There are few things as wodehousian as that weird period in the 1800s where several nations were looking to hire royals to become their princes/kings/emperors.
#Belgium Mexico Argentina the first three that come to mind#it is so funny to imagine like the job ad in the newspaper#nation full of promise looks for young second or third son of royal family#for sovereign duties#Spanish and French required#Experience valued

Saw this and couldn't help thinking that they didn't but...
#thiam#Yes I already know English but I added it to Duolingo just to get perfect lessons more easily when they're required for quests#the main language I learn there is Spanish#then there's Greek (modern because they don't have ancient Greek)#and Italian (learned even before English) is for prononciation quests because both English and Spanish have sounds that are beyond me lol#(in case you wonder my first language is French)

I hope more qsmp creators get some sort of subtitles for their streams past the qlobal translater. Whether it's something like Baghera's or the extension that Forever uses- or a combo of things like Badboyhalo. Especially the english creators. I think only Bad has the translator extension?
#qsmp#murky mumbles#love Bad's#he has base subtitles which are viewable on vods though you can't translate them#they are still super useful#he has the translator/sub extension which translates everything he says but is only available live#but you can choose which language it's in with of english/french/spanish/portuguese as options#and ofc the qlobal translator for when he's on qsmp#Baghera's is also great. very accurate#part of the video itself so even if the twitch vod gets deleted the subs are still there#but you can't choose the language it translates into#plus requires manual changing from the streamer#but It just translates things so well i love it#also rip gabi has the translater extension but i've never had it work for me on her channel#it's always either not working at all#stuck on one sentence#or around 10 minutes behind#like literally 10 minutes behind#Cellbit's work just fine and Forever's are 50/50 but dont have 10 minute delay when they DO appear for me#so I think it's something on Gabi's end

Watching you blog in Portuguese as somebody who understands Spanish is so funny to me. I comprehend a good amount of what you’re saying, and then something distinctly Portuguese comes through and I just have to to “ah, well, shit” -whataboutyouisamascot
(let me break my pt only rule today) @whataboutyouisamascot
Yeah, that's the thing about romance languages. We all sort of pretty much understand each other without too much difficulty. Especially Spanish and Portuguese, they are so so incredibly similar (since Portuguese did in fact originate from spanish), that you hardly need to change anything aside from certain terminations, etc.
I do see how wild it must be for someone who knows Spanish but isn't too familiar with Portuguese/isn't Spanish native to read random pt comments and stuff hahaha.
#out of the 4 of us (portuguese spanish french and italian)#french is the most different (?) and it requires a little bit more of mental gymnastics#but since most of us here study french anyways (which i continued after high-school) it's kinda chill#(also i know that romanian is considered a romance language too but it has so many other influences that i super stands out)#(italian speakers would probably understand it better than us westerners. still there are a lot of common words/roots)#Languages are fun!!#darya answers#speak your language day

i wanna take a law class so much this semester i took 4 years of law in high school so i consider myself somewhat of an expert and this is literally like an introduction course so itd just be free credits which is exactly what i need but it clashes with like 3 of my other subjects at once which is bad kind of
#also i would like to attend like .. french or italian or spanish or portuguese lectures ideally#but every lecturer requires some sort of final test or oral exam to prove that i actually speak the language what if i just wanna vibe#i would confidently say im b1 in both spanish & french but only via like reading & listening speaking is where it becomes a problem#mp

”being bilingual is a privilege” is the most anerican and tumblr take to exist
#wtf do you MEAN???#learning a language is difficult but barely a privilege. it’s a privilege to have access to learning institutions#it’s a privilege to be able to pay for lessons#sure.#BUT it is not a privilege to learn a language. yall have duolingo. the internet is almost free#get friends who are from different countries and cultures and languages#you don’t have to travel to learn a language.#you can learn your quirky ass weeb japanese only through anime#and then when you tryto use it it might be a big awkwies but watever#you can learn french by watching minecraft youtubers in french.#you can learn spanish by hanging out w hispanic ppl.#is it difficult? yes learning a language (especially as ab adult) will always require effort.#but it is not inaccessible to the point that having access to learning a language is a privilege#yall monolinguals just want an excuse and feel like a victim for being monolingual.#and it’s not your fault that monolingualism is common in english speaking countries.#bc globalist language norms etc.#but. be for fucking for real PLS.

I have to be so honest I think for what Duolingo is and what it offers it’s wayyyyy overly criticised
#and I’m so sick of it!!!#considering it’s completely free and offers such a large variety of languages#languages where it could be near impossible to find any other rescource that’s even half as good as Duolingo#‘here’s why you should stop using Duolingo’ okay can you provide me any other app/website as accessible that teaches Scottish Gaelic?#and also it has to even attempt to include all aspects#speaking listening writing and reading#like Duolingo attempts to do#there are some apps out there that require a payment#only offer like spanish French and German#and are actually worse at teaching you those languages#also I’m sick of the whole ‘it will never get you fluent!!!’#like yeah we know??#but it’s also important to have things to teach the basics#and try and make it fun too#also I don’t think I’ve ever even seen Duolingo advertise itself as smth to get you fluent#which I’ve definitely seen other apps do#okay rant over

🕸y’know while i get *some* of the criticisms that the mcu borrowed some of miles’ stuff for mcu peter (mostly ned sorta being ganke), i really don’t understand the “he speaks spanish!!1!” bit tbh. like. yeah. he’s a high schooler in the ny school system. he’s gotta take another language to graduate if he wants his regents degree. several years if he wants a higher diploma or did since uh y’know. and spanish is probably the most useful. so like. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#i don't live in nyc but i do live in the state and that's just. a requirement lol.#i wish i'd done spanish rather than french tbh but also i barely remember any french anyways at this point soooooooooooooooo#ooc#(and idk most of the other stuff that comes up other than the ned and ganke thing is just... peter being brought more to the modern day?)#(i do hope we see him take up photography in the new movies though)#(even if with social media and so on they don't have the same in as older versions of the character aka selling the pictures to jj)

Existing is cool. We all exist in some capacity.
I hope you do well in the seal of biliteracy test! I personally have another few years before I need to take it, and that will be in French most likely.
Hopefully if I do write a fanfic you will just end up finding it in the wild. Not likely but it could happen
Anyway, I hope that you start to feel more human later.
From⚙️
Existing is pretty cool! And thank you. I have no clue what my scoring is gonna be on that one, because I know my speaking section was...subpar at best, but maybe the other 3 sections were good enough to offset that? Who knows!
At least you know that it's a possibility! I didn't even know the seal or the test was a thing until like a month ago when I got an email like "hey quil sign up to take this test you took enough foreign language credits for it" like...you mean the courses I took...over a year ago??
just because I have an associated in spanish doesn't mean I know what I'm doing
And even if its unlikely for me to find your fic in the wild, I can still hope! I mean, i'll never know whether or not it was yours, but still! But yeah unlikely. I don't read a lot of fanfic, actually. Like 95% of the time I read a fic it's to support a mutual who wrote it, not because I particularly felt like reading fics. Ironic considering I'm a fic writer, but true.
Thank you for the well wishes though! I'm not particularly concerned with feeling human, but I understand and appreciate the sentiment, and I wish the same for you!
#quil's queries#⚙️ nonsie#i took 2 french classes once upon a time#because for my spanish degree I was required to take a second foreign language too#but my asl didn't count#so there was one semester I was taking spanish and french and asl (3 foreign languages) all at the same time#I. would not recommend doing that#i now know practically zero french and my spanish and french got mixed up for months after that#the asl was fine though. i think a sign language and a spoken language can be learned together a lot easier#so that part wasn't bad#it was the spanish and french at the same time that fucked me up#but I'd like to learn french one day#that way I know the two. what are they called. not universal#but basically certain things in foreign languages are required to have a translation to either french or english#so I'd like to know both#oh this is gonna bug me hang on gonna ask my dad#oh apparently I was right! french and english are considered the universal languages#and on the ship (he was in the coast guard) it needed to be in either english or french and the local language#so. there's that

my genuine guess for the first one is that it has something to do with bisexuals at the doctor getting prescribed antibiotics…? I don’t get the joke
genuine guess for the second one is something like “the problem is the monolinguists” with the guy labeled as “you” I think??? then the bottom text is something like “a casual conversation” or something?
i hate when i send someone a meme in another language and they're like "uhm... translate? 😒" fucker i sent you a meme where 90% of the words have an english cognate and/or you don't need to know what they're saying to find it funny. can you at least TRY
#some people aren’t that good at figuring out cross-language jokes#because sometimes jokes don’t translate well#plus not every school had only spanish as an option for the required second language#AND FRENCH I FORGOT THE FIRST ONE WAS IN FRENCH#I learned a bit of japanese and even then I have nowhere to even practice it so my skills have deteriorated significantly since 2020#reboob#stfu kebs

spent an hour and a half in a spanish class today despite not speaking a word of spanish so that was a fun time aslgkskgkdk
#ykw i was the comic relief and everyone got a good laugh out of it so honestly i’m not even upset about it#just inconvenienced bc now i have to take an early morning socioling class to fulfill the requirement this would have#alas#honestly though it was kinda fun#and apparently everyone else actually thought i understood spanish#so looks like those extremely rudimentary french latin and italian skills do come in handy for something!#like i think i can confidently say i understood about a third of what’s as happening so like i’ll take it

"Advocating For Palestine" - a free 16-page booklet for Pro-Palestine allies, recommended by journalist bisan (wizard_bisan1). A basic primer.
Available Languages: English, Arabic, German, French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese.
Link to download and view page:
Edit (June 15, 2024): This is an old post. The reblogs have been turned off for at least *months*. The reason is that, have come to the conclusion that it just isn't worth it to have such a flawed primer as an introduction.
A lot of the pamplet is true. However, there are parts of the pamphlet that are misinformative, requiring critical thinking and familiarity to recognize. And am disagree with the methods and priorities.
(e.g. like synonymizing indigeneity with "who was there first" and using a conspiracy theory to prove it. In actuality, indigeneity is a relation to colonialism as colonized vs colonizer. decolonize palestine addressed Israeli claims of indigeneity here much much better than the pamphlet did - identifying the claims as unnecessary *excuses* for genocide instead).
The primer also focuses on the idea of arguing against zionists as an important part of activism and as a way of "going against misinformation".
But as it stands right now: it is much more important to educate oneself, yet shut off engagement with zionists and their propaganda. To then instead focus on the affected. Palestinians. Meaning, not prioritizing your time on zionists.
Every information requires critical thinking sure, but of this primer's levels of flaws and different priority - isn't it better to just check the other resources in our pinned post instead? or better yet, the information of any major trustworthy Palestinian source and blogger even.

i think it would be such a flex if i became fluent in spanish (i’ve studied it in school for like 6 years but it’s kinda plopped from my brain at this point) and applied myself better in french and learned more swahili so i can say i know four languages
#spanish is easier bc i was exposed to it younger?????#but also i understand some swahili bc my mom speaks it so i get the pronounciation and basic greetings#and french i’m doing as a college requirement but i’d like to be fluent

if you could learn 2 languages, but 1 of them was not 1 that you planned to use much for communication with other people, what would you choose?
for my language that i would use for communication, i'd say japanese (which i'm learning right now! :D)
for my non communicative language there are a few options. i might choose russian bc theres a lot of russian novels and media i'd like to read/consume and be able to experience in the original language. alternatively i might choose german because it'd be interesting to compare its similarities with english as another west germanic language. alternatively alternatively i might choose chinese to learn a language with no tenses (although learning all those kanji and their slight differences with japanese kanji might kill me tbh). but this is probably the hardest one so maybe not.
#most likely i would learn russian i think#i considered putting french there#i took it in high school instead of spanish for like 3 good years#of course they were required years but i genuinely enjoyed it until my teacher fuckin died#which was a year in and i kinda lost most my enthusiam after#this was a rly interesting question tho#languages are very cool#even if you don't wanna learn a language i recommend taking a linguistics course#its really quite interesting and thought provoking#thanks for the fun ask#language#linguistics
