thank you so much for this!! i had a lot of fun with it! 🖤
Ghost: dead leaves, pine, cedar, fall air, laurel, balsam, smoke, clove bud, black patchouli, mushroom caps, dampened black soil. he smells like a thick, dense Pacific Northwest forest after a heavy rainfall or a piece of driftwood washed up on the shore — Roja Parfums APEX or Tom Ford Costa Azzurra

QUBE ON BAY, Ultimo
Cuisine: brunch
Sprinkle your appetite with a colourful brunch at this tucked away cafe opposite Broadway shopping centre. Refresh the palate with a vibrant granola bowl, filled with fresh fruits plus the addition of pandan and yuzu curd gave an extra zest of flavour. Continue to cream into the ‘qube benedict’, which is the cafe twist on the traditional - I’m not exactly a fan of eggs benedict as I find it a little too overwhelming in heavy cream but this one was quite tasty. Their use of yuzu instead really helped breakdown the density so it wasn’t too sickening to the stomach.
Mix into a bowl of ‘qube bibim rice bowl’ for a more substantial feed. Expect spicy mouthfuls of this bimbimbap to send a warm sensation to your appetite. Finally sweeten your senses with the matcha french toast. I was a huge fan of the brioche toast as its spongey texture was light and fluffy, reminding me of japanese cheesecake. It was a shame I had missed out on the black sesame edition but the matcha version is definitely one for the fans.
**ratings: 8.7g edibles | 8.7g value | 8.6g service | 8.7g ambience

Stollen $18.50: Dark raisins, cherries, candied Meyer lemon, black mission figs, almond paste, cardamom, dark rum, and orange zest all come together in this heavily powder-sugared loaf. Not your grandmother’s fruit cake!
Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Tart $40: A rich, buttery crust, bourbon chocolate filling, toasted pecans, and edible gold leaf for good luck. Serves 8-12.

Pesto, Olive & Feta Frittata
Pesto, Olive & Feta Frittata
The idea to combine these three powerful flavours came from a lunch I had at Highroad – a fave local cafe.
They served it in the form of poached eggs with pesto, broccolini and dried olive crumbs.
And while that was amazing, I like my frittata better because it feels more substantial and dinnerish.
I’ve baked it in a rectangular pyrex dish because I like how it looks, but you could easily use a round 20cm (8in) springform pan or a 20cm (8in) oven proof frying pan instead.
Ingredients
6 eggs
120 g (4oz) pesto (4 heaped tablespoons) + extra
100 g (3.5oz) feta, crumbled
2 handfuls black olives pitted (100g / 3.5oz)
salad to serve
Instructions
Turn your oven on to 200C (400F). Grease and line a rectangular oven proof dish (mine was 20x25cm / 8x10in dimensions) or a round 20cm (8in) springform pan or a 20cm (8in) oven proof frying pan. If using a non stick pan no need to line it with paper.
Mix eggs and pesto a big pinch of salt in a bowl. Pour egg mixture into your prepared pan. Scatter over olives and feta.
Bake frittata for 15-20 minutes or until the egg is set and the frittata feels firm and springy. Serve hot or at room temp with salad and extra pesto if desired.
WINE MATCH: A spicy Shiraz.
Variations & Substitutions
dairy-free – replace feta with roast walnuts, cashews or other nut. And use dairy-free pesto.
more substantial (carb lovers) – serve with crusty bread or boiled or roast potatoes.
more substantial (low carb) – extra pesto or add roast nuts. Serve with more substantial low carb veg.
herby – a little chopped chives or thyme are lovely with the eggs.
no olives – just skip them or replace with sun dried tomatoes, grilled red peppers, walnuts or extra feta.
different cheese – parmesan, brie, goats cheese, camembert or cheddar.
no pesto – replace with a 250G (9oz) pack of frozen spinach that has been defrosted and squeezed dry.
Waste Avoidance Strategy
eggs – will keep in the fridge for weeks or use for another meal.
pesto – commercial jars of pesto will keep for months in the pantry. Fresh pesto will keep in the fridge for a few weeks. Cover with olive oil to prevent exposure to air and browning reactions.
feta – keeps for months unopened in its packet. Or can be frozen. Or you could make a marinated feta by putting it in a super clean jar from the dishwasher and covering with oil and then keeping it in the fridge. Sometimes I like to add flavourings like bay leaves, lemon zest and pepper corns or chilli.
olives – store in the pantry.
salad leaves – store sealed bag in the fridge. If buying loose leaves, wash and spin dry in a salad spinner then wrap loosely in paper towel and place inside plastic bag. Push out most of the air and seal. Store in the fridge.
Prepare Ahead
You can but I prefer my frittata warm from the oven! Leftovers will keep in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. Don’t freeze.
More Frittata Recipes
Have fun in the kitchen!
With love, Jules x

Pochito, Por Favor, Mascot!
Sandwich and carb lovers, gather round. When I heard that Pochito, the popular Chilean food stall from Ramsgate Markets had opened up their very own eatery in Mascot I put it on the top of my list to visit. There's a range of classic Chilean sandwiches and Chilean empanadas!
Pochito's mother and daughter team Patricia and Paulina Bustamante come from an extended family that all work in the food industry. Paulina says, "My parents and I emigrated to Australia in the late 80's. My mum grew up in Chilean restaurants, delis, and butcher shops. She is the aunty in the family you know when you come over to her house you will get a great feed with food constantly flowing out of the kitchen."
For those of you unfamiliar with Chilean cuisine Paulina explains, "Most people think Chilean food is Mexican food with tamales and burritos and our food is spicy. Our food is actually not spicy and we don't use much chile at all. People may not know Chilean food is all about great produce, we have some of the best seafood!".
Monica and I both share an unabiding love of a sandwich (don't get us started on Liz Lemon and the Sandwich Day episode of 30 Rock) so I knew exactly who to visit Pochito with.
"The sandwich in Chile is part of the nation and part of the culture. If you ever go to Santiago there is a sandwich shop (Sangucheria) along most of the streets. Chileans love their bread, we have several different sorts of bread which we will always have on the table for breakfast, lunch, dinner and 'once' afternoon tea. Sandwiches are the combination of what we love and enjoy, pork/steak, avocado, mayonnaise (a key ingredient in any sandwich and in any Chilean household)," says Paulina.
When I pull up and walk inside I all the patrons appear to be South American which is a good sign (Monica and I are the only non South Americans). It's a small cafe with a few outdoor tables and some indoor share and single tables and ordering is done at the counter.
Pochito means a moment of post prandial bliss where body and mind are in a happy-drowsy state after a satisfying meal. And yes carbs on a cold and windy winter's day help enormously in that regard.
Mote con Huesillo $8
Monica leaves it up to me to order because we share food brains-we both want to eat the same things. We share a Mote con Huesillo drink, one of the drinks I tried and loved in Chile. It's a peach drink scented with cinnamon with barley at the bottom and a whole sun dried poached peach in it. It's not overly sweet which I like and it's fruity. I think this would be delicious both hot and cold-hot would be a little mulled wine-ish.
Traditional beef pino emapanada $6
We've basically ordered one of almost everything on the menu. We start with the empanadas (and a warning: they do sell out quickly because they are popular). The most popular is the beef empanada with a baked pastry and filled with saucy spiced beef mince, onion, olive and egg. It's warming and delicious especially the filling.
Four cheese empanada $5
I have to say I love deep fried empanadas a bit more than the baked one because hello deep fried! These are made using a different pastry and we try the four cheese one (cheddar, mozzarella, parmesan and feta), all gooey deliciousness especially when you add a little hot sauce to it for a bit of kick.
Garlic chilli prawn and cheese empanada $7
The prawn and cheese fried empanada has some garlic and chilli in it as well as tasty, chopped prawn mixture. Next time I'll ask for a bit of pebre (coriander, tomato, onion and garlic salsa) on the side too.
Lomito $12
If the beef empanada is the classic empanada, the lomito is the classic sandwich. So what makes a good lomito? "A good lomito starts with the pork. The pork has to be full of flavour, tender and juicy. There's nothing worst then biting into a dry lomito and having to add condiments like mustard," says Paulina. Indeed, their lomito has the softest melt in the mouth oven roasted pork, smashed avocado, tomato, mayonnaise and pebre on a milk bun it is a perfect mix of meat, salad and bread.
Completo Original $13
There are two completo hot dogs, the original one and an Italian version and we went for the original. The original has a juicy smoked pork frankfurt sausage with sauerkraut, smashed avocado, tomato and mayonnaise. We adore this combination as the sauerkraut and avocado gives the rich sausage a necessary lightness and tang. Paulina explains, "Avocado is life in Chile, and we put it on everything even before the hipsters knew about smashed avo on toast. Avocado is used on most of our sandwiches and even our national hotdog 'El completo'".
Choripan $8
The choripan is a simple but delicious hot dog filled with a grilled South American chorizo and pebre on a long roll. It's tasty but I think out of the three sandwiches we really loved the lomito and the complete original the best because of the salad component.
Barros Jarpa $8
"What do you think that is?" Monica says eyeing the sandwich the woman next to us is eating. After a quick discussion ("Should we get it?" "Yes, we'll take leftovers home to the boys") we head back to the counter to order it along with another sandwich. The soft, warm milk bun is filled with ham off the bone and melted cheese. It's simple but done well and although we've eaten a lot we eagerly finish our quarter portions.
Chemilico $10
We were just going to have a bite of this. And that Dear Reader is how we ended up convincing ourselves to order the Chemilico too. It's lean rump minute steak, plenty of grilled onion, a free range fried egg on a soft milk bun. The beef is very tender and this is such a tasty breakfast sandwich with a runny yolked egg that spurts out the yolk. "That's very suggestive!" I say.
Sopapilla $2 and Sopaipilla Pasada $5
I have so many memories of eating sopapillas aka pumpkin fritters. There's a salty version as well as a sweet version in a citrus sauce. I like both because they remind me of my travels to Chile. The dessert version isn't overly sweet or citrusy but balanced quite nicely.
Calzone rotos $2 and Alfajore $4
It's time for house made sweets and there are two on the counter, a calzone rotos, a biscuit dough that is deep fried with lemon zest. The name means "broken undies" and I guess they are twisted undies. I like the alfajore shortbread sandwich filled with dulce de leche in the centre. It's perfect with a cup of tea.
Tres leches cake $8
The tres leches or three milks cake is a sweet, milk soaked sponge. Although South American sweets can be very sweet, I liked that this wasn't overly sweet. There is a layer of fluffy coconut cream on top, berries and edible flowers.
Before we know it, it's 3pm and it's time for them to close. But then people keep streaming in wanting empanadas and food and they accommodate them. We can see why they got so busy that they didn't have time to go back to the markets.
So tell me Dear Reader, Have you ever tried Chilean food? Do you ever see something that someone else is eating and order it? Are you a sandwich lover?
This meal was independently paid for.

Asian-Style Meatballs with Sweet Chili Sauce
Tasty, tasty, tasty little Asian meatballs with a delectable sweet (and kicky) chili sauce. Serve over brown rice or quinoa for a healthy, easy meal!
Oh man, if you love meatballs. And if you love Asian-style flavors. And if you love simple, quick, healthy dinners. I think you’re going to love this one.
Did you get the little 2-minute survey I sent out in my January newsletter on Friday? I’m loving all your responses so far (if you didn’t see it, you can chime in here)! Judging by the hundreds of responses already, quick and easy 30-minute meals are your jam.
And also cookies, glorious chocolatey soft gooey cookies.
I’m out to fulfill all your 30-minute meal (and cookie) dreams in 2019. Promise. Including posting that new cinnamon roll recipe that clearly I should never have assumed you didn’t want.
While this amazing Asian meatballs recipe isn’t quite in the 30-minute category (looking at right around 40 minutes, so not too terribly bad), it’s a good start to the new year.
It’s fast-ish. It’s super easy. It’s healthy. And wow, those flavors.
You already know I’m a sucker for many an Asian-inspired dish:
Asian Garlic Noodles Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps Dan Dan Noodles Asian Noodle Salad Korean Beef and Rice Roast Pork Tenderloin with Asian Glaze
And these Asian meatballs are right up there with all the other faves. They are delicious!
You can use a variety of ground meat – ground beef, ground pork, ground turkey or a combo. Super adaptable. And while the list of ingredients may seem long, you literally throw all the meatball ingredients together and mash them on up. Same with the sauce, except you’ll whisk instead of mash.
I love serving these meatballs over brown rice or quinoa. For the brown rice, I either make this baked brown rice or this no-fail stovetop version or just throw the brown rice in the instant pot – 1 cup rice to 1 1/4 cups broth and cook on high pressure for 22 minutes.
But the tasty meatballs are delicious served on their own or with a yummy side like this chopped Thai salad. Yum.
Yield: 6-7 servings
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes
Ingredients
Meatballs:
2 pounds ground meat (beef, pork, turkey or a combo - see note)
1 cup panko or regular bread crumbs
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
2 green onions, white and green parts finely chopped
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons soy sauce (I use low-sodium)
1 tablespoon finely minced ginger (or ginger paste)
3 cloves garlic, finely minced or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried basil
Zest from 1 lime (about a teaspoon)
Pinch of crushed red pepper, more or less to taste (optional)
Sauce:
1/3 cup soy sauce (I use low-sodium)
1/3 cup sweet chili sauce (see note)
1/4 cup fresh lime juice (from 2-3 limes)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly spray with cooking spray.
In a large bowl, add the ground meat. Add all the other meatball ingredients and mix until well-combined (I just dig in there with my hands). Roll 2-3 tablespoons of the mixture into meatballs and place 1/2-inch apart or so on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 20-25 minutes until cooked through (an instant-read thermometer should read 165 degrees F in the middle of a meatball).
While the meatballs cook, whisk together all the sauce ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl or small saucepan and heat until simmering.
Using tongs or a spatula, remove the meatballs from the baking sheet onto a plate or tray. Drizzle the cooked meatballs with the warm sauce and garnish with additional green onions and toasted sesame seeds, if desired. Serve the meatballs on their own or over brown rice, white rice, quinoa, etc.
Notes
If you want to change up the flavor a bit, use fish sauce instead of soy sauce in the meatball mixture. I've made these meatballs with a combination of ground pork and ground turkey and another time with 100% ground beef. All versions have been delicious.
Sweet chili sauce is pretty widely available in most grocery stores in the Asian-foods aisle (by the soy sauce). It is sweet and spicy; different brands may differ in flavor and spiciness (Mae Ploy is a popular brand). There are also lots of homemade versions online if you google a recipe.
