Don't look down
For some things, there is no rational explanation, there is no happy ending.
Opened on the 14th March 1998, the world was introduced to secret weapon 4- Oblivion. Placed in the X-sector part of the park next to the then Black Hole (now The Smiler) the B&M manufactured coaster would be yet another first for the park (and the world) and be the world's first Vertical drop roller coaster, or so they said.
There is reasoning behind the coaster not being entirely vertical, and that's the wheels. They're not spring loaded, so if the ride did actually drop at 90° like advertised, it would eventually wear down over time and become unsafe to ride and eventually need to close, leaving a massive hole in the park. And I don't just mean a metaphorical hole, like if you lost your favourite teddy bear, I mean an actual 115 foot hole going straight down. The ride is still called the world's first vertical drop coaster in the videos around the queue line, and on posters around the ride site, even if it stands at 87.5°.
In the season of 1997, a singular security guard patrolled the construction area that would be Oblivion. He wouldn't tell guests anything about the new ride to keep them in the dark, he'd also instruct them to leave the area. This hyped up theme park goers and people speculated what this ride would be and what it would be about.
During the queue, guests are treated to different videos, preparing them for the things to come. The sinister man narrating these clips was known as The Lord of Darkness, he'd reassure you that the Oblivion was perfectly safe, and designed for your comfort and enjoyment, whilst also explaining the (entirely fictitious) side effects of riding this ride. Some of these clips had to be taken out after The Smiler crash, but many of them still remain today. Before 2004, before the drop, the ride featured the slogan “Don't look down” but, due to noise complaints from neighbours (and an attempt to sue) Alton Towers had to remove the sound.
With or without the sound, and extra theming, Oblivion makes for a thrilling ride and is most definitely a must do for any visit.

All about sewing tools
Tumblr media
Sewing Tools for Professional Results As with any profession or hobby, using the right tools can make all the difference in the world and can make the difference between amateur or professional results. Even if you’ve only sewn a few projects and collected some basic sewing tools, it may be time to learn about some of the advanced sewing tools designed to give your project that professional edge. Most sewing projects can be completed without the following tools, but as you improve and fine-tune your skills and develop an affinity for quilting, home decorating or clothing construction, you’ll find these tools indispensable for saving time, increasing accuracy and simplifying tasks Cutting Tools Needlework Scissors and Snips Small, 3"- to 5"-long needlework scissors or snips are indispensable for clipping close to the stitching line or trimming intricate areas of a project. They can be used wherever your large bent-handled shears can’t reach. Snips have spring-loaded handles. Keep a pair alongside the sewing machine, at-theready to cut stray threads. Rotary Cutter Used with a self-healing mat and a clear plastic ruler, rotary cutters are ideal for straight cuts in one or more fabric layers. Look for blades that can be easily removed and replaced and a handle that is comfortable. Rotary mats and rulers are made specifically for rotary-blade cutting, and the materials don’t dull rotary blades as other products might. Both the mat and the ruler feature gridlines and angles for cutting accuracy. See more about: rotary cutters Measuring & Altering Tools Grid Board Use a large grid board under the fabric and pattern to align the fabric grain while pinning and cutting. A padded grid board allows you to pin into it when stretching or blocking fabric. Some have ironing surfaces that are also helpful for fusing large fabric sections. Consider a rotating grid board if your space is limited. Mats and wide rulers used for rotary cutting are actually modified grid boards used both underneath and on top of the fabric. See “Rotary Cutter” above. French Curve or Fashion Ruler These rulers have a variety of curves to mimic the body’s curves and are used when altering patterns. It’s helpful for the simplest length adjustment and indispensable when actually changing the style of a garment. Depending on how you turn the ruler and what segment you use, one ruler gives you all the curves necessary to complete pattern lines when altering or drafting patterns. Marking Tools FabricMarking Pens The space-age chemicals used to make these clever pens become more high-tech every day. The disappearing ink allows you to mark most projects at the exact location needed—even on the fabric right side— without fear of staining or discoloration. Look for an ink color that is in high contrast to your fabric, and for accuracy select a fine tip. Choose a water-soluble pen for long-term projects, when you want the markings to remain until you remove them with water. Air-soluble pen inks disappear within a few hours and are ideal for fabrics that can’t be washed or dampened. Some air- and water-soluble pen manufacturers caution against exposing marked fabrics to sunlight or the heat of the iron because heat may set the ink permanently. Always test the pen on a scrap of the fabric before using it on your project. Pressing Tools Tailor’s Ham Resembling a ham, this pressing tool is used as a base or a mold when pressing curved or shaped seams. It’s available in several sizes and should be covered on one side in cotton and the other in wool. The ham’s curves are designed to mimic garment curves and are used to set the shape of collars, lapels, sleeve caps and more. Point Presser & Pounding Block The raised points of this wooden tool allow you to press deep into a corner without creasing the surrounding fabric. The base is used as a pounding block, or clapper, to flatten seams. Needle Board A flat, flexible board with a bed of short needles placed very close together, a velvet board or needle board is used for pressing napped fabrics, such as velvet and corduroy, without crushing the fabric’s pile. A lessexpensive, and less-effective, version of a needle board features a canvas backed fabric with a raised pile front that takes the place of the needles. Sewing Tools SewingMachine Needles Sewing needles are designed for the type of fabric, thread and stitches you’re using. Using the right size and type of needle will greatly improve your sewing success. For more information on choosing the best needle for your project . Tip: A stitching problem, such as skipped stitches or looping or shredding threads, at firstmay appear to be a problemwith themachine when actually it’s a call for a new or better-suited needle. Bodkin Used for drawing elastic, cord or ribbon through a fabric casing, bodkins are available in several different styles. The pincer is usually the shortest with teeth at one end designed to clamp down firmly on ribbon or elastic and pull it through a tubular casing. Longer versions have a safety pin style closure at one end, and the slimmest version, designed like a large sewing needle, has a large eye for feeding narrow cord in narrow casings. A bodkin’s ball-point end comes in handy for turning fabric tubes right side out. Point Turner A point turner is a hand-held, pointed plastic tool designed to poke into tight corners. For crisp, sharp corners and points, use this tool to push out the corners of collars and cuffs before pressing. The opposite end is flat or rounded; use it to hold open seam allowances while pressing, so you don’t burn your fingers.Basting Tape Much faster than hand basting with needle and thread, use narrow, paper backed basting tape to hold zippers, bias tapes and trims in place while stitching. Fray Preventer A drop of this liquid on the cut edge of a woven fabric will bond the edges and prevent the fabric from raveling. Before using, test the product on a scrap of the actual fabric, or in an inconspicuous area of the project. Allow the test piece to dry thoroughly. Then wash, dry and press it as you would the finished project, to be sure the product doesn’t discolor the fabric. Read the full article

One thing you'll hear firearms nerds say, referring to some little device a character uses to reload a gun, is "it's not a clip, it's a magazine."
I think it's a fairly pedantic nitpick, usually not worth correcting in casual conversation -- but I thought it'd be fun to make a post about it, for people who are actually curious.
Easiest way to tell the difference: If the bullets are exposed and clipped onto/into a piece of metal, that's a clip. If the bullets are completely encased in a box or tube or other shape of container, that's a magazine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The things on the left are clips. The things on the right are magazines.
Why I think it's totally reasonable to get them confused: There's mechanical differences between the two, but from the point of view of the person actually using the firearm, they're the same thing: you put the bullets in the thing, and you put the thing in the gun.
In casual conversation, if someone calls a magazine a "clip," even if it's technically incorrect, everybody still knows what they mean. It's not like people get confused and think they're secretly an M1 Garand in a trench coat or something.
OK but what's the actual difference? Putting this part below a cut because I couldn't find a way to explain it quickly - but I think it's neat!
For starters, a magazine is the part of the gun that holds ammunition, then feeds it into the gun's chamber to be fired. All repeating firearms (any gun that can fire more than once before it needs to be manually reloaded) has some kind of magazine.
Some have internal magazines, which is a permanent "holding area" inside the gun that stores ammo. It usually has some kind of spring inside it that pushes the next round into position after one is fired -- think PEZ dispensers, it's the same concept. Typically you can load an internal magazine manually by pushing ammo cartridges into it one at a time.
This is where clips come in. Clips hold ammo together to make it faster and easier to load an internal magazine - instead of pushing the bullets in one a a time, you can shove them in all at once.
Instead of clips, most modern firearms have detachable magazines. The whole magazine (including the spring mechanism used to feed ammo) is detachable and contained in a convenient little box or tube.
Tumblr media
Magazines (the detachable kind) are a lot more convenient - easier to load, easier to store, and they keep ammo in better condition.
So that's the technical difference: clips hold ammo together to facilitate loading a magazine. Magazines hold ammo, and also feed that ammo into the chamber.
If magazines are more common why does everyone call them "clips?" Most likely because of WWII. Detachable magazines existed but were more expensive and complicated to manufacture, so standard issue rifles for US soldiers were mostly ones that used clips.
Thanks to that, soldiers and everyone else just got used to calling the thing you shove into a gun to reload it a "clip," and it stuck.
What about revolvers? Revolvers are a different animal of a gun (and they predate magazines)!
OK so the chamber is basically the spot at the back of a gun's barrel where a cartridge sits when it's ready to be fired.
Other repeating firearms have a single chamber. After firing, the casing is ejected from the chamber (emptying it out), and the magazine pushes the next round into the chamber.
Revolvers instead use a cylinder that has multiple chambers in it. Each chamber holds one cartridge. After firing, the cylinder turns, moving the used chamber away and putting the next chamber into position behind the barrel.
So revolvers do not have magazines - but I think you could argue that the cylinder serves a similar purpose to one.
Tumblr media
...but interestingly, revolvers can have clips! They're called moon or half-moon clips, designed to hold a full or half cylinder's worth of cartridges to make loading faster.
(Photos via Wikipedia, links to articles with more info sprinkled throughout)
I tried to keep this simple enough to be approachable by people who don't know a whole lot about guns. Polite corrections are welcome, but I'm already aware that there are exceptions and edge cases. I didn't get into those on purpose - thanks!

M45 Chemical-Biological Mask
Adopted in 1996, it was officially developed for rotary-wing aircrew, but U.S. Special Forces had been aiding its development under the table since the program began in the late 1980's.
Here we see a 1998-Dated example made by the original ill-fated contractor, Campbell Plastics Engineering & Manufacturing Inc, outfitted with accessories typical of those seen with 1st SFOD-D at the beginning of the 2000's;
The front voice emitter has a clip-on adapter ring for use with the Audiopack M7A1 Mask Amplifier (not pictured here).
The chemical hood differs from the issued one in that the mask's secondary skin is bonded to it as a single unit, rather than two separate components.
The exhalation valve is an aftermarket upgrade developed by Wilcox Industries. It is spring-loaded and provides exhale resistance so the mask can be more efficiently used with positive pressure filter blowers and tactical SCBA systems.
The whole setup is used with an early Micronel C420 Blower Unit, which supplies a constant flow of fresh air into the mask. An added remote cable allows the operator to switch the back-mounted unit on or off without assistance and the correct wire-reinforced crushproof breathing hose is present as well.

Probably my all-time favorite gas mask design.

Half YF-12 and half SR-71: the story of “The Bastard,” the only SR-71C ever built
By Dario Leone
May 1 2018
SR-71C S/N 61-7981 was nicknamed “The Bastard” since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing
Taken at Hill Air Force Base (AFB) in June 2016, the interesting clip in this post shows SR-71C, “The Bastard” S/N 61-7981, that was the only C model Blackbird ever built and was the last SR-71 to be manufactured. It was nicknamed “The Bastard” since it was a hybrid comprised of the rear fuselage of the first YF-12A (S/N 60-6934) and a functional engineering mockup of an SR-71A forward fuselage built for static testing.
The plane was built to replace the second of the two B model trainers after it crashed on Jan. 11, 1968. The C model made its first flight on Mar. 14, 1969 from the Lockheed plant at Palmdale, California, with Blackbird Chief Project Pilot Robert J. Gilliland at the controls and Lockheed test pilot Steve Belgeau as Reconnaissance Systems Officer. After flight testing it was delivered to the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB, California, on Sep. 3, 1970.
The aircraft made its last flight on Apr. 11, 1976 and was removed from flying status on Jun. 24, 1976 with only 556.4 flight hours, not including the 180.9 hours accumulated on the aircraft as YF-12A S/N 60-6934. It was then processed for long-term storage at the Lockheed plant in Palmdale, California.

Through the intervention of Utah Senator Orrin G. Hatch, Hill Aerospace Museum was assigned the aircraft by the Air Force in April 1990 and immediately began planning its relocation from Beale AFB to Hill AFB.
Representatives from the museum, the Air Force Heritage Foundation of Utah, the 67th Aerial Port Squadron, and the 405th Combat Logistics Support Squadron (CLSS) traveled to California in July 1990 to determine the best way to disassemble, package, and transport the aircraft.
Then a sixteen-member team from the 405th CLSS went to California in August 1990 and broke the aircraft down into three major pieces and assorted smaller components, including a J58 engine and start cart, palletizing them all for transport on a C-5 Galaxy cargo aircraft. However, when the disassembly operation was completed no cargo aircraft was immediately available to transport the pieces back to the base. Everything would have to wait.
In the Spring of 1991 representatives from the 67th Aerial Port Squadron and the 405th CLSS traveled twice to Beale AFB via two large, flat-bed trucks to retrieve most of the palletized components, leaving only the largest pieces that would require transport by cargo aircraft. In August 1991, one year after the disassembly had begun, air transport was finally arranged via a C-5 from Travis AFB.
Once all the pieces were finally on base, the aircraft components were gathered together in a large hangar belonging to the 405th CLSS for reassembly and restoration. Volunteers, Air Force Reservists, and many active-duty personnel were involved in the intricate two-month process of piecing the aircraft back together. On Oct. 16, 1991 the completed aircraft was towed to the museum and placed on display.

I fixed one of the issues I had with my 1908 corset!!! I can now actually close the busk properly aside from the bottom stud not lining up properly with it's tab (and I think that's more of a manufacturing issue where it fit okay-ish but stopped working as soon as fabric was added to the equation)
if I make it again I'll use either a busk with taller studs or just accept that I'll need to use a thinner material for the fashion fabric, also add a tiny bit to the side bottom for my frankly silly amount of hip spring
The last few things I need to do is to add the garter clips and a little bit of lace on the top just to pretty it up a little. And I guess finish the corset cover I started.
EDIT: okay so to make the bottom stud line up I just need to start closing the corset at the bottom instead of the top cool

How Many Items Are in a Physics Kit?
Tumblr media
Physics Kit is a vital educational device provided by Physics Kit manufacturer and supplier in Africa. The Physics Kit is acquired in different tools and instruments that allow actual training to materialize those abstract concepts of Physics. These topics include motion, electricity, magnetism, and optics, and they clearly help an individual to learn how theory is applied in real-world situations. The items of Physics Kits are all directed toward the fundamental principles of physics that can facilitate understanding in all ways. Thus, they help to improve STEM education in African schools and institutions. In this blog, we mentioned the essential items that are inside of a physics kit.
Items in a Physics Kit
Physics kits have been designed for students, these tend to direct the students' endeavors to experience and explore the core scientific aspects by carrying out experiments.
Spring Balance
The force is measured in newtons through a spring balance, which lies right at the vision of gravitational force. This further causes students to understand the relationship between force, and mass could enable them to do more on concepts that talk about tension, weight, and Hooke's Law. This permits practice and experimentation, to understand forces acting on objects.
Inclined Plane
The inclined planes have another classic piece of equipment that helps in the understanding of the angles and forces on any object. Many things can be demonstrated about forces as they change due to friction and normal force by placing the Inclined Plane at different angles. A device like this demonstrates to students the principles behind the mechanical advantages used in simple machines.
Pendulum Setup
This setup consists of a bob suspended from a string or rod, leading students to oscillatory motions. Altering the length of the string or the mass of the bob allows students to study the periodic motion, gravitation acceleration, and factors that affect oscillation. The setup could be used to study concepts like time period and frequency.
Multimeter
The multimeter is a versatile tool, and its electric properties can measure voltages, currents, and resistances. For the understanding of Ohm's Law, how a circuit works, and how all these electrical properties come together, a multimeter is very essential for students. It usually allows students to practically explore the behavior of an electricity component.
Optical Lens Set
An optical lens set will typically have convex and concave lenses, which are essential in illustrating how light refracts and how images are formed. Students actually perform experiments through the use of such lenses. They learn about things such as how light travels through materials, the magnification of lenses, and their focal distance. As a result, they will understand the basic principles and principles of optics and vision.
Magnet and Iron Filings
Magnets and iron clips are used to identify the field patterns of the magnet. There are different possible shapes of magnets and changes that can be seen in arrangements of iron filings. It is an interactive demonstration to help the student to see and feel the basic meaning of magnetism.
Electric Circuit Components
Electric circuit components consist of resistors, switches, batteries, and wires used to build and analyze elementary electrical circuits. The inclusion of those devices makes it effective to study topics such as current flow, resistance, voltage, and power. Students can also examine more about series and parallel circuits by assembling circuits. Electric circuits are crucial in appreciating fundamental electrical technology concepts.

Fasteners are small but indispensable components in countless industries. From holding together intricate machinery to enabling the construction of skyscrapers, fasteners form the backbone of many structures and devices.
What Are Fasteners?
Fasteners are hardware devices designed to mechanically join or affix two or more objects together. Unlike welding or adhesives, fasteners are often removable, making them highly flexible for applications where disassembly or adjustment is required. They come in a variety of materials, including steel, aluminum, plastic, and titanium, catering to specific needs based on strength, corrosion resistance, or weight.
Types of Fasteners
There is a vast array of fasteners, each suited for different purposes. Here are some of the most common types:
1. Bolts and Screws
Bolts and screws are threaded fasteners, with bolts usually requiring a nut for tightening, while screws are typically self-threading into a material. They are widely used in construction, automotive, and machinery applications.
2. Nuts
Nuts are paired with bolts to secure objects. They come in various shapes and sizes, such as hex nuts, wing nuts, and lock nuts, each serving unique purposes.
3. Washers
Washers are thin plates with a hole in the center, placed between the nut and the material to distribute load and prevent damage. They can also help reduce vibration and leakage.
4. Rivets
Rivets are permanent fasteners that are deformed after installation to hold materials together. They’re commonly used in the aerospace and automotive industries for their strength and reliability.
5. Anchors
Anchors are used to affix objects to materials like concrete or drywall. Types include expansion anchors, toggle bolts, and sleeve anchors.

Pt. 1. Parts of a Handgun and Common Terms
Welcome back! In this essay we’ll go over the parts of a handgun and some of the most common terms that get used when discussing firearms. If you run across terms you don’t recognize, here or out in the world at large, feel free to ask and I’ll explain as best I can. I’ll also update this post with any terms people ask about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The author is neither a photographer nor a graphic designer. If someone has a public license diagram they would like to share that would be great.
A Shibboleth is a word or phrase that can be used to tell members of a group from outsiders. Some terms used in relation to firearms are shibboleths. They are underlined here.
Pistol – A Semi-automatic handgun. Is frequently used to refer to any handgun.
Revolver – A handgun which uses a rotating cylinder rather than a detachable magazine; think six-shooter.
Magazine– A spring loaded box which feeds ammunition into the gun.
Clip – A piece of sheet metal which holds the back of several rounds of ammunition. Used to load magazines. Importantly, you cannot use a clip in any modern handgun of which the author is aware. This is a major shibboleth.
Caliber – the diameter of bullet a gun shoots. For example, a 9mm handgun shoots a projectile which is 9mm across. A handgun labeled .45 ACP shoots a projectile .45 inches across. This gets more complicated, as most calibers have several names. For example, 9mm is also known as 9x19, 9mm Luger, and 9mm Parabellum. But .38 S&W is not the same as 38 Special. We’re all just as confused as you, trust me. Your best bet is your search engine of choice. (Chat GPT will get you killed)
Bullet – The portion of the cartridge which is actually launched from the firearm.
Cartridge – The combination of casing, primer, powder, and bullet. A round of ammunition.
Action type – When talking about handguns this refers to the number of actions the trigger performs. For example, in a single action (SA) handgun all the trigger does is drop the hammer. In a double action (DA) handgun the trigger first pulls the hammer back, and then drops it. In striker fired (SF) handguns the trigger activates a spring loaded striker inside the gun.
Semi-auto – Sometimes referred to as auto-loading, semi-automatic, or automatic. A firearm which fires one round per action of the trigger. You pull the trigger once, one projectile comes out the end of the gun. Not to be confused with fully-automatic.
Fully-automatic – A firearm which shoots more than one shot by a single function of the trigger. You pull the trigger once and more than one projectile comes out the end of the gun. Also known as a machine gun.
AR-15 – Armalite Model 15. Not assault rifle 15. The AR-17 isn’t even a rifle. This is a major shibboleth.
Glock/Sig/Taurus/Canik/Springfield – Brands of firearm manufacturer.
FMJ – Full metal jacket. The lead bullet has a copper jacket around it to limit the amount of airborne lead and to make cleaning easier. Mostly used as practice ammo.
JHP – Jacketed hollow point. The bullet has a hollow in the tip which causes it to expand when it hits something and expend its energy faster. This is used for hunting and self defense. Full metal jacket rounds will sometimes go all the way through bad guys and hit other people. Hollow points help prevent that.
Gr. – Grains. A unit of measurement equal to 0.06479891 grams. A 115 gr. Bullet weighs 115 grains, or about 7.45 grams.

Mueller Electric Company Building (Mueller Lofts Apartments)
1587 E. 31st St.
Cleveland, OH
The Mueller Electric Company Building is located at 1587 East 31st Street in Cleveland, Ohio. The two-story Commercial-style building was designed by The George S. Rider Co. The central section was originally erected in 1922, and consisted of steel post-and-beam and red brick building. It was 63 feet deep and 94 feet long (five bays wide). A 1925 addition added a second story to the one-story manufacturing space at the rear and to the south. A one-story addition was added to the north side of the building in 1936. A second story was added to the rear and a three-car garage against the south addition in 1946. A wrap-around one-story addition was added in 1956, and a story added to this in 1962. Another two-story addition was made to the north end in 1964, and second stories to the 1956 and 1962 southern portions in 1972. A final two-story addition was made to the north end in 1976. The interior space reflects an open industrial plan, with painted masonry walls and exposed structure.
Ralph S. Mueller invented the alligator clip, a spring-loaded metal clip with jaws resembling alligator's mouth and teeth. As markets for electricity expanded in the 1930s so did the applications for use of alligator clips, beginning with telephone line testing, then automobile starters; ham radio operation; jumper cables; televisions; toys; household appliances; grounding to drain static from auto tank trucks; airplanes; during surgeries using anesthetic; military ships to avoid magnetic mine detection; electric fences; space satellites and more. The assembly department was run by 48 women who could assemble over 85,000 clips per day. Today, the alligator clip is an indispensable and commonly used device in the testing and repair of electronics and charging of batteries and electronics.
The 1922 Mueller Electric Building was one of the last neighborhood-scale factories. The Mueller Electric company manufactured the iconic “Alligator Clip” that is still used in jumper cables and electronics worldwide. The simple and ingenious alligator clip became a success with broad application, built on the rise of electric power, Cleveland as a manufacturing center, and the talents of Ralph S. Mueller, known as the “Skipper of the Clipper.” In 2011, long after its heyday from 1950s to the 1970s, the company was sold to the Desco Corporation in Akron, Ohio where it continued to operate as the Mueller Electric Company. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 2016. Mueller Lofts is the historic restoration of the 1922 Mueller Electric Building from an electric parts factory into 51 modern apartments with character of every size in the heart of Cleveland's AsiaTown.
