There comes a point when you are doing too much research for fanfic, and that point is probably way before you’re looking up the interactions between the Cocos and Nazcas plates in order to decide where you would put a fictional island if you want it off the coast of Colombia.
#somebody take the internet away from me#because I am about ten minutes from taking this map of the Teri if plates and using it to map out the Disney Universe#because where would Atlantis be? with all the earthquakes it has to be on a fault line#Beuaty and the Beast takes place in rural France#but what about Frozen? Arandelle is vaguely Norway but is it a part of Norway? or next to it?#Tangled is sorta in Germany (even though their kingdom has a Spanish name)#plus thanks to the TV show we know there’s other kingdoms around Corona that are not Germany#Jesus Christ the Eurasian plate is huge#is this map accurate? it can’t actually be that big#is this why that woman from Amsterdam was so baffled by the idea of earthquakes?#ANYWAY!#this map says that the South American plate is moving west aka converging with the plates immediately west of it#and this map shows an underwater mountain range right where the South American plate meets the Nazcas plate soooooo#that’s where I would put a fictional island#just a little North east of Isla Isabela#it would be roughly triangular#relatively protected from hurricanes but would have frequent earthquakes#hmmmmm technically speaking that’s north of the equator and on the east side of the Pacific Ocean Gyre#so the water at the western beaches would still be pretty cool#the eastern beaches would be warmer#ok I’ve figured out the geography of my fictional Disney kingdom#now…#to figure out the actual plot of this fic#oh and that tag up there should say tetonic plates not Teri If plates#damn autocorrect

gathering words to add to my proto lang by looking at what kind of words natural proto langs had. because sometimes i worry about making words that are too specific and that would make more sense having been derived from something else. but apparently proto-austronesian had a word that meant "food particles caught between the teeth" so. sure. fuck it. my proto lang can have a word that means horizon then
#this lang is gonna be set in a different world/universe than my other conlangs#this time im going for a south east asian seafaring culture type of vibe#cus most of my fantasy cultures so far have been set in european-style mountains hdskj#but yeah i think in this context especially itd make sense for them to have a simple word for horizon#ramblings

Vision of the New Temple
1 In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the selfsame day the hand of the Lord was upon me, and brought me thither. 2 In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south. 3 And he brought me thither, and, behold, there was a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate. 4 And the man said unto me, Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall shew thee; for to the intent that I might shew them unto thee art thou brought hither: declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel. 5 And behold a wall on the outside of the house round about, and in the man’s hand a measuring reed of six cubits long by the cubit and an hand breadth: so he measured the breadth of the building, one reed; and the height, one reed.
6 Then came he unto the gate which looketh toward the east, and went up the stairs thereof, and measured the threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad; and the other threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad. 7 And every little chamber was one reed long, and one reed broad; and between the little chambers were five cubits; and the threshold of the gate by the porch of the gate within was one reed. 8 He measured also the porch of the gate within, one reed. 9 Then measured he the porch of the gate, eight cubits; and the posts thereof, two cubits; and the porch of the gate was inward. 10 And the little chambers of the gate eastward were three on this side, and three on that side; they three were of one measure: and the posts had one measure on this side and on that side. 11 And he measured the breadth of the entry of the gate, ten cubits; and the length of the gate, thirteen cubits. 12 The space also before the little chambers was one cubit on this side, and the space was one cubit on that side: and the little chambers were six cubits on this side, and six cubits on that side. 13 He measured then the gate from the roof of one little chamber to the roof of another: the breadth was five and twenty cubits, door against door. 14 He made also posts of threescore cubits, even unto the post of the court round about the gate. 15 And from the face of the gate of the entrance unto the face of the porch of the inner gate were fifty cubits. 16 And there were narrow windows to the little chambers, and to their posts within the gate round about, and likewise to the arches: and windows were round about inward: and upon each post were palm trees.
17 Then brought he me into the outward court, and, lo, there were chambers, and a pavement made for the court round about: thirty chambers were upon the pavement. 18 And the pavement by the side of the gates over against the length of the gates was the lower pavement. 19 Then he measured the breadth from the forefront of the lower gate unto the forefront of the inner court without, an hundred cubits eastward and northward.
20 And the gate of the outward court that looked toward the north, he measured the length thereof, and the breadth thereof. 21 And the little chambers thereof were three on this side and three on that side; and the posts thereof and the arches thereof were after the measure of the first gate: the length thereof was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits. 22 And their windows, and their arches, and their palm trees, were after the measure of the gate that looketh toward the east; and they went up unto it by seven steps; and the arches thereof were before them. 23 And the gate of the inner court was over against the gate toward the north, and toward the east; and he measured from gate to gate an hundred cubits.
24 After that he brought me toward the south, and behold a gate toward the south: and he measured the posts thereof and the arches thereof according to these measures. 25 And there were windows in it and in the arches thereof round about, like those windows: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits. 26 And there were seven steps to go up to it, and the arches thereof were before them: and it had palm trees, one on this side, and another on that side, upon the posts thereof. 27 And there was a gate in the inner court toward the south: and he measured from gate to gate toward the south an hundred cubits.
28 And he brought me to the inner court by the south gate: and he measured the south gate according to these measures; 29 and the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, according to these measures: and there were windows in it and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad. 30 And the arches round about were five and twenty cubits long, and five cubits broad. 31 And the arches thereof were toward the utter court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof: and the going up to it had eight steps.
32 And he brought me into the inner court toward the east: and he measured the gate according to these measures. 33 And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, were according to these measures: and there were windows therein and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad. 34 And the arches thereof were toward the outward court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof, on this side, and on that side: and the going up to it had eight steps.
35 And he brought me to the north gate, and measured it according to these measures; 36 the little chambers thereof, the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, and the windows to it round about: the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits. 37 And the posts thereof were toward the utter court; and palm trees were upon the posts thereof, on this side, and on that side: and the going up to it had eight steps. 38 And the chambers and the entries thereof were by the posts of the gates, where they washed the burnt offering.
39 And in the porch of the gate were two tables on this side, and two tables on that side, to slay thereon the burnt offering and the sin offering and the trespass offering. 40 And at the side without, as one goeth up to the entry of the north gate, were two tables; and on the other side, which was at the porch of the gate, were two tables. 41 Four tables were on this side, and four tables on that side, by the side of the gate; eight tables, whereupon they slew their sacrifices. 42 And the four tables were of hewn stone for the burnt offering, of a cubit and an half long, and a cubit and an half broad, and one cubit high: whereupon also they laid the instruments wherewith they slew the burnt offering and the sacrifice. 43 And within were hooks, an hand broad, fastened round about: and upon the tables was the flesh of the offering.
44 And without the inner gate were the chambers of the singers in the inner court, which was at the side of the north gate; and their prospect was toward the south: one at the side of the east gate having the prospect toward the north. 45 And he said unto me, This chamber, whose prospect is toward the south, is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the house. 46 And the chamber whose prospect is toward the north is for the priests, the keepers of the charge of the altar: these are the sons of Zadok among the sons of Levi, which come near to the Lord to minister unto him. 47 So he measured the court, an hundred cubits long, and an hundred cubits broad, foursquare; and the altar that was before the house.
48 And he brought me to the porch of the house, and measured each post of the porch, five cubits on this side, and five cubits on that side: and the breadth of the gate was three cubits on this side, and three cubits on that side. 49 The length of the porch was twenty cubits, and the breadth eleven cubits; and he brought me by the steps whereby they went up to it: and there were pillars by the posts, one on this side, and another on that side. — Ezekiel 40 | Authorized King James Version (AKJV) The Holy Bible: Authorized King James Version; Cambridge University Press, the Crown’s patentee in the UK. Conditional military assistance
Development cooperation and security assistance must be conditional on adherence to the universal humanist values of the Enlightenment.
Assistance must not be given to a dictatorial regime that oppresses its population. The United States' unconditional support for Israel, which practices an apartheid regime against the Palestinians, is not right. This assistance should have been accompanied by conditions in return. France's support for Sahel countries against Islamist guerrillas has not been accompanied by a demand for democracy and human development. US protection of Saudi Arabia against Iran and Iraq was done despite the fact that Saudi Arabia practises discrimination between men and women, torture, monarchical dictatorship, and so on. In Gabon, France supported the Bongo dynasty in power to enable the country to prosper, but in exchange no democratic or human progress was demanded. As a result, the Gabonese have turned their backs on France. In Mali, no human measures were demanded in exchange for military assistance; the Malians saw that it protected the dictator in power and turned to the Wagner militias. This is creating resentment among the population. It's a betrayal of the universal values of the UDHR.
In Taiwan, Ukraine or South Korea, Western protection has its requirements in terms of elections, human progress and the fight against corruption. These countries have made tremendous human progress: they are true democracies respecting human rights, with real elections, no persecution of women or LGBT+, they don't attack their neighbours, etc. So it's possible.
On the night of April 13 to 14, 2024, Iran launched a salvo of 300 missiles and drones on Israel with the aim of killing as many people as possible, without being able to discriminate between civilians and soldiers. This is a war crime. If Iran or its allies in the Middle East were to repeat such an attack, Israel would need military assistance from Western countries to defend its population. This assistance must be conditional: an end to the massacres in Gaza, an end to the violence in the occupied territories, and an end to the apartheid regime against the Palestinians.
If a regime is backed without adhering to these values, what will the consequences be? Unconditional support for Israel has also led to support for the Israeli government, which massacres Gazans in total impunity.
These conditions must be negotiated publicly. The violence must stop. When the West intervenes, there must be security, schools, health, development and prosperity. Otherwise, there will be great disappointment, and this will fuel people's turning away from the West.

Trying to explain what the fuck just happened in Lankan politics today.
The leftist party has won 159 seats out of 218 in the Parliamentary elections. The single biggest landslide win since we broke from the British and achieved universal franchise in 1948.
Any party achieving a super majority in the executive and legislative is, objectively speaking, bad. It disables checks and balances, which is a catastrophic thing for any democracy, and the only two other times it's happened for us has irrevocably eroded the fabric of civic rights and democratic freedom. Also, the reason the NPP won the North and East is that the colonized, genocided and subjugated people there have no faith in electoralism anymore. The way this government has engaged minority issues has been utterly abysmal and now they've been rewarded for it.
On the other hand:
The winners. Are all. Grassroots. Candidates.¹
We have voted out every single career criminal that's been barnacled into the Lankan political arena since before I've been alive. The fascist party has only three seats.² The other fascists didn't win a single seat. The neoliberal legacy party won none. There are only forty people in Parliament that represent any sort of dynastic political legacy. After 76 solid years of nothing but political dynasties.
This is barely five years after the Rajapaksas swept in and absolutely glutted the Parliament with their family members and cronies end to end.
This is the illegitimate interim government we had for most of the last 18 months. We literally, physically, chased the Rajapaksas out of the country and this fucking demon set up a puppet government just so he could finally sit in that goddamn chair and be the despot he'd always dreamed of in exchange for letting them all come back. He's now gone. His entire circle is gone.
THEY ARE ALL FUCKING GONE.
In US terms, just imagine that, five years from now, when Trump's GOP has control of everything, the entire GOP and the worst of the Dems are all purged from Congress and Senate, the Green Party in control of all three branches of government under a pro-union left-wing President and an unmarried female LGBT rights activist Vice President, and the Dems reduced to barely 20% of the House.
This is my anthropology professor. She joined politics from the small nascent leftist coalition to help keep the government accountable. She's now the Prime Minister and the most popular Parliamentary candidate in the nation's history. (Edit: She was knocked off first place by a dude in the final result. Boo.)
(On the other hand— the woman who helped make me a radical anarchist and literally helped write a book on political dissent and resistance...now is the state. Uh.)
But there are so many women in Parliament! We had the lowest female representation in a South Asian Parliament and some of them were from the list of seats reserved for parties rather than elected ones. Most were either anti-feminist conservative embarrassments, widows and daughters of elite politicians and neoliberal shills. It's still only an increase of a few percentage points (Edit: from the previous 5% to 10% in the final result!) but now we have elected academics, feminist advocates, activists! There Is a representative for Malaiyaha Tamils in the Central Province for the first time in history and it's a young woman! (Edit: now it's two female Malaiyaha MPS!!) This is the plantation community that still live in conditions closest to the slavery the British forced upon them two hundred years ago!
I'm like. Completely mindfucked. To be very very clear, the NPP coalition formed around the nucleus of the JVP that used to be communist but haven't been in 30 years, they're now just social democrats who are left of places like the US and UK, whose "left" is now center-right. They're only threatening to the Western mainstream media for some reason who can't stop bleating about how we have a "Marxist" government now. In reality, the actual chances for radical reform are still quite low, and the opportunity for further erosion is quite high with a super majority government regardless of affiliation.
On the other hand:
What the fuck.
Sometimes living through historical events is really damn amazing.
---
¹ Well, nearly. There are a few career politicians and a nepo baby but they aren't so bad either.
² Goddamn it, Baby Rajapaksa and Sri Lanka's answer to JD Vance have wormed their way in using the list of Constitutionally reserved party seats for non-elected members. FUCK the National List.
#five years ago i was working a news desk watching a band of violent ethnofascists known for genocide torture kidnappings and murder sweep in#and take control of the entire country#on the heels of the worst terrorist attack we've suffered that they orchestrated for this purpose#wondering how many of our colleagues would be safe#and watching the people that opposed them flee the country#i cannot tell you the enraging hopeless terror#and now#they're all gone#THEY'RE FUCKING GONE#sri lanka politics#sri lanka news#sri lanka protests#sri lankan parliamentary elections#sri lanka election 2024#anura kumara dissanayake#harini amarasuriya#feminism#leftism#world news#faith in humanity#power to the people#aragalaya#knee of huss#අරගලයට ජය!#අරගලය ජය

From Broke Student to Jet-Setter: Funding Your Southeast Asia Dream
Ah, the age of 19, fresh into my first year of university, and a burning desire to live life to the fullest—especially through the lens of travel. But let's face it, fellow students, there's a constant hurdle in our path, and it goes by the name of MONEY. Now, add London to the mix, and you've got yourself a budgeting puzzle that needs solving.
So, picture this: my boyfriend and I, in a fit of spontaneity, decided to embark on a seven-week escapade through Southeast Asia over the Christmas break. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, it is, but there's a catch. Southeast Asia might be the haven for cash-strapped college students, but saving up for such an adventure? That's a whole new challenge, my friends.
But fret not, because I'm here to spill the beans on how I managed to squirrel away enough funds for that epic seven-week Southeast Asia journey. And the best part? I did it all without sacrificing my social life and academic performance. So, stick around as I unravel the secrets to budgeting like a pro while savoring every moment of student life.
1. Buy your flights early and PLAN AHEAD
As the Christmas season approached, I found myself in possession of a surplus of approximately £500. This stash consisted of unspent funds from my student finance and the earnings I had squirreled away from my part-time job. It was a fortuitous situation, and my adventurous spirit began to stir. The idea of embarking on a journey to South East Asia started to take shape.
Our first order of business was to scout for flight prices to our desired destination, Bangkok. After some diligent research, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that a round trip from London to Bangkok would cost us around £400. A promising start, indeed!
However, as any seasoned traveler knows, the itinerary can evolve as you go along. It wasn't long before we realized that Kuala Lumpur offered the most budget-friendly return route to London. A handy tip for those seeking economical travel options!
But here's the golden nugget of wisdom I'd like to share: when it comes to booking your flights, always, and I mean ALWAYS, do it well in advance. Trust me; it's a game-changer. Flights are considerably cheaper when booked ahead of time, even in comparison to snagging a deal a mere 3 to 5 months before your intended departure.
Of course, there are a few caveats to this approach. Planning months in advance can feel a tad risky, especially when life's unpredictabilities come into play. However, if you're absolutely certain about your travel plans and have the wanderlust bug firmly entrenched in your system, this method is an absolute winner.
To sweeten the deal, you can employ the nifty tool known as Google Flights. It's your trusty sidekick for pinpointing the departure dates that promise the most budget-friendly fares. So, there you have it—a tried-and-tested formula for budget-savvy travel. Happy exploring!
2. Get a part-time job
Finding the perfect part-time job during my university year turned into a bit of an odyssey, taking me roughly a month to land on the right opportunity. My initial foray into the job market led me to a waitressing gig at a local restaurant. However, it quickly became evident that this place had different plans for my time than I did. Despite my request for a more manageable 15-20 hours per week, they insisted on a gruelling 30-hour workweek.
Thankfully, I didn't give up, and my persistence eventually paid off. I stumbled upon a job at a restaurant that was conveniently paired with the Hilton in the heart of London Bridge. The silver lining? They offered a zero-hour contract, which meant I had the flexibility to work around 10 hours a week. The catch? I had to rise and shine at the crack of dawn since I was assigned to the breakfast buffet shift. But hey, that left me with the entire day to call my own.
With this additional income, coupled with my student finance, I managed to tuck away a tidy sum of £100-200 per month into my travel savings. This prudent financial approach ultimately enabled me to accomplish a significant feat: booking my flight to Bangkok and securing a return flight from Kuala Lumpur in January.
How did I pull it off, you might wonder? Well, I made a conscious decision to save money during the Christmas holidays by opting to spend quality time with my family staying at home instead of splurging on groceries, transportation, and other expense if I decided to stay on campus. My part-time job earnings were now exclusively channeled into my travel savings fund. And that, my friends, is how I turned my dreams of an adventure into a reality.
3. Lock your travel savings into a Monzo pot
Being a student on a budget, I stumbled upon a game-changer: Monzo, the banking app that quickly became my trusty sidekick. Why, you ask? Well, let me spill the beans.
Monzo boasts a nifty feature that had me absolutely hooked—the ability to create what they call "pots." Picture these pots as your secret stash for all your savings goals. It's like having a digital piggy bank, but way cooler.
Now, here's where it gets even better. I designated one of these magical pots exclusively for my travel savings. It became my virtual treasure chest, where I diligently stashed away funds for my upcoming summer adventures. But wait, there's more! Monzo throws in an extra layer of awesomeness by allowing you to lock these pots for a specific period. Talk about commitment!
If you're anything like me and aspire to save up for your epic summer escapades, Monzo is your go-to bank. It keeps things crystal clear by showing you exactly how much you've squirreled away. Plus, it's equipped with nifty features that act as your guardian angels, preventing you from dipping into your precious travel savings. So, if you're ready to embark on a budget-savvy journey toward your dream summer getaway, Monzo is here to make it happen. Trust me; you won't regret it.
4. Pre-game hard before you go out
Let's talk about one of the classic student struggles—nights out with friends. It was my Achilles' heel when I was on a mission to save up during my university days. Ah, those unforgettable first-year adventures! Back then, the goal was simple: get as drunk as humanly possible every single time.
You know how it goes—one drink leads to another, and suddenly, I've dropped a cool £50 on club drinks that didn't even have the courtesy to get me properly sloshed. It's a rite of passage, really. But if you're looking for sage advice to pass down to fellow university students, here it is: pregame like a pro.
For the uninitiated, pregame is the art of enjoying a few budget-friendly sips before hitting the town. In my case, a trusty £6 bottle of white wine was my secret weapon. It's a game-changer that not only saves you a small fortune but also ensures you're in good spirits for a night out.
And here's a little trick I picked up along the way—a sober month. Yep, you heard that right. I tried it, and it worked wonders for my wallet. Of course, this path is reserved for the truly dedicated travelers among us, like myself. Plus, there are some nifty health benefits thrown in for good measure.
So, if you're ready to commit to your travel dreams, consider these wallet-friendly tactics. Your future adventures—and your bank account—will thank you. Cheers to saving and savouring life!
5. Don't buy new clothes or sell your old, unused ones
Ah, the perils of being a spirited teenager—it's all too easy to succumb to the allure of an online shopping spree, seeking that sweet serotonin rush. But let me regale you with a valuable lesson I learned on my quest to save up for my Asian adventure.
Here's the thing: buying new clothes can seem like a fantastic idea at the time, but trust me, it often doesn't live up to the hype. I vividly recall the sinking feeling of spending a hefty £50 on a top that lost its appeal within a mere month. Ouch. That £50 could've been a tidy addition to my savings pot.
So, here's my sage advice—take a moment to cherish your current wardrobe. You've got more than enough stylish outfits to rock. The truth is, you don't need to splurge on trendy new threads every single month. Sometimes, less is more.
But wait, there's more wisdom to share. Ever thought about clearing out those old clothes that have been gathering dust? Enter apps like Vinted, your ticket to not only decluttering your wardrobe but also pocketing a little extra cash. It's a win-win. The money you make from selling those second-hand gems can easily replace any funds you might have dipped into from your savings pot during moments of weakness.
So, my fellow youthful thrivers, remember this: appreciating what you have and making savvy choices will not only keep your wardrobe fresh but also propel you closer to your savings goals. It's all about balance and making the most of what you've got. Happy saving!
6. Spend less money on transport
London, the ultimate city for strolling to your heart's content. An hour spent navigating the vibrant streets of this bustling metropolis feels like a mere twenty minutes. So, before you let TFL make a dent in your bank account every time you tap into the tube, consider another option—walking.
Not only does this choice help you rack up those much-needed steps, but it also invites a sense of mindfulness into your daily routine. There's something special about meandering through London's streets, taking in the sights, sounds, and energy of the city.
Now, for those moments when public transport is non-negotiable, here's a pro tip: make sure you've got your trusty student discount zip card at the ready. The small savings you accumulate with each journey may seem inconsequential in the moment, but they add up to significant savings in the long run.
In a nutshell, if your destination in London is less than an hour away by foot, I say go for it—walk to your heart's content. Your wallet and your well-being will thank you.
7. Stop buying your significant other gifts
Are you and your partner planning an exciting travel adventure together, much like I did? Well, here's a little nugget of wisdom I picked up along the way—put a hold on those pricey gifts for birthdays, Valentines, Christmas, and all the rest.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm all for showing love through gift-giving, but let's consider a savvy alternative. How about redirecting those gift funds straight into your travel savings pot? It's a game-changer that can help you build up a substantial travel fund before you know it.
If you and your partner share a burning passion for exploring new horizons and want to ensure your trip is not just a dream but a reality filled with incredible experiences, this is a no-brainer. Making the decision to prioritize your travel goals over materialistic gifts is a win-win situation.
After all, isn't the prospect of a remarkable journey together and the memories you'll create far more valuable and enduring than those fleeting, material presents? It's a shift in perspective that's bound to make your adventures all the more meaningful. So, consider this your passport to both love and wanderlust!
8. Choose your supermarket wisely, good meal plans are key
London, the land of opportunities, but also a city that can quickly drain your wallet. But fear not, fellow budget-conscious souls, for I've uncovered a gem of wisdom that will keep your finances in check while keeping your belly full.
First and foremost, ditch the fancy supermarkets and head straight to the budget-friendly havens—Aldi and Lidl. These places are your best pals when it comes to smart grocery shopping in the heart of London.
Now, let's talk strategy. The key to saving big bucks is to craft a robust meal plan. Trust me; this simple step can be a game-changer. Instead of splurging on takeout and watching your hard-earned money vanish, you'll be in control of your spending.
As an example, let's take a 19-year-old like me. With a mere £11 at Aldi, I managed to score groceries that kept me satisfied for an entire week. Yes, you read that right! Three meals a day, each brimming with the essential trio—protein, fiber, and carbs.
Sure, we all have unique tastes and dietary needs, but the bottom line remains the same. Whether you're a gourmet enthusiast or a lover of simple pleasures, shopping at Aldi or Lidl will stretch your grocery budget further than you ever thought possible. So, without further ado, here's a sample meal plan to help you conquer the art of budget-friendly grocery shopping in your local Aldi. Your wallet will thank you later!

10. Freeload off your parents
Living near your parents during university can be a blessing in disguise, and I've got a little trick up my sleeve to share with you—make the most of it! Here's how I did it: I'd invite my dear parents for a fun day out in central London, but there was a little twist—our adventure included a grocery shopping spree.
Now, you might wonder why I'd drag them along for a grocery run, but let me tell you, it's a brilliant way to save some extra cash while enjoying quality time together. Plus, who doesn't love a day out with their folks, right?
And here's a little secret that many university students swear by—when you head back home during breaks, seize the opportunity to load up on all the "freebies" you can find. Trust me; these treasures can go a long way in saving you money while you're back on campus.
So, my fellow scholars, remember this little strategy when you're lucky enough to live close to your parents. It's a win-win situation—family time, savings, and a few extra goodies to make your university life a bit more comfortable.
11. Discipline yourself two months before your big trip
While our mission here is to help you maintain a healthy social life while sticking to your budget, we can't overlook the significance of the last two months leading up to your adventure.
Now, the timeline might vary depending on the duration of your trip, but these precious months are where the magic—or the challenge—happens. It's the time for unwavering discipline in the realm of saving money and budgeting, ensuring that your trip exceeds your expectations without financial hiccups.
So, how can you master this discipline? Let's explore some strategies. Consider temporarily limiting your outings to once a month. I know, it might seem like a daunting task, and yes, it might cause a bit of a stir among your friends. But fear not! There are alternatives to keep the social flame burning bright.
Host indoor activities with your pals—think cozy dinners or engaging card games. These gatherings not only preserve your social life but also contribute to your savings discipline. It's a win-win situation that ensures your travel fund stays intact.
In the grand scheme of your adventure, these last two months can make all the difference. So, stay committed, embrace the art of budgeting, and watch as your trip unfolds beyond your wildest dreams.

US ‘New Cold War’ Against China Is Self-Destructive
— By Jan Oberg | September 05, 2023
Illustration:Xia Qing/Global Times
Editor's Note:
The China-US bilateral relationship is one of the most important in the world. The trajectory of this relationship has attracted international attention. Still, the US is stepping up its efforts to suppress China on various fronts such as politics and diplomacy, economy, trade, technology, and military security, showing the true meaning of a cold war. The Global Times invites Chinese and foreign experts to expose the US' manipulation of the "new cold war" and reveal the damage it may potentially cause to the world.
A couple of years ago, The Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research, TFF, in Sweden, of which I am the director, published "Behind The Smokescreen. An Analysis of the West's Destructive China Cold War Agenda And Why It Must Stop."
Among several perspectives of the US/Western accusation industry, we looked into the medialized stories about genocide in Xinjiang, forced labor and Taiwan, and nine mainstream media manipulation methods that aim to manufacture a systematically negative image of China in the Western mind.
We found that a cold war occurs by influencing the "free" press - also the Western state press - through three main mechanisms: a) Fake or fabricated stories, b) Omission - for instance, of every positive aspect of China's developments, and c) Source Ignorance: using the same few sources spreading disinformation, from the US rippling through and being repeated ad nauseam and never checking the root empirical evidence or validity of the assertions, in short, FOSI.
Ultimately, this causes a decay of the crucial and critical role of mainstream media and their conversion toward tabloid banalizing black-and-white worldviews - "we good, them evil" - that promote confrontation and warfare, all operated by the Military-Industrial-Media-Academic Complex, MIMAC.
Tragically for democracy, mainstream media have become the leaders in promoting militarism, armament and legitimizing the empire and its wars. What are the elements of the cold war in all this?
First and foremost, the cold war is a psycho-political phenomenon. It dichotomizes our incredibly complex world into two: good versus evil. It seeks to preserve our superiority and keep others submissive and weaker. It promises war if its deterrence fails. And it precludes a world of equals, cooperation and mutual learning. If you are No. 1 in a system, you do not learn and listen; you teach, bribe and issue orders.
Cold wars may go well for the cold warrior when in ascendancy. In the "old" Cold War in Europe, two fundamentally Western systems - one based on Karl Marx, the other on Adam Smith, to put it crudely - competed while the US/NATO ascended after 1945. On all power scales, it was superior to the Soviet Union and its system. We know how it ended.
The winner then - foolishly - took it all: The US/NATO world did what it pleased within its exceptionalist "international rules-based order," not the UN Charter and other parts of international law. Catchwords: out-of-NATO-area military actions in violation of NATO's own Treaty - Yugoslavia - and regime change/resource/anti-terrorism wars on an assembly line basis; NATO's expansion against all promises given to the Soviet Union.
It all went so well and seemed so easy. Why listen to or empathize with others? Why focus on the changing world when "we" are the change-makers, God's own country par excellence? If we can get away with it, we do it. However, prudence, statesmanship and long-range thinking would have compelled global impact analyses instead of narcissist imperial self-aggrandizement.
The US Unilaterally Initiates New Cold War Against China! Illustration: Liu Xidan/Global Times
It went so well that the West overlooked the Rest: China's impressive socio-economic development based on an eclectic combination of Chinese concepts - that the West still doesn't understand - and imported Western elements; the establishment and maturation of organizations like BRICS, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and African and other regional organizations.
The West also did not sense the actual price that would be paid for its militarism: It's huge and growing burden on all civilian sectors, including technology and economy, and - in the wake of the history of colonialism and imperialism - the Rest becoming more and more nationally and collectively self-reliant - a concept developed about 50 years ago and ridiculed by the West.
And what was the result? Well, this is written the day after BRICS expanded with essential countries in Africa, the Middle East and South America - a huge step toward a multipolar and cooperative Rest saying: We can do without you, America and Europe! If you want to cooperate on new, reasonable terms, we are ready, but the days of your Western hegemony and universalization of Western values are coming to an end.
Such is global macro history: Empires have come and gone, and that of the US/NATO is the last: Nobody is so naive as to believe that it has a God-given right to be the ruler of the whole world and force others to accept its values.
The enormous world order changing before our very eyes is as predictable as it is inexorable. Only the ignorance - blinding intoxication - of power overlooks it. The West has run its race and become over-extended, insensitive to other cultures and ways of thinking, and unable to adapt to system changes but insisted on steering unilaterally. It's losing legitimacy in the eyes of others, relative economic and political strength and the creative ability to outline a better future world that the Rest feels attracted to: Classical decline indicators!
What I have said here is pure Gandhian thinking: You may harm others by using violence - physical, economic, military, structural, cultural and environmental - but, sooner rather than later, your violence boomerangs: It corrupts, debases, brutalizes and makes you more loathed than loved. A critical mass will develop.
In a deeper socio-cultural sense, the Christian Occident has never appropriately problematized those many types of violence upon which it built its relations with the Rest.
The West's cold war on China is about so much more than the issues that dominate daily news - chips, trade, Taiwan and the topics of the permanent accusation industry. It's about profound tectonic changes in humanity's way of developing - and about whether or not the West will join and contribute or become a de-developed periphery in the new world. And whether its empire will go down with a whimper or a bang, or adapt to macro history's unavoidable changes.
We know very little about humanity's future in the next 100 or so years. The safest philosophy will be for the Rest to, despite all, extend compassion and cooperation to the good forces of the West and abstain from tit-for-tat against its evil ones.

Summary: You run into your snobby ex boyfriend after a drunken party. Things go south from there. tw: female reader, hinted murder, possessive behavior, condescension, financial(?) abuse, classism
You know this is a stupid, stupid idea. Going home at God knows what time in the pitch black is never a good idea, you think drowsily, head still spinning from the last beer, but even more so when you're tired, pissed off and tipsy. You're freezing, naked shoulders wet from the chilly midnight rain - but instead of soft damp linden, you smell molden concrete and metal. You fucking hate this city. You hate the stupid, flashy, obnoxious parties for rich people, and this shitty university in the middle of nowhere, and even the scholarship that forced you into close proximity with the freakish upper class of east New Hemptison.
"Baby!" A familiar voice sinks into the muddy darkness and you have to physically restrain yourself from emptying your stomach right there on the street - and knowing your neighbours, you'd have to clean it after too. His steps fasten and soon you feel his hand gripping your shoulder to turn you around. Standing before you, glistening just like some prince from a fairy tale, is everything you despise about this town. The fact that he's perfectly prim and proper despite the pounding rain, that his teeth seem almost pearly white in the dark, that his hair is crisp and slicked away tastefully, that even now he's wearing a fucking Armani shirt with the cheesiest pair of jeans (ones you could never afford) - it makes you want to crawl back to the cave you came from, two continents away, and never look back.
"Baby, where have you been?" He sounds terribly concerned as he pulls your shivering body in for a tight bear hug, running his hands through your absolutely soaked hair - murmuring something incomprehensible to your drunken mind. "I was worried sick, missy." His voice drops slightly, but it's all for show. He's playing the part of the good boyfriend, like always - and you fell for it once, you did, but you know better now. "I called you, like, sixty eight times. And nothing." He swallows, big hands trembling around you. "Just radio silence. I thought something bad happened to y-"
"Oh, f-uucking beat it." Your patience finally snaps and you push him off swiftly, barely contained anger starting to resurface again. Today was supposed to be about you, about healing, about feeling better, but just your luck - the very problem had found you, just like always. No matter where you go, your troubles follow. "You know what you did, asshole. Don't you d-aare play innocent with m-me." You hiss drunkenly, stumbling all over your words before hitting the wall all on your own. Mathew, of course, doesn't waste the oppurtunity to get closer to you - just so he can help you regain your balance, of course. The golden boy of Saint Hemptison would never take advantage of an intoxicated girl - much less his ex girlfriend who he's still hopelessly in love with, supposedly. Right.
"Baby, please, you're drunk - you're not making any sense." The man whispers softly, placing his hand at your hip. "Let's go to the penthouse. We can talk about this in the morning when you are more aware of your thoughts."
When you're more aware of your thoughts? You almost laugh. It's quite bittersweet when it hits you that he doesn't respect you even now - maybe he never has in the duration of your miserable relationshop, that in his eyes you'll always be the poor girl in need of a white knight. Just a little trophy to show off, if a bit broken in certain spots.
"I am not going anywhere with you." You mumble, trying to calm down - to appear cold and collected, the complete opposite of what he wants you to be. "Look, I know that you're mad at me, babygirl, but I'm sure your little temper tantrum can wait until tomorrow. You know I don't like this neighbourhood. Let me take you to a safe place for the night, okay?" He reaches for your hand again, but this time you swat it away in fury.
"Who are you to act so worried about me, huh?" You can hear your voice breaking as the tears prick at your eyes - hot and shameful. Crying in front of him is the last thing you want to do, but god, it's so hard not to when this whole night has been a disaster after a disaster. You're truly at your wits' end. "After what you did? You are truly shameless." You squeal, and admittedly, it feels fucking great to finally say it.
Your former lover's face twists into an unrecognizable grimace as he watches you tear into his heart with ease - and as you turn to leave, he grabs your wrist painfully. This time something is different about his eyes - they're not longer smiling. Now they're two bottomless gray pits devoid of kindness, the same eyes you saw the night of the accident as he caressed your cold cheek with bloody knuckles.
"And what did I do, love? Hm?" He tilts your chin up by squeezing your throat, forcing you to meet his eerie gaze. Suddenly all your tipsy bravado evaporates into thin air. "Please, refresh my memory. I really can't recall the events of the past two weeks - since you've been avoiding me and all..." His fingers dig into your skin and you wince just like a kicked puppy - but he doesn't bulge an inch. Suddenly everything comes flooding back - the touches you convinced yourself were sensual, not possesive, the glances you once thought of as romantic, the constant interrogations, the strange emails, the cryptic calls, the dead roses at your door. "I couldn't sleep - or eat for that matter. I am half a man without you. I lose myself completely."
It all makes sense now. You feel like crying, because it's so crystal clear... and you've been a willing fool. You had closed your eyes, because it was easier to lie than to accept the truth bubbling just under his surface - under the dimples and the smiles, and the hundred jewelry boxes still lying unopened under your bed.
"You - you killed him! You monster!" You gasp, unable to stop your lips from uttering the lethal. You thrash around to no avail, you're stuck. "How could you? Jack was your friend!" You hide your face in the crook of his neck to stop the sobs, too scared to look at the crazed man holding you. He simply rolls his eyes, letting you soak his shirt with your pretty tears. "Don't be so dramatic - it's just some broken bones. He'll be fine... as long as he stays away from my things."
You raise your head shakily - you're drowning between hatred, fear and misery. The adrenaline is making you even more disoriented than the liquor percentage in your bloodstream.
"I am not a fucking thing for you to-" You hiccup, growing woozy as you hit weakly against his chest. The corners of his lips curl up slightly as he chuckles at the pitiful display. "For you to just own!" You keep going, cheeks purple from pent up fury - there's something tearing at your insides like you want to scream, you need it to come out, but you find yourself unable to push it off your flesh like it's been ingrained with glue and a shovel.
"You're wrong, baby. I do own you." Mathew says with the sweetest, softest voice you've heard in your life, sugary and bitter like poisonous honey. "Let's say you want to break up-"
"We already broke u-"
His eyes pierce you mid-sentence. You quickly close your mouth.
"Let's say," He repeats through gritted teeth, holding you so tightly you might just merge into one being. "That you want to break up with me." He inhales deeply, nostrils flaring. "Hypothetically. Then what? You have no place to live. I know you're staying at that shithole of a hotel down the street right now - it's filthier than a brothel, no?"
You want to say something - to argue, to scream. To tell him that he's being a rich, condescending asshole again, that you like the hotel - despite the mold and the cockroaches and the way there never seems to be hot water. Despite having to lock your door four times so you don't get assaulted in your sleep.
You say nothing.
"You don't have to confirm it. My agent tracked you down a week ago. Whatever - you'll run out of money in, approximately, 9 days." He smirks maliciously, with unhidden spite - just like a little devil. "Then what? You don't even have an address. And you know the city hall will take their sweet fucking time to help you register - if they don't make you pay a fine first." He strokes your chin cruelly. "We both know just how much they care about clueless little foreigners with less than a penny to their name." He whispers, twisting the dagger in. "Hell, they may even cut your scholarship. And. then. what." Your ex pronounces each word slowly - making sure you can understand it, feel it - fear it.
You imagine your family back at home. You can hear their voices over the phone, your mom smiling as you tell her about your day, your father asking you what you plan to do after college - whether you will still remember them, whether you'd take care of them once they have nothing left, since you took everything with you. The money, the hopes, the happiness...
"F-fuck you..." You whimper faintly, falling against him. You feel defeated, and the sharp words are all you have left. "Why are you doing this to me?" You mumble to yourself, suddenly feeling drained to the very bone. The man begins stroking your hair as he rocks you gently to the side. "Because I love you." He slowly kisses down your neck. "Because I'm the only one in this city who gives a fuck about you, and-" You can feel his smile against your burning cheek. "Because you're mine."

Camera-trapping data revealed in a new study show a steady recovery of tigers in Thailand’s Western Forest Complex over the past two decades.
The tiger recovery has been mirrored by a simultaneous increase in the numbers of the tigers’ prey animals, such as sambar deer and types of wild cattle.
The authors attribute the recovery of the tigers and their prey to long-term efforts to strengthen systematic ranger patrols to control poaching as well as efforts to restore key habitats and water sources.
Experts say the lessons learnt can be applied to support tiger recovery in other parts of Thailand and underscore the importance of the core WEFCOM population as a vital source of tigers repopulating adjacent landscapes.
The tiger population density in a series of protected areas in western Thailand has more than doubled over the past two decades, according to new survey data.
Thailand is the final stronghold of the Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti), the subspecies having been extirpated from neighboring Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam over the past decade due to poaching, habitat loss and indiscriminate snaring...
Fewer than 200 tigers are thought to remain in Thailand’s national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, only a handful of which are sufficiently undisturbed and well-protected to preserve breeding tigers.
The most important of these protected areas for tigers is the Huai Kha Khaeng Thung Yai (HKK-TY) UNESCO World Heritage Site, which comprises three distinct reserves out of the 17 that make up Thailand’s Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM). Together, these three reserves — Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Thungyai Naresuan West and Thungyai Naresuan East — account for more than a third of the entire WEFCOM landscape.
Now, a new study published in Global Ecology and Conservation documents a steady recovery of tigers within the HKK-TY reserves since camera trap surveys began in 2007. The most recent year of surveys, which concluded in November 2023, photographed 94 individual tigers, up from 75 individuals in the previous year, and from fewer than 40 in 2007.
Healthy tiger families
The study findings reveal that the tiger population grew on average 4% per year in Hua Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest and longest-protected of the reserves, corresponding to an increase in tiger density from 1.3 tigers per 100 square kilometers, to 2.9 tigers/100 km2.
“Tiger recoveries in Southeast Asia are few, and examples such as these highlight that recoveries can be supported outside of South Asia, where most of the good news [about tigers] appears to come from,” said Abishek Harihar, tiger program director for Panthera, the global wildcat conservation organization, who was not involved in the study.
Among the camera trap footage gathered in HKK-TY over the years were encouraging scenes of healthy tiger families, including one instance of a mother tiger and her three grownup cubs lapping water and lounging in a jacuzzi-sized watering hole. The tiger family stayed by the water source for five days during the height of the dry season.
The team of researchers from Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Kasetsart University, and India’s Center for Wildlife Studies deployed camera traps at more than 270 separate locations throughout the HKK-TY reserves, amassing 98,305 days’ worth of camera-trap data over the 19-year study period.
Using software that identifies individual tigers by their unique stripe patterns, they built a reference database of all known tigers frequenting the three reserves. A total of 291 individual tigers older than 1 year were recorded, as well as 67 cubs younger than 1 year [over the course of the study].
Ten of the tigers were photographed in more than one of the reserves, indicating their territories straddled the reserve boundaries. The authors conclude that each of the three reserves has a solid breeding tiger population and that, taken together, the HKK-TY landscape is a vital source of tigers that could potentially repopulate surrounding areas where they’ve been lost. This is supported by cases of known HKK-TY tigers dispersing into neighboring parts of WEFCOM and even across the border into Myanmar.
Conservation efforts pay off
Anak Pattanavibool, study co-author and Thailand country director at the Wildlife Conservation Society, told Mongabay that population models that take into account the full extent of suitable habitat available to tigers within the reserves and the likelihood that some tigers inevitably go undetected by camera surveys indicate there could be up to 140 tigers within the HKK-YT landscape.
Anak told Mongabay the tiger recovery is a clear indication that conservation efforts are starting to pay off. In particular, long-term action to strengthen systematic ranger patrols to control poaching as well as efforts to boost the tigers’ prey populations seem to be working, he said.
“Conservation success takes time. At the beginning we didn’t have much confidence that it would be possible [to recover tiger numbers], but we’ve been patient,” Anak said. For him, the turning point came in 2012, when authorities arrested and — with the aid of tiger stripe recognition software — prosecuted several tiger-poaching gangs operating in Huai Kha Khaeng. “These cases sent a strong message to poaching gangs and they stopped coming to these forests,” he said."
...ranger teams have detected no tiger poaching in the HKK-TY part of WEFCOM since 2013.

Hijab Butch Blues: A Memoir
Lamya H
When fourteen-year-old Lamya H realizes she has a crush on her teacher--her female teacher--she covers up her attraction, an attraction she can't yet name, by playing up her roles as overachiever and class clown. Born in South Asia, she moved to the Middle East at a young age and has spent years feeling out of place, like her own desires and dreams don't matter, and it's easier to hide in plain sight. To disappear. But one day in Quran class, she reads a passage about Maryam that changes everything: When Maryam learned that she was pregnant, she insisted no man had touched her. Could Maryam, uninterested in men, be . . . like Lamya? From that moment on, Lamya makes sense of her struggles and triumphs by comparing her experiences with some of the most famous stories in the Quran. She juxtaposes her coming out with Musa liberating his people from the pharoah; asks if Allah, who is neither male nor female, might instead be nonbinary; and, drawing on the faith and hope Nuh needed to construct his ark, begins to build a life of her own--ultimately finding that the answer to her lifelong quest for community and belonging lies in owning her identity as a queer, devout Muslim immigrant. This searingly intimate memoir in essays, spanning Lamya's childhood to her arrival in the United States for college through early-adult life in New York City, tells a universal story of courage, trust, and love, celebrating what it means to be a seeker and an architect of one's own life.
