The Boys in the Boat (2023)
A 1930s-set story centered on the University of Washington's rowing team, from their Depression-era beginnings to winning gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
A really uplifting and feel good sports drama set in the 1930s. It is predictable but yet still very enjoyable. I really enjoyed it. This is also an excellent movie that you can watch with the whole family.
P.S. I think Callum Turner should throw in his name into the "next Bond" ring. I think he has the potential to make an excellent Bond.

Challengers
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2024
Challengers (2024, USA)
Director: Luca Guadagnino
Writer: Justin Kuritzkes
Mini-review:
It's always nice when a movie lives up to the hype, and Challengers actually surpasses expectations. No matter what you expect going in, it will manage to surprise you in one way or another. It's true I'm not a huge fan of sports films, but I can tell you I had never seen one like this. Luca Guadagnino breathes new life into this genre with his masterful, awe-inspiring directing, also aided by Justin Kuritzkes' brilliant screenplay. And the whole thing is elevated to an even higher level thanks to three career-defining performances from Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist, whose chemistry makes these characters very believable. The cherry on top is Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' stunning score, which makes the pace so propulsive. So, yeah, believe all the amazing stuff you've read about this movie. It's the real deal.

How successful would Adonis “Donnie” Creed…
Tumblr media
Propaganda for the mic skills:
He’s already a trash talker and he can hype up crowds. He’s also the son of Apollo Creed, it’s in his family genes to be a crowd pleaser. Plus, it’s Michael b. Jordan, the man’s got natural charisma.
/
/
/
Propaganda for the wrestling skills:
He’s already a boxer. It’s not wrestling, but I think he could make the transition to pro-wrestling if he wanted.

Pretty good story, it’s excellent for a biography. In the end, it took family to save Kevin from the family curse. Must Watch if you are into pro wrestling or biographies.
The Iron Claw is a 2023 biographical sports drama film written and directed by Sean Durkin. Based on the life of professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich and the Von Erich family, the film stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Holt McCallany, and Lily James.

Sad that one of my new favorite Netflix series has like NO following on Tumblr because it's freaking amazing.
Big strong chubby men being badasses and trying to become the best in their sport! A hilarious main character who refuses to take bullshit and learns to turn his hard-headedness from a weakness into a strength. Bare man booties all the time. Big soft tummies hiding layers of muscle. A great soundtrack. Compelling storylines.
Please watch it because I need them to make another season. 😭

barely three days in and team Italy has already amassed 5+ cases of beef with referees/judges and especially The People are incensed and crying corruption and unfairness - might we seen an updated version of "schiatta moreno" soon i wonder? "Schiatta giudice olimpico" or something

If any of yall are interested in general hobby drama, figure skating is the only interest I have where being judgemental as hell is required - it's a judged sport, after all. And also strictly gender-normy past the point where my Catholic-raised ass EVER found it comfortable. This is pretty minor drama, too, but I am connecting some dots here, so have a little writeup. As a treat.
The figure skating international regulating body (the ISU) released this upcoming season's point value scales (i.e. the base point values each of the elements in a skating program are worth, such as jumps and spins and step sequences). For the first time ever, they are including point values and rules for quintuple jumps (5 revolutions. Absolutely unnecessary and uncalled for. I still barely support the existence of quads! *old man yells at cloud*)
No one has ever done a quint, to be fair, but given that one particular asshole-ish* 19 year old skater has been landing quad axels routinely and with ease for a while now, and has been saying that he's working on quints (also that gay men are routinely scored higher than straight men, and that's *obviously* why he has trouble winning events... 👀), here goes, I guess
This follows the ISU decision earlier this summer to allow backflips in competition, after a men's world medalist decided last season to do one in his program anyway and just eat the point deduction. They were banned because they are dangerous AF if done even remotely incorrectly (and also - arguably - so they could discriminate against a black female skater in the early 90s who did them fantastically), and now many people are worried that allowing the backflip will cause younger skaters to try to do them in order to get more points, and potentially hurt themselves in the process
the ISU's entire modus operandi for the past decade or more has been "Let's try everything we can to make this incredibly elitist sport popular again! Besides actually punishing people who cheat. Or fixing abuse issues within the culture as a whole. Or supporting skaters who don't want to perform to strict gender normative standards." Currently it seems they're following this approach by specifically setting up rules so.specific current top athletes can break records or otherwise make headlines (headlines = people outside the tiny, tiny fanbase might hear about it and start watching)
So we'll see how this goes. Ultimately I need to stop watching this sport, it's uncomfortable as hell to watch sometimes and, even if certain systemic issues in the sport are slowly getting better, the genderedness of everything really is not
*I do feel a *little* unfair calling Ilia an asshole, I do think he's more just a cocky teenager with some growing up to do, as he's had some very genuine moments and does seem to be improving. But they should really be paying someone to forcibly shut Ilia's mouth sometimes, goddamn

Recently Viewed: The First Slam Dunk
This one was kind of a cheat. The Japan Cuts screening of The First Slam Dunk sold out almost immediately after tickets became available to the public. That’s hardly surprising: it’s an adaptation of a beloved manga series, the popularity of which rivals Dragon Ball both in its native country and abroad. Fortunately, the venerable GKIDS had already acquired the foreign distribution rights, so I was able to catch it at AMC tonight. I’ll just pretend that I saw it at the festival…
Tumblr media
Regardless of the venue, the film is a spectacular sports drama, depicting basketball with an immersive intensity reminiscent of Raging Bull’s approach to boxing. The animation, which borders on naturalistic without sacrificing the exaggerated expressionism that makes cartoons so universally appealing, emphasizes such minute details as glistening beads of sweat, the folds and wrinkles in the fabric of the uniforms, and the rough texture of the ball—tactile sensations that make the audience participants in the action, rather than passive observers. The conflict isn’t merely physical, however; through editing, voiceover narration, and a nonlinear narrative structure that offers brief glimpses of the characters’ backstories and motivations, director Takehiko Inoue delves into the psychology of the game. Slow-motion, for example, extends crucial seconds to excruciatingly tense minutes. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the players occasionally move with such speed and desperation that they appear to outrun color, sound, and even the very medium, literally unraveling into sketchy line art.
In terms of its plot, The First Slam Dunk is a fairly traditional underdog story—and that familiarity doesn’t diminish its quality in the slightest. Deliciously suspenseful, emotionally engrossing, and inherently cinematic, the movie is a triumph of style and substance; it deserves every bit of the critical acclaim and commercial success that it’s earned.

ok so i've been getting into watching aamir khan movies lately (thanks 3 Idiots for ripping my heart apart and also reminding me why the soundtrack for that movie was my childhood and also starting this obsession) and just watched Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. And likeeeee WHY WAS IT ACTUALLY SO GOOD???? sure, he was kind of an asshole at times and they could have made Pooja Bedi's character less shallow but like the chemistry between Aamir Khan's friend group was so. good. Especially between him and Anjali, even though he basically used her for a while which was a real dick move.
Also, can I just say, I LOVED Anjali's character. Like, she was fun and badass and skipped class and was a female mechanic in 90s India, but still so kind and selfless and good. In conclusion, I'm kind of in love with her
