"A tribal-led nonprofit is creating a network of native bison ranchers that are restoring ecosystems on the Great Plains, restoring native ranchers’ connections with their ancestral land, and restoring the native diet that their ancestors relied on.

Called the Tanka Fund, they coordinate donors and partners to help ranchers secure grazing land access, funds needed to install and repair fencing, increase their herd sizes, and access markets for bison meat across the country.

That’s the human part of the story. But as Dawn Sherman, executive director of the Tanka Fund, told Native Sun News, they’re “buffalo people” and these four-legged, 2,000 lbs. “cousins” are equal-part-protagonists.

The return of the bison means the return of the prairie, one of the three great grassland ecosystems on the planet, of which just 1% remains as it was when the Mayflower arrived.

“Bringing buffalo back to their ancestral homelands is essential to restoring the ecosystem. We know that the buffalo is a keystone species,” said Dawn Sherman, a member of the Lakota, Delaware, Shawnee, and Cree.

“Bringing the buffalo back to the land and to our people, helps restore the ecosystem and everything it supports from the animals to the plants to the people. It’s come full circle. That’s how we see it.”

As Sherman and the Tanka Fund help native ranchers grow their operations, everyone is well aware of the power of the bison to transform the environment: just as nations across Europe are, who are reintroducing wood bison to various ecosystems, for all the same reasons.

Sherman points out the variety of ways in which buffalo anchor the prairie ecosystem. The almost-extinct black-footed ferret, she points out, lived symbiotically with the bison, and with the latter gone, the former followed—nearly.

The long-billed curlew uses bison dung as a disguise to hide nests from predators. Deer, pronghorn antelope, and elk all rely on bison to plow through deep snows and uncover the grasses that these smaller animals can’t reach.

Everywhere the bison hurls its massive body, life springs in the beast’s wake. When bison roll about on the plains, it creates depressions known as wallows. These fill with rainwater and create enormous puddles where amphibians and insects thrive and reproduce. Certain plants evolved to grow in the wet conditions of the wallows which Native Americans harvested for food and medicine.

Native plants evolved under the trampling hooves of millions of bison, and that constant tamping down of the Earth is a key necessity in the spreading of native wildflower seed.

Indeed, Sherman says some of these native ranchers are bringing bison onto lands still visibly affected by the Dust Bowl, and already the animals are acting like a giant wooly cure-all for the land’s ills.

Since 2020, the Tanka Fund, in partnership with the Inter-Tribal Buffalo Council and the Nature Conservancy, has overseen the transfer of 2,300 bison from Nature Conservancy reserves to lands managed by ranchers within the Tanka Fund network.

“[T]he more animals that we can get the more of that prairie we can restore,” said Sherman. “We can help restore the land that has been plowed and has been leased out to cattle ranchers.”"

The wolf has been a powerful symbol throughout all of mythology, whether we reference Fenris Wolf who was set to devour the world during Ragnarok, or Romulus and Remus who were raised by wolves to create the foundation of the Roman Empire, the most powerful empire of all time. They have been the subject of powerfully moving art, the once popular and now embarrassing three-wolf moon shirt, and more song themes than one can shake a proverbial stick at.

Part time monstrous, part time noble, no other animal has been quite as controversial as the Wolf, but one thing remains constant throughout. Wolves are regularly shown as howling at the moon, and Howl at the Moon day is your opportunity to join them in their celebration of the wild.

History of Howl at the Moon Day

In many parts of the world Wolves are seen as pest animals, harassing livestock and endangering pets, this has led to severe over-hunting and recovery efforts can get costly. Wolves are wonderful and majestic animals, and are a vital part of the world’s ecology. Howl at the Moon Day was organized to help educate people on them, and to help organizations like Wolf Haven generate funds and get the word out on Wolf Conservation.

How to Celebrate Howl at the Moon Day

You can keep things literal in your Howl at the Moon Day celebrations, and merely take a step outside and give the celestial orb in the sky a great big howling hello. You can get groups of friends together and head out to the forests and build a bonfire under a dark autumn night, and how to the crisp and clear skies overhead and the moon that hangs there like a giant eye watching over the world at large.

It’s life – a new kind of life. Open your eyes, Dean. See what I see. Feel what I feel. And let’s go take a howl at that moon.

For the more altruistically minded, you can gather up plans to put together a fund-raising event for your local wolf conservatory.

On a more metaphorical note, Howling the Moon can represent breaking free of the traditional and standard, to stare into the dark night and away from the sane light of convention and civilization. Howl at the Moon night can be your opportunity to just cut free, do something wild and unexpected, and just let the wild in you out for an evening.

Lake Aiken is located in the northwestern part of China, in the Qinghai Autonomous Region. It is one of the deepest and most beautiful lakes in the world. Its depth reaches 230 meters, which makes it one of the deepest lakes in China.

Aiken in Mongolian means terrible. And indeed, the appearance of this area is terrible, similar to ideas about hell and sulfur. In the center of the source is boiling, bubbling water. It's that time again, pokeshippers!

Last year, we announced that the format of Pokeshipping Week - one theme per day - was getting retired. We also said that we'd still put on a celebration of some kind going forward. Well, the time is here, and I'm happy to announce that we are planning a pokeshipping zine...next year!

If you'll forgive the bait-and-switch there, we have seriously talked about doing a zine, but time got away from us this summer. So, while we do hope to tackle that undertaking in 2025, for this year, we're planning what you might call an open Pokeshipping Week!

How does it work, you ask? Simple: over the years, you all have submitted a lot of potential themes for Pokeshipping Week. For every seven that got chosen each year, plenty were left behind. Well, now you can fill November 1 to 7 with art, fics, AMVs, GIFs, graphics, etc., all about our favorite Poke-couple, using any seven you'd like from the unused themes list.

Any and all contributions are welcome, and if they're tagged #pokeshipping week 2024, we'll reblog them here and on the main @pokeshipping blog. She liked animals and particularly cats. She retweeted tons of photos of Pallas's Cats, and also some of deer, tigers and bobcats. She wished Cave Lions (extinct) still existed. She did not like Hyenas though, she described them as "literally so worthless".

She liked nature and flowers.

She hated when things are disorganized and would clean frequently.

She was a virgin and said she was waiting until marriage. She seemed to be anti-sex, she called someone "vile" for having had four partners and said people who "sleep with others for fun" should be in a mental hospital.

She hated couples, and complained frequently about seeing them in public.

She liked Trump, she did not like Biden or Harris.

She made racist, antisemitic, homophobic, and fat phobic tweets.

She frequently posted about being alone, lonely, suicidal, and homicidal. When she wished harm on others, she was usually specific with her threats such as my personal favorite "I hope you get eaten alive like a fucking deer".

She thought cutting was "boring" but she once got "incellington" to cut himself for her.

She didn't do drugs and seemed to be anti-drug, she said it was better to be dead than smoke weed.

She was into Adam Lanza, she said "Sandy Hook truth finder and writer" was "like her second job", but she said she hated people who were obsessed with him so I guess she did not consider herself obsessed?

She liked Jeffrey Dahmer, and she created a Spotify playlist themed around him on September 30th, 2022 shortly after the Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was released so she probably watched it. This is the earliest true crime connection I have found.

She had family in Finland who she wanted to visit. She wanted to leave Wisconsin.
