Worldbuilding idea: Sapient alien species who’s concept of gender isn’t based on sex, but instead around epigentic expression.

The Veloso(Darwins): Are an asexually reproducing species who self clone, thus only one biological sex. But due to coming from an ocean planet with highly variable micro climates, biomes, and ecosystems; like most life on their planet, they have varying “forms” adapted for distinct environmental conditions. These forms are determined by environmental conditions their egg develops in, though often progeny will carry some traits of their parent’s “form” due to epigenetic inheritance. All individuals have the genetics for all forms, it just matters which genes get turned on. It’s also not a strict divide between these “forms”, with many individuals having a mix of expressed characteristics to one degree or another.

*they are technically capable of sexual reproduction, but that’s a rare event that only occurs when populations are large and stable.*

Thus their concept analogous to gender is based on these “forms”. But like our concept of gender, it also doesn’t necessarily have a casual relationship with their bodies, but a correlative one. So trans and nonbinary people exist.

Hope I get to use them at some point for sci-if, I have them planned currently for my space fantasy Bubblegum Hyperdrive story, if I ever write it that is.

It might feel like your gender is put on a shelf for display, which may cause you to feel proud and euphoric, or it might cause you to feel cold and vulnerable. In short, you are space-gendered, but it feels bottled up, for whatever reason.
