Hey I love ur amvs!! I was wondering if you had advice for someone that's interested in making their own? I'm not sure what the best programs are for editing or getting clips. Ty! :)

this is so flattering thank you so much!!!!! I LOVE making amvs…… favourite thing in the world to do so this is gonna be probably longer than you wanted…..

I’ve bounced around just about everything in the last couple years so I can give you a few different ideas!!

For clip sourcing:

initially, I used episodes that I had downloaded as supernatural was airing so the quality was iffy and there were logos on a lot of them… THEN I went the screen recording route (for when I was on my phone, I’ve never tried this on desktop but I know this works well for others!!) but I found that the quality still bugged me AND I ended up with nearly 2000 supernatural clips on my phone…… which was a nightmare to sort through… NOW I use this which is very fabulous and easy to use… you can select which eps to download if you don’t need all of them!! (and no vpn needed)

For editing:

I’ve used a lot of different programmes til I found one that worked well for me so definitely shop around…. youtube tutorials are your friend…. when I started, I was using sony vegas pro…. which worked fine even though my laptop was the first one ever made… but I didn’t want to pay for it and it got blocked on my laptop forever and windows would notttt let me get it back…….. SO, as I mentioned, for a while I was editing on my phone which I would personally nottt recommend for full length amvs… smaller edits would be completely fine!! I used splice which was very basic but it got the job done!! actually. looking through my videos- everything from mr perfectly fine to dean movies was made on my phone which is about 30 videos- so this works!! it’s just much more difficult and harder to polish up…. I personally make amvs much quicker and cleaner on my laptop.. and noticed a big big difference in my own quality since I switched….. NOW I use capcut since it’s free and my laptop can run it without any issues. I’m genuinely very impressed with it as a free software- lots of really good tools and effects, I find it so easy to alter colours and subtitle as well!! which I struggled with on other platforms!! very user friendly too!!! would be very beginner friendly!!

PLANNING is my absolute favourite part of making an amv…… normally I hear a song and can very easily picture shot by shot how I would amv it - once I’ve got the song and general theme I’m going for- I normally print out the lyrics and annotate them - jotting down timings, voiceovers, season, arcs and clips.. I can sometimes skip this if it’s just a simple video but if it’s anything complicated I HAVE to write it down. I also find it’s easier to make a video have a ‘point’ if I do this??? idk.. I think it helps but idk if this is something everybody does :)

there’s the spn transcript searcher which is very useful as well if there’s a line you’re looking for but can’t remember where it’s from!!

and of course homeofthenutty which is great for thumbnail stuff!!

editing things:

honestly… I don’t think there’s a wrong way to do this if you’ve got a really fabulous idea….. timings are the trickiest thing to get the hang of- I do dashes on my printed plan to kind of show where I need cuts and if it’s fast cuts I write down how long each clip should be so it looks cleaner. I find that my videos don’t really look finished until they’re subtitled either- so that always helps!! everybody kind of does that differently so definitely play around until you find a style you like!!

I wouldn’t worry too much about colouring when you’re just starting out- sometimes I find that filters can be distracting but I know others who swear by them so that’s just personal preference!! I really just tweak certain clips to make them less saturated or green-looking….

for posting:

I really recommend posting simultaneously on tumblr and youtube!! I have videos with basically no notes on tumblr but did really well on yt and vice versa!! the yt algorithm can be funny- I find that as long as it has a custom thumbnail and a few comments it does alright!! on tumblr- I always link the yt video since the tumblr player doesn’t always work for everybody…. also don’t be afraid to use taglists!!! I’m sure your mutuals would love to be tagged and please definitely tag me in anything you make!!! genuinely owe so much to my mutuals for their support 🫶🫶 and also don’t be afraid to self-reblog!! chronological dashboard means people WILL miss things if they aren’t online!!!

but genuinely the most important thing is to have fun…… I seriously love amvs…. I think they’re the best thing in the world and spend probably at least half an hour minimum a day watching amvs…….. and we need more of them!!!!! so thank you!!! and please please tag me when you make one!!! and feel free to dm me if you need anything at all!!! like all technical aspects aside… an amv made with so much love and to a fabulous song is a gift to the world…… 🫶🫶

Title: Caesar Shift WC: 900 Episode: Rise (4 x 01)

He wonders what secret decoder rings go for these days. He wonders what cereal box tops he should have been collecting and how likely it is there’s some kind of buy one, get one offer he can send away for. He wonders if anyone still ships things cash on delivery. These are the burning questions he has because he sure could use a secret decoder ring. He could use two of them.

It’s not really new a gap in the wardrobe, though it’s news that there are any gaps in her wardrobe, at least. He looks back on the last three years and it’s a simple task to pick out all the moments between them that might have gone so differently if the two of them had had a pair of wearable, his-and-hers Alberti disks.

The past is the past, though. That, interestingly enough, is a two-way message that’s coming in loud and clear. Three months are gone. She said she’d call. She didn’t, and he’s still mad. They lay all those cards on the table, and in the same frustrated motion, they sweep it clear. The past is the past, and there are new rules of engagement. That’s why they could use a pair of decoder rings, to sort out what that actually means—to get a grip on what means what in this brave new world.

Brave is one word for it—for what he seems to be now. Reckless is another. Stupid . . . Well, he could go on, but he’s not entirely sure what any given word for it might mean right now. So he plays against type. He vaults right over the word for whatever it is he seems to be now and looks at his actions.

He’s done with backing down, chickening out, hiding behind the idea that he’s respecting her boundaries, going at her pace, following her lead. Whatever a spin of the concentric rings might call it, he’s done with it. He learned his lesson at her hospital bedside, and he’ll never get the bitter taste of that unasked question off the tip of his tongue.

You don’t remember . . .

But he’s done with that. Whether it’s anger or the decades he’s aged over these last three months—the decades he aged watching her die in that ambulance—he is simply done ceding ground. Whatever the secret decoder ring might have to say about the source of his newfound whatever, satisfaction is the word that emerges from the cipher when her face goes blank with surprise when he cracks open the new rulebook for her.

He asks about Josh and just keeps asking. He confronts her about freezing up on the job, about the way she’s teetering on the edge of the rabbit hole. He tells her—in not-very-sophisticated code—to cut the crap with the magical thinking about being okay, having leads in her mother’s case, just needing time. He debuts the new Richard Castle from God Knows Where, and there’s a next-level thrill in the challenge accepted narrowing of her eyes.

He doesn’t have words for the shift in her any more than he has them for the sea change in himself. She . . . talks. It’s halting at first, and it hurts. Even when the glare of his own anger is most blinding, God, he can see how it hurts, and still she does it.

He hasn’t kept count of the words. He almost wishes he had. He almost wishes that his brain, for once, wouldn’t inexorably edit on the fly, because he’s absolutely certain that the number of words she speaks in a row have set some kind of record, and still he’d like the exact count.

But more than that—more than even a word count to crow over—he’d like a secret decoder ring. Because she says she really, really liked Josh, but it wasn’t enough, and that last part is too familiar to be a coincidence, isn’t it? It’s the mystery phrase from that he’s turned inside out and upside down in his mind since the night she’d told him they were over.

It means—it has to mean—that she’s looking for enough, doesn’t it? It has to be a gauntlet thrown. Or is it his version of magical thinking to believe that beneath the surface, she’s telling him that she is in the market for enough, or she will be once she addresses every damned thing he told her was going on with her that very same night. Crawled inside her mother’s murder and didn’t come out? Check. Serial hiding in nowhere relationships? Checkity check.

He definitely wants a secret decoder ring to confirm that she’s just more or less said he was right about everything. She’s just more or less called him out for being chicken shit when she demanded an answer from him—What about you, Rick?

So here they are, he a man of action, she a woman of not-so-few words. It’s a flip flop, a topsy turvy, a Freaky Friday—Jodie Foster vintage, thank you very much. There’s a word for what this is, for what they are, for what they’ll be in times to come. There’s a word for it, but he needs a secret decoder ring to figure out what it is.

…well the whole episode deals with breaking down doors or barging through doors or at least coming through a door in some way:  1. Jack enters Derek’s workshop invited. 2. Patience’s father standing at a door as the talk: twice, at her room, and later on, as she leaves the house. 3.  Jack breaking the door of the rehab center Kaia is institutionalized in. 4. The sunken boat entrances: as out intrepid heroes go in, and later the angels. 5. The door the the other world itself. 6. Jody opens the door to welcome Patience as she walks towards her new adventure and purpose in life. Beautiful.

10. “You go now, you choose this life, you don’t come back”.

And you know what? This is awesome.

First thing, he doesn’t cast her out, this is a father telling his daughter that there is no coming back from this choice of hers to normality. He is not angry, not disappointed. He is worried. And last but not least - she is going towards the SUPERNATURAL, and the unknown, to do GOOD IN THIS WORLD. She is doing an altruistic move, not a selfish one like Sam (nothing against self-care here, just facts). THESE ALL OR OPPOSITES TO WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN JOHN AND SAM.  They are showing us HOW TO PARENT RIGHT.  As opposed to suffocating your child within your own norms (Sam), to a child making his own choice, and as to say, “spreading her wings”.  In no way this is a callous, cheap call-back. This is, in my opinion, a very well done analogy, showing a different way with words. A similar situation, worlds apart. Pun intended.

Also, the thematic of POWERS CAN BE USED FOR GOOD EVEN IF YOU ARE THE SON OF SATAN is so refreshing, and fuckin’ mature I’m SO PROUD OF MY HEROES, SOSOSO MUCH. I’m so proud of SHOW for getting tot his point!

That moment when Dean draws a loaded gun at Kaia to threaten her into cooperation: EVIL. And that’s the point. In my opinion, he just got so hard slapped in the face by reality, about Mary still being alive, and him NOT going after her (as opposed to when dad gone missing), that he couldn’t really see much difference between right and wrong. OR, he was well conscious of himself, knows he is damn frightening as he is, and with a gun - any puny human other than Sam would piss himself. So he uses this in his advantage. Would shoot a foot though, if he really had too. OR BOTH, which is very much a Dean thing.

Hi Naomi! I was wondering your process or if there is an efficient way to find the right scene/expression/body language to use for a graphic. With Supernatural at 250 episodes now, I'm glad we have so much material to work with, but I don't know how best to find the pieces I need.

Hey anon!

Oh God, I feel this deep in my soul. I know exactly what you mean. It’s awesome to be able to have so much material at our disposal, but at the same time, it makes for a lot of work when deciding on what screencaps to use for graphics. Tbh, it’s probably the hardest and most time consuming part of the process. 

There’s no one way to go about it really, you kinda just have to figure out what works best for you. When I’m planning out my graphics, I like to have a source of inspiration first in order to figure out what type of screencap I’ll need. Like, do I want a broody, emotional Dean looking down? Do I want a worn, tired Cas looking up to the sky? Do I want Sam in a fight stance with his gun at the ready? I usually look through my collection of screencaps first to see if I already have something that I want to use. If I don’t, then I’ll usually google or search through tumblr the type of thing I’m looking for. So maybe I’m looking for a screencap of Dean crying, but I can’t remember an exact episode of when he’s doing that. So I’ll google search something like “dean winchester + crying” and I’ll go through the results to find a scene from an episode I’m looking for. If you dig deep enough, you can usually find caps or gifs or edits with the episode labeled. 

After I find the right episode, I then go to a screencap sight (like screencapped.net, homeofthenutty, or supernaturalfansoline) and pull my screencaps from there (or if it’s a more recent episode or there’s no perfect moment I’m satisfied with, I’ll screencap it myself). And as I’m searching for the right cap, I’ll usually stumble upon other caps that are totally irrelevant to the current graphic I’m making, but I save them anyway bc they could be of good use in the future. You kinda develop an eye for what caps are best for graphics over time. Even as I’m watching episodes, I’ll be like “ooohhh, that would be a good screencap to use in a graphic” or “omfg, that scene would make a great gifset.” It just sorta becomes second nature. 

So yeah, the process isn’t always as efficient as I’d like it to be unfortunately. It’s always good to have some patience when it comes to this lmao. And y’know, you can always ask your friends or go into a net chat if you find a gif or something somewhere and be like “yo does anybody know what episode this is from?” There’s always gonna be somebody that knows. I like to think I have a fairly descent memory when it comes to knowing the episodes, but that’s definitelyyyy not always true lol.

I hope me sorta sharing my thought process helps you out a little bit, at least! Don’t be afraid to ask others if you’re stuck and use the resources at your disposal :) xx

Title: On the Horn WC: 1100 Episode: Dial M for Mayor (4 x 12)

The idea of him in therapy makes her laugh. It’s actually a little bit alarming. She’s days away from her next appointment with Burke, and yet she’s genuinely alarmed that she might have to bail mid-session, because she suddenly cannot get the laugh-inducing—if not downright laughable—idea of Richard Castle in therapy out of her mind.

She imagines Burke trying to pin him down to anything—to a single, linear train of thought and failing miserably. She envisions the good, eternally patient doctor breaking down, rending his yellow pad in two, storming out in fury, because the expanding universe of Richard Castle’s psyche simply cannot be shrunk.

It’s not the kindest fantasy she’s entertained. It’s not the healthiest, but good God, being more is hard, often humiliating work, and the negative associations she’s built up around that man, that office, those fifty minutes a week are intense. So who couldn’t use a therapy-related laugh?

So she follows that dangerous, zig-zagging train of thought for a while. She chuckles to herself, then at herself as she contemplates him seeking out therapy at $4.99 a minute. It’s a far more likely scenario, she thinks, than him jogging one knee, watching the clock, giving a master class in evasion, deflection, denial in some wildly comfortable chair in a high-up midtown office. It seems downright likely that he hasn’t just “heard” about lost souls tithing at the temple of the Goddess of Good Listening.

The idea pricks at her. It’s the source of a sudden slow leak in the balloon of her laughter. She doesn’t love the idea of some woman, bored out of her mind and just looking to cover her bills, being the one who hears about the toll Martha takes on the loft’s infrastructure, or what stage of grief Alexis is in, two months and two weeks out from her breakup with Ashley. She certainly doesn’t love the idea of his daily download session all wrapped up in the kind of sexy talk that has left the tips of Ryan’s ears permanently red ever since he drew the short straw and wound up going through the Dial-a-Goddess call logs.

That falls firmly under laughable. It’s decidedly not laugh-inducing for her to be . . . what? . . . jealous? of a hypothetical woman on an imaginary phone sex line that he might have vented to once upon a time? It’s ridiculous and true—or at least truth adjacent.

It’s curious. She’s laughed herself out at the idea of Richard Castle in therapy—in one kind of therapy or another—and it’s left her quiet inside. It’s left her with a wholly unexpected moment of clarity, even with the bottle-fly buzz of jealousy, possessiveness, insecurity trying to draw her attention off.

She wonders now—seriously wonders—if he’s ever been in therapy. She thinks about the course of his, yes, very privileged life, and it’s like constellations winking into existence on a planetarium version of the night sky. She sees all the well-known points of inflection laid out. There’s Kyra leaving, there’s Meredith. There’s Alexis and single fatherhood, informal at first, and then quite formal. There’s Martha careening in and out of his life, his home, over the years.

And then there’s . . . lately.

She’s a few days out from her next appointment with Burke. It’s the sweet spot of the week in some ways. Everything has settled, more or less, from her last session. The jagged tears have trailed off into a few pooling at the corners of her eyes when she lies staring up at the ceiling for a little while each night. The razor-wire conviction that she will never—never—go back and subject herself to that again has dulled, its coils around her center have loosened. She is able, when she can breath through everything, to see progress.

Part of that progress, though, has been taking a giant step out of herself to think about time—to think about lately and not so lately and the fact that a number of the most traumatic things that have happened have not happened to her alone.

There’s Roy—their beloved Captain. That’s a loss they’ve all suffered. It’s a damnably complicated story that they cannot, of necessity, untangle together.

There’s the shooting. Her shooting, as her mind tends to snarl, and it’s true enough. She has the twinging, aching scars to claim it for herself. But that happened to all of them, too. That is happening to all of them, because who knows when they’ll come back for? Who knows which of the people she loves they might cut down to send her a message?

There’s this case. Oh, there’s so much in between. There’s the summer and silence and this land mine of a secret there between them, because there’s progress and there’s progress, and she is nowhere near ready to process his words to the dying.

But right now, most of all, there’s this case and the fact that she has blown apart the career of an innocent man. She’s been the instrument of his undoing, and in the course of it, she has hurt him—Castle. She has inflicted yet another wound and cannot see what she could or should have done differently at any point.

There’s a lot. For all of them. For both of them. For him, and she really wonders if he’s ever been in therapy.

She’s not content with that. Even though it’s late and things are raw between them. She’s not content to wonder alone as she stares up at the ceiling with one or two tears pooling at the corners of her eyes.

She has no script or point of entry into the conversation. She can’t just ask him, out of the blue, if he’s ever been in therapy, though that’s what’s on her mind. It’s exactly what’s on the tip of her tongue, but she cannot ask that. So she’s silent. She’s so silent for so long that she thinks she might have to bail, mid-session. She might have to claim butt dial or bed dial or whatever dial.

He’s the one that salvages things. With his mind like an unending ping-pong match, he leaps into the stream of her consciousness.
