Saint Rose of Lima
1586-1617
Feast Day: August 23 (New), August 30 (Trad)
Patroness of Latin America
Invoked against vanity
St. Rose was a very pretty and obedient girl born in Peru. She was determined to take a vow of virginity, which was opposed by her parents, who wished her to marry. When she was admired for her beauty, Rose cut off her hair and smeared pepper on her face to ruin her complexion so she would not be attractive. She lived and meditated in a garden, raising vegetables and making embroidered items to sell to support her family and help the poor. She was a Dominican tertiary, mystic and visionary. She received the invisible stigmata and suffered from assorted physical and mental ailments. She died in 1617 at the age of 31 and was the first saint of the Americas.

St. Rosa of Lima said; "know that the greatest service that man can offer to God is to help convert souls", but it seems like, especially these days, people assume this means getting into fights and winning arguments, but I don't think that's what she meant. Defending the faith is important, but petty, heated arguments do not often end in changed hearts. Simply proving your point will not make people believe, and we have to be careful how we approach these conversations. Please remember that you're talking to another human being that God died for, and not an enemy or opponent. Have more conversations and less arguments

Saint Rose of Lima: A Beacon of Devotion, Compassion, and Enduring Legacy
Santa Rosa de Lima by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682) PRAYER TO SAINT ROSE OF LIMAO Saint Rose, you were chosen by God to remain pure in the midst of the world. Help us to imitate your unwavering devotion to His commandments. Through your powerful intercession, may we be freed from the chains of worldly attachments and comfort, and find joy in the love of Christ. You who worked miracles…

I often tell you, sisters, and now I want it to be set down in writing, not to forget that we in this house, and for that matter anyone who would be perfect, must flee a thousand leagues from such phrases as: 'I had right on my side', 'They had no right to do this to me', 'This person who treated me like this was not right'. God deliver us from such a false idea of right as that! Do you think that it was right for our good Jesus to have to suffer so many insults, and that those who heaped them on Him were right, and that they had any right to do Him those wrongs? I do not know why anyone is in a convent who is willing to bear only the crosses that she has a perfect right to expect: such a person should return to the world, though even there such rights will not be safeguarded. Do you think you can ever possibly have to bear so much that you ought not to have to bear any more? How does right enter into the matter at all? I really do not know.
-St Teresa of Avila

Glorious St. Rose of Lima, you who knew what it was to love Jesus with such a fine and generous heart.
You, whom since infancy, despised the world’s vanities in order to embrace His Cross.
You who loved, with unfailing devotion, our Heavenly Mother and professed a great tender dedication to the destitute, serving them the same way Jesus did.
Teach us to imitate your greatest virtues, so that we, following your example.

Suffering
We do not like to suffer. That’s obvious.
You can tell by how easily we ignore people who are suffering. And even when we don’t ignore them, we struggle to comfort someone who is suffering.
We do not like to suffer.
You can tell by how bad we are at suffering. How hard we work to avoid suffering. How we don’t like to think about suffering.
Because if we’re not around it, if we don’t think about it, then maybe, just maybe, we won’t have to deal with it.
Maybe we’ve never really put those thoughts together. But from the way we live our lives, that’s what we look like.
Which – if you think about it – is a stupid way to live. Kind of like not putting a roof on your house, even though you live in a place where it rains. A lot.
Because one thing is certain about life in our fallen world – no matter how good or bad we are, we will suffer. There’s no escaping it.
But we do have a choice. You and I get to choose who we suffer with.
We can suffer alone. And we all know how well that works.
Or we can suffer with God. We can invite God into our suffering. We can ask God to be with us, right in the heart of it.
It’s only when we refuse to suffer alone – when we ask God to be with us in our suffering, to see us through our suffering – not waiting for some perfect moment, after we’re cured, after the relationship has been healed, after we’re in recovery, after we’ve got a job, after the storm has passed – but right now, right in the middle of it.
It’s only when we invite God into our suffering that we will experience God’s grace right in the middle of the storm.
When we invite God into our suffering, as St. Rose of Lima (today’s saint) puts it, then “with suffering comes the gift of grace.”
Not because we want to suffer. But because we know we can’t avoid it. And because we’re too smart to do it alone.
When we do it with God – not just day by day, but hour by hour and even minute by minute – that’s where the grace comes in.
Not just the grace to endure. But the grace to live in God’s peace, even in the middle of the storm.
