Some spooky and mysterious book recs for spooky season?
You can look for “October reads,” “spooky reads,” or “horror” on my blog to find more, but here are some recs off the top of my head that I think are especially good for autumn:
The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell
The Whistling by Rebecca Netley
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
Uzumaki by Junji Ito
The Wild Hunt by Emma Seckel
The Seance by John Harwood
Gallant by V.E. Schwab
Slewfoot by Brom
The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
I tend to like gothic horror for this season, so that’s what most of these are, but if you’re looking for anything specific, let me know!
Welcome to my new hyperfixation. The Babylove trilogy by I. S Belle. It's a companion novella trilogy to Zombabe. It's a queer horror set in the early 2000s in a small Maine town called Bulldeen. This specific trilogy is a wlw romance centering a goth named Frankie Tanner and a cheerleader named Ivy Wexler. It's spooky dealing with resurrection, gore.
This resonated so much with me, especially Sugarsnap, which centers a lot on the reality so many queer people face with being in the closet unable to partake in school dances with their crushes/partners. They're short but so brilliantly executed and I am alone in this fandom. So here I am, recommending.
🎃📚👻 Get ready to dive into the spookiest reads of the season! Here are some fang-tastic Halloween book recommendations to send chills down your spine and add a little magic to your All Hallow's Eve. 🦇✨
"The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson: This classic haunted house tale is perfect for those who love a good scare.
"Coraline" by Neil Gaiman: Follow Coraline into a parallel world with eerie button-eyed parents, a black cat, and a spine-tingling adventure.
"Mexican Gothic" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: Dive into this gothic horror novel set in 1950s Mexico with a heroine determined to uncover the terrifying secrets of the haunted mansion.
"The Halloween Tree" by Ray Bradbury: This heartwarming tale takes you on a journey through time and space to discover the origins of Halloween.
"The Witches" by Roald Dahl: A wickedly funny story about real witches with a plan to rid the world of children. Who will stop them?
"The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman: Follow the adventures of a young boy raised by ghosts in a graveyard. It's a perfect blend of eerie and heartwarming.
"Practical Magic" by Alice Hoffman: Witches, spells, and a little dash of romance—perfect for a bewitching Halloween.
"Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury: This creepy carnival tale is full of nostalgia and spine-tingling suspense.
This was suggested to me by a friend last year and it was so addicting to read. Jake Livingston is like any other teen who is trying to survive high school, survive having a crush on the handsome new student, and dealing with his family life- oh, and he can see ghosts.
2. What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
Edgar Allan Poe fans unite! T. Kingfisher has written an expert retelling of Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher with a killer twist. Also, she gives us a character who uses neopronouns, which was very nice!
3. The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury
If you can find the edition illustrated by Gris Grimly, I highly recommend his drawings, but if not, another is fine. The Halloween Tree is such a classic! It speaks to the autumnal joys and youthfulness surrounding Halloween as we travel through space and time with a group of young boys.
4. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
The atmosphere of this book is so eerie and gives you the chills. Two sisters who have come from money live alone outside a town and there is always tension between them and the townspeople, which is only aggravated by the arrival of someone new.
✨ Good afternoon, witches! Most of us are organizing our fall TBRs with witch lit, horror stories, cozy mysteries, and everything in between. Looking for a few recommendations? Save this post and add a few of these amazing books to your TBR!
