Charles V, King of Spain, Holy Roman Emperor, etc. reigned 1519-1556
His two iconic bastards are also in this bracket.
from @master-of-the-opera-house:
Universal empire babey! Sure he lucked into it, but very much successfully kept it afloat in his time on the throne, more than less anyway.
Born on toilet at a party at 3am
Mummy issues
Daddy issues
Shagged his step-grandma when he was 19. Love wins!
Look at the size of that chin! A peasant had to tell him to close his mouth bc he couldn't keep his jaws shut by default
If Leopold was the ugliest in the Austrian branch he's probably the ugliest or at least second in the Spanish branch
Approved of a cocks-out nude statue of himself walked so nsfw fanart commissions could run
The ✨ confidence ✨ he had to do that uwu
God complex
Accidentally shot a peasant dead with a crossbow once as a teen oopsie
((probably wasn't the same peasant))
Burnt out and got depressed at the end of his life the least he could win is a poll
Split the inheritance into the Spanish and Austrian branch so without him we literally wouldn't even be voting today
Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, reigned, 1658-1705
So many wars going on in this reign
Also from @master-of-the-opera-house (rooting for both sides I guess):
LOOK! AT! THAT! DRIP! Serving! Slaying! Who doesn't love a red lip?
Often termed the ugliest member in the Austrian branch which is saying a LOT he's a winner baby! 💅
He must've had such confidence uwu
Un-screwed his way back from a pretty rocky start from beefing with everyone ((9 years war Spanish succession etc)), to the success in the Ottoman Siege of Vienna
Wasn't originally trained to rule even! Held up well tbh
Also backpedalled from a succession crisis
His wife called him "Uncle" because she was also his niece who doesn't love when couples are close 🤪🤪
Hated Louis XIV and don't we all
Responsible for a lot of cool baroque golden age stuffandthings
Freddie Mercury moustache before Freddie Mercury made it cool
Theatre kid
MuSicAL tHeatRe kid.

Favorite Color(s): Dark colours and certain pastels, anything that doesn't look like an eye sore or gross
Favorite Flower(s): peonies, lavender, garden roses, forget-me-not, and blue hydrangeas
Favorite Movie(s): Stay Alive (2006), Moulin Rouge (2001), Mamma Mia! (2008), Mulan (1998), Les Miserables (2012)
TV Show(s): Revolutionary Girl Utena, Digimon, again too many to count
Favorite Food(s): Kare-Kare, Tteok-Bokki, Pizza, Cheeseburgers, Fries, Pasta, usually depends on what she hyperfixates on
Hobbies: Reading novels that fall under young adult, greek mythology related, fantasy, or even classics, cooking, singing, dancing as a form of leisure exercise (though not very good at freestyle), video gaming, art, doing runs, listening to music, reading and learning.
Musician(s): Too many to count or list but is found mostly listening to her top five artists: Hozier, Florence and the Machine, Mitski, Taylor Swift, and Fleetwood Mac, occasionally listens to David Bowie and Kate Bush.
Likes: Cats, books, memes, video games, puzzles, her family, coffee, pickles, trail mix, astronomy and astrology, anything witchcraft related, visiting historical sites, learning, swimming, the beach, stormy weather, learning about flower languages and plants, listening to podcasts that are mainly true crime or character/media analyses, psychology related stuff, cinnamon, people who ask nicely and talk without malice or anger.
Dislikes: Fried Chicken that has too much oil in it or repeatedly being served, being seen as her being like parents/her father, the weather being way too hot, creeps, misplacing or losing her items, people who chew loudly, sewer rats, stepping on things with her bare feet, basically anything gross, certain conspiracy theories, people lying and those who deceive her, any type of abuse, harassment or violations against someone’s consent, animal abuse, cucumbers, going to the sea/beach without slippers, sand getting into places that shouldn't be in, physical touch from people who she aren't close with without warning, people who don't ask nicely or yell, patriarchy, weird textures.
Fears: Being seen as someone who is a burden to people, being seen less as a person and discriminated due to her learning disability which is ADHD, failing or becoming a disappointment, being seen as a terrible person, being betrayed, losing her loved ones, becoming like her father, the apocalypse, certain carnivorous reptiles such as snakes, heights, and certain images of saints aka 'Santo'.
Flaws: En, while highly self-aware that she can overthink, has this certain tendency to keep her thoughts to herself and bottling it up due to her upbringing and her fear of being a burden to people. Though while this is mainly solved and is making progress of keeping in touch with people she cares and trusts enough, the habit is still there. She also has the habit of apologizing when there's no need to and also thinking that she's invincible but not to the point of tomfoolery especially when it comes to dangerous or high-risk situations but rather, this manifests as mostly in completely mundane things such as her sleeping and eating habits. She also has this internalized vindictiveness to her that sometimes shows itself from time to time but this is regulated.
She also has this habit of offering sage advice to people but never follows her own advice, thus calling herself as a 'walking contradiction' due to this, she also developed this habit of taking care of others, making sure their needs are well met and forgets about her own, sometimes her 'mother hen' like habits can be smothering but manages to keep it on the low. Despite of her flaws, she is currently working through these issues to the best of her abilities.

While it is common knowledge amongst her peers that En comes from a big middle class family back in the Philippines, she doesn't really mention any of them by name, considering her position as a hitman and a member of Passione. The info below is taken directly from her file from Passione as per requested by the Speedwagon Foundation to add to their database and associates. It seems that most of it is blacked out as it follows:
KNOWN RELATIVES: Father: █████ ███████ Flores Age: [REDACTED] Status: Alive Stand User: No Mother: ███████ ████████ Age: [REDACTED] Status: Alive Stand User: No Grandmother: ████ Flores Age: [REDACTED] Status: Alive Stand User: No Notes from the Researchers: has been suspected as a Ripple User as is the rest of the subject's family from the 'Flores' side. This is also suspected with Subject 13 herself considering that one of her stand's abilities happens to be healing through the means of breathing. -Subject 13, aka Eunice ███████ Flores, first born daughter of █████ ███████ Flores (second son of ████ Flores and the late ███████ Flores) and ███████ ████████, has been raised by the matriarch and former patriarch of the Flores family since she was born. Medical records state that the Subject was born prematurely and was raised by the new grandparents. Our researchers have also noted that Subject 13 happens to be the only known natural born stand user amongst her family members, and by extension, her 12 cousins. Subject 13 happens to have at least four known siblings, but the whereabouts or status of the fourth sibling happen to be unknown.

Stand Name: Heroes
Stand Namesake: Heroes (David Bowie Album & Song)
Ability Types: Close-Range/Long-Range, Semi-Sentient
Form Type: Natural Humanoid Stand
Tumblr media
Stats:
Tumblr media
History: Heroes is a close-range/long-range natural humanoid stand of En Flores who possesses a range of abilities focused on air/weather related abilities. Though she’s been with the user from the beginning, Heroes makes her first physical appearance to a young En at the age of 16 after the latter had experience a bout of strong emotions, most particularly emotional distress over something that happened during En’s time as a Junior High student (which, funnily enough, happens to be En stressing over her History test) and has been with her ever since.
Personality: Noted by some of En's friends and enemies alike, Heroes, while seemingly looking like as if she has no innate personality due to her stoic disposition, has shown bouts of intense protectiveness over her user, En and by extension, those who En holds dear to her heart, mirroring the user's mother bear habits. While it's not very obvious to some, Heroes seems to sometimes have a separate consciousness from her user and has been noted to have mannerisms similar to that of a curious owl or a playful and mischievous feline at times.
In battle, she remains as composed as she is in general, barely showing any emotion unless En herself feels a strong bout of them, which Heroes would mirror. Another thing that not most people know much about is that Heroes can speak for herself but instead of a normal voice, those who aren't close with En get to hear the sound of every storm, howling winds, and blizzards and a banshee's* *combined but En understands her perfectly. However when a connection is formed, Heroes' voice becomes crystal clear, speaking in a voice that's similar to her user's but much more ethereal, airy and echoey with the hints of the previous sounds and her way of speaking is mentioned to be very polite and smart.
Physical Description: Heroes is a humanoid Stand of a feminine figure, resembling its user in some of its proportions. Often characterized by its free flowing golden locks tipped with silver, blue winged helmet-like mask with the Christian cross in the middle, obscuring its eyes and the upper half of its face, and pale silver skin and the motif that its sporting being a notable mix of a valkyrie, a ballerina, and Elizibethan fashion judging from its collar and overskirt.
The lower part of its face has these distinctive markings of two vertical lines across its eyes and a half circle under its lower lip which are painted gold.
Heroes wears a body suit of gold and blue with two elongated hexagonal shapes at the sides of its hips, a tear drop shape opening right over where its belly button should be, and multiple lines sewn onto it finished by the feathered blue Medici styled collar and overskirt detailed with thin, golden tendrils of pure lightning; it also wears knee-high boots where the kneepads baring some sort of resemblance to the frangipani flower, african violets, strawberry blossoms, and marsh marigolds with the stem pointed out as a blade in the middle of a ribbon spiral finished off with two-tiered pauldrons resting on its shoulders.
Abilities: Heroes is a highly versatile stand possessing the ability to control the weather. Though Heroes’ ability may be near similar to Weather Report’s, it’s not the same. Unlike Weather Report, Heroes can manipulate certain elements such as thunder and lighting and be able to create weapons out from the elements that they can control. One of Heroes’ featured abilities are giving its user the ability to fly and glide in the air, breath healing, controlling the atmosphere and the weather, aerokinetic invisibility, air attacks, and weather weaponry. It can also have control over any form of precipitation and storms and grant the user a banshee-like physiology.
Its range when creating large-scale storms is based on the location where the user is currently situated. The most notable example is that if Heroes and En found themselves in a city such as Venice, Italy, that would mean the entirety of Venice would be affected, and where both the stand and user are will serve as the main landfall zone where the storms are particularly worse than the rest of the location.

Okay so hi! First off the pic came from here and that I just edited it on my computer considering I haven't been able to draw anything as of late :"DD which would also explain why the picture I have for my sona lacks glasses ;u;
As for the timelines, there are at least two known variations of it! The main verse, which I will be calling as strawberries and cigarettes, and a secondary verse called which will be called as fulmine dorato [eng. golden lightning]!
So basically, in the strawberries and cigarettes verse, the events of Golden Wind + Purple Haze Feedback take place in the year 2015 as opposed to 2001. It also means that the events of DIU happened at less than a year before the events of Golden Wind basically making Josuke, En, and Fugo be the same age. Also this is a verse which basically reverses the deaths of Leone, Narancia, Bruno, and La Squadra but they all carry some form of scarring from the nature of their deaths and whatnot. I got inspired by theclockworkkid on ig and this one fic I read way back in 2020 something and it just stuck on me.
For the fulmine dorato verse, its basically the canon version of golden wind/purple haze feedback (no one dies in La Squadra and Bucci Gang bc I am a sucker and I want them to have happy endings HBVFHJASFB) and that En has been around Passione since she was 15 and was originally a part of La Squadra before being put under the custody of Bruno Bucciarati's team due to 'mysterious circumstances as of late' (basically, La Squadra protecting their youngest bc they're about to betray the boss after Sorbet and Gelato's deaths, only to find out that En would go down the same path as they did aka betraying the boss insert spiderman pointing meme here)
so yeah! Which leads into the tag of 🍓🌦children of the revolution//fugoen children🌦🍓that can be seen on my blog and the family's introduction which can be read here!

Gossip Girl Playlists: Theatre Kid AU edition! —Blair’s
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Dan's] [Nate's] [Serena's]
I don’t even remember exactly how this started, but it’s @strideofpride’s fault.
The concept began as: if they were in this world, what would be in the GG mains’ MT books? What would be their go-to song? Their 16 bar cut? And then, I got on spotify, and got wayyyy too carried away (typical me), and it sort of morphed into: what are the NJBC’s (plus Daniel’s) senior musical theatre recital programs? And now I have this: a quartet of playlists of repertoire handpicked by me for these fake people, and I am very proud of them.
All selections based on my very particular taste, honed from a childhood in community theater, an adolescence in high school musicals, and a 4 year degree from a majority musical theatre school
And, as in the tradition of Glee and all plays within a play, the rep reflects something profoundly personal about the character, because you know I love a theme.
the meta:
Blair could be nothing but the ingenue right??? She wants to be the lead, the romantic girl, the one who gets to fall in love and gets the happy ending at every curtain. She wants to be the star.
Her voice: born to be the golden age ingenue. I actually have a lot of Thoughts on how modern singers sing this music (snobby bitchy angry thoughts), and I am inclined to think Blair would agree with me. And I didn’t quite know what it was until I was talking with my dad about a production of Fiddler I just saw with the worst “Far From the Home I Love” I ever heard but I digress and I told him: “these women. Sing like they know what an email is.” and that’s the thing. Blair as an MT though, she would bring in that warmth, that roundedness.
References: Kelli O’Hara, Audra McDonald, Pippa Soo, Cristin Miloti, Judy Garland, and a girl in my class in undergrad who I swear to god was Shirley Jones’ second coming. She’s also a pageant queen, so let’s call her Miss Iowa
the tracklist:
The Beauty Is — The Light in the Piazza
Now, most people would go for the title song of this musical, but I think Blair would prefer the technical challenge of the ingenue’s first solo.
Now, there was once this guy, Richard Rodgers, and he was a god of song, and he had this grandson, Adam Guettel, and Adam Guettel is a god damn genius, and has, sadly, written so few masterpieces for us to enjoy. (is it bc he and his muse Kelli O’Hara broke up? Who’s to say). But he gave us this opus, a neoromantic musical callback to his ancestor’s work, about an american woman and her daughter that travel to Florence on vacation, and they get swept up in the city, and ROMANCE.
Clara wanders the Uffizi Gallery, musing about humanity and thinking about the boy who saved her hat from being blown away
Much More — The Fantasticks
It’s the world’s longest running musical ever, so it must be doing something right! It’s an inverse Romeo and Juliet. Two fathers pretend to feud for years, to reverse psychology their children into falling in love. There’s also this spanish bandit? Idk. the fathers go a bit overboard with the plot and some strife happens, but there’s a happy ending!
The sheltered, but ambitious dreamer Luisa sings about living a grand life. She’s a little….out there, in a way that reminds me of baby blair of the early seasons. “Please god please don’t let me be normal!”
No One Else — Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
Dave Malloy knew that, unlike Les Mis, the only way to get away with a War and Peace: The Musical musical was to zero in on only one section. Galaxy brained. And you just KNOW that Blair Waldorf would be so so so into playing Natasha Rostova. (Pippa Soo leads with the belt in the recording, bc she’s amazing at it, but I see Blair adding her own Kelli O’Hara mix to it).
This has become thee ingenue song of contemporary lit. Natasha Rostova, dreamer and romantic, waits and waits and waits in Moscow for her fiance Andrey to return from the war.
Just You Wait — My Fair Lady
Blair would ever-so-deftly do a Pygmalion/Taming of the Shrew set for her recital. I just know she would.
Eliza Doolittle, fed up with her tutor Henry Higgins’ bullshit, is determined to prove him wrong. She shall be a lady, and show him the fuck UP.
I Hate Men — Kiss Me, Kate
A play within a play! Lilli Vanessi is playing Katherine in a new musical of Taming of the Shrew, which forces her to work with her ex. She is Not Amused.
Show Me — My Fair Lady
Another song where Eliza Doolittle has HAD it. This time with young Freddy, whose more a words than actions guy.
Everybody Loves Louis — Sunday in the Park with George
Sondheim wrote a whole-ass musical based on a painting and it is a goddamn masterpiece! Plus like, the name in the song, it was too perfect to pass up.
Famous (not yet) painter, George Seuraut’s love interest Dot (I know lmao), compares the absentminded George to the attentive baker Louis, and makes her choice.
Getting Married Today — Company
Next in her Sondheim set, from the classic introspective comedy on adulthood and adult relationships. Patter song of all time. Also so very close to blair’s show arc that I HAD to do it.
Amy gets a mad case of cold feet right before walking down the aisle to marry Paul.
Raunchy — 110 in the Shade
From the dream team that gave us the Fantasticks: this bop
Lizzie, a lovely, headstrong spinster, spry of wit and sharp of tongue, day dreams about stepping out of her comfort zone, and being the center of attention.
Sooner or Later — Dick Tracy
Not technically a musical, Sondheim wrote this for the 90s movie Dick Tracy & Madonna. The definitive femme fatale ballad.
Breathless Mahoney—I swear to god that’s the character’s name—is a nightclub singer and mobster girlfriend and should probs be in witness protection. She sings this song instead.
Its Gotta Be Bad to Be Good
A cabaret song by Lenny Bernstein. I like this recording bc it’s the right balance of schmultzy and technical. And it fits how I imagine Blair would sing it. (like the float at the end? So very Blair.)
Circus
Again, not from a show, Drew Gasparini is a fabulous composer, but as of right now, most of his releases are great concepts for shows that haven’t been on a major stage. Maybe if we stopped all this jukebox nonsense but that’s none of my business
Anyways, I love this song. He really did write Victoria Pedretti in You, the Song, before You was even a thing. It’s that right level of batshit insane that Blair inhabits so well, but rarely really shows. I can see the gang convincing her to program this because it plays to a different facet of her personality than all the ingenue stuff. And that facet is: terrifying.
Honey Bun — South Pacific
Blair was born to sing all the R&H girls. Nellie I think is one where her and Serena’s types and strengths overlap, which of course is rich with story opportunity!
The nurses and GIs at this WWII base put on a Follies production of their own for some holiday cheer. Nellie closes out the show with this number. Idk if they meant for it to come off so gay, but I aint mad about it.
People Will Say We’re in Love (duet w/ Dan) — Oklahoma!
This was a late addition, but when I thought of it I couldn’t NOT. It’s about the Plausible Deniability™
In a small cowtown (where a certain blogger went to preschool winkwonk) Laurey and Curly insist that they do not like each other! Nope!
What Do You Call A Man Like That? — The Bridges of Madison County
Mmmm okay so, this is one of my favorite musicals ever, and it may just have to do with the time in my life that I got into it, but I think it is truly underrated and beautiful and really the only JRB that’s worth the hype of his name (she says even though there is a L5Y playlist on Spotify that she made herself). It’s based off the novel and the film (starring Meryl Streep!) and it combines the lady country heartland style of middle america with big sweeping italian romanticism, giving us this golden age in the 21st century sound and we didn’t appreciate it enough!!!!
(maybe I only like it because Kelli O’Hara sings it and Steven Pasquale is a DILF, idc. I’m right.)
Francesca, an Italian war wife who moved to Iowa after marrying an american GI, is now a housewife with two teenage kids. Her husband and kids go away for a farmer’s convention (county fair), and while they’re away, she runs into and falls for Robert, a Nat Geo photographer who, again, is a hunk. She sings this song after their first meeting and trip to the famous covered bridge. “He’s so sincere, what the fuck is up with that?” daircore
The Gentleman Is a Dope — Allegro
Daircore
Kind of an oddball complicated flop for R&H, but it brought us this song, so it’s a winner. Emily, Dr. Joseph Taylor Jr.’s colleague, thinks he’s an idiot [affectionate].
If You Want Me — Once
A departure from the old world mt that’s dominated this playlist, but I think, in a world of Blair, consummate theater kid, who absolutely stuck with piano because it suited her ambitious end to stardom, would be really good at this role. Is it because I think Meester and Milioti have similar voices and vibes? Maybe. But the contemporary music in this isn’t like 21st century MT. it’s folk and indie, and I think Blair could inhabit that very well. And she’s got the range for this vocalizing
Brought together by music, a Girl in Dublin plays another song written by some Guy, hinting that she’s begun to fall for him. even though she’s married
The Hill — Once
All of the above. And just think about her sitting at the piano and singing this, like —
It’s The Number, the italicized “oh” number.
The Man that Got Away — A Star is Born (1954)
The second film in a legendary saga. Really a vehicle for Judy to make us FEEL things. Like with this number. You may recognize it from the other GG.
La Vie en Rose — as performed by Ute Lemper
You know she would.
What Good Would the Moon Be? — Street Scene
The Weil Foundation owes me money for talking up this show, but honestly, it’s so good. At least, the half-hour chunk I’ve shoehorned into these playlists is.
Rose’s skeazy boss insists that he could make her a star, but she elegantly and eloquently shuts him down with this cavatina
Simple Little Things — 110 in the Shade
It’s about the pure and simple love, babes!
In a deep philosophical discussion with the handsome stranger that’s new in town, Lizzie defends her own dreams
When Did I Fall in Love? — Fiorello
I may have gone overboard with the schmulz in this playlist, but like, it’s Blair, so…
Thea LaGuardia, as her husband Fiorello runs for mayor of NYC in 1929, is shocked to discover she’s actually in love with the guy.
Time After Time — Cyndi Lauper (as performed by Morgan James and Doug Wamble)
guitar!Dan agenda strikes again.

We chose as our project site the Barrio de las Letras, also known as the Literary Quarter, a neighbourhood full of history and culture in Madrid, Spain. Not only was the area home to many literary and theatrical artists during the Golden Age of Spain in the 17th century, but it is still a vibrant centre of literary and theatrical activity today. Inside the neighbourhood there is Saint Anne Square, a square dedicated to theatre, which throughout Madrid's history has been closely associated with the performing arts. It is home to the oldest theatre in Spain, the Teatro Español, which also produced the first Spanish grotesque play, Bohemia lights.

From Carlos Fuentes
Paris, 16 April 1966
Very dear Luis, A few lines, to tell you how excited I was to go and see The Golden Age at the Palais de Chaillot a few days ago. There wasn’t enough room for everyone; there were three long queues four people deep: tall, young and all there to demonstrate that they could, and would be intellectually free and ethically responsible spectators, and that they wouldn’t be treated like morons or children. Yes, that screening of your great film, Luis, became a tacit, enthusiastic and ironic demonstration in favour of artistic freedom just as the Gaullist censors were banning The Nun. But also, importantly: those young people identified completely with The Golden Age, with the imagery and meaning, the wonderful currency of Buñuel’s art; your films are now finding their new and true audience: these young people, for whom surrealism’s great insight – that playfulness and ethics together can be explosive, revolutionary – has now become today’s direct answer to the failure of life and art. They are setting themselves apart from the kind of art that is either just about form, pure, gratuitous style; or just about ideology, committed and ideological morality in the very worst sense of the words. I’m going to write something about this for Siempre;! The Golden Age impressed me more than ever. I have been watching signs of the révolte going on throughout this trip, in the United States with popular singers like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, writers like Norman Mailer and cartoonists like Feiffer, in German theatre with Peter Weiss’s Marat/Sade, in the whole anti-establishment movement in England, in Bellocchio’s new Italian cinema, and suddenly, after watching The Golden Age again, I’ve become aware of a real sense of unity, power and the potential for non-conformism right now: a potential way of living that is complete and revolutionary, that won’t degenerate into different approaches (playful or ethical), but that binds them in a kind of total humanity, a continual moving-forward of experience and conscience. I was moved, Luis, and I wanted to write to you as soon as possible to tell you, and to thank you, just as those young people who crowded into the Cinémathèque were thanking you.
I talked about you a lot with Octavio Paz when he was in Rome; and now, in Paris, with Vargas Llosa, Cortázar, Rodríguez Monegal, Gironella; we’re always discussing you and your work that we increasingly believe is the great point of reference for, and development of, writers and painters of Spanish descent. I’m going to Madrid with Gironella sometime in the middle of May; we want to write a book together about the deaths of the kings: Felipe II and Carlos the Cursed. As for me, I’ve handed in my new novel, Cambio de piel, to be translated in New York, and I’m now finishing Zona sagrada, it’s a novel about metamorphosis, about a film star and her son (who are really Circe and Telegonus, Ulysses’s forgotten son). I based it on the María-Quique relationship, but very different of course, and much elaborated; it’s not at all biographical.
Filming of Aura in Rome has finished. I haven’t seen the results yet, and I imagine they’ve had to make a lot of changes to stretch it to an hour and a half. The sets were wonderful though, as were Damiano Damiani’s intentions. Bini, the producer, is both intelligent and willing to take risks (he produced Pasolini’s films, Il vangelo secondo Matteo, etc.), he’s also interested in doing something with Mexico.
I was sad to read in Le Monde that production has stopped on The Monk. I can understand it, looking at the disgraceful treatment of La Religieuse. What can be done? If you want me to talk to Bini, let me know. Of course, there is the Vatican, but Bini managed to make and release La mandragola without cuts; he might be interested in filming it in Mexico, etc.
I found a beautiful little flat on the Rue du Cherche-Midi, on the corner of the Rue de l’Abbé Grégoire, near the Boulevard Raspail. I find it very easy to work in this city, stimulated by the theatres, exhibitions, and a daily film at the Rue Champollion, where people are now queuing up to see The Young One.
Rita and Cecilia send kisses; I send friendship, admiration, and affectionate best wishes to Jeanne, and the hope we shall meet again soon at La Closerie over a good Negroni.
Your friend, Carlos Fuentes

How does one study the influence of Spanish and Portuguese drama on world theatre?
Spanish and Portuguese drama have had a profound influence on world theatre, shaping the development of dramatic forms, themes, and styles across the globe. From the Golden Age of Spanish theatre in the 16th and 17th centuries to the modernist experiments of Portuguese theatre in the 20th century, the theatrical traditions of these two countries have produced some of the most innovative and…

Gossip Girl Playlists: Theatre Kid AU edition! —Nate’s
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Blair's] [Dan's] [Serena's]
And, as in the tradition of Glee and all plays within a play, the rep reflects something profoundly personal about the character, because you know I love a theme.
the meta:
Okay so Nate’s was realllllyyyyy hard to pin down, which makes sense because he as a character is hard to pin down, bc the show really only treated him like a whole-ass person for like 2 seasons. But, the beauty of men in musical theatre is they have much more license to just….do whatever the fuck they want—as opposed to women who get put into teeny tiny uncastable little boxes (but that’s a rant for another day).
The point is, Nate’s type: because of his looks and talent, people try to put him in the romantic leading man box, but he finds that sooooooo boooooooring. He does play some himbos (bc, why not play to your strengths?) but he gravitates to roles that are more of a stretch. The fun roles, the character roles. The ones that less enlightened folk would say he’s “too pretty to play.” He likes to go for the laugh! He doesn’t want to be Billy Bigelow, he wants to be the Emcee! (I also see him having a great run being one of Les Amis in Les Mis in his 20s; and as the hot boy in Mamma Mia.)
His range is—and I hate that I’m saying this but it really is applicable to men in MT–bari-tenor. He can get up there when he wants to, but doesn’t necessarily want to live in the land of the high belt. He has a great low range that makes him prime golden age hunk material, but again, not really his thing. Also, theatrekid!Nate is a DANCER. He’s good on his feet and he knows it!
References: Hugh Jackman, Jonathan Groff, Derek Klena, Killian Donnely, Matthew Morrison (but like, with a better personality); and a kid in my voice studio who I’ll call Bobby, who had the rich low range of a deep voiced angel but could dance his lil heart out.
the tracklist:
The Streets of Dublin — A Man of No Importance
A story about an Oscar Wilde stan who’s trying his darnedest to put on Salome with his community theater group. He tries to convince his hunky buddy Robbie to join in, but it’s not really Robbie’s thing.
I’m Not That Smart — The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
A zany raunchy comedy where grown ass adults play 12 year olds battling to the bitter end for a spot in the national spelling bee.
Leaf, a homeschool kid, is endearing, if easily distracted.
Joey, Joey, Joey — The Most Happy Fella
I’ll be honest, I just like this one because when sung right, it’s soooooo hot.
A traveling farmhand (can you guess his name?) explains why he never stays too long in one place. There’s lots of plot happening around him, but his only job as a character is to be sexy and cause problems.
Try to Remember — The Fantasticks
It’s the world’s longest running musical ever, so it must be doing something right! It’s an inverse Romeo and Juliet. Two fathers pretend to feud for years, to reverse psychology their children into falling in love. There’s also this spanish bandit? Idk. the fathers go a bit overboard with the plot and some strife happens, but there’s a happy ending!
This is the show opener, sung by the narrator/Spaniard-ex-machina El Gallo
Brush up Your Shakespeare (duet w/ Dan) — Kiss Me, Kate
A musical version of Taming with the Shrew is trying to get off the ground. There’s mobsters and divorced exes with sexual tension and lots of nonsense. And this bop.
Agony (duet w/ Dan) — Into the Woods
The only good thing that movie version gave me was Chris Pine tearing his shirt open. Ok, whore.
Two princes, one in love with Cinderella and one in love with Rapunzel, commiserate on their love lives. I’d call them himbos, but they don’t respect women enough. They’re kinda just sluts.
I’d Rather Be Sailing — A New Brain
See title for why I picked it.
The show was written from the composer’s experience when he was diagnosed and treated for an AVM. this song is actually sung by the main character’s boyfriend, so it nautical AND gay!
The Song that Goes Like This (duet w/ Serena) — Spamalot
I can so see Serena and Nate just enjoying being little freaks on stage together, they feed off each other and are big hams.
Sir Gahalad and the Lady of the Lake tick off the box of the broadway love ballad. And they break some glass.
I Am Aldopho — The Drowsy Chaperone
Severely underrated musical. This and Curtains are both wild, gershwin-y sounding romps where I don’t really remember the plot, but I remember not being able to breathe for laughing. This show is about a grand 20s wedding, but there’s hijinks afoot, and the bride’s chaperone is drowsy because she’s drunk, and for some reason the Spaniard-ex-machina, Aldolfo, tries to seduce her with this song. I can’t not picture this scene without a cape.
I Don’t Care Much — Cabaret
I just think. Nate would be such a good MC. I want that for him. I really do.
MC sings this song as narration, when singer Sally fights with her lover Cliff. Lots of shit is going on, but it’s really about the desperation and precipice and uncertainty that the MC and the Kit Kat Clubbers are living in in jazz age berlin.
You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught — South Pacific
MT guys get cast in this role if they look good shirtless, so. And it’s a better song than Younger than Springtime, like, yeesh. (this is the soldier set. I think Nate could also play that Miss Saigon guy, I don’t know the whole show well but I tried to listen to the guys big solo and I could not. anyway.)
Even though he’s in love, Lt. Cable’s deeply entrenched racism causes him to be a total jerk to his wartime love, Liat. Nellie’s same deeply entrenched racism ends her relationship with hot french dilf, Emile, when Emile seeks out advice, this song is Cable’s answer.
Come Back — Dogfight
Everybody was losing their minds over DEH but the real Pasek and Paul opus is this musical. It only ran off broadway but the feelings! And the songs!
In SF, a young GI meets and falls for a girl the day before he ships out to Vietnam, also the day before JFK’s assassination. This is the eleven o’clock number. He’s returning home, haunted, and broken, a marked contrast to the kid who left.
Make ‘Em Laugh — Singin’ in the Rain
A classic! Nate the actor would always be going for the bits
I Can’t Be Bothered Now — Crazy for You
a role for a DANCER. Bobby is a blue-blood banker’s son who just wants to dance. His mission takes him to a small cow town out west where he puts on a show. Gershwinian nonsense like that. It is very cute, though.
Moon-faced, Starry-eyed (duet w/ Serena) — Street Scene
Street Scene is technically an opera, but it’s a big extravagant blending of musical styles, from romantic 1900s opera to 1940s jazz. Guess which end of the spectrum this one’s on. It’s the comedic dance break before shit hits the fan in this New York apartment building. I can so see besties Serena and Nate being complete hams in this number.
Mae, a tenant of the building, comes back from a night out with her boyfriend, Dick. They are drunk and they are dancing!
Soul of a Man — Kinky Boots
Nate wearing those shoes. Send post.
Charlie makes the bold—but sound! —business decision to redirect the family shoe factory to produce shoes designed and marketed towards drag queens. When Charlie snaps from the pressure of running the business, he ponders his family legacy and “what does it mean to be a Man”? Nathaniel-coded!
Not the Boy Next Door — Boy from Oz
I just think….theatre kid!Nate is soooo gay. And being in the “gay by may” MT major world, he grows into himself in a marvelous way.
Aussie musical legend Peter Allen returns to Australia after his separation from Liza Minelli, and realizes he’s grown out of the place. Also he’s so very Not-Straight.

So this is kind of about Shakespeare; I read a while ago that Tudor era theatre was considered a novelty to foreigners because it was sort of an English idiosyncrasy, culturally speaking. But when I tried to research other theatre practices in Europe (specifically Scandinavia) I could literally ONLY find things about England. Do you know anything about where I could find info on not-English (specifically like Swedish/Norwegian if you know anything) theatre around 1600?
You’re right that early modern English drama is a rather unique phenomenon, but It’s not that no other country had theatres. In fact, Spain was having what’s called the ‘golden age of theatre’, and produced four times the amount of plays written in England at the time. What was unique about English theatre was more to do with its removedness from many European traditions of theatre. And it's lack of female actors. So while there are many references to older religious drama, the Commedia dell’arte traditions, stocks characters, Aristotlean unities (this was what France was obsessed about) and basic ideas about honour, reputation and hypocrisy in English plays, they aren’t quite as tied down to these stock themes, plots and characters (of course this is a bit of a simplification: Spanish theatre also had lots of different innovations).
Moving onto Scandinavia… I know that there’s a long tradition of spoken poetry (like the Icelandic Eddas and the Finnish Kalevala)… but this isn’t really my area of expertise, so I asked a friend of mine who’s a Scandinavian Shakespeare specialist. It’s not his actual area of study either, but he had more of an idea than me, and this is his answer:
That is a good question… I think that plays came with the court culture (particularly with James I and VI his Danish wife Anne) might have sparked something.Having looked around there is at least Andreas Johannis Prytz’s comedy written in 1622 (it’s called ‘En lustigh Comoedia Om den Stormechtighe Sweriges, Göthes, Wendes Konung etc. Konung Gustaf then Första …’) apparently about the tumultuous time of Gustav Vasa. So yes, there were plays around that period.
Project Runeberg is a good place to look for this kind of stuff (http://runeberg.org/katalog-p.html). It has a chronology of stuff digitalised. The flags are a bit confusing as they refer to language only. The political map was shifty in that period (for example Sigfrid Aron Forsius, a minister and natural scientist was born in Helsinki but wrote in Swedish). Only in the early nineteenth century do you start to get dramatists popping up in conjunction with nationalism, especially in Norway and Finland.
So there you go! I’m sorry it’s not specifically about Sweden and Norway, but I hope that helps. And thank you for the question. I learnt something today.
