Deepest respect for nerve softwares work even if their ports end up with issues
Glad their name has been immortalised with Squibbons & TheCastle's work on no rest for the living. Its not the newest or the flashiest official release anymore but itll always be special to me
I really wish s & tc were in the doom community proper, their work is excellent

This immediately made me think of the tropical forest octopus from The Future is Wild (2002).
Like even at the time I questioned the biological logic of this terrestrial squid creature.
There was also the arboreal monstrosity of the Squibbon which was differently baffling:

I'm still not 100% sure how this show got created how how they came to the conclusions they did on what would survive and evolve and how.
Okay gang, we need to figure out a way to make this happen. We need to change octopus culture and get them to raise their kids better.
Source.
#not me having flashback to that speculative documentary series I was obsessed with#where they kept leaping forward chunks of time into a world post-humans#and there were arboreal octopus#The Future is Wild#Truly a show that should not have had such a formative experience on me and yet...#Having just found a clip of it to make sure I wasn't hallucinating the memory of it the cgi was so much worse then I remembered.#2002: we really did just accept that things looked like that and just had our brains add the detail huh.

Tree Octopus
Image © Lyle Zapato, accessed at ZPI here
[ @glarnboudin reminded me about the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus in conversation, and encouraged me to consider it a separate creature from the squibbon (which I’ll stat up whenever I get around to doing a Speculative Evolution block). If you haven’t seen the website (linked above), I highly recommend it, both as a very straight faced hoax and for its delightfully web 1.0 layout. The site has been used by media literacy groups to teach school kids about trusting internet resources, making it a hoax with an overall positive impact on the world.
My statistics hew very closely to the Pathfinder 1e octopus, with a few changes based on the environment. The one major difference is with the Charisma score. Pathfinder’s octopus have a Charisma of 3, which is wild considering how inquisitive, interactive and full of personality many octopus are. Sure, they’re not social animals in the wild for the most part, but they clearly have something approaching a sense of self.]
Tree Octopus CR 1 N Animal This brown, spotted animal has eight sucker-covered arms, wide staring eyes, and a bulbous body.
The tree octopus is a reclusive relative of ordinary octopus, adapted for life in the moist temperate rainforests. They are arboreal carnivores, hunting frogs, small mammals and birds, and feeding on eggs and insects as they come across them. Tree octopuses are inquisitive and curious, and may pick up shiny or intricately textured objects, stashing them in their nests to examine and play with. They are hunted by larger predators such as owls, eagles and mountain lions, and sasquatches find them to be delicious, if rare, treats.
Tree octopuses leave larger creatures, including humanoids, alone unless they are attacked. They can fight back with a venomous nip, causing swelling and muscle aches, as well as by shooting sticky ink in a blinding jet. Once a larger attacker is blinded and in pain, the tree octopus retreats, changing color and squeezing itself into a hollow tree or under a rock to hide.
The reproductive cycle of tree octopus is tied to water. They are solitary for most of their lives, but come down to rivers and lakes in order to mate and lay eggs. Males leave the female to guard the eggs, which she does at the cost of her own life. Juvenile tree octopus remain in the water for a month or so after hatching before instinctively crawling ashore and climbing into the trees.
Tree Octopuses as Animal Companions Use the statistics of a regular octopus animal companion for a tree octopus, except that it has a climb speed instead of a swim speed and no jet speed. It gains the ink blot attack instead of the ink cloud special quality, and gains hold breath as a special quality.
Tree Octopus CR 1 XP 400 N Small animal Init +3; Senses low-light vision; Perception +1 Defense AC 15, touch 14, flat-footed 12 (+3 Dex, +1 natural, +1 size) hp 13 (2d8+4) Fort +5, Ref +6, Will +1 Offense Speed 20 ft., climb 30 ft. Melee bite +3 (1d3+1 plus poison), tentacles +1 (grab) Ranged ink blot +5 (blindness) Statistics Str 12, Dex 17, Con 14, Int 2, Wis 13, Cha 13 Base Atk +1; CMB +1 (+5 grapple); CMD 14 (can't be tripped) Feats Athletic, MultiattackB Skills Climb +11, Escape Artist +13, Stealth +20, Swim +7; Racial Modifiers +10 Escape Artist, +8 Stealth, +4 Swim SQ hold breath Ecology Environment temperate forests Organization solitary Treasure incidental Special Abilities Ink Blot (Ex) A tree octopus can shoot ink once every minute. Treat this as a ranged touch attack with a range of 30 feet and no range increment. A creature struck must succeed a DC 14 Reflex save or be blinded for 1d4 rounds. Washing the ink away with at least a gallon of water ends the blindness early. The save DC is Dexterity based. Poison (Ex) Bite—injury; save Fort DC 13; frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 1 Str; cure 1 save.

Wait there are Social Spiders RIGHT NOW?! I thought those were just a fun speculative biology idea for The Future Is Wild
Yeah, there’s like a whole wikipedia page about them and everything!
That said, I really loved The Future Is Wild. Thank you for reminding me about it. I really love squibbons. Squid gibbons.

Haven’t put up a new music track from the game in a hot minute, so here’s this one. This track plays when your team goes through the Mushroom Forest, a small in the early-to-mid game. The forest is notable for being made up of, well, you guessed it gamers, Mushrooms, but also for being inhabited by strange beings called Squibbons. What are Squibbons? You’ll have to play Trash Planet to find out.
In case you’re new here, TRASH PLANET is a dark comedy / satire indie RPG about the horrors of human progress. It’s also funny and won’t make you cry too much. Please follow my blog as it gives me more Gamer Strength in order to make it through making the game all by myself.
