Do you ever think about how bullshit the visa system is? Like for example if i were to visit my girlfriend in south Africa i can just show up at customs with zero visa and be let in as long as i don't stay for more than 90 days at a time but if she were to visit me in Australia she has to spend about $200 applying for a visa months in advance cause processing time and might not even get accepted. How the fuck is this seen as acceptable. Why does being born in Australia make entering other countries easier for me than someone born in South Africa.

Like what the actual fuck is this, i can enter twich as many countries visa free (the green number) as she can.

And if you add up all the countries she can visit with e-visas/visa on arrival or electronic travel authorisations (the blue and yellow numbers) its still one less than i can visit completely visa free like what the fuck is this

Namibian Michelle Nehoya has spent nearly $500 (£390) on the application process for a visa to visit Canada - but almost two years later it has yet to materialise.

The 38-year-old, who lives in Namibia's capital, Windhoek, is desperate to get to Quebec to see her aunt and cousins whom she has not seen for almost a decade.

The visa application has involved filling in multiple forms - and among other requirements, she has also had to provide six months of bank statements, an invitation letter plus a detailed travel history.

There is no way to apply in Namibia, so this has also meant travelling to South Africa to submit her biometric data, which involves giving her fingerprints and having a photo taken.

Her experience is not uncommon for Africans travelling to Western countries.

In 2022, seven of the top 10 countries with the highest visa rejection rates in the bloc of European countries known as the Schengen area were African, according to consultancy firm Henley and Partners.

“It has been lengthy and frustrating. I haven’t been given any reason why it’s taken so long," Ms Nehoya tells the BBC.

However, if her family in Quebec decide to travel to Namibia on Canadian passports, they will not face anything like the challenges and costs she encountered. Canadian citizens can currently enter Namibia without a visa.

But this will change in eight months’ time.

From next April, Canadian nationals, along with those from Germany, the US, the UK and 29 other countries, will require a visa for entry.

These include all “non-reciprocating countries” - meaning the new visa rules will affect citizens from all countries that require Namibian passport holders to have visas.

“Namibia has extended gestures of goodwill and favourable treatment to nationals of various countries. However, despite these efforts, certain nations have not reciprocated,” Namibia’s immigration ministry said in May.

“In light of this disparity, the government has deemed it necessary to implement a visa requirement to ensure parity and fairness in diplomatic interactions.”

But these visitors will be able to buy their 90-day visa, costing $90, on arrival in Namibia - unlike the onerous requirements placed on African passport holders who need to get their visas beforehand.

The British High Commissioner to Namibia, Charles Moore, said he respected the right of Namibia to impose new regulations.

“[The UK] unfortunately imposed a visa regime on Namibia last year due to the number of asylum seekers we were receiving. That was impacting on our relationship with Namibia,” he said.

A statement from the UK government further explained there had been a sustained and significant increase in the number of asylum applications from Namibians at the UK border since 2016.

“This constitutes an abuse of the provision to visit the UK for a limited period as non-visa nationals,” it said.

For Ms Nehoya, Namibia’s visa announcement is long overdue: “I think it is fair. It feels like Namibia is standing up for itself.”

The reactions on social media to the news echo her sentiments.

“Finally. I hope they also require them to submit a bible of documents, take medical tests, [and] Namibian language tests,” wrote one commenter.

Another said: “If I need to bring bank statements… and all sort of documents and still buy visa just to gain entry to a country, that country should also do the same to gain entry to my country.”

And visas for the Schengen area, the US and Canada do not come cheap for African passport holders.

The European Union made more than €53m ($58m; £45m) on rejected visa applications from African countries in 2023, according to a recent report by the Lago Collective, a think-tank that focuses on migration.

Visas can be rejected for multiple reasons. The report says most rejections are based on “reasonable doubt about the visa applicant’s intention to return home”.

In June 2024, the price of Schengen short-term visas went up from €80 to €90 for adults, and in October 2023, the UK visa fee rose from £100 to £115.

The report also showed that nearly a third of Africans applying for a visa to the Schengen area were rejected, higher than the global average.

Even when visas are approved, African travellers say their experiences at border security make them feel uncomfortable and unwanted.

Winnie Byanyima, the head of UNAids and who is herself Ugandan, drew attention to this when she tweeted in 2022: “I’m at Geneva airport, I’m almost refused to board, all documents scrutinised over and over again, calls made… I board last.”

Despite Namibia’s visa initiative receiving praise on social media, the tourism industry is less enthusiastic.

The Hospitality Association of Namibia said it was “very concerned” about the message it “sends to the global travel trade”.

In 2022, the tourism sector accounted for 7% of GDP, making it the third largest contributor to the economy - with most tourists coming countries such as Germany and the US.

Though Soni Nrupesh, a tourism expert based in Windhoek, believes the visa move will not deter visitors: “It will not change much; you can still get on a plane without a visa.

“It’s just when you get to the airport you will fill a form pay the fees and enter.”

Prospective travellers like Ms Nehoya hope this kind reciprocity will be the future for everyone.

“It would be nice to go to Canada, the US or the UK and just get a visa on arrival. But right now, we must plan everything so far in advance.”

Israeli produce should be left on all shop shelves. When shopping always #CheckTheLabel to make sure you don't accidently buy any produce labelled from 'Israel'.

PUMA sponsors the Israel Football Association (IFA) and the Israeli national team. The IFA manages several football teams in illegal Israeli settlements, built on stolen Palestinian land.

We encourage all our supporters to focus on boycotting these 3 companies and to #CheckTheLabel on produce, to be more effective in ending Israeli apartheid. We aren't saying other companies aren't complicit, but we need to be targeted and strategic to make a boycott successful, just how we have been in the past with South Africa.

I'd also recommend getting in touch with your government to see if they are willing to either loosen current visa requirements for Palestinians (price, eligibility) or introduce an entirely new, targeted visa regime (to expedite an otherwise slow process).

I put this in the comments on the post I just reblogged calling for an end to the Israeli occupation, but I felt it would work better as a post, so I'm saying it here too.

It's not the same situation exactly, so the solution won't be the same, but it will be similar, and I know people can learn from the perspective of a white south African post apartheid about what ending occupation can look like. Another group of people you can learn from are Zimbabweans, as they successfully returned the land to the natives and ended white occupation in the 90s, though I don't know the specifics and impact afterwards so I won't speak further on it.

Hi, I'm a white south African, and avid anti-racist constantly learning, a journalist and a student of politics, law and ethics. Many people who are calling for a ceasefire in Gaza are reluctant to call for an end to occupation, because in their minds it means mass displacement of Israeli Jews and an influx of political refugees to surrounding countries and Europe.

I'm here to tell you this is unlikely. After apartheid ended in south africa, a huge chunk of white south Africans stuck around, retained their property (though there are ongoing movements to give the land back to the native groups without compensation which is a political nightmare I don't feel like touching on now) and kept living as normal.

The only difference is that black people and other people of color now faced much less violence at the hands of white people, the government and the police system. They were no longer held under a curfew, no longer forced to carry a pass book, no longer forced to use seperate and lower standard infrastructure, no longer forcefully uprooted and moved with no say, and now able to vote, work higher paying jobs, own property outside of "homelands" in white neighborhoods, and treated in the eyes of the new government, new constitution and law as equal citizens to white people.

An affirmative action system called black economic empowerment was instituted to legally ensure companies employ a quota of people of color and women that reflects the population of the country. It has many pitfalls, and hasn't worked well, but I'm of the personal belief that it has more to do with white people clinging to power than any skill issues or racist tropes white people here will tell you are the cause.

A result of the BEE policy was that many wealthy white people or highly skilled and educated white youth got work visas in the west, and later immigrated. The rest that are still here are either here because they believe themselves citizens in their own right because they fought wars to achieve occupation and independence from the British government, or because they want to help fix things.

Some, like myself, hope to eventually immigrate back to our country of origin (a couple generations back mind you), but because European countries no longer grant us ancestral citizenship because we've been here since the 1600s, it would require going through the very long, very expensive process of immigration that anyone else who wants to immigrate to Europe has to go through.

We would have to learn the language of the country we hope to immigrate to, find employment, get a work visa and work permit, aquire housing, get an EU passport, get a driver's license, get health insurance, and a host of other hoops to jump through. Since one euro is worth about 20 rands, this process would cost us 20 times more. Even if the euro and Rand were equal in value, a huge majority of us don't have the money to go through this process, so we're stuck here.

A fair but perhaps not fiscally responsible solution for us would be if Europe paid the south african government reparations, and accepted ancestral citizenship and allowed us passage back to the countries of our ancestors as rightful citizens, at the cost of the European governments.

For Israeli Jews, this would mean staying to help fix things but in a state that allows Palestinians equal rights and access to resources and opportunities, equal governing power, and affirmative action. Those that can't get themselves to accept the state of Palestine and its people as equals will have to leave. Those wealthy enough can immigrate to Europe or north America, and those who aren't should be allowed ancestral citizenship back into the countries their ancestors came from.

Western countries that supported the Israeli occupation then need to pay reperations to Palestine for all the decades of war and occupation that they endorsed. The quicker, more violent solution would be to forcefully eject Israelis from the territory and make them refugees, but it's not what we're calling for right now, at least from my perspective.

South africa has been recovering from apartheid for 30 years, and it would likely take a civil war or another 50 years to get to any sort of stability and agreement, but progress has been made and will continue to be made. The same can happen for Palestine. It will take time, but if the Israeli government relinquish power and end occupation, however that ends up looking like, it can happen, and it's our responsibility as humans with compassion to support Palestine while they try.

2. Namibia's proposed visa exemption for Chinese nationals is a bilateral agreement that would benefit both countries, according to China's ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping.

Some Namibian politicians have objected to the proposal, with opposition leader McHenry Venaani claiming it is a "hoodwinking process" for Chinese prisoners to come to the country, and aspiring presidential candidate Job Amupanda alleging that it involves a deal between the ruling party and China to garner support for next year's elections.

The proposed agreement's main goal is to attract Chinese tourists and help Namibia become competitive again after the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Namibia's minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security, Albert Kawana.

3. Angola and Zambia signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in information technology, including digital transformation, AI, and space technology.

The agreement includes the establishment of direct cross-border optical fibre backbone connectivity between the two countries, scheduled to happen this month.

The collaboration is expected to help improve the regulation of the Angolan and Zambian telecom markets and lead to improved coverage and quality of ICT services provided in both countries.

Back to Uganda

25-26th February 2023

Leaving the house at 2.45 a.m. and arriving in our Entebbe guesthouse at 11.30 p.m. made for quite  a long day. But all the documents were present and correct and our baggage came with us all the way to Uganda, unlike last year when we had quite a challenging start. 

Some of you will be familiar with the necessities that need to be obtained  - visas are much easier because you can do most of it on line. Currency – Millions of Uganda shillings needed to pay for our transport and fuel apart from anything else, because you can’t rely on paying by card on this kind of safari. 

Then it’s worth changing the SIM cards on our mobiles to make communications slicker within Uganda. That process is quite fun, as once in the relevant shop you have a session with several different people (the equivalent to “Cashier number 3 please”) before the ceremonial insertion of your Uganda card and then working out where to stash your removed very small UK SIM card for safekeeping. 

After a quick sortie into the local supermarket for safari sundries – a surprisingly wide variety of goods for sale – we had a quick lunch and headed south to Nkima Forest Lodge. The weeks preceding our departure had been quite complicated and tiring,  and Ewan decided we should begin the safari with a day off. 

As we came to the lodge the owner was sorting out “a little water problem” – there was none. Dry weather meant the water table had dropped, affecting the supply. And the sun had not been shining so the water was not being heated! 

But we were glad to arrive, and the water problem was duly sorted. We’ve been especially pleased to find we had some very congenial fellow guests: four young civil servants from UK. 

I don’t know your views on civil servants but having worked in government service in both UK and Africa, we rather approve of them and recognise their importance. After all, they are the ones who try to give good information and advice to government ministers and a great deal depends on that. 

The group currently at Nkima are working in conflict resolution, humanitarian relief aid, and secret projects they couldn’t name…..all fascinating and we found them irresistibly interesting and admirable. How refreshing.

Nkima lodge is famous especially for the chance to see shoebill storks, very rare, in the swamps around Lake Victoria. And that’s just what we did this morning, travelling in a small boat along the channels through the reeds, water lilies and hyacinths, with a marvellous variety of birds along the way.

Wonderful to see so many malachite kingfishers, one of our very favourites, and exquisitely beautiful.

And finally, we did indeed meet a shoebill stork, huge and impressive with quite a presence. He apparently stays in one place for 3-4 hours, catching a very occasional lungfish for a snack. We can see why people get excited about such a sighting. We were delighted later to see one on the wing, soaring, as our guide announced, “up to the clouds”.

Shoebills: “perhaps the most eagerly sought of all African birds” by anyone with even the slightest interest in birds.

Two things combine to give the shoebill its striking appearance

It’s huge! An adult might stand more than 5 feet (150cm) tall. Seeing ours standing in the swamp it could easily have been a human.

Its clog-shaped hook-tipped bill, 20cm wide and almost as long, the largest of all living bird species. Perhaps not surprising that it's part of the pelican family. The bill is held in a permanent Cheshire cat smile, and the bird can look both sinister and inane. One of our young civil servants was eyeballed by a shoebill in the swamp yesterday and wondered if it was going to attack, but it just kept on smiling.

More fun facts about shoebills

Shoebills live for ages in bird terms – up to 50 years. They are faithful partners for life, male and female building a grassy nest up to 3m wide on a floating island. 

Parents share incubation duties. In hot weather they fill their beaks with water and spray the eggs to keep them cool. How cool is that? Eggs hatch after a month, and the dedicated parents continue to feed them for another two. 

The adult birds spend a lot of time standing around semi-frozen for several hours before suddenly plunging with great drama, speed and power to make a successful kill of a favourite lungfish, a tasty toad, or perhaps a baby crocodile. 

Shoebills are remarkable birds of distinctive appearance and with fascinating characteristics. Not surprisingly they come with a number of myths, legends and superstitions, and remain under threat as their habitats are being destroyed  

Here in the Mabamba swamp in Uganda it really pays the local community to protect the environment and the special shoebills. Tourists, particularly birding enthusiasts but not only them, pay local people significant sums for the privilege of a boat ride through the swamp with a knowledgeable guide and a reasonable chance of seeing a shoebill. 

We had a wonderful morning, and along with so many brilliant birds almost within touching distance, seeing the shoebill both on land and in the air was a precious privilege. We felt much restored.

"Elon Musk could have his United States citizenship revoked and be exposed to criminal prosecution if he lied to the government as part of the immigration process, according to legal experts.

Musk, who was born and raised in South Africa and later emigrated to Canada before eventually settling in the US and becoming a citizen, has spent more than $100 million to support Donald Trump and his nativist presidential campaign, and has personally demonized immigrants. A recent Bloomberg analysis found, for example, that Musk has posted around 1,300 times on X this year about immigration and voter fraud. Many of those posts promote the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, which falsely holds that Democrats seek to replace white voters with unauthorized immigrants whose votes they control, and depicts immigrants as dangerous lawbreakers.

Earlier this week, though, The Washington Post reported that Musk was himself an immigrant who had apparently broken the law. In the 1990s, he worked illegally in the United States, according to the Post, which cited “former business associates, court records and company documents.”

In 1995, according to the Post, Musk was admitted to graduate school at Stanford but didn’t enroll in classes, instead working on an online services startup that would eventually be known as Zip2. (Stanford did not reply to requests for comment.) In 1996, the Post reported, investors made a funding agreement contingent on Musk and his brother Kimbal—who has stated that the brothers were “illegal immigrants”—obtaining authorization to work in the US within 45 days. “Their immigration status was not what it should be for them to be legally employed running a company in the US,” Zip2 board member Derek Proudian told the Post.

Musk denies that he ever worked illegally in the US. (His lawyer, Alex Spiro, and a spokesperson for X, which he owns, did not reply to requests for comment.) He claims that in 1995, as a student, he was in the US on a J-1 visa, which then “transitioned” to an H1-B visa. As the Post reported, though, in a 2005 email that was entered into evidence in a since-closed defamation lawsuit in California, he wrote that he had applied to Stanford because he otherwise had “no legal right to stay in the country.” Musk then reportedly didn’t enroll at Stanford, instead working on the project that would become Zip2.

Overstaying a student visa was, and to a much lesser extent still is, relatively common. Working without authorization and lying about it during the immigration process would be, however, a black-letter violation of US law carrying significant penalties, albeit one enforced fairly rarely, say experts...

US law—specifically, 8 U.S.C. § 1451—allows for the revocation of naturalization if citizenship was “procured by concealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation.” The classic example of the law’s application is to former Nazis who ultimately had their citizenship stripped in the US after the exposure of their hidden pasts. But the law, experts say, covers lying about having worked without authorization, and there are several points in the process at which an immigrant has to attest, under penalty of perjury, that they haven’t done so...

Even if USCIS had solid evidence that Musk had broken the law, it would, experts say, not handle the matter administratively, but rather could refer it to a US attorney’s office. Prosecutors, who have broad discretion to take up or decline cases, could then proceed, or not, as they saw fit.

Many of the open questions here could be cleared up by Musk authorizing the release of his immigration records under the Freedom of Information Act. His lawyer, Spiro, did not respond to a question asking whether he would do so."
