VERDICT: never made this recipe before literally just grabbed a chocolate ginger cookies recipe off the Google results. OUTSTANDING.

Moderately time consuming between having to chill the dough and the dipping but results SO indulgent. Unbaked dough had an almost boozy quality in spite of containing no alcohol. Baked for directed 12 minutes and they puffed up and sank exactly as described.

Warmly recommend making these for Ur winter celebration of choice!!

Notes on recipe:

I left the spice quantities alone as it was my first time baking the recipe and I think they're just right but I'm a lightweight. Used black treacle in place of molasses (not typically sold in supermarkets here) which was fine. Recipe recommends good baking chocolate for dipping, i used eating chocolate which was also fine.

Recipe unfortunately doesn't advise on how to set the chocolate without making a mess so here u go:

Put dipped cookies on cooling rack w some parchment paper underneath to catch drips

Wait until chocolate starts to set (I think mine was about 15 mins) and then remove from racks onto parchment to set fully

So I spent more time researching and thinking about it this morning while I'm snowed in at home. Here you go, M9 cocktails.

Includes some non-alcoholic mocktails! (For Jester and Caduceus!)

Caleb – Apple Fireball! For our favorite fiery wizard. It has apple juice, ginger beer (obviously) and fireball whiskey. Based on his favorite dessert – apple tarts. Cinnamon stick garnish! Very spicy and sweet! 1 cup apple juice (optionally heated) 2 oz. fireball whiskey splash of ginger beer cinnamon sticks

Fjord – Classic Dark and Stormy. For our oceanic, seafaring warlock! Rum (Kraken spiced rum, to stay with the sea monster theme) ginger beer, lime and lime garnish. 2 oz. rum 3-4 oz. ginger beer the juice of half a lime lime wedge garnish

Jester – Cotton Candy Mocktail. A sickeningly sweet cocktail for our sweets-loving cleric! Cranberry juice, non-alcoholic blue Curaçao syrup, cotton candy for garnish, along with sprinkles and gummy candies. 2 oz. cranberry juice 1 oz. non-alcoholic blue Curaçao syrup ice cubes splash of lemon juice whipped cream pink or blue cotton candy (for topping) blue and pink sugar and sprinkles for topping blue and pink gummy candies for topping (Shake with whipped cream? and ice cubes, strain - so it looks pale pink and creamy, add toppings and serve chilled, be creative with it! Honestly, this cocktail is a little terrifying, there are so many things, just have fun with it, be messy. If you can't find cotton candy, use more whipped cream as a topping in whichever color you'd prefer.)

Essek – Butterfly Effect. For our time and space wizard. Gin, lemon juice, butterfly pea syrup for the purple color, orgeat syrup, lavender bitters and lavender sprig for garnish. (Lots of variations on this cocktail, so I've combined some things that would work well.) Deep herbal and floral notes. 1½ oz. gin 1 oz. fresh lemon juice .75 oz. butterfly pea syrup .25 oz. orgeat syrup 2 dashes lavender bitters fresh lavender sprig for garnish

Alternately: Whiskey Hot Cocoa, for colder days or for staving off some anxiety. Bourbon, cocoa powder, milk, and some marshmallows for garnish. Very cozy – what’s not to love? 1 cup milk (heated) 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder mix ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 2 oz. melted semi-sweet chocolate 1½ oz. bourbon marshmallows

Veth – Sazerac, for our sharp-shooting rogue. A sharp and very boozy cocktail (fitting) and uses Peychaud’s bitters, whiskey, absinthe or other anise liqueur, lemon for garnish! 1.5 oz. Sazerac rye whiskey 1 sugar cube 3 dashes of Peychaud's bitters ½ teaspoon cold water splash of absinthe lemon for garnish

Beau – Classic Sangria, for our punchy and badass monk! Obviously had to be a wine-based cocktail punch, given Beau’s wine snobbery thanks to growing up on a vineyard. Red wine, brandy, orange juice, sliced and seeded oranges and apples. 1 whole red wine bottle 1 orange, sliced and seeded 1 apple, sliced and seeded ½ cup brandy ½ cup orange juice 2 tablespoons of sugar

Yasha – Flower Drop, for our sweet and strong, flower-loving barbarian. St. Germain elderflower liqueur, vodka, lemon and simple syrup. 1 oz. St. Germain 1½ oz. vodka ¾ oz. fresh lemon juice ½ oz. simple syrup elderflower garnish (optional)

Caduceus – Pink Oolong Highball (non-alcoholic), for our tea-loving grave cleric. Oolong tea, Fever Tree (preferably) sparkling pink grapefruit juice. Simple and flavorful! 6 parts oolong tea (little more than half) 4 parts sparkling pink grapefruit juice (little less than half) serve with ice (optional splash of beet juice for more pinkening)

Molly – Blood Martini, for our favorite, sword-wielding blood-hunter. Citrus vodka, ginger liqueur, dark grape juice, blackberry syrup and blackberries and raspberries for garnish. A lovely purple-red color as well! 1½ oz. citrus vodka 1 oz. ginger liqueur 1 oz. dark grape juice (purple grape juice rather than white grape juice) ½ oz. blackberry syrup blackberries and raspberries for garnish

Smell: I just feel like (when he’d not hunting) he smells clean, ya know? Citrusy and woody, kind of like D&G light blue, with undertones of like a ‘fresh’ scented fabric softener.

Taste: Kind of fruity but tart, like a berry smoothie.  Also just a little bit of like garlic, or mustard.

John

Smell: That man is a smoker, and you can’t tell me otherwise – at least later in life, way after the marines, and losing Mary. He always has a stale smoke smell on his clothes and lips. I recon he uses old spice or similar as an aftershave, so also like cloves/sage.

Taste: Again smoky, ashy, but also oaky and malty like bourbon.

Mary

Smell: Citrusy like Sam but darker, smokier (joke not intended) with hints of like jasmine, bergamot, and a little bit of vanilla. 100% the kind of smell that wraps you up if you come in for a hug.  

Taste: Chocolate, specifically the kinds with nuts and caramel, woman has a sweet tooth.

Castiel

Smell: I feel like all angels smell at least a little like parma violets, or some kind of sweet and subtle floral smell, be especially Cas. On top of that, he’d have like other earthy scentes, like honey,  patchouli, maybe a bit of amber.

Taste: Coffee, always coffee. When human/when he eats; grape jelly, and honey.

Jack

Smell: Like Cas he has the sort of clean, floral scent to him. I also think he would smell of peppermint and like a yankee candle version of warm vanilla. He just has a cosy, familiar smell to him.

Taste: Again I think minty, additionally like white chocolate and rose/flora flavours.

Bobby

Smell: Like old books, burnt candle wicks, motor oils, and nose hair singing whisky.

Taste: More than anyone else on this list (including Crowley) Bobby tastes like whisky. Not the good stiff though, that’s only for special occasions. He taste like Jim Beam and Jack Daniels.

Crowley

Smell: Like a bonfire!!! Smokey, warm, woody, with a hint of burnt sugar.

Taste: 100% Whisky, and dark chocolate.

Charlie

Smell: Charlie smells like she just stepped out of a fantasy book, like wildflowers, and peppercorn. Like strawberry and blackcurrant wine.

Taste: Like a vegan alternative to Nutella, creamy, chocolatey, nutty.

Meg

Smell: Surprisingly soft and clean. Milky, with almond and peach. Just a hint of leather and cedarwood underneath.

Taste: Salty and sweet, anise: like a strawberry liquorice.

Ruby

Smell: Like cedarwood, ginger, and pink pepper. Pleasant but sharp, and strong. Like it pulls you in from across the room.

Taste: Bold and sweet like cabernet sauvignon, starkly contrasted by pepperoni and cheesy pasta.

Lucifer

Smell: Similar to Jack, in that he smells clean and minty. However, his is sharper, harsher. There is lime, and moss, and mahogany.

Taste: Like pure Moroccan mint, with that like sweet sourness you get on things like a tangfastics or a sourpatch kid. Like if you’re not expecting it, or you taste it for to long it will make you squirm.

Gabriel

Smell: Like walking into the kitchen of a bakery just before opening and they’re prepping everything. Mocha, malted sugar, rich caramel, creamy vanilla.  

Taste: All of the above again! Just so sweet and creamy. Like a spoonful of sugar.

Raphael

Smell: Very similar to Cas, floral, but less earthy, and more sterile. Like aloe vera and antiseptic.

Taste: Again, very clean. He has a flavour the way cucumber has flavour? Refreshing, clean, but not notable.

Michael/Adam 😍

Smell: Kind of like the ocean, meets the forrest. Musk, white lilies, salt, collided with pine, sandalwood, and cedar. Cold, but familiar, ya know?

Taste: Hear me out: Fruit loops, and Dr Pepper. Like Michael has little say over what they eat, that’s all on Adam. And after the initial, ‘I haven’t eaten in 1200 years, I’m gonna eat everything I craved’ has worn off. He’s just like, a normal guy (who does not need to eat because he shares his body with an immortal angel). So, I can see him mostly reaching for snacks that make him feel good, that remind him of his mum, or his childhood, something comforting; like sugary cereals and fizzy drinks. I love them, I will take no criticism.

Rowena

Smell: Like an apothecary. Rich and indulgent. Very aromatic with lots of deep woody tones, sweet cherry, dark rose and other florally scents.

Taste: Like a bottle of mataro, or Nebbiolo wine. Spice, cherry, plum, smoke. She both smells and tastes intoxicatingly expensive.   

Chuck

Smell: Kind of musky, cottony, leafy. I don’t really imagine him smelling too strongly of anything.

Taste: Summary and tart, like a sea breeze cocktail. (Grapefruit, cranberry, lime – an acquired taste)  

Amara

Smell: Similar to Chuck, I sort of envision an absence of smell. Maybe just hints of amber, sandalwood, and a musky citrusy scent.

Taste: Like a white dessert whine, like Riesling. Dry but sweet. Honey, and pears.

Billie

Smell: Bergamot, rose, silk, and cocoa. Inviting and pleasant, but with an undertone of darkness.

Taste: Very similar to scent, sweet and warm but with an aftertaste of something bitter; blackcurrant and dark chocolate

Benny

Smell: Robust (Copper, ginger, tobacco,) but enticing (amber, cardamom, cinnamon).

Taste: I mean, I have tried really had to not add blood to any of the previous entries, but Benny undeniably tastes like blood.

Kevin

Smell: Not good. Pre-prophethood, not so much; I imagine like mint, green tea, jasmine, the kind of smell you would expects from a reasonably priced aftershave. During prophethood, the aftershave is long forgotten; its more fried chicken, old paper, and forgetting to shower for 9 days.

Taste: Like redbull, chexmix, and mouthwash.

Eileen

Smell: Like peaches, and roses, rich chocolate, and strong coffee.

Taste: Chocolate and coffee again, but hints of sparkly summer fruits.

Ketch

Smell: Like high end British aftershaves only the royal family know off, something with notes of fig, and oud, and other pretentious smells. The small of cigar smoke, and leather follow him around too.

Taste: Like earl grey tea, and dry gin.

Balthazar

Smell: Kind of like ketch, some high end and expensive (if he actually had to pay for it). But woodsier, and fresh. He would also have that hidden undertone of violet.

Taste: Creamy and hazelnutty, but there’s a constant aftertastes alcohol, and something metallic to him, no  matter what comes first.

📣Milk Tea likes being mr.big mad dom but he nuts harder if you pull his hair and it's been said before he's a whore when drunk (still gotta do that eventually). Vanilla Milk is a hard masochist - prolly the only fem masochist besides Callie. The Cowboy hat stays on with Root beer. Spice likes it when their darling cries (it's a little cause their tears are pretty but mostly he likes being the one to lick kiss them away. Screamscicle has a fuck doll of their darling in the same closet as their skeletons and likes it fuck it while in that same closet because they went they're mad they imagine having passionate sex with their love next to the body of whoever pissed them off. Cotton Candy has probably used their jizz in a couple paintings for you. Chocolate Milk is the loudest during sex and gets teary eyed when he nuts. This ain't a bad thing really but he's shy about it and part of the reason his darling lives in the basement. About 60 percent of Ginger's time in the garage is used for cooking up machines and toys for her and her darling to use in the bedroom

However, I was curious if you’ve ever done food for seduction. If you wanted to get someone into your bed, what would you cook them before hand? And do Tamrielic cultures have a standard “come hither” meal?

If it's a romantic meal you're after, you've come to the right place. Whether it's Heart's Day or something a little more low key, you'll make anyone in Tamriel drool over you and your kitchen prowess with these meals!

Altmer

Just like with anything else in the Summerset Isles, subtlety is key when wooing. Relationships can take centuries to build between Altmer, so some choose to speed things up a little with what's known as a courtship basket: a not-so-simple picnic that's bound to wow. First, pick a stunning picnic location and an even more stunning wine. Load up that basket with all of Summerset's finest, from peach blossom indrik ricotta and Russafeld Heights grape honey to freshly baked spiced loaves and caviar. The rest is up to you!

Argonians

As many know, Argonians become life mates through bonding ceremonies, which are a quintessential part of Saxhleel culture. Bonding ceremonies usually entail a feast, usually with foods purported to put the happy couple in an amorous mood. One of the most famous aphrodisiac dishes is juicy Moss-Foot Croaker tree frog legs grilled in pandan leaves with wild bush honey, served atop gratinated witchetty grubs and Spotted Seatrout roe.

Bosmer

Love is a precious thing in Valenwood, and courtship often involves lots of food to test a potential spouse's skill in the kitchen and as a homemaker. The much-loved Husband's or Wife's Pie (known to some as Courtship Pie) tests those culinary skills from the fiddly all-butter thunderbug carapace crust to the twelve-hour meat and jagga filling. It's an exercise in patience and love to be sure!

Bretons

Nothing is quite as romantic as a night in Wayrest at a nondescript, candlelit gourmet restaurant with a two-year waitlist. If you can't wait that long, do the next best thing and host that dinner at home (the bedchamber is just around the corner, no?). Popular courtship dishes are generally rich and include foie gras with wild berry and shallot coulis, lamb saddle served medium rare with black truffle sauce, and salted caramel and brandy custard mille-feuille.

Dunmer

The famous Queen and lover Barenziah was particularly fond of a certain dish, which Dunmer in the many years after her influence still present to potential mates as a not-so-subtle hint at something more. The dish is none other than the notoriously finicky marshmerrow and comberry choux-fflé, which is exactly what it sounds like: a feat of culinary engineering that combines delicate marshmerrow and scuttle soufflé in a clamshell of sweet saltrice choux pastry. Guaranteed to make any Dark Elf fawn over you as if you were Narsis Dren.

Imperials

Imperials aren't exactly renowned for being the best with big feelings (it's all the Divine guilt), so showing someone you love them with food is the most common love language in the Province. Whether it's one of Salmo's sweetrolls, a hearty home cooked meal, or an unforgettable stay at one of the Imperial City's top hotels, there's no wrong way to go about Imperial courtship food. However, if you really want to impress, go for a dark chocolate and pomegranate torte, with a fudgy melting chocolate centre and topped with pomegranate treacle. Indulgent!

Khajiit

It's said that Khajiiti love is as fiery as their curries, but we all know better than to eat a hot curry on a date. So, what does one offer their partner when romantically inclined in Elsweyr? Try a silk-wrapped box of moon sugar bonbons from the closest gourmet sweet shop! A box of moon sugar candy is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can woo a Khajiit with, whether it's cardamom-milk cakes or hard boiled coconut and ginger sweets. Just be careful at the confectioners, because clashing flavours are a sign of bad taste...

Nords

If there's one race whose digestive system is directly linked to their nether regions, it's Nords. Just the mention of a romantic meal of buttery mudcrab legs with sourdough, twice-roasted elk basted in juniper spiced Honningbrew Mead, and snowberry pudding with a Nord Ale caramel drizzle is enough to make any Skyrim native do that thing where they brush their hair behind their ear while biting their lip at you.

Orcs

Historically speaking, there are two food items that are a must for wooing an Orc: echatere cheese, and proper Wrothgarian ale. Put the two together and you'll be planning a spring wedding. Echatere cheese and Orcish ale fondues, pies, sauces, and much more are the best way to use these star ingredients, but I prefer a bit of a twist: echatere cheesecake with a caramelised biscuit crust and berry-ale compote.

Redguards

Redguards are known for being passionate lovers, who write rambling love poetry and frantically check their birthsigns for relationship compatibility. With that in mind, you're going to have to work hard in the kitchen to gain a Redguard's love. If you're not sure where to start, skip the Middas special camel-stomach meatloaf at the inn and get right to the kitchen to make some rasmalai! This unique spiced dessert of sweet cottage cheese balls are served with crushed pistachios, and a cardamom, saffron, and rose-infused cream. The punchier and more balanced the spices, the more likely you are to pull that date.

In response to the perfume ask, I wear a lot of "food" smells (coffee, VANILLA, apple), but also some florals. I want to branch out a little and try something not as "bright" I guess? Maybe dark and sexy. If that makes sense 😭😭

oh babyyyyy it does....when i think dark/sexy but still food i think cinnamon. i think chocolate. i think spice. tonka bean. my suggestion for this is always angels' share by kilian. it can be a little strong for daytime wear in the spring so a dab will do you. it's very sexy and dries down for a very long lasting finish, the last time i wore it out it lasted all night and i still smelled it strongly the next morning when i showered. the top note is rich cognac but the base is vanilla. middle notes are tonka and cinnamon.

i used to religiously wear good girl by carolina herrera but changed it up and this also falls in the darker/sexier category for me. tonka bean, bergamot to freshen it a little, sweet top notes and a coffee note too that is really nice. i actually would recommend this one higher than angels' share because it's easier to work with and is pretty much universally liked.

for more niche sexy/dark scents i'd also recommend sticky fingers by francesca bianchi. it smells like the worlds sexiest dive bar lmaooo but it's also really strong. i also like ginger biscuit by jo malone but it is an investment so i would recommend finding a decant of it first to see if you like it. it's intensely gingery, spicy, but mouthwateringly sweet and edible beneath it.

Apples dipped in honey and honey cakes are popular across the Jewish world around Rosh Hashanah. But if you grew up in Israel, you most likely came across a unique variation of honey treats: duvshaniyot. These dense, dark, round honey cookies are a must in many families’ High Holidays nosh rotation.

The modest duvshaniyot (their name derives from the Hebrew word dvash, meaning honey) seem to have been part of the Israeli repertoire forever and you can find them on the cookie shelves in every supermarket in the country. They are cheap, pareve and last forever, so no wonder they have become a regular for Rosh Hashanah afternoon tea, for breaking the fast on Yom Kippur, and for dipping in a cold glass of milk in the sukkah. But these unassuming cookies hold a long history, as most Jewish and Israeli dishes do. 

Duvshaniyot are the Israeli adaptation of a popular Russian cookie called pryaniki. Dating back to medieval Russia, pryaniki were made with honey, rye flour and berry juice, and were known simply as “honey bread.” Starting around the 12th or 13th centuries, when Russia started opening up to imports from the Middle East and India, spices and dried fruit were added to the cookie. In different regions throughout Russia, people experimented with new additions to this cookie, from jam filling to a later invention of sweetened condensed milk. Some versions were imprinted using delicate wooden forms, and some were simply rolled by hand and dipped in sugar glaze — the same version that’s still popular in Israel today.

People sometimes confuse pryaniki with German lebkuchen (aka gingerbread cookies), but it is rare to see ginger added to these classic Russian cookies, and even lebkuchen don’t always have ginger in them. Traditionally, pryaniki were spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, coriander, and even black pepper and cumin. In fact, their name, pryaniki, comes from the Russian word for spiced, pryanik.

Different versions of pryaniki can be found around Eastern Europe, like piernik in Poland and lect cookies in Slovenia, which are heart-shaped, painted red and artfully decorated with colorful icing. These Eastern European versions were traditionally served around Christmas, but were adapted by Jews for their own holidays, mainly Rosh Hashanah, for the use of the symbolic honey.

From Eastern Europe, the little honey cookie made its way to Israel and the United States. “The Settlement Cook Book,” a classic 1901 American Jewish cookbook by Lizzie Black Kander, includes two versions of lebkuchen, both with citrus and almonds, but no ginger. Even more interesting, is that neither include honey, but instead call for brown sugar or molasses.

An early Israeli cookbook, “Folklore Cookbook” by Molly Bar-David, has recipes for honey cookies that are similar to pryaniki and for lebkuchen. Bar-David suggests adding ginger to the honey cookies and calls for margarine instead of butter, maybe to keep the cookies pareve.

Today, Israeli manufacturers of duvshaniyot must be doing a good job, as I notice the same Israeli brand cookies at many Russian stores in the United States. But maybe because duvshaniyot are readily available in every supermarket, most Israelis do not prepare them at home. That’s a shame, because as is the case with most baked goods, homemade is better. And when the recipe is as easy as the one below, there’s no reason not to.

You can add any of the classic gingerbread cookie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, coriander, clove, and even black pepper and cumin) as well as cocoa powder, strong coffee or chopped chocolate. Candied citrus peel or any tart candied fruit, as well as citrus zest. You can try to replace some of the flour with rye flour to be closer to the original Russian version, or replace some of the flour with almond meal and make it closer to the German lebkuchen. It’s up to you.

Some recipes, including centuries-old recipes, suggest letting the dough rest for a few hours and up to a week before baking the cookies. This will deepen its flavors and will make rolling the dough easier. But even if you bake it right away, the cookies will improve with time, so I suggest baking them at least two days before serving. You can easily prepare them the week before Rosh Hashanah and then serve them for break the fast on Yom Kippur.

My cherished @schnarfer. How wonderful that our little pieces of the internet intersected such that we could meet. It really does feel like I've known you always sometimes...

And how delightful it has been to be a bit of a garçon de cuisine in your kitchen as of late! Inspired by our convo about reclists as pairing menus, for the @swiftiscruff friendship exchange^ I've whipped up a very non-serious one (liberties absolutely taken with the genre) that is a riff on your masterlist and its wonderful contents. 🖤✨

A dish close to the hearts of our whole kitchen. A perfect selection for those who have fallen for a fuckboy and find it therapeutic to recognise your past in a wonderfully raunchy but still angsty story. The finish of this dish manages to incorporate senses of both sadness and hopefulness, making for a cathartic aftertaste.

Recommended pairing A warming Mexican hot chocolate. You'll appreciate how it matches the spice and provides you with some added comfort when things get achy.

Endurance (15.11k)

You will never forget the first time you experience this dish and will always find a way to convince yourself that you aren’t boring for ordering it time after time. A slice of spiciness coupled with a heavy dash of the forbidden add immense depth to a texturally rich feast full of historical flavour.

Recommended pairing A U.S. Army-issued chocolate bar and maybe a prairie oyster for the vibes. But then make sure to treat yourself to some actually  nice-tasting chocolate.
