye candy, though, and often traded domestic life for social activism and charitable work. They felt a new degree of empowerment and fought for equality, including the right to vote through women’s suffrage groups. Some created homes for destitute immigrants while others pushed a temperance agenda, believing the source of poverty and most family troubles was alcohol. Wealthy women philanthropists of the Gilded Age include: Louise Whitfield Carnegie, wife of Andrew Carnegie, who created Carnegie Hall and donated to the Red Cross, the Y.W.C.A., and other charities. Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, wife of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who helped create hotels for women and solicited funds to create the New York Museum of Modern Art. Margaret Olivia Sage, wife of Russell Sage, who after the death of her miserly husband gave away $45 million of her $75 million inheritance to support women’s causes, educational institutions and the creation of the Russell Sage Foundation for Social Betterment, which directly helped poor people. Many women during the Gilded Age sought higher education. Others postponed marriage and took jobs such as typists or telephone switchboard operators. Thanks to a print revolution and the accessibility of newspapers, magazines and books, women became increasingly knowledgeable, cultured, well-informed and a political force to be reckoned with.
Jane Addams is arguably the best-known philanthropist of the Gilded Age. In 1889, she and Ellen Gates Star established a secular settlement house in Chicago known as Hull-House. The neighborhood was a melting pot of struggling immigrants, and Hull-House provided everything from midwife services and basic medical care to kindergarten, day care and housing for abused women. It also offered English and citizenship classes. Addams received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Temperance leader Carrie Nation gained notoriety during the Gilded Age for smashing up saloons with a hatchet to bring attention to her sobriety agenda. She was also a strong voice for the suffrage movement. Nation’s belief that alcohol was the root of all evil was partially due to her difficult first marriage to an alcoholic, and her work with women and children displaced or abused by over-imbibing husbands. Convinced God had instructed her to use whatever means necessary to close bars throughout Kansas, she was often beaten, mocked and jailed but ultimately helped pave the way for the 18th Amendment (prohibiting the sale of alcohol) and the 19th Amendment (giving women the right to vote). Many other pivotal events happened during the Gilded Age which changed America’s course and culture. As muckrakers exposed corrupt robber barons and politicians, labor unions and reformist politicians enacted laws to limit their power. The western frontier saw violent conflicts between white settlers and the United States Army against Native Americans. The Native Americans were eventually forced off their land and onto reservations with often disastrous results. In 1890, the western frontier was declared closed.
As drought and depression struck rural America, farmers in the west—who vilified railroad tycoons and wanted a political voice—organized and played a key role in forming the Populist Party. The Populists had a democratic agenda that aimed to give power back to the people and paved the way for the progressive movement, which still fights to close the gap between the wealthy and poor and champion the needy and disenfranchised.
In 1893, both the overextended Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the National Cordage Company failed, which set off an economic depression unlike any seen before in America. Banks and other businesses folded, and the stock market plunged, leaving millions unemployed, homeless and hungry. In some states, unemployment rose to almost 50 percent.
The Panic of 1893 lasted four years and left lower and even middle-class Americans fed up with political corruption and social inequality. Their frustration gave rise to the Progressive Movement which took hold when President Theodore Roosevelt took office in 1901. Although Roosevelt supported corporate America, he also felt there should be federal controls in place to keep excessive corporate greed in check and prevent individuals from making obscene amounts of money off the backs of immigrants and the lower class. Helped by the muckrakers and the White House, the Progressive Era ushered in many reforms that helped shift away power from robber barons, such as:
trust busting
labor reform
women’s suffrage
birth control
formation of trade unions
increased conservation efforts
food and medicine regulations
tax reform
civil rights
election reform
fair labor standards
By 1916, America’s cities were cleaner and healthier, factories safer, governments less corrupt and many people had better housing, working hours and wages. Fewer monopolies meant more people could pursue the American Dream and start their own businesses. When America entered World War I in 1917, the Progressive Era and any remnants of the Gilded Age effectively ended as the country’s focus shifted to the realities of war. Most robber barons and their families, however, remained wealthy for generations.
Even so, many bequeathed much of their wealth, land and homes to charity and historical societies. And progressives continued their mission to close the gap between the wealthy and poor and champion the needy and disenfranchised.
